Upcoming Events Pointers From the Principal By Pa Blaszczyk As parents we know children pick up on what parents expect from them, and they are likely to rise to the occasions. Try these suggestions for setting and communicating high, but reasonable expectations for your child. State your expectations. You can be direct and say, “I expect you to finish homework before you get to use the iPad.” You can be indirect, “When you graduate from high school and go to college…” Let your child know your expectations of them. Be realistic. Your child will be more likely to meet expectations if they are within reach. For example, if several of your child’s assessments in math are lower than usual, it may be reasonable to expect them to add an additional 15 minutes of math practice to their homework routine rather than an hour. Make attendance a priority. Let your child know that you expect them to attend school all day, every day, unless they’re sick or there is a family emergency. Show your child that you value attendance by scheduling vacations and, when possible medical appointments outside of school hours. There have been lots of events this month: Mandatory Parent Grade Level Meetings, High School Fair, First Family Night, Fall Field Day, DACA Forum, and We Learn Together (kindergarten parent group supporting learning in the home.) We at POP know that we cannot meet all your children’s needs. Through the years we have developed community partnerships with agencies that provide educational and social programs for our children. Too often our children say they are bored at home with little to do but play video games or watch TV. Though I enjoy these activities, I also know that I need to have other activities and hobbies that bring me happiness and confidence. Here is a list of programs that many POP students have been involved in for many years. I hope that you will call me or Mr Grodsky to learn more about these programs and how your child(ren) can have greater joy in their lives having fun and learning with other children. Thank you! As parents we know children pick up on what

parents expect from them, and they are likely to rise

to the occasions. Try these suggestions for

setting and communicating high, but reasonable

expectations for your child.

State your expectations. You can be direct and say, “I

Family School Partnership

Dear Families,

POP has had a busy beginning to the new school year! There

El poder de las expectativas Como padres sabemos que los niños pueden entender lo que los padres esperan de ellos, y que probablemente se comporten a la altura de las ocasiones. Trate estas sugerencias para establecer y comunicar las expectativas altas, pero razonables para su hijo (a). Establecer las expectativas. Puede ser directo y decir, "Espero que termines la tarea antes de utilizar el iPad". Usted puede ser indirecto, "cuando te gradúes

de la escuela preparatoria y asistas a la Universidad..." Deje que su hijo (a) conozca las expectativas para ellos. Ser realistas. Será más probable que su hijo (a) cumpla con las expectativas si estas están a su alcance. Por ejemplo, si varias de las evaluaciones de su hijo (a) en matemáticas son más bajas de lo habitual, puede ser razonable esperar que para practicar matemáticas agreguen a su rutina de tareas 15 minutos en lugar de una hora. Hacer de la asistencia una prioridad. Deje que su hijo (a) conozca que usted espera que asista a la escuela todo el día, todos los días, a menos que estén enfermos o por una emergencia familiar. Muéstrele a su hijo (a) que usted valora la asistencia al programar vacaciones y las cita medicas fuera del horario escolar cuando es posible.

Estimadas familias,

¡POP ha tenido un inicio del año escolar muy ocupado! Hemos tenido bastantes eventos este mes: Reuniones para Padres de Familia Obligatorias para distintos grados, La Feria de Escuelas Preparatorias, primera Noche de Familia, Día de Campo del Otoño, Foro acerca de DACA y Aprendiendo Juntos (Grupo de Padres de Familia del Jardín de Infancia para Apoyar el Aprendizaje en el Hogar.)

En POP sabemos que no podemos satisfacer todas las necesidades de sus hijos. A través de los años hemos desarrollado asociaciones comunitarias con las agencias que ofrecen programas educativos y sociales para nuestros hijos. Muy a menudo nuestros hijos expresan su aburrimiento en casa con poco que hacer sino jugar videojuegos o ver la televisión. Aunque también disfruto de estas actividades, también sé que es necesario tener otras actividades y pasatiempos que me proporcionan felicidad y confianza

Aquí está una lista de programas en las que bastantes estudiantes de POP han participado por varios años. Espero que me llame o al Sr. Grodsky para aprender más sobre estos programas y cómo su hijo (a) puede tener mayor ale-gría en su vida, divirtiéndose y aprendiendo con otros niños.
