REOPENING
THE BLUEPRINT TO MOVING FORWARD IN 2020
©2020 SANDY ALEXANDER INC.
The world has changed. With the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic the
way we conduct business will not be how it was six months ago.
Domestic and foreign governments have embraced “social distancing”
as the greatest way to combat the spread of this disease and are
recommending individuals protect themselves, and their families, by
simply staying away from others. Seems easier said than done, especially
as our businesses become increasingly affected by the lack of workers
and customers alike. We are entering a time where most employees will
remain working from remote locations - primarily their homes - for the
immediate future, and when they do return to the workplace it will look
much different than it did. No matter the industry you work in, there will be
some sort of new normal. Your uniform may change. The way you clock in
will be different. The first thing you do in your routine will not be the same.
We will all adapt - eventually - and the way we conduct our businesses
will rely on a number of things that give assurances to our customers, our
employees, and ourselves that it is indeed safe to be there. The biggest
thing we will rely on: visual indicators.
sandyinc.comTHE PLAYBOOK to reopening in 2020
As marketing professionals we understand how visual collateral
impacts the consumer. We know that signage and visual marketing
collateral can help us capture the attention of the consumer and drive
them into the store. Additionally, without visual indicators a customer
can become lost, forever browsing without the subtle guidance of
an offering. But the new world will not just use visual marketing
to drive sales in the traditional way, the new world will use visual
marketing in corporate, retail, dining, healthcare, transportation, and
any public environment you can think of to create a sense of security.
Consumers will look for visual proof that it is safe to go inside your
place of business or else they just might not risk it.

what is
SOCIAL DISTANCINGSOCIAL DISTANCING [ soh-shuhl dis-tuhns-ing ]
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), “social distancing” or “physical distancing” means
keeping space between yourself and other people outside of your home.
It is the act of limiting close contact with individuals outside of your
immediate household - including extended family and close friends.1
The embracing of social distancing by the public means that you will have
to embrace social distancing as well. What this means is limited entry into
your business environments, clear instructions to patrons and employees
regarding traffic flow to keep customers 6 feet apart, and physical barriers
installed into your location(s) to aid in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
Increased sanitation measures are highly suggested by the CDC.

As people return to work they will look for assurances from their
employers that the normal office environment they are used to has
changed to follow social distancing guidelines and COVID-19 prevention
methods. Most employees have become quite comfortable with work-
from-home life. Therefore, it will prove prudent to use your resources
to market to your own employees the changes and measures you have
installed into your corporate environments. Employees will expect to feel
safe in the workplace and there are several options for businesses to
alleviate these fears.

Encouraging customers to reenter retail locations will only be part of the battle.
Assuring them that it is a safe environment to purchase your products is the other
half. It will become increasingly pivotal to drive shoppers into your brick and mortar
stores with your marketing, but at the same time provide them the visual indicators
that you care about their safety. Changing the looks of your store environments
by increased social distancing messaging, signage, and PPE installations will give
you an advantage in driving sales. It is also important to remember that messaging
will be key. Alarmist signage may trigger fear, so terms such as “welcome back” or
“reopening” may indicate safety with a warmer message.

Most dining concepts have pivoted towards to-go and carry-out only methods of
operation. So far the public feels comfortable with curb-side pickup and online
ordering for these to-go meals. Through research we have found that “tamper
proof” to-go containers and delivery to your car have largely been received as a
positive action from dining brands, but the question remains. What should we
expect in a Post COVID-19 dining environment? Studies indicate that dining
customers hope to know that more precautionary measures are taken for the
reopening of dining establishments. In a recent survey we commissioned, we
found that 65% of our survey takers will require evidence that the establishment
is practicing social distancing and has increased their sanitation efforts prior to
returning to dining environments. Patrons want to know that the staff is healthy,
the environment is constantly sanitized, and they will be properly spaced when
seated at tables from other customers. However, the key will be the messaging as
our survey also indicated that customers will not feel comfortable with alarmist
signage, expecting the restaurant to provide some normalcy to the dining experience.2

flowCOUNTER•• Automatic Visitor Measurement and Limitation System
•• The flowCounter counts each person who enters and exits an area.
This helps to ensure that the maximum number of allowed visitors
isn’t exceeded. As soon as the capacity limit is reached, the system
signals that no more individuals are allowed to enter. Ensuring that
all guidelines are adhered to helping to limit the spread of
COVID-19.
•• Here’s how it works - A camera is mounted in an elevated position
to capture the entrance and exit area. A video signal is sent to the
flowCounter, which measures how many people enter or leave a
given area. The result is a continuously updated overview of the
number of visitors.
