P A G E 2

Dear Friends,

I didn’t win the $500,000,000 lottery, and I suppose it is just as well. It might taint my other treasure, a treasure I value more than all the money in the lottery. More than anything else I treasure the saints I’ve had the good fortune of meeting and with whom I’ve spent some time.

One of the things that amazes me about these saints is just how diverse they are. They are all ages, sizes, and shapes. Some were lapsed Christians who were turned off by the hypocrisy and pettiness of institutional religion. We commiserated. One described himself as a “damn poor Lutheran,” and he was, but he’d give you the shirt off his back and a back to go with it if you needed it. Some were pillars of strength and faithfulness within their churches and communities. Some were unsung heroes, who quietly went around doing the work of the church, on their own trimming bushes when needed, setting up chairs, turning on lights, getting the church building ready for events, making meals, or on their own taking on a ministry of visitation. Some went out of their way to be welcoming. Some are here in Danville, but not all of them. There are saints in other places. Some fill the more traditional profile of church leaders. Some have gone on to the church triumphant and some still are doing the work of Christ. Oh, they might not know that is what they’re doing, but it is, and they’ve enriched my life more than any lottery could ever hope to do.

I think of these saints when I think about Jesus being Emmanuel, God with us. Rightly or wrongly, Christmas is a big deal. Billions of dollars are spent on Christmas, on gifts, on decorations, on preparing special meals, on travel, on church programs, on Christmas concerts and other observations. Think of all the preparation it took the city of Danville to get ready for the Vice-Presidential Debate. Now, think of what we’d do if we knew that the King of kings was coming. There wouldn’t be any comparison. It would probably be ten times as big of an event, or maybe bigger. We’d roll out the red carpet and the preparation work for the debate would pale in comparison. Can you imagine the security? We had several hundred Secret Service agents and state and local police officers that oversaw security at the debate. I suspect Jesus would have a pretty good security detail because no one would want the same thing to happen to him again that happened the first time. Only a select few, mostly those who made large donations, were able to actually attend the debate. Getting a ticket to see the King of kings might be even harder, so that only a select few would be able to get anywhere near to Jesus. Yet, when we read the story, we read about a baby born in a manger to an unwed, teenage mother. Jesus isn’t just the mes-siah of the elite. Jesus is the messiah for all the saints, for all the Marthas out there that prepare all the church meals, for all the Marys who go to the Bible studies and women’s groups, for all the Zaccheuses out there that have lived less than noble lives, but who are looking for something better, something real. This is the Emmanuel who joins the men for coffee as they sit around a table and rehash the latest game, for where ever two or three are gathered there is he in the midst of them. This God with us who went fishing with his friends. I doubt he’d be a red-carpeted kind of guy. He associated with the lowly. Maybe he shows up in our all-out Christmas celebrations, but I tend to think that he’s back in the kitchen with the workers, or mingling with people during the fellowship hour, or stopping by patients rooms and the nurses’ desk in the hospital, or with the workers in nursing homes and care facilities. God with us, means exactly that. Jesus comes to live with us where we live, and where most of us live is in everyday living. We fix meals and do the clean up. We get tired and stressed and worry. We’re far from perfect. The same is true of all those saints I treasure. They reflect the spirit of the Christ child.

May you see the Christ child reflected in the faces of the saints you meet as you ring the bell for Salvation Army and in the faces of the saints who quietly go about their business, who set before us an example of faithfulness.

Blessings to all of you.

Grace & peace,

Jim

Time to bake Christmas Cookies for the prisoners

at the Boyle County Detention Center! 300 prisoners x 4 cookies each = 1,200 cookies needed

Two ways you can help:

Bake your cookies at home and bring several dozen HOMEMADE cookies to fellowship hall by Saturday, December 8.

Join us in the church kitchen on Saturday, December 8 (Noon-2:00 p.m.) for cookie-baking fun. Bring your favorite cookie dough and we’ll bake the cookies in the church ovens.

Children and decorating sprinkles welcome!

Remember:

The cookies must be HOMEMADE, but any recipe is fine.

The less breakable, the better.

Calling all Christmas Cookie bakers!

We’ll be bagging the cookies on

Sunday morning, December 9

during the Christmas Gift Market.

Helpers sample the broken bits!

NO CHRISTMAS SPIRIT? “Can you believe the Johnsons already have their tree up?” he said. “And those people across the street have completely covered their door with foil wrapping paper and fastened it with duct tape. How tacky is that? And to top it all off, a little girl pulling a wagon nearly knocked me down at Wall-mart. Every charity wants my money, and I don’t have any money. When did we forget the real meaning of Christmas, the humble, simplicity of the season?” When indeed? We all know the true spirit of Christmas is the spirit of giving, not the amount of giving, but an expensive gift may be our way of saying: “I’m proud of you. I need you in my life. I love you.” We forget that a generous spirit has very little to do with how much we spend on gifts or how much we give to church and charities. Wasn’t God’s gift of Jesus that first Christmas the greatest generosity of spirit? With Jesus, we received the grace of forgiveness and new life: A star, a manger, a babe---no charge. Where can we show a generosity of spirit without opening our pocket books?

Give compassion to someone who is hurting, even if you can see she’s dug her own hole. Give your time to someone who needs to talk. Look in their eyes and really listen. Give forgiveness to someone who has wronged you remembering that God has forgiven you. Give encouragement to someone who is frustrated and discouraged. A pat on the back says it all. Give a place at your table and share a meal. Thank God before you dig in. The list goes on with a myriad of gifts that only require a willing heart and a generous spirit. If you yourself feel tired and discouraged, find someone who will listen. Pray for faith and for God’s grace in abundance; then, pass it out to everyone you know. Continued on Page 5

Continued from Page 4 No Christmas Spirit?

And speaking of passing it out: Remember that “Soups on Us” needs your help on Dec. 8, at 9:30 AM. We’re not only feeding our hungry neighbors, we’re building a church community. We’re not only showing generous hearts, we’re having fun doing it! We’re not only topping it all off with Christmas cookies, were receiving--- You guessed it--- That good ole Christmas spirit!
