Calendars: October Event Calendar Serving us in October

The Prayer Line

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Well, here we are in the first month of our vacant pastorate. Let's see how many changes have come about since the departure of Pastor Airey! We've conducted lay-lead worship services; Bible studies have been meeting; Wonder Window has had their open house; we met in a parish planning session; plans are unfolding for a number of activities including our Oktoberfest celebration, and various board meetings are taking place planning for our future. Not the least is the call committee who has undertaken the responsibility for locating our next pastor. I would say that it looks like not many changes have taken place with all these activities swirling around us.

A lot of people, your fellow members at Lutheran Church of Prayer, have stepped up and filled roles that they may not have considered doing in the past. Praise God for such activities and the people to conduct them. No one can do all of this work by themselves and I am truly grateful for all those who have volunteered to help out during this time of vacancy.

It has been mentioned several times at meetings and in the announcements after the worship service that it is the desire of the Church of Prayer leadership to continue our activities in as normal a process as we can. For the most part this has been accomplished. We are still struggling with finding a Lutheran minister to consecrate the elements in a Communion worship service. We have notified our district leaders and they have assured us that they are working on this situation. As soon as we know a schedule for Communion worship we will publish that and let everyone know the date or dates of availability for October. As it stands now it looks like we will have November and December covered for Communion services. Not knowing how long it will take for us to call a new pastor we will make plans even further into the future. Meanwhile, let us be reminded that we are safely in the Lord’s hands. He will guide us and protect us and we need to remember that the new pastor for our congregation has already been selected by Him and all we need to do is to follow our process to call this man to our congregation.

May God's blessings be on each and every one of us as we continue to worship and serve Him.

Altar Circle Meeting Saturday, November 14 at 9:00 a.m.—Inside the Church

Please join us for a brief meeting on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. inside the church.

It’s time to determine assignments for 2016, as well as to discuss the needs of the upcoming Thanksgiving/Christmas season, etc

Anyone interested in the duties of Altar Circle and becoming a member please attend. We love to have new members! No experience necessary!

Altar Circle members perform an important function in the church by preparing the altar for Sunday worship. The duties include preparing the communion trays, checking that all candles function properly, confirm that the proper Paraments are being used and remove/replace dust covers as needed etc.

We would like to encourage the ladies of Lutheran Church of Prayer to join us in “Serving the Lord with Gladness” in fulfilling these duties. It is a wonderful fellowship and way to gain new friendships by being an active part of your church family.

Your serving time can be as limited as your time allows. Members are always willing to step in and help others when needed.

Please think about it, pray about it and join us on November 14th.

Wonder Window School Board Tim Hartnett, Chairman

Wonder Window started off with a bang this year. On September 8th, we

hosted Open House for the parents of our Wonder Window students. It was very well attended and the teachers did a great job of displaying the work their students had been doing. Needless to say, the parents were very impressed and we heard lots of positive comments about our program. We would also like to thank you for the cookies you provided. Once again, you went over and above and we really appreciate it.

We are in the midst of our first fundraiser of the year, the Save Around coupon books. We’ve noticed that they have expanded their offers this year and there are lots of opportunities to save money by using the coupons. If you haven’t ordered yours yet, let us know and we will set one aside for you. If you like to save money, these books are a great $20 investment. As we look forward to October, we have some neat activities planned. The children will be having their Western Round Up on Friday, October 30. This is an opportunity for the children to dress up and there are some really fun activities planned.

We will also be having Trunk or Treat on October 31st, Halloween. If you haven’t participated in the past you are really missing out. We decorate our vehicles and ourselves and hand out candy to the Wonder Window children and kids from the neighborhood. It’s from 6-8 p.m. and it is fun.

Please keep Wonder Window in your prayers. We are looking for teachers and aides to fill several positions. God has blessed us with an increased enrollment. We have

had to turn students away because we don’t have enough staff to handle them. Pray that God will send qualified, Godly people to help our mission grow.

Tim Hartnett, WW School Board

Properties Board Don Votaw, Communications

Thank you everyone, who takes the time to

serve the Lord by working on the house He lets us use. Let’s continue to pray for a pastor to be chosen, that the process will go smooth and fast. That with his guidance, we’ll pick the right person to lead us.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 12th, at 7:00 p.m. and our next work day will be Saturday, October 24th, at 7:30 a.m.

You are always welcome to come to the meetings. You are especially welcome to come out on our work days. Thank you everyone.

God’s Blessings to all, Properties Board

When a shoebox is assembled for Operation Christmas Child, the first thing to go into it is love and prayer. Decide if it will be for a boy or a girl, the age range, if you’d like to put it in a cardboard or plastic box, if it will be lined, and then wrap it. Then you are ready to fill it. For older kids, recommended items include tools, sewing kits, fabric squares, deflated balls with a pump and needle, solar calculators, deodorant and jewelry. Younger kids might like blankets, stickers, picture books, finger puppets and blocks. Other suggested items are dolls, balls, cars, small puzzles, jump ropes, crayons, hard candy (that won’t melt in shipping), coloring books, pencils, toothbrush and toothpaste, combs, bar soap, socks, flip flops and sunglasses. You may want to also include a family photo so the child knows who sent them this gift box. Please do not include liquids, war-related items, food, balloons, chocolate, breakables, aerosols, or vitamins.

You’re invited to the shoebox party on November 8th at 1:30 p.m. in the Library. We usually go to lunch (Dutch treat) before assembling the boxes. As you purchase items for the shoeboxes, please add them to the barrel in the narthex.

Blessings, Heidi Frye

CHILDREN’S CENTER

Ms. Charla Herider

Director

Dear Wonder Window and LCoP family,

Hooray, it’s fall, my favorite season. The cooler air after a hot summer is so refreshing. The shorter days are coming, leaving long cozy evenings and darker nights. The crockpot is ready to be brought out for hot casseroles and my soup recipes are waiting to be made. During this time of year, our wonderful cooks begin to make us warm casseroles and we add oatmeal and cream of wheat back to the Wonder Window menu. Please remember that the mornings are getting much cooler and send your child with a light jacket or sweater for our morning recess.

I would like to thank all of the members of Lutheran Church of Prayer who helped us with our “Fishers of Men” drive. Because of your generous spirits, we have plenty of tissue, glue sticks, antibacterial wipes and playdough to get us through the end of the year. Cleaning wipes are always appreciated as we strive to keep the germs at bay. “Tissue season” is coming up shortly and we appreciate the stock we now have on hand. You’d be amazed at how quickly we can go through these items.

Picture Day is coming up soon. On Wednesday, October 7th, Lil’ Angels will be here to take individual

portraits of your child. You will then choose what package you would like to purchase. All checks should be made payable to Lil’ Angels. You will have about a week to decide and then return your picture envelope. We have worked with Lil’ Angels for years and are always pleased with their work. We hope you will be as well.

We will have one more Fundraiser this school year. Popcorn Palace, a yummy flavored gourmet popcorn, was such a hit last time we have decided to implement their services once again. Sales will begin on Monday, October 26th and run through Monday, November 9th. Once all orders are compiled, we will place one giant order. It will arrive in plenty of time for holiday gift giving. I highly recommend the Peanut Butter Drizzled popcorn. It’s amazing!

On Friday, October 30th, Wonder Window will be holding a Western Round Up. We will have a petting zoo and pony rides for the children as well as games and prizes for them to play and win. This is a time of fun and allows the children to dress up in their cutest western wear. Jeans, kerchiefs, cowboy hats, boots, and badges are all appropriate. Please do not send your child in sandals as there could be “pony presents” to step in, though we will make every effort to clean these as they occur.

We will be asking for small donations of toys, candy and parent volunteers so be sure to watch for the sign-up sheets later in the month. You are welcome to attend with your children as they enjoy having you here. This event will run from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 10:45 a.m. Sadly, due to licensing regulations, no younger brothers or sisters can attend this event. Be sure your child has a change of clothes for afterwards.

This month our curriculum themes are going to be Fire Prevention and Safety, Autumn Changes, Bugs and Food and Harvest. We will look for the little changes that come our way during the fall, subtle color shifts, chilly mornings and changes to the amount of light in the evenings. We will look for bugs, and taste new fruits and vegetables. It’s always fun to try new things. Our Chapel themes this month are as follows: Crossing the Red Sea, Traveling in the Desert, The Giving of the Law, and The Battle of Jericho. Memory verses for the 3’s and Pre-K classes will be available on the cubby tops on Mondays. You can also look on our Facebook page on Fridays to get a “head start” on the week.

This year, the Bakersfield City School District and its schools, will be closed the entire week of Thanksgiving. We will be sending a note in early November to find out if your child will be attending Wonder Window during the holiday season. Please be sure to respond so that we can properly staff during that time. Another note will follow in December for the Christmas season. I thank you in advance for turning these items in promptly.

Lutheran Church of Prayer will be hosting Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 31st from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

You and your family are invited to dress up in costume and bring your “little characters” on down for this event. Every year there are great displays out of member’s trunks…you never know what you’ll see. We’ve had everything from Charlie Brown’s Pumpkin Patch to the Duck Dynasty family with everything in between.

Come on down and see the creative side of our church and its members. Hot dogs and nachos will be available for purchase too!

Miss Vanessa’s 2’s Class

Hello everyone! It’s hard to believe that fall is upon us. The 2’s have been eager learning their letters, numbers, colors and shapes. They also enjoy learning a new Bible story every week.

This month the children will be introduced to the letters D, E and F. The numbers will be 4, 5 and 6 and the colors will be orange and black. Our shape will be a square.

Our Western Round-Up will be Friday, October 30th at 9:00 a.m. I will be putting out a list soon. We would appreciate your help in bringing in some of the items listed as well as parent volunteers. May the peace of God be with you!

Miss Rachel’s 3’s Class Hello! Can you believe that fall is

here? We’re looking forward to cool weather and saying, “Goodbye!” to the heat.

Our class has been busy learning. We’re working with our numbers and alphabet. Making art projects with colors and shapes and doing well reciting our memory verses.

I want to thank everyone who attended our Open House and making it a big success!

Please be safe and have a glorious October.

May God bless each of you.

Miss Stephanie’s Pre-K Class Happy October to all of my

families. My class has been working so hard and learning more each day.

This month, the class will be discussing how the weather and the tress change with the fall season.

This year, we will be hosting a Western Round Up on Friday, October 30th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Your child can simply wear jeans and a kerchief or you can go “all out” with your Western costume. As a surprise to the children, we will have a petting zoo and pony rides. Please have a change of clothing for them to change into after the carnival is over. We will have sign-up sheets for small toys, candy and volunteer positions. Please try and sign up for one.

During this month, our phonic sounds will be C, K, E and H. Our colors are orange and black and our numbers are 6-8. Please continue to review all work at home. This helps reinforce what we’re learning in class.

Finally, we would like to wish two of our classmates a Happy 4th Birthday. Happy Birthday to Alessandro on October 7th and to Ava on the 22nd.

Have a blessed month!

Mr. Jacob’s School-Age Class In October we will be shining

with the light of Jesus. We will be doing art crafts to go along with the themes of Fire Prevention, Autumn Changes and some “spooky” crafts.

We also want to wish a Happy Birthday to the following three classmates, Madison, Makayla and Kate.

The School age is also wondering if anyone has a television they are no longer using. If so, we would happily accept it and Ms. Charla would be glad to write you a receipt for your taxes. Thank you.

We hope you all have a safe and fun Halloween!!

God bless you all!
