Community Service report-April 2017

An exciting Community Service workday is planned for Tuesday April 18th from 9:30am-3:00pm in the Shepard of the Sierras Fellowship Hall! Our Board is sponsoring the day and, yes, you must be really sweet and kind to them just as President Martha requested. Melida Hoch and Karla Trent will help the Board set up the Fellowship Hall for all members who spend the day cutting and sewing stockings, and sewing placemats and pillowcases. It promises to be a fun day to enjoy one an-other’s company and get a lot of work done. Our new supply cupboard located in the Hall contains almost everything we need, but if you have a table that is portable, please bring it. Please bring a cutting matt and rotary cutter if you plan on helping Judy Osa prepare more Christmas stocking kits. Bring your sewing machine and supplies if you plan to sew pillowcases or placemats. Don’t forget your lunch and snacks if you are staying the whole day. Thank you Board, Melida, and Karla for committing to helping with community service!

Our May 1st Guild meeting is Community Service night. We will have speakers representing organi-zations we are donating to, and other delightful surprises to share. Be prepared for a visually stun-ning meeting where many of our beautiful, soon to be donated quilts, stockings, pillowcases, and placemats will be on display. There will be plenty of time for members to “show and tell” during our May meeting, so bring your wonderful work.

Thank you all for the tremendous support you have already shown for Community Service!

My task as Social Correspondent is to represent you, the Guild members, by send-ing sympathy cards, get well cards, or “ thinking of you” cards to our members when needed. If you know of a member who should get a card, please contact me. [email protected] or 916-988-3459 Since our last meeting, Sympathy Cards have been sent to Diana Meier on the death of her husband and to Betty Kisby on the death of her son.

Social Correspondent Vera Dowling [email protected]

Guess who won playing the card game 31 at our April 2010 quilt camp at Mt Hope. Yes, Diane Dowling and Margie Cruz are looking pretty hap-py with their fat quarter winnings.

As always, Vera and I are looking for guild related stories and pictures from guild members. For in-stance, how about a story from one of our mini groups. Thanks much. We’ll be waiting.

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by President Martha Overman. Those in attendance were: Mar-tha Overman, Fran Claassens, Sally Vandervort, Kathy Griffin, Debra Carlisle, Kathy Black and Patty Clausen and Diana Meier. The minutes of the last board meeting were approved, as printed in the Guild Newsletter. Old Business: Diana Meier attended the board meeting, with information about the In-House retreat (for which she is Chair-person), that took place in January. She gave an itemized listing of income and expenses and explained why it was necessary to purchase ironing boards, folding tables and surge protectors for the retreat. Those items will be considered durable goods for the Guild and can be used by all committees if necessary. They will be stored with other Guild supplies and equipment at our Storage area. The Board has been approved by the Basket Raffle Chair of the quilt show, to provide a raffle basket and the theme will be Thanksgiving. There still seems to be some challenges for members re: our new Guild website. Martha will be having a dis-cussion with Emily re: these issues in hopes of finding some answers to questions that have arisen. Patty Clausen Program Chair-Elect will be contacting NCQC regarding the fact that our guild information is not currently on their website. Some of the Executive Board members will be “hosting” the April Community Service Day (April 18th) at the Church. Nancy Colwell, the Comm Service Chair will be unable to be in attendance that day, due to the Mt Hope quilt retreat. Committee Reports: Program Chair-Elect Patty Clausen would like to make some minor changes to the Speakers Contract. Cur-rently that contract is included with other “Forms” on our guild website. It was decided by the board that it should not be placed on the website at all. Martha will discuss this with our Website Chair, Emily Easley. The program for the April general meeting will be Kim Huckabee of Brewer Sewing Company. Vice-President Fran Claassens advises that she is creating a form that will be used for the visiting guilds who bring their Opportunity Quilts to our general meetings. This form will be filled out on the evening they visit and will contain information about their guild and their raffle quilt, which the Vice President can then present to the general membership when she introduces them at the beginning of each meeting. Member at Large, Kathy Black reports that a member has expressed a desire for there to be a more thorough Treasurer’s report in our Newsletter each month. It was discussed that this has been done in the past and it will begin again, with the May Newsletter. Each month there will be an itemized report published which will list all guild expenses and income for the previous month. The next PQG General Meeting will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 7:00 PM The next Executive Board Meeting will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 6:30 PM There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM. Respectfully submitted by: Sally Vandervort, Secretary

The meeting was called to order at 7:00PM by President Martha Overman.

All members and guests were welcomed.

There were no changes to the March 6, 2017 General Meeting minutes and they stand approved as printed in the Guild newsletter.

Vice-President Fran Classsens introduced visiting Sierra Gold Quilt Guild. They were present with their 2017 Opportunity quilt to sell tickets for the quilt and to inform the guild of their upcoming show on October 6-7 at the Amador County Fairgrounds.

Old Business:

The guild voted on and approved a motion, as posted in the last Guild newsletter, to allocate $300 for the improvement and cleanup of the guild’s storage unit. The funds will be used for shelving and other organizational items that will enable the guild to move its items to a smaller unit, saving the guild on monthly storage unit fees.

Barbara Victorino was scheduled to show the Guild the quilt presented to her in thanks for her ser-vice as President of the Guild, but she was not able to make the meeting.

New Business:

The Board will be hosting the next Community Service Day on Tuesday, April 18th. Many of the usu-al leaders of the monthly workday will be at Mt. Hope Quilt Camp.

No additional new business was presented.

Committee Reports:

Community Service – Nancy Colwell: During the next Community Service Day on April 18th, in addi-tion to the usual work items, the Committee will focus on cutting fabric for Christmas stockings. Bring mats and cutters for that purpose. Kits are now available for those who want to do machine quilting. At our next Guild meeting, there will be individuals from some of the organizations to which the Guild gives quilted items who will talk briefly about their organizations. We will also have binding demon-strations.

Programs – Barbara Baker: Tonight’s speaker will be Kim Huckabay of Brewer’s Notions. In June, we’ll have a representative from Hoffman’s Fabrics. There will be no meeting in July. In August, Beth Foust will speak about the challenges of longarm quilting.

Quilt Show Entries – Valerie Price: We are soliciting quilts for our quilt show in November. Enter your quilts by the June meeting and get a chance to win a gift certificate at the June meeting.

Quilt Show Raffle Baskets – Karen Ostiguy: We are looking for basket donations and individual items to be included in baskets, such as fat quarters. Karen has a list of items that have been donat-ed or baskets that have been pledged so far. She also has a list of suggested basket themes and basket items.

Ways and Means – Diane Hamilton: Ways and Means are taking orders for shirts and sweatshirts at

the meeting tonight.

Sutter Breast Cancer Auction – Vicky Murphy: The date of the auction is November 4th. Vicky showed a quilt that was anonymously donated by a member. Quilts that are donated will need a hanging sleeve and an entry form. Give donated quilts to Vicky Murphy or one of the designated shops that are accepting donated quilts for the auction. To date, the quilt auction has raised $640,000 for breast cancer research.

Quilt Show – Colleen Voet: Postcards are available for members to take to quilt shops and other venues. Linda Cherry volunteered to be the Volunteer Coordinator for the quilt show.

Mt. Hope Quilt Camp – Halli Tucker and Sheila Pond: There are 31 campers signed up. Ben Frank-lin is offering a 20% discount on merchandise for those who request a coupon during the week of camp. Campers are reminded to bring headsets if they want to listen to music or other audio. They reminded campers of the fabrics for the various games and raffles. Campers can arrive at camp at 1:00PM on Tuesday.

Lost and Found: A white handled, blue tote bag with the words “Let’s Quilt” on it was left at the last meeting. See Martha Overman.

After break, Barbara Baker introduced the speaker, Kim Huckabay from Brewer’s Notions. She dis-played and discussed many of the products she wholesales to smaller quilt and fabric shops.

Show and Tell: Several members displayed their quilts.

Drawings were held for Sew and Sew and Block of the Month.

The next General Meeting is Monday, May 1, 2017 at 7:00PM.

The next Executive Board Meeting is Monday April 24, 2017 at 6:30PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00PM.

Respectfully submitted by: Bobbie Paclik, on behalf of Sally Vandervort
