Times of Transition At the January stated meeting of the session, I shared with them my desire to retire as your pastor, effective April 30 of this year. Since then so many of you have shared your hearty congratulations! You know what the retired life is like and you understand the
reasons Phil and I have decided to join that blissful state. Since I will be with you through the month of April, there is still time for me to share reflections on our journey together and to thank you for what you mean to me. But I’m guessing there are other questions on your might right now, particularly ones related to what comes next in the area of pastoral leadership.
Presbyterians choose their own pastors, but they work in conjunction with the presbytery as they do. Gordon Raynal and Debbie Foster, general presbyters for Foothills Presbytery, will be meeting with our session on February 5 to discuss the process of working on the upcoming pastoral transition. They will share suggestions for pastoral leadership in the interim period. It will be the responsibility of the session to make decisions related to that time period.
Don’t be confused if you hear the term “stated supply pastor.” Our presbytery prefers that term for a pastor serving a congregation during the interim between “installed” pastors (the term we use for pastors who have been installed in their position for an indefinite period of time). The term “interim pastor” is usually reserved for a pastor serving a congregation needing to take an extended period of time between installed pastors in order to resolve issues or concerns. That is not Seneca Presbyterian.
The decision for calling a new installed pastor rests with the congregation. That process begins with the Congregational Nominating Committee as they nominate persons to comprise the Pastor Nominating Committee. These names will be presented to the congregation for approval at a congregational meeting. The PNC then works to seek and find the person God has chosen to lead SPC.
There is no way to predict how quickly this process can occur. It certainly is longer than hiring a new employee. But the work of the church does not stop even between pastors. Your session will make certain that pastoral needs are met, as well as continuing to lead the congregation in “being the church” fully and completely. And your work as members of this fine family of faith will continue as well. I know God will bless you in this time of “new beginnings.”
The Lenten Season Lent and Easter are accommodating themselves to the secular calendar this year. Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day and Easter falls on April Fool’s Day. The schedule for our ecumenical series of Lenten worship services and lunches can be found in this Presby Press. Note that we host the community on February 21. We will publish the schedule for Holy Week services in the March Presby Press. These are held at our sister Presbyterian congregations in Oconee County. All represent rich opportunities for worship during a season of self-examination in anticipation of the glorious Good News of Easter Sunday.
The Brown Bag & Bible study group will host a Lenten study for this season. They invite you to consider joining them. In conjunction with my preaching from the Gospel of Mark, I will lead a study of “the last week” in the life of Jesus as seen in that Gospel. We will use as a study resource the book entitled The Last Week: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’ Final Days in Jerusalem by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. We may not always agree with these authors, but that just adds to the learning process. Our primary text will be the Bible. Scripture lessons for each session are listed in this Presby Press. Since there are eight days between Palm Sunday and Easter, this series will contain eight sessions beginning on February 1 and continuing through March 22. Half of the Gospel of Mark is devoted to Holy Week, yet we rarely get a chance to experience completely that part of the story. Join us for a lively and open conversation as we try to do just that. BB&B meets on Thursdays at noon in the Sara Davis Stribling classroom (the room just past the church office). Please bring lunch with you if you wish. Many do!

Window on the Session The Session met on December 12 at 6:00. Nancy Morris called the meeting to order and opened with a prayer. Donna Beebe provided the devotion and a prayer. The room was full of currently serving elders, newly—elected elders and deacons to be examined, our pastor and Session clerk. The newly—elected elders and deacons to be installed as the class of 2020 who were present shared their spiritual faith journeys. Each was a personal reflection of how the Lord led them to have this opportunity to serve as an elder or deacon at Seneca Presbyterian Church. Installation and the ordination of Class of 2020 deacons and elders is scheduled for January 7th. Diana Owens, deacon—elect, was unable to attend the Session meeting; however, a time of examination was scheduled prior to her installation on January 28th. Nancy Morris and the Session expressed gratitude to the Session members
rotating off the Session. Plans to collect special offerings on Christmas Eve for OPSF and to designate the Souper
Bowl offering on February 4 for the School Backpack Program were reported. The Missions/Community Care and Outreach Committees will merge into one committee.
The motion to have the one committee, Mission and Outreach, was approved by the session. Barbara Davenport was re-elected Treasurer for 2018. Helen Kelly was re-elected Stated
Clerk for 2018. Their good service will continue for another year. A shortfall of contributions was reported by the Treasurer which was a concern to all. A
motion to send a letter from the Session notifying the Congregation of the shortfall was approved. Meeting was adjourned with a closing prayer.

Mission Trip Exploration – There is an exciting possibility
for members and friends of this congregation to engage in a Mission Trip next fall to help people recovering from natural disaster. Sunday, February 11th, immediately after the 11:00 a.m. worship service, there will be a brief meeting to hear about the exciting possibility of such a Mission Trip in the fall. This is for any members and friends of this congregation. At this brief meeting, we will present an overview of the
planned trip: background of the situation, who we are working through, where we will go, who we will help, travel plans, costs, etc. No commitments will be asked at this meeting. Come, hear more and see if this is a possible opportunity for you to serve along with others from this congregation to help those still seeking to recover from a natural disaster. Those persons interested will be involved in pinning down the exact dates we go. We will meet in the Church Library across from the office as soon as worship is over. For those attending the 9:00 a.m. service, we encourage you to come back if you can. If you want more information before the meeting or if you cannot come to the meeting, see or contact Richard or Susan Caldwell.

Ninth Annual SPC Women's Retreat The Rev. Pressley Cox
Our ninth annual retreat will again be held at Asbury Hills Retreat Center in Cleveland, SC on March 16 and 17, 2018. We will gather in the late afternoon on Friday and spend 24 hours together, then return home, refreshed and renewed, on Saturday afternoon. The cost is $100, which includes overnight accommodations, including bedding and towels, and 3 meals - dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday. The price also includes an honorarium for our leader, Rev. Pressley Cox. If cost is an issue, full or partial scholarships are available.
Please fill out the form below and return to the church with your check for $100 made out to Seneca Presbyterian Church with "Women's Retreat" on the memo line. Registration is limited to 27 women, with preference to Seneca Presbyterian women. Registration will be opened to those outside SPC if spaces are unfilled after February 1.
Please indicate which cabin you prefer. Batson is larger and closer to the Dining Hall. Creekside is smaller and a little bit farther to the Dining Hall. All rooms offer individual beds and a private bath. There is a single room available (in Creekside), 4 rooms that sleep 3 people, and the others are doubles. If you have roommate preferences, please also indicate that.

We harvested 12 bags of the beautiful tender sweet lettuce from the garden before the low temperatures this week. The Little Green Thumb gardeners took home lettuce for their families, and were so excited!

Days for Girls Reaches Goal of 1,000,000
As the end of 2017 approached, Days for Girls International made a world - wide effort to reach the goal of
putting a sustainable menstrual hygiene kit into the hands of the 1 millionth girl/woman. And guess what?
That goal was achieved!! In fact, they reported in early January that they have now reached 1,043,000
women and girls with kits and education about this natural process that every woman experiences. And they
are developing micro - enterprises in several countries where women are now sewing and providing these
items to their communities where disposables are not available or practical.
The founder of the organization recently wrote to the many volunteers:
“It wasn't so long ago that people questioned whether an organization dedicated to accessible and
sustainable menstrual hygiene management (MHM) was even needed. As Days for Girls looks ahead
to its 10th birthday this fall, your commitment, voices, and impact have shown the world that our
movement matters because dignity, health, and opportunity matter. Here's to you all, our
Champions of Days for Girls, and to the power of what we can do together in the years to come.”
Seneca SC Team began to be organized in March of 2015 and was officially certified the following June. Since
that time our list of volunteers has grown from 10 to 23 and we have produced 1376 shields (with moisture
barrier), 4291 washable flannel liners, and 843 drawstring bags that are used to hold the kit items for
distribution. As of the end of 2017, we have received financial donations and grants totaling $4,568, have
purchased or had donated to us $3,768 worth of fabric and supplies, and spent $322 on postage to deliver
our components to the Atlanta Chapter where they are put together with the remaining items that are
included in the kits.
We continue to meet for 4 hours on the 2nd Wednesday of the month with an average of 10 - 12 enthusiastic
participants. We look forward to adding more volunteers and producing more components this coming year.

If you would like to provide flowers for the sanctuary during 2018, please sign on the chosen date. Please remember, instead of fresh flowers you can make a donation to your favorite fund or charity. If you make any changes in the book, please let the office know about it. There is a link to order your flowers from Heartwarmers, the florist the church uses.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper—February 13th Pancake Day signals the onset of the Lenten Season. Join us at 5:30 p.m. for this centuries-old tradition of making and eating pancakes on the day before Ash Wednesday. Historically, this is a day to load up on carbs and fat before the 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter. The term “shrove” comes from the old English verb “shrive” meaning “confessing all sins”. Come splurge a little by joining in this tradition before entering into the coming season of reflection and repentance. (Please sign up by Mon a.m. Feb 12th.)

Spring Trip to Thornwell Being Planned! You have heard about Thornwell Home for Children and the life changing nurturing, love and care provided there. You have generously donated to Thornwell in our Thanksgiving offering. Now you have the opportunity to see and experience this significant ministry to families and children!
Your Mission and Outreach Committee is planning a trip to Thornwell, Saturday, April 21st (a couple of weeks after Easter). We will travel together by van to Clinton, SC to see the historic Thornwell campus, visit one of the family cottages, and meet children
and staff. The guided tour will be followed by a simple catered lunch and time for questions. Before leaving Clinton, we will take a quick van tour of Presbyterian College, just a block away! Your only cost is for the lunch, but reservations are limited.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GOPHERS!! This dedicated group of volunteers answered 49 calls for
transportation for a total of 1,181 miles driven in 2017. Since its inception on May 23, 1996, the gophers have answered 1,989 calls for a total of 88,649 miles driven!!!! Those who volunteered this year were Mark and Barbara Davenport, Cecil Rigby, Pam Headapohl, Jan Crismore, Jerry Crabtree, Carolyn Maddox, Gene Goodwyn, and Ann Smith. Twenty years ago we transported a young woman to cancer treatments, and every time she meets Jerry she reminds him what a blessing the gophers were in her life. Please consider being a part of this vital mission project - we always need fresh faces!!!!

Souper Bowl Sunday
February 4th is Super Bowl Sunday, but it is also Souper Bowl Sunday, a collection taken to fight hunger and poverty. Souper Bowl Sunday began with a youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC in 1990, and SPC has been participating for several years.
We will be collecting donations for the Oconee County Back Pack program this year. There are over 500 students in our county that would be without food over the weekend without this program. The cost of a backpack for a child for a year is $160; we have chosen to sponsor 6 children, so our goal is $960.
Help us reach our goal of providing food security for our local children. There will be soup pots available for donations at the end of both services! Thanks in advance for your generosity!
Chellye and Don Pomeroy relocated to the area 1 1/2 years ago after living in Atlanta for 30 years. They have two children - son, Weston and daughter, Vanessa. Wes, wife Sarah, and 22 month old son, Ezra live in the Atlanta area. Vanessa, husband Lucas, and 22 month old daughter, Grace live in Greenville (toddlers are 10 days apart). Chellye retired
from the Fulton County School System in 2015 after 21 years as a School Technology Specialist. Don retired from Macy's Technology in 2013.
While in Atlanta, Don and Chellye attended Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church for 30 years. Don taught 3rd grade Sunday School for 18 years. Chellye and Don both worked with Vacation Bible School, belonged to the same Sunday School Class for many years and participated in the same Life Group (Bible Study) for 23 years.
Don enjoys reading, tennis, volunteer work and is a member of the Salem Lion's Club. Chellye enjoys gardening and volunteer work and both enjoy travel and helping with their 2 grandchildren. They currently live in Keowee Key, 12 Maritime Drive, Salem, SC 29676.

With Easter coming on April 1st, Ash Wednesday and Lent will be upon us
very soon. Below is a listing of this year’s Lenten lunches and opportunities for
worship with our sister congregations in Seneca. For those new to the
tradition, worship begins at noon at each church followed by a lunch provided
free of charge by that congregation. Please mark your calendars and join in
this outstanding opportunity. It is a great way to worship in different styles
and with many faces that we look forward to seeing each Lent. You can always count on finding many
familiar Seneca Presbyterian faces in the crowd, too!

SPC Christmas Floral Fund 2017
$880.00 was donated to the Christmas Floral Fund. Joanna Redick and my floral expenses were $183.86. Thanks to your generosity, Oconee Presbyterian Service Fund will receive $696.14.0
Emily and Jerry Land and I are retiring from decorating the church at Christmas and designing the Advent floral arrangements. We have enjoyed serving in this capacity for many years, but it is time to transfer this to someone else. We are fortunate that Joanna Redick will assume this role.
One may still make a donation in honor or in memory of someone to the Christmas Floral Fund next year. Please note that Joanna Redick will be designing the arrangements, so one will need to coordinate the respective Advent Sunday flowers with her.

Missions/Outreach collecting donations for the Homeless
With so many cold nights, it is a more difficult winter than usual for the homeless in our community. There is great need for socks, cold medicine, scarves, gloves, and blankets to help keep bodies warm and healthy. Any donations of any size would be greatly appreciated. Please bring them to the church and place them in the bin available in Knohl Hall. All donations will be given to Our Daily Rest for distribution to their clients and to those in need who stop by requesting these items.

Once again, dear church family, I am compelled to come to you with thanksgiving and
humility for all of your kindness during my recent setback. In my advancing age(!!!!), I
am finally learning to accept with grace your outpouring of love through prayers,
visits, cards, rides all over town, and enough food to feed an army. (It was delicious!) I
am especially grateful to God and to you that there will be no surgery in my immediate
future, because I know it is the power of prayer that has brought me this far in the
healing process. Please know that I hold a very special place in my heart for each and
every one of you! Love Ann

Ripple of One needs volunteers on Tuesdays from 5:30p.m. - 6:45p.m. and the 3rd Thursday of every month from 5:45p.m. – 8:15p.m. Volunteer applications are at the church office. Please stop by and pick up one.
Carolyn Maddox served a delicious dinner and gave gifts to our clients. We gave our clients personalized calendars to intentionally approach the new year with organization, structure, and preparedness! After dinner, Megan Sanders, our Well director, led an inspirational and very real conversation. Her theme was about the relationship between incomes and outcomes. We must be truly devoted to our relationship with God to feed our soul. Just like a plant in a shallow hole will grow crooked, we must dig deep in our relationship with our Father to have a foundation to
grow tall and strong. If we nurture bitterness and unforgiveness, we cannot expect different outcomes. That which feels good in the moment, is probably not good for growth. We discussed the difference between punishment and discipline. Our current behaviors of discipline are preparing a path of freedom!
Meanwhile, our children had a jam-packed Well. The toddlers enjoyed a Christmas party - crafts, food, and pajamas donated by two volunteers, Teri and Madison! The elementary kids exercised for ‘Free Book’ coupons. They were able to go shopping in the newly—innovated store! One 8-year old client said, “I don’t need to go shopping for myself because I have everything I need and Christmas is coming. But I want to get something for my mom because I love her and she’s working really hard for me.” I can’t make this stuff up!
The next station was to wrap those gifts. This is a really impactful activity for single-parent households in poverty. There isn’t another parent to take the children shopping for a gift for mom. They were so empowered to spend their hard-earned Ripple bucks on a bracelet for their mom and then they were thrilled to be able to wrap it before she could see it!
The final station was planting bulbs in pots, generously donated by the Seneca Presbyterian Garden Committee. Susan and Richard are so wonderful for the Lil’ Ripplers. THANK YOU for facilitating those experiences.

So men keep your mind alert and aware.

As we enter the winter months, here’s a reminder for Sundays with snow. Check WYFF for closing information. We will post our information at that station ONLY. We will also post any changes on the website, so you can check www.sprez.org. We try to make those decisions by Saturday evening, if possible. And let’s be grateful for the faithful
volunteers who will shovel snow and clear pathways at the church for the rest of us!
