“The Power of His Resurrection”

Life Church of the Magic Valley

Pastor Kevin Lindley 4-8-12

The Holy Spirit is the majestic working of the power of the resurrection in you”

1Corinthians 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 2Corinthians 4:10We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.

Colossians 3:1-7 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. Philippians 3:10 "That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;"

The breakdown of verse ten has four statements:

First, "that I may know Him." Second, "and the power of His resurrection." Third, "the fellowship of His suffering." Fourth, "being made conformable unto His death."

First, "that I may know Him." This statement alone takes seeking God to a new level of personal relationship and intimacy. No other religion on earth has ever offered a relational dialog and partnering with their god as Christianity does. This action of resurrection completely restored man’s relationship to the Father with the

potential for greater intimacy and a growing relationship. The word Know Him in the Greek is…: KNOW G1097 gino sko ghin-oce'-ko

A prolonged form of a primary verb; to “know” (absolutely), in a great variety of applications and with many implications (as shown at left, with others not thus clearly expressed): - allow, be aware (of), feel, (have) known (-ledge), perceive, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.

KEVIN’S expanded rendering

KNOW ino s o ghin-oce'-ko To know absolutely, to allow openness and transparency, to be aware of the others presence, feeling them through the 5 senses, perceiving motivations and desires of the other, resolved

to stand with the other person, open communication to speak one mind being sure and gaining understanding of the others thoughts and ideas.

Second, "and the power of His resurrection." This is the experience of living in the power of God, living in the resurrection of God . This is not only the power to over come sin, trials and lifes circumstances but also the power to be naturally supernatural and demonstrate the Kingdom. The resurrection power raises the dead, restores sight to the blind, frees the tormented, heals the cripple, destroys sickness and disease, this literally knowing the power of His resurrection.

POWER G1411 dunamis doo'-nam-is From G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself): - ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work

Rom 9:17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." Rom 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit Rom 15:19 by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ. 1Co 2:4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 1Co 2:5 so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power. 1Co 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Third, "the fellowship of His suffering." Fellowship includes is to participate in, to identify with, to be actively be involved, in His suffering. Suffering involves physical pain, rejected, being abandoned, being hated, spoken as evil and wrongly accused. Persecution from your family is one of the most painful and dama in thin s to demoralize a person’s identity. Jesus would be rejected by his own people as their messiah, His Idenitiy had to literally be tied directly to His heavenly Father

Fourth, "being made conformable unto His death." This is none other that the complete submission to the will of God and the death of your own personal agenda. Jesus became conformable to the will of His heavenly father even to the extent of horrendous torture and death. Paul was literally experiencing being conformable to the death of Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior. The concept of being dead to your self and alive to Jesus and His life in you is a constaint theme in the gospel messa e…

Rom 6:4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Rom 6:11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Page 3: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

Rom 7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. Rom 8:10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Rom 11:15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? Rom 14:9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

JESUS TEACHING ON THE NATURE OF THE RESURRECTION

Matthew 22:28-33 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?" 29 Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

SCRIPTURES TEACHING THE NATURE OF THE RESURRECTION

The Sadducees unbelief in the resurrection. At the resurrection no marriage or giving in marriage We will be like the old testament Angel of the Lord God is the God of the resurrected living

1. Matthew 22:23 [ Marriage at the Resurrection ] That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no

resurrection, came to him with a question.

2. Matthew 22:28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them

were married to her?”

resurrection G386 anastasis an-as'-tas-is

From G450; a standing up again, that is, (literally) a resurrection from death (individual, general or by implication (its author)), or (figuratively) a (moral) recovery (of spiritual truth): - raised to life again, resurrection, rise from the dead, that should rise, rising again.

3. Luke 20:27 [ The Resurrection and Marriage ] Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no

resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.

4. Luke 20:33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to

her?”

Luke 20:35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from

the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,

Luke 20:36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they

are children of the resurrection.

In other words resurrection means, rising again or Living again.

Matthew 22:30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be

like the angels in heaven.

5. Matthew 22:31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you,

6. Mark 12:18 [ Marriage at the Resurrection ] Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,

came to him with a question.

7. Mark 12:23 At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

The resurrection of Jesus brought about a pre-resurrection of the saints of old.

RESURRECTION G1454 egersis eg'-er-sis From G1453; a resurgence (from death): - resurrection.

8. Matthew 27:53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city

and appeared to many people.

The resurrection SUNDAY morning

9. Matthew 28:1 [ The Resurrection ] After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary

Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

10. Mark 16:1 [ The Resurrection ] When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of

James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.

11. Luke 24:1 [ The Resurrection ] On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took

the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

12. THE RESURRECTION OF THE RIGHTEOUS

Luke 14:14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of

the righteous.”

13. John 11:24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

14. John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even

though he dies;

15. Acts 1:22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these

must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”)

16. Acts 2:31 Seeing what was ahead, he (David) spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not

abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.

17. Acts 4:2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in

Jesus the resurrection of the dead.

18. Acts 4:33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,

and much grace was upon them all.

19. Acts 17:18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of them

asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.”

They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

51. Acts 17:32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others

said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.”

52. Acts 23:6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in

the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. I stand on trial because of my hope

in the resurrection of the dead.”

53. Acts 23:8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits,

but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.

54. Acts 24:15 and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both

the righteous and the wicked.

55. Acts 24:21 unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: ‘It is concerning the

resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.’”

20. Acts 25:19 Instead, they had some points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a dead

man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive.

21. Acts 26:8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?

22. Acts 26:23 that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to

his own people and to the Gentiles.”

23. Romans 1:4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by

with him in his resurrection.

25. 1 Corinthians 15:1 [ The Resurrection of Christ ] Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I

preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.

56. 1 Corinthians 15:12-13 [ The Resurrection of the Dead ] But if it is preached that Christ has been

raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there

is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

1 Corinthians 15:15-16 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have

testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are

not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.

26. 1 Corinthians 15:20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have

fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also

through a man.

27. 1 Corinthians 15:29 Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead?

If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them?

28. 1 Corinthians 15:32 If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained?

If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

29. 1 Corinthians 15:35 The Resurrection Body ] But someone may ask, “How are the dead raised?

With what kind of body will they come?”

30. 1 Corinthians 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is

perishable, it is raised imperishable;

31. 1 Corinthians 15:52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will

sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

106. 1 Peter 1:21 Through him you believe in God, Who raised Him from the dead and glorified him, and

so your faith and hope are in God.

107. 1 Peter 4:5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

108. 1 Peter 4:6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they

might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the

spirit.

109. Jude 1:12 These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—

shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn

trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead.

110. Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the

ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,

111. Revelation 1:17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me

and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.

112. Revelation 1:18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I

hold the keys of death and Hades.

Revelation 2:23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who

searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

113. Revelation 3:1 [ To the Church in Sardis ] “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are

the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a

reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

151. Revelation 11:18 The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for

judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who

reverence your name, both small and great— and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

152. Revelation 14:13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die

in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds

will follow them.”

This is speaking of the resurrection (above)

153. Revelation 16:3 The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like

that of a dead man, and every living thing in the sea died.

154. Revelation 20:5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were

ended.) This is the first resurrection.

155. Revelation 20:11 [ The Dead Are Judged ] Then I saw a great white throne and him who was

seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

156. Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books

were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to

what they had done as recorded in the books.

157. Revelation 20:13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the

dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.

Lenard Ravenhill said; “The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the standard of power in the New Testament.” If Jesus Christ had only died on a cross and was not been resurrected he would not have even been acknowledged in history and the church would never have been birthed, His claims would have fallen unsubstantiated The power of the resurrection undid the work of the enemy. This action of resurrection completely restored man’s relationship to the Father. The resurrection gave authority over the earth and defeated the effects of the sin nature. The crucifixion brought cleansing from sin but the resurrection brought the victory over sin.

Calvary expresses the love of God.

The resurrection explains the power of God.

"I AM the resurrection."

The resurrection isn't part of my theology, the resurrection IS A PERSON. Because Jesus rose everybody will rise.

FEELINGS verse FAITH

I was reading of Jesus when He went into the garden and it says, "As he went into the garden He was in great heaviness of spirit." Don't let the devil trick you on your emotions. Your standing with God does not change because your feelings change. I am the resurrection and the Life.

BIBLICAL RESSURRECTIONS

Who did He raise from the dead? He raised Jairus' daughter, He raised the son of the widow of Nain, and Lazarus. Three people He raised from the dead. Elijah and Elisha both raised the dead in the Old testament times

DEATH HATH NO MORE DOMINION OVER HIM.

As Tozer said repeatedly,

"Len, remember, keep this in your mind. Remember this: that while you and I are on earth we are passing through enemy territory." Yes, it's hostile country. The old enemy is going to shoot darts at us. Oppositions are going to come. We are speckled birds . The world doesn't like what we do. Doesn't like what we say. Doesn't like the way we act. It is a, corrupt, evil, sinful, wicked world. It follows its god. It is ruled by the prince of the power of the air. There is an eternal antagonism between the two. But keep your head up. Remember that your seeking the Holy Spirit can draw moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day, Month by Month, year by Year…on the resurrection life of Jesus, because the resurrection life of Jesus is the Spirit of Him who raised up Jesus from the dead. The Holy Spirit is the majestic working of the power of the resurrection in you”

The death of the Lord Jesus, the cross, proves the love of God. The resurrection proves the power of God.

And "if He were risen from the dead," God intended we have under our feet what He had: The world,

the flesh, the devil.

Because if I really died. If that baptism I went into is a symbol only of something that had happened at the moment Jesus died, I died with Him. The moment that He rose, I rose with Him... And I am not dragging a withered limb. He did a complete job. Sure there are corrections, there are improvements, there is growth in grace.

But He died that we might be cleansed,

He died that we might be pure, He died that we might lead a victorious life. The resurrection life of Jesus quickening our mortal bodies. One day that resurrection will actually take place in a triumphant shattering of all the graves. They are going to come "from earth's wide bounds and ocean's farthest coasts, through gates of pearls will stream in a countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia.

Thessalonians 4:13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.

1 Corinthians 15 (NIV) The Resurrection Chapter

The Resurrection of Christ

1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you

have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you.

Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance

[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the

Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

5 and that he

appeared to Peter,[b]

and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers

at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James,

then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the

church of God. 10

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I

worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11

Whether, then, it was I or

they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

The Resurrection of the Dead

Page 13: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

13

12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no

resurrection of the dead? 13

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14

And

if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15

More than that, we are then found

to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did

not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16

For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised

either. 17

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18

Then those also who

have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19

If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than

all men.

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

21 For since

death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22

For as in Adam all die, so

in Christ all will be made alive. 23

But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those

who belong to him. 24

Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has

destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25

For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his

feet. 26

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27

For he “has put everything under his feet.”[c]

Now when it

says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put

everything under Christ. 28

When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put

everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

29 Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised

at all, why are people baptized for them? 30

And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour? 31

I die

every day—I mean that, brothers—just as surely as I glory over you in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32

If I fought wild

beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised,

“Let us eat and drink,

for tomorrow we die.”[d]

33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

34 Come back to your senses as you ought, and

stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.

The Resurrection Body

35 But someone may ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”

36 How foolish!

What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37

When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but

just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38

But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each

kind of seed he gives its own body. 39

All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals have

another, birds another and fish another. 40

There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the

splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41

The sun has

one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;

43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;

44 it is sown a natural

body, it is raised a spiritual body.

If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45

So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living

being”[e]

; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46

The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that

the spiritual. 47

The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48

As was the earthly

man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49

And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we[f]

bear the likeness of the man from

heaven.

Page 14: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

14

50 I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable

inherit the imperishable. 51

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52

in a

flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised

imperishable, and we will be changed. 53

For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the

mortal with immortality. 54

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with

immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”[g]

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?

Where, O death, is your sting?”[h]

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory

through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of

the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Amplified Bible (AMP)

1 Corinthians 15

1AND NOW let me remind you [since it seems to have escaped you], brethren, of the Gospel (the glad tidings of

salvation) which I proclaimed to you, which you welcomed and accepted and upon which your faith rests,

2And by which you are saved, if you hold fast and keep firmly what I preached to you, unless you believed at

first without effect and all for nothing.

3For I passed on to you first of all what I also had received, that Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died

for our sins in accordance with [what] the Scriptures [foretold],

4That He was buried, that He arose on the third day as the Scriptures foretold,

5And [also] that He appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the Twelve.

6Then later He showed Himself to more than five hundred brethren at one time, the majority of whom are still

alive, but some have fallen asleep [in death].

7Afterward He was seen by James, then by all the apostles (the special messengers),

8And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one prematurely and born dead [

[a]no better than an unperfected

fetus among living men].

9For I am the least [worthy] of the apostles, who am not fit or deserving to be called an apostle, because I once

wronged and pursued and molested the church of God [oppressing it with cruelty and violence].

10But by the grace (the unmerited favor and blessing) of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not

[found to be] for nothing (fruitless and without effect). In fact, I worked harder than all of them [the apostles],

though it was not really I, but the grace (the unmerited favor and blessing) of God which was with me.

Page 15: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

15

11So, whether then it was I or they, this is what we preach and this is what you believed [what you adhered to,

trusted in, and relied on].

12But now if Christ (the Messiah) is preached as raised from the dead, how is it that some of you say that there

is no resurrection of the dead?

13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not risen;

14And if Christ has not risen, then our preaching is in vain [it amounts to nothing] and your faith is devoid of

truth and is fruitless (without effect, empty, imaginary, and unfounded).

15We are even discovered to be misrepresenting God, for we testified of Him that He raised Christ, Whom He

did not raise in case it is true that the dead are not raised.

16For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised;

17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is mere delusion [futile, fruitless], and you are still in your sins

[under the control and penalty of sin];

18And further, those who have died in [

[b]spiritual fellowship and union with] Christ have perished (are lost)!

19If we who are [abiding] in Christ have hope only in this life and that is all, then we are of all people most

miserable and to be pitied.

20But the fact is that Christ (the Messiah) has been raised from the dead, and He became the firstfruits of those

who have fallen asleep [in death].

21For since [it was] through a man that death [came into the world, it is] also through a Man that the

resurrection of the dead [has come].

22For just as [because of their

[c]union of nature] in Adam all people die, so also [by virtue of their

[d]union of

nature] shall all in Christ be made alive.

23But each in his own rank and turn: Christ (the Messiah) [is] the firstfruits, then those who are Christ's [own

will be resurrected] at His coming.

24After that comes the end (the completion), when He delivers over the kingdom to God the Father after

rendering inoperative and abolishing every [other] rule and every authority and power.

25For [Christ] must be King and reign until He has put all [His] enemies under His feet.

26The last enemy to be subdued and abolished is death.

27For He [the Father] has put all things in subjection under His [Christ's] feet. But when it says, All things are

put in subjection [under Him], it is evident that He [Himself] is excepted Who does the subjecting of all things

to Him.

Page 16: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

16

28However, when everything is subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also subject Himself to [the Father]

Who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all [be everything to everyone, supreme, the indwelling

and controlling factor of life].

29Otherwise, what do people mean by being [themselves] baptized in behalf of the dead? If the dead are not

raised at all, why are people baptized for them?

30[For that matter], why do I live [dangerously as I do, running such risks that I am] in peril every hour?

31[I assure you] by the pride which I have in you in [your

[e]fellowship and union with] Christ Jesus our Lord,

that I die daily [I face death every day and die to self].

32What do I gain if, merely from the human point of view, I fought with [wild] beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are

not raised [at all], let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will be dead.

33Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good

manners and morals and character.

34Awake [

[f]from your drunken stupor and return] to sober sense and your right minds, and sin no more. For

some of you have not the knowledge of God [you are utterly and willfully and disgracefully ignorant, and

continue to be so, lacking the sense of God's presence and all true knowledge of Him]. I say this to your shame.

35But someone will say, How can the dead be raised? With what [kind of] body will they come forth?

36You foolish man! Every time you plant seed, you sow something that does not come to life [germinating,

springing up, and growing] unless it dies first.

37Nor is the seed you sow then the body which it is going to have [later], but it is a naked kernel, perhaps of

wheat or some of the rest of the grains.

38But God gives to it the body that He plans and sees fit, and to each kind of seed a body of its own.

39For all flesh is not the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for beasts, another for birds, and

another for fish.

40There are heavenly bodies (sun, moon, and stars) and there are earthly bodies (men, animals, and plants), but

the beauty and glory of the heavenly bodies is of one kind, while the beauty and glory of earthly bodies is a

different kind.

41The sun is glorious in one way, the moon is glorious in another way, and the stars are glorious in their own

[distinctive] way; for one star differs from and surpasses another in its beauty and brilliance.

42So it is with the resurrection of the dead. [The body] that is sown is perishable and decays, but [the body] that

is resurrected is imperishable (immune to decay, immortal).

43It is sown in dishonor and humiliation; it is raised in honor and glory. It is sown in infirmity and weakness; it

is resurrected in strength and endued with power.

Page 17: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

17

44It is sown a natural (physical) body; it is raised a supernatural (a spiritual) body. [As surely as] there is a

physical body, there is also a spiritual body.

45Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being (an individual personality); the last Adam

(Christ) became a life-giving Spirit [restoring the dead to life].

46But it is not the spiritual life which came first, but the physical and then the spiritual.

47The first man [was] from out of earth, made of dust (earthly-minded); the second Man [is] the Lord from out

of heaven.

48Now those who are made of the dust are like him who was first made of the dust (earthly-minded); and as is

[the Man] from heaven, so also [are those] who are of heaven (heavenly-minded).

49And just as we have borne the image [of the man] of dust, so shall we and so

[g]let us also bear the image [of

the Man] of heaven.

50But I tell you this, brethren, flesh and blood cannot [become partakers of eternal salvation and] inherit or

share in the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable (that which is decaying) inherit or share in the

imperishable (the immortal).

51Take notice! I tell you a mystery (a secret truth, an event decreed by the hidden purpose or counsel of God).

We shall not all fall asleep [in death], but we shall all be changed (transformed)

52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the [sound of the] last trumpet call. For a trumpet will sound, and

the dead [in Christ] will be raised imperishable (free and immune from decay), and we shall be changed

(transformed).

53For this perishable [part of us] must put on the imperishable [nature], and this mortal [part of us, this nature

that is capable of dying] must put on immortality (freedom from death).

54And when this perishable puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom from

death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed up (utterly vanquished [h]

forever) in

and unto victory.

55O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

56Now sin is the sting of death, and sin exercises its power

[i][upon the soul] through

[j][the abuse of] the Law.

57But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord

[always being superior, excelling, doing more than enough in the service of the Lord], knowing and being

continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile [it is never wasted or to no purpose].

The Message (MSG)

1 Corinthians 15

Resurrection

1-2Friends, let me go over the Message with you one final time— this Message that I proclaimed and that you

made your own; this Message on which you took your stand and by which your life has been saved. (I'm

assuming, now, that your belief was the real thing and not a passing fancy, that you're in this for good and

holding fast.)

3-9The first thing I did was place before you what was placed so emphatically before me: that the Messiah died

for our sins, exactly as Scripture tells it; that he was buried; that he was raised from death on the third day,

again exactly as Scripture says; that he presented himself alive to Peter, then to his closest followers, and later

to more than five hundred of his followers all at the same time, most of them still around (although a few have

since died); that he then spent time with James and the rest of those he commissioned to represent him; and that

he finally presented himself alive to me. It was fitting that I bring up the rear. I don't deserve to be included in

that inner circle, as you well know, having spent all those early years trying my best to stamp God's church

right out of existence.

10-11But because God was so gracious, so very generous, here I am. And I'm not about to let his grace go to

waste. Haven't I worked hard trying to do more than any of the others? Even then, my work didn't amount to all

that much. It was God giving me the work to do, God giving me the energy to do it. So whether you heard it

from me or from those others, it's all the same: We spoke God's truth and you entrusted your lives.

12-15Now, let me ask you something profound yet troubling. If you became believers because you trusted the

proclamation that Christ is alive, risen from the dead, how can you let people say that there is no such thing as

a resurrection? If there's no resurrection, there's no living Christ. And face it—if there's no resurrection for

Christ, everything we've told you is smoke and mirrors, and everything you've staked your life on is smoke and

mirrors. Not only that, but we would be guilty of telling a string of barefaced lies about God, all these affidavits

we passed on to you verifying that God raised up Christ—sheer fabrications, if there's no resurrection.

16-20If corpses can't be raised, then Christ wasn't, because he was indeed dead. And if Christ weren't raised,

then all you're doing is wandering about in the dark, as lost as ever. It's even worse for those who died hoping

in Christ and resurrection, because they're already in their graves. If all we get out of Christ is a little

inspiration for a few short years, we're a pretty sorry lot. But the truth is that Christ has been raised up, the first

in a long legacy of those who are going to leave the cemeteries.

21-28There is a nice symmetry in this: Death initially came by a man, and resurrection from death came by a

man. Everybody dies in Adam; everybody comes alive in Christ. But we have to wait our turn: Christ is first,

then those with him at his Coming, the grand consummation when, after crushing the opposition, he hands over

his kingdom to God the Father. He won't let up until the last enemy is down—and the very last enemy is death!

As the psalmist said, "He laid them low, one and all; he walked all over them." When Scripture says that "he

walked all over them," it's obvious that he couldn't at the same time be walked on. When everything and

everyone is finally under God's rule, the Son will step down, taking his place with everyone else, showing that

God's rule is absolutely comprehensive—a perfect ending!

29Why do you think people offer themselves to be baptized for those already in the grave? If there's no chance of

resurrection for a corpse, if God's power stops at the cemetery gates, why do we keep doing things that suggest

he's going to clean the place out someday, pulling everyone up on their feet alive?

30-33And why do you think I keep risking my neck in this dangerous work? I look death in the face practically

every day I live. Do you think I'd do this if I wasn't convinced of your resurrection and mine as guaranteed by

Page 19: The Power of His Resurrection Life Church of the Magic ...lifechurchmv.com/audio/audio-notes/2012/040812.pdf · 1 “The Power of His Resurrection” Life Church of the Magic Valley

19

the resurrected Messiah Jesus? Do you think I was just trying to act heroic when I fought the wild beasts at

Ephesus, hoping it wouldn't be the end of me? Not on your life! It's resurrection, resurrection, always

resurrection, that undergirds what I do and say, the way I live. If there's no resurrection, "We eat, we drink, the

next day we die," and that's all there is to it. But don't fool yourselves. Don't let yourselves be poisoned by this

anti-resurrection loose talk. "Bad company ruins good manners."

34Think straight. Awaken to the holiness of life. No more playing fast and loose with resurrection facts.

Ignorance of God is a luxury you can't afford in times like these. Aren't you embarrassed that you've let this

kind of thing go on as long as you have?

35-38Some skeptic is sure to ask, "Show me how resurrection works. Give me a diagram; draw me a picture.

What does this 'resurrection body' look like?" If you look at this question closely, you realize how absurd it is.

There are no diagrams for this kind of thing. We do have a parallel experience in gardening. You plant a

"dead" seed; soon there is a flourishing plant. There is no visual likeness between seed and plant. You could

never guess what a tomato would look like by looking at a tomato seed. What we plant in the soil and what

grows out of it don't look anything alike. The dead body that we bury in the ground and the resurrection body

that comes from it will be dramatically different.

39-41You will notice that the variety of bodies is stunning. Just as there are different kinds of seeds, there are

different kinds of bodies—humans, animals, birds, fish—each unprecedented in its form. You get a hint at the

diversity of resurrection glory by looking at the diversity of bodies not only on earth but in the skies—sun,

moon, stars—all these varieties of beauty and brightness. And we're only looking at pre-resurrection "seeds"—

who can imagine what the resurrection "plants" will be like!

42-44This image of planting a dead seed and raising a live plant is a mere sketch at best, but perhaps it will help

in approaching the mystery of the resurrection body—but only if you keep in mind that when we're raised, we're

raised for good, alive forever! The corpse that's planted is no beauty, but when it's raised, it's glorious. Put in

the ground weak, it comes up powerful. The seed sown is natural; the seed grown is supernatural—same seed,

same body, but what a difference from when it goes down in physical mortality to when it is raised up in

spiritual immortality!

45-49We follow this sequence in Scripture: The First Adam received life, the Last Adam is a life-giving Spirit.

Physical life comes first, then spiritual—a firm base shaped from the earth, a final completion coming out of

heaven. The First Man was made out of earth, and people since then are earthy; the Second Man was made out

of heaven, and people now can be heavenly. In the same way that we've worked from our earthy origins, let's

embrace our heavenly ends.

50I need to emphasize, friends, that our natural, earthy lives don't in themselves lead us by their very nature into

the kingdom of God. Their very "nature" is to die, so how could they "naturally" end up in the Life kingdom?

51-57But let me tell you something wonderful, a mystery I'll probably never fully understand. We're not all going

to die—but we are all going to be changed. You hear a blast to end all blasts from a trumpet, and in the time

that you look up and blink your eyes—it's over. On signal from that trumpet from heaven, the dead will be up

and out of their graves, beyond the reach of death, never to die again. At the same moment and in the same way,

we'll all be changed. In the resurrection scheme of things, this has to happen: everything perishable taken off

the shelves and replaced by the imperishable, this mortal replaced by the immortal. Then the saying will come

true:

Death swallowed by triumphant Life!

Who got the last word, oh, Death?

Oh, Death, who's afraid of you now?

It was sin that made death so frightening and law-code guilt that gave sin its leverage, its destructive power.

But now in a single victorious stroke of Life, all three—sin, guilt, death—are gone, the gift of our Master, Jesus

Christ. Thank God!

58With all this going for us, my dear, dear friends, stand your ground. And don't hold back. Throw yourselves

into the work of the Master, confident that nothing you do for him is a waste of time or effort.
