Special thanks to Lara Messerly and Isaac Watras for their wonderful teaching, Darlene Austin and Sherry Kaminsky for assisting with enrichment classes, and Ben Pedigo and Adam Smith for their enthusiastic musicianship at our park concert! CSP parents make a huge commitment to the education of their children by using the Suzuki philosophy. Here are some tips for effective home teaching to help you in your every day challenges!

1. Maintain a positive attitude. 2. Prepare your child’s mind to learn. 3. Be sure you completely understand

you and your child’s assignment before you leave the studio lesson.

4. Don’t exceed the concentration span of your child during practice.

5. Encourage your child to take ownership.

6. Let your child teach you. 7. Listen to the Suzuki recording and

other good music at all possible opportunities.

8. Place importance on care and attention to detail in other areas of your child’s life.

9. Think of renewing, not reviewing pieces.

10. Achieve consistency.

How do we put these ideas into use? Remember to communicate with your child’s teacher. We all have trouble sometimes making practice sessions fun and productive. By asking your teacher questions and networking with other parents, you will acquire just the right idea for you and your child! Happy practicing!

This summer, Vince joined a bluegrass band called RETREAD. The band has performed recently at the Cincinnati Nature Center and the Kentucky Wool Festival. Look for more information about their upcoming performances! After directing the CSP summer camp in June, Vincent and Elizabeth returned to the Capital Suzuki Institute in Columbus, OH, for the 7th straight year, teaching violin and viola master classes, group classes, and chamber music. Vincent performed the premiere of Suite for the Sweets by Catherine McMichael, a composer from Lansing, Michigan. CSP students Lucas Aschemeier and Veronica Phelan participated in the week-long activities. The Phelans also attended the International Music Festival at Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, OH, teaching and performing with other faculty members.

CSP is very grateful for an award from the Corbett Foundation, and project support provided by a grant from the Fine Arts Fund. Both organizations are sponsors this year of the scholarship program, a unique aspect of CSP that makes it possible for children needing financial assistance to participate in private instruction on violin or viola, music theory classes, ensemble classes and the chamber music program. We are very grateful to the Fine Arts Fund and the Corbett Foundation for acknowledging the value of CSP and contributing this generous support.

SSPPRRIINNGG SSOOLLOO RREECCIITTAALL The solo recital held May 27 was a lovely “finale” for the season, as each student performed a piece that represented his or her greatest personal accomplishment for the year. The recital also gave us a chance tothank all the special people who work very hard to make CSP a great organization. continued on page 4

Kiedra Wilson was awarded the Ashley Pearson-Shaver Memorial Scholarship. Presenting the award was last year’s scholarship recipient Ariana Reynolds. The $100 award is sponsored by Ken and Tena Robinson, and is given annually to a minority student to further his or her musical education during the summer. Kiedra used her scholarship to take private lessons this summer. Kiedra’s personal character was also acknowledged in May when she received Cancer Family Care’s Youth Caregiver Unsung Hero Award. Kiedra was nominated for the award by her mother, Jackiedra, who underwent treatment for cancer this year. The award ceremony was held at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Larissa Swanson was recognized as a member of CSP for 10 years, and we wished her all the best as she moves to California with her family for her senior year of high school. Larissa’s family was also thanked for the many years of support for Larissa and CSP.
