Remediation and Intervention

For more information, visit getfueled.com/remediation

Addressing the needs of individual students is a growing challenge to educators everywhere.

Each student has diff erent learning strengths and gaps, and that’s why many schools and districts are turning to online and blended learning for remediation and intervention to help:

• Quickly assess individual student skills mastery and defi ciencies

• Understand student mastery of state and national standards

• Develop customized learning paths for struggling students to improve outcomes

The FuelEd Solution

FuelEd helps you target your remediation and intervention challenges with a diverse mix of solutions:

• Our Anywhere Learning System (ALS) uses assessments to pinpoint gaps in student understanding and automatically prescribe content to bring students back on track. Teachers can customize content and track student performance data with powerful, easy-to-use tools.

• Our standards-aligned math solution, LearnBop, simulates a one-to-one tutoring experience by guiding students at their own pace through dynamic, interactive math problems.

• English language learners can accelerate their profi ciency with engaging, project-based, rigorous ELL curriculum from our partner Middlebury Interactive Languages.

• Your students can sharpen their skills and boost their test readiness with the highly engaging Stride, our award-winning, game-based, digital learning solution for intervention and supplemental learning.

• PEAK Library enables teachers to create customized learning paths, content, and assessments for struggling students and integrate high-quality content from a variety of sources.

Walker County Public Schools in Alabama had an undesirable graduation rate and a dropout rate almost twice the state average. Many of its high school students were behind in credits, at risk of dropping out, or needing alternative school settings.

The district turned to FuelEd’s Anywhere Learning System (ALS) for a variety of innovative new programs, including a revamped alternative school, daytime and evening credit recovery, and using ALS at all grade levels as a blended learning solution for remediation and other needs.

Since starting with ALS, the graduation rate has risen 14 points and the dropout rate has fallen 12 points—both now better than state averages. Attendance, grades, and grade-level promotions have also increased.

Credit Recovery and Dropout Prevention

For more information, visit getfueled.com/creditrecovery

More than 1.2 million high school students—about 7 percent—drop out of high school each year, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

That’s why many schools are turning to online credit recovery programs to:

• Give students the opportunity to catch up with peers, build self-esteem, and graduate on time

• Provide a cost-effective, flexible way to help students get the credits they need to graduate from high school

The FuelEd Solution

With FuelEd credit recovery solutions, courses can be delivered during school hours, in a designated school learning lab, during summer school, or at home. Our credit recovery courses are engaging and designed to increase comprehension and build confidence.

FuelEd Online Credit Recovery Courses are designed especially for students who did not pass a course initially but learned enough to make a complete repetition of it unnecessary. With our diagnostic-driven model, students can test out of the material they previously mastered in a course so they can focus on the more difficult concepts they missed the first time around. The online courses are crafted to keep students on task and moving forward, utilizing a “chunked” methodology to increase retention as well as pre-recorded audio, pre-teaching of vocabulary, and if needed, English language learner support.

Courses can be taught by your teachers or FuelEd instructors. Monitoring student progress is easy with the PEAK platform.

The Anywhere Learning System (ALS) is also a widely implemented, effective way to target credit recovery needs, especially for those students with learning gaps of a grade level or greater. Its built-in assessments help identify precise gaps in students’ skills and understanding. ALS empowers teachers to prescribe and customize content that puts students on a path to mastery.

One third of its high school students were credit deficient, and the credit recovery program wasn’t effective. That’s when the leaders of Williams Junior Senior High School in northern California turned to FuelEd for help.

The school implemented a new credit recovery program using FuelEd online credit recovery courses. Students worked at their own pace in two computer labs at the school on Saturday mornings. State-certified, online FuelEd instructors were the teachers of record, two Williams teachers provided one-to-one help, and two Williams high school seniors were also in the labs to tutor students.

In August 2013, at the program’s outset, there were 120 credit deficient students. A year later, there were 14, and by June 2015, there were none. The school achieved a 100 percent graduation rate last spring, as all 96 students who entered as freshmen in the fall of 2011 graduated in May 2015.

English Language Learners

For more information, visit getfueled.com/ell

English language learners (ELL) are the fastest growing population in U.S. schools, according the U.S. Department of Education.

By 2025, it is anticipated that nearly one out of every four public school students will be an English language learner. Schools and districts are turning to online and blended learning to:

• Engage English language learners to help facilitate language acquisition and improve student outcomes

• Cost-effectively support this growing student population

The FuelEd Solution

Fuel Education offers a new way to engage English language learners that helps them grasp the complexities of our language and culture through:

• Learning activities that connect to the student’s prior experiences

• Complex thinking and challenging activities

• Language and literacy development

• Oral and written interpretation of readings and media

• Project-oriented peer conversations

The supplemental blended instructional curriculum developed by our partner, Middlebury Interactive Languages, allows students in grades 4–10 to learn the fundamentals of academic English while completing projects that relate to English language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science.

The ELL curriculum is written by PhD-level academics and language education experts to help students accelerate their English language learning. It features grade-appropriate themes specifically designed to engage elementary and middle school students. The focus is on academic English; critical thinking; vocabulary building; and developing communication skills through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Teachers can track student progress and generate detailed, data-rich reports through the PEAK platform.

English language learners comprise about 18 percent of the student population of Hartford Public Schools in Connecticut. The 3,300 ELL students have diverse backgrounds and speak more than 80 languages.

The district launched a pilot program for the 2014–2015 school year using Middlebury Interactive Languages’ ELL curriculum. The program’s rigorous approach accelerates learning and involves real-world situations. It included teacher training in Middlebury’s latest language learning practices and technologies.

The students in the pilot program outperformed the district’s other ELL students on benchmark reading assessments. Students became more engaged and self-directed, and attendance improved. Amid praise from teachers and administrators, the district expanded the program to reach more students in 2015–2016.

Summer School and Extended Learning

For more information, visit getfueled.com/summer

Is there a typical school year or a typical school day anymore?

The growing needs of diverse student populations are challenging schools and districts with how best to serve them outside of traditional school schedules. For a wide variety of reasons, more students are seeking opportunities provided through extended learning and summer school programs.

Do your students need to catch up? Get ahead? Get ready for high school or college? Explore languages, electives, or career options?

The FuelEd Solution

FuelEd can help you enhance your existing extended learning and summer school programs or start new ones from the ground up. FuelEd Online Courses provides hundreds of engaging choices for students in grades 6–12, whether they’re looking for credit recovery or original credit courses.

With FuelEd Online Courses, your middle and high school students will be able to:

• Get on track with credit recovery courses

• Prepare for the challenge of high school with Algebra, English I, and Biology

• Get ahead with more than 170 original credit courses, including 14 AP courses

• Become inspired with CTE electives such as Veterinary Science, Fashion and Interior Design, Game Design, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Intro to Culinary Arts

• Gain a global perspective with engaging world language courses from Middlebury Interactive Languages

FuelEd Online Courses are delivered through the PEAK platform, with instruction from your teachers or from our highly qualified, certified teachers.

Two summers ago, the North Clackamas School District in suburban Portland, Oregon, saw enrollment in their summer school program more than double.

To handle the demand, the district partnered with FuelEd to offer a wide variety of original credit and credit recovery courses. FuelEd’s highly qualified, certified teachers provided online instruction at four labs at a central location while district teachers “floated” through the labs for additional support. And the district worked with FuelEd educational consultants to improve the enrollment process, track and monitor student progress, use analytics to identify when students needed assistance, provide instructional support and supplemental content, and train mentors on the curriculum and technology platform.

With a record 496 enrollments—and 410 completions—the expanded program saw an 83 percent course passing rate.

With increasing student populations and tighter budgets, schools and districts are challenged to serve more diverse students with fewer resources.

Many educators are turning to online and blended learning to help:

• Provide individualized learning

• Boost graduation rates

• Provide more opportunities for advanced learners

• Improve state standardized test scores

• Ensure college readiness

The FuelEd Solution

FuelEd’s expansive course catalog includes Core, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses that allow you to meet each student at his or her point of need. All FuelEd Online Courses have been crafted based on extensive education research, are aligned to state and national standards, and are designed to prepare students for state and other high stakes exams.

• In Core courses, topics are broken into discrete modules that are taught in tandem with the framework students need to develop strong study skills. Rich, engaging content with interactive demonstrations and activities help students absorb and retain information.

• Honors courses are designed for advanced students. These rigorous courses require students to synthesize and evaluate information and concepts from multiple sources and read texts typically assigned in college-level courses.

• AP courses from FuelEd are college-level courses that follow curriculum specified by the College Board. These courses are designed to prepare students for success on AP exams, as well as the opportunity to earn credit at most of the nation’s colleges and universities.

All courses are delivered on the PEAK platform and can be taught by FuelEd’s certified instructors, or we can help you train your teachers with our extensive Professional Learning programs.

Poudre School District Global Academy (PGA) in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a full-time hybrid school. More than 200 students attend blended classes on campus and study online from home using FuelEd Online Courses. Since opening in 2009, some 500 PGA students in grades K–12 have used FuelEd Core, Honors, and AP courses. About 500 students each year at other district schools also take supplemental online courses from Fuel Education.

In Spring 2015, PGA middle and elementary school students averaged between 140% and 242% of typical growth in math and reading, as measured by the NWEA MAP assessments. PGA students in nearly all grades exceeded state averages in math and English on PARCC assessments. The previous year, PGA was among the top-ranked schools in Colorado for student growth across all grades.

Blended Learning

Now in its sixth year, Springs Studio for Academic Excellence in Colorado Springs, Colorado, continues to achieve success with project-based blended learning in a unique studio setting. Originally founded as an online school in response to district overcrowding, the school has evolved to serve more than 500 students in grades K–12. The school is now housed in an innovative, open-space facility crafted from a former warehouse that is sometimes referred to as a cross between Starbucks and Google.

Springs Studio uses FuelEd curriculum. It uses its own teachers for most classes, while state-certified FuelEd instructors teach world languages and some electives. Project-based blended learning is a major focus at all grade levels. Teachers tutor and mentor students individually or in small groups.

The school has continued to outperform the district and state in growth and graduation rate, and 78 percent of its 2015 graduates went directly to college.
