We really do have a cool club. True, who am I to judge since I’m a nerd that rides with a mirror and a big green, goober fanny pack. BUT, we do have a lot of great events coming up so judge for yourself. Let’s start with September. The big news in a couple weeks is the Reading 120 Pro Bike Race that will be taking place on Saturday, Sept 12 th . They do need volunteers so if you are interested, go here: http://reading120.com/volunteers/ . On their website, they have many positions listed that need to be filled so send an email to get on the volunteer list. Plus the BCBC logo will be used by the race for being part of the event. The last week of September is our own Shoo Fly Classic Ride taking place on Saturday the 26 th . This is the club’s one fundraiser for the year so if you’d like to help make the event a success, contact Tom Reppert to volunteer. Send him an email at [email protected] . I believe Tom still needs people for parking and the finish area. Check out the Shoo Fly section in newsletter for more details. But if you would rather ride, that’s great too, the entry form is in the newsletter and on the website. Now, how many times have you heard someone say, “gravel”? Well it’s for good reason as it recently claimed one of our members. He’s okay and is back on the bike but it makes for a good reason to remind everyone that when you see gravel, call it out and just ride straight through it. If it’s on a turn or intersection, you need to ride “straight” through it and then turn the wheel after you are past it. Turning your wheel while in gravel will likely put you on the ground before you even have a chance to say, “Oh Fudge”. Or some other variation of the word. Changing lanes. Doesn’t it drive you crazy when you’re out on the highway and some maniac decides to just change into your lane without looking and almost causes you to crash? Those are the times I wish my car had the Bazooka option. Well, it’s the same thing and even worse on a bike when riding in a group. Not only can you cause a crash, but we don’t have a car’s solid frame wrapped around us for protection. So look before changing lanes and even point if trying to squeeze in somewhere. I had an interesting warm down in the Oley lot the other night with a new member. He said it would be great to have some tips written in the website for newbies to tell us what to do in certain situations like; all of a sudden having a mechanical, dropping a water bottle or how to get better at holding a line and riding in groups. I thought that sounded like a great idea so if anyone has any suggestions on any of these or other types of things that occur on rides, email them to me with how to handle the situation. I will compile everything that is sent so we can add a “Riding safely” tips page on the website. Okay, back to the good stuff. BCBC cycling jerseys are available so if you’d like one, let me know asap so you can still use them while it’s still warm outside. They are $55. I also have long and short sleeve club tech shirts so again, let me know if you want something. I usually have them at the club rides or you can email me at [email protected]. Coming up in October, we have our “Sunset at the Pagoda” for our members. The Sunset Party will be taking place high atop Mt Penn on Saturday, Oct 10th from 7-10pm. Again, check the newsletter for full details but we will have wine, beer, light food and desserts. Only $5 for members and $15 for a guest. So join us for an evening on top of the mountain. Plus, in time for Halloween but for Thanksgiving, it’s BCBC’s second annual Cranksgiving Ride to raise food for the Berks County Food Bank. The date is set for October 31st so mark your calendars and look for details. This year, you can ride in costume while helping the needy and just maybe, if yours is the best costume, you might will an award. However, I wouldn’t suggest a toga or wedding dress because I’d hate to see you getting wrapped up in your spokes. The cool club stuff just keeps coming. In November, we will be having a wallyball/ social night at Colonial Hills Fitness in Sinking Spring on Friday, Nov 20th from 7-10pm. So again, mark your calendar and even if you don’t want to play, just come to eat and drink some good beverages. Best of all, it’s only $5 a person for club members. Our next club meeting will be Monday, Sept 14th at the Red Covered Bridge Park down the road from Grings Mill. But just in case the pavilion is being used, bring a lawn chair. The meeting starts at 7 and goes about an hour. All are welcome. If you have ideas or thoughts, please come share them so we can keep striving to make BCBC a better club. Summer is winding down but there’s lots of riding to be done before the cold days of winter get here so what are you doing reading this rambling article, get out there and ride. Butch Ulrich

Seasoned Spokes outings are group rides of roughly 20 miles and take about 2 hours to complete. Some of the rides have a pre-post ride option that adds an extra 10 to 20 miles. These pre-post ride options are announced by email each week. Rides are rated 1, 2 or 3 with 3 being the hilliest and most difficult. Lunches are scheduled after some of the rides during the warmer months. Many of the riders are over 55, however anyone is welcome to participate. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time with a bicycle in good condition, a bicycle helmet and anything you need to repair a flat tire.

For additional Seasoned Spokes information contact David Cruzan, 610-376-5048; [email protected]

Second Number: Total Mileage for ride Please note the Club policy on protective headgear: ALL Riders must wear Snell/ANSI rated helmets. Ride Host/Hostess will NOT give cue sheets to riders without helmets and that rider will not be considered an official participant of the Club ride. Please have your bike in proper working order BEFORE the start of ride. Arrive 10-15 minutes before start time so that all rides leave on time. Make sure you have a spare tube or patch kit and at least one water bottle. If weather conditions are questionable, the ride host may notify club members by posting a message on Facebook prior to the ride or make a decision at the starting location based on road conditions and weather forecasted at the time of the ride. SPECIAL RIDE DETAILS Special rides during the months will be highlighted in color. If you are hosting a special ride, please contact Newsletter Editor Wendy Davis or Ride Coordinator Alan Fineman before the 18th of each month to tell other club members about it. Did you have a great experience on a ride? Let us know and we’ll add pictures and stories about your ride!

Wednesday, Sept 9th we will be starting at the Blue Marsh Stilling Basin lot on Palisades Rd. We will be parking in the upper lot closest to the road. You will have a choice of either riding the trail through the Gring's Mill area or mountain biking towards the Boat Launch on State Hill Rd. A mountain

bike is required for the mountain bike ride and you can use either a mountain bike or a trail bike for the trail ride. The sun will be setting at 7:25PM so you will have plenty of time to trail ride to Stone Cliff or to mountain bike to the boat launch area. If you plan to go farther than the State Hill boat launch, please bring a light. If you have never ridden at Blue Marsh in the dark with a light, you are in for a fun filled adventure!!

MATT’S ADVENTURE RIDES Sept 19

Hershey Park Start at Wilson High School 100 miles 5100 ft of climbing

The Sept Matt’s adventure ride will be the annual trip to Hershey & Chocolate World. The ride starts at Wilson High school & travels thru Charming Forge and the north side of Lebanon County on roads north of Rt 422. This out bound leg is mostly rolling hills. There is a stop at mile 25. A longer lunch stop will be at Chocolate World coming at mile 52.From Hershey the ride heads back on the flatter roads on the south side of Route 422. A final stop is at mile 75 in Richland. Generally a tailwind prevails along the return leg. This is a great choice for club members looking to do their first century ride.

No weekend trail ride for September

Oct 25 Northwest Berks Ramble 8 AM Conrad Weiser East Elementary 69 miles 3400 ft climbing The last adventure ride of the season will take us from Wernersville to the base of the Blue Mountains on rolling terrain. The ride goes thru Bethel then will head east using quiet roads at the base of the hills. The mid ride stop, at mile 34 will be in Shartlesville. Then the ride heads towards Centerport and towards the hill at Blue Marsh Lake. Save something for the climb up Reber’s Bridge Rd as we head back to the start at Conrad Weiser. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6814833

Club ride from Brecknock Saturday July 25th Some of the riders who did the long ride came across a road where the bridge was out. Literally the bridge was out! So they walked across the dam breast. Everyone made it safely across.

Sunday, October 18th Lehigh Gorge Rail-Trail

46 miles 8:30 am Meet at North Reading Plaza, Rt. 222 Temple (behind McDonalds) Join us on this beautiful ride from Jim Thorpe to White Haven and back. Trail length is 23 miles one way, with a crushed gravel surface. We will eat lunch in White Haven. Ride hosts are Laurie & Rusty

So, why did the chicken cross the road? On the Wednesday August 19th Thun Trail ride as they were heading back Ann Rollman, Kurt Bauder and Wendy Davis came across this chicken on Old River Bridge Road. Wendy stopped to take its picture. It wasn’t afraid of her. She even gave it a little push in the right direction to get it off the road.

More Details in October newsletter!

On a recent Tuesday night ride our group headed down Oley Line Rd. Many of us went into the turn at the bottom, across the cut out section of macadam. At the Oley Line Ditch the stones had been depleted with time. I approached hearing a hissing as someone's tire hit the section. Yes a flat ... next my front tire hits the edge and there was an ever so slight thumping coming from the front wheel as I proceeded past now with extra caution. At that moment, I wasn't sure if the tire was okay or not. Many thanks to Erik Leeds and Dave Richards who waited as we checked things out and decided it was okay to ride. Additional thanks to Butch Ulrich who went back and picked up my water bottle that had somehow managed its way out of its cage. Dave, Eric and I finished the ride together and picked up some others along the way. My Knights On Wheels for that Tuesday night ride. It was very much appreciated ... true gentlemen, thank you! - Michelle Ulrich

The following is a new section of the newsletter. We are calling it “Know What Puts My Wheel Out of True”. This is the place to mention any pet peeves you have about bike riding. NO names will be mentioned. We will have a few each month. Email your peeve to Wendy Davis or Butch Ulrich. Deadline is the 20th of the month for the next newsletter.

Rambling Rides

1. These group rides are for riders looking for longer distance riding. 2. Rides start around 40-50 miles in spring, and ramp up to 60+ miles during

the summer and fall. 3. Rides are currently scheduled for 1 ride per weekend and are posted in the BCBC newsletter with the other rides. 4. Although no one will be left behind on these rides, it is important that riders have the ability to do longer rides (no sag wagon support). 5. Please bring enough food, water, and money (rest stops are usually every 20-30 miles).

♦ Your group is riding single file on the far right side of the road when a car passes you and the driver feels like they have to lay on their horn the whole time they are passing everyone in the group! What is up with that??? (yes I waved with all 5 fingers, but I really didn’t want to!)

2105 Lehigh Wheelmen Donut Derby The Lehigh Wheelmen invite you to participate in the 2015 Donut Derby on Labor Day, September 7th. The DD is a fun 36 mile race with a twist: Get a 3 minute time credit for each donut eaten at stops positioned at mile markers 12 and 24. Donut-adjusted time determines the winner in several age categories. The race starts at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, Trexlertown at 9:00am. Lunch and an award ceremony follow the ride. Register at www.bikereg.com/lwa-donut-derby. Cost of the ride is $25 and the registration deadline is August 31st or when event fills. No registrations on day of event.

2015 Lehigh Wheelmen Gap Gallop The Lehigh Wheelmen invite you to participate in the 2015 Gap Gallop on September 20th. The Gap Gallop century route takes you from DeSales University on scenic low traffic roads along the Delaware River to Portland, PA and back with an optional climb of the notorious Fiddler’s Elbow. There are multiple routes (33, 50, 70, 83, and 103 miles) for all. A delicious post-ride meal will be offered at the DeSales finish. Preregistrations only at www.bikereg.com/lwa-gap-gallop. 7:00 am start $35-$40 $10 for post-ride meal

Great rest stop! Saturday August 22 some of us did a renegade ride from Fleetwood. While doing this new ride which we will be doing on September 6th for the Rambling Ride, our group stopped at the Shell mini mart on the corner of Main and E. Penn Ave in Alburtis. They have great home made Tandy Takes, banana cake and other goodies that they sell at the register. Bill didn’t have his money on him so Wendy gave him some for the banana cake. The gal gave Wendy a free Tandy Take. Wendy and Bill both shared some of their food with Ann, Dan and Cheryl. It was very good. So if you ever go by there stop in. They have bathrooms, other food and drinks.

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club is pleased to present our 2015 annual "century" bicycle ride, the Three Creek Century on

Sunday, September 20, 2015. This is not a race but rather a leisurely ride through the scenic Cumberland Valley of central Pennsylvania. Ride on lightly traveled roads along and over the Conodoguinet, Yellow Breeches and Big Spring creeks which feed the

Susquehanna river. Cue sheets, sag wagons and rest stops are provided for all routes as well as markings on the road to guide the riders on the routes. This event is well known for its homemade cookies, soup and other great food.

Most of the routes offer gentle terrain, although one of the 25 mile routes contains some challenging hills. Routes of 100, 75,50, and 25-mile lengths are available.

The 2015 Three Creek Century will be held at the Penn Township Fire Department complex at 1730 Pine Road in Newville. This new location offers better restrooms, parking and picnic facilities, and great access to the quiet rural roads that wind through beautiful western Cumberland County. The revised routes retain the favorite parts of the courses from previous Three Creek Centuries while adding new scenery that showcases some of the best riding to be found in the region.

NEW! Cumberland Valley Rail Trail Route: A ride along the beautiful Cumberland Valley Rail Trail is being offered as an option for riders looking for a quiet no-traffic ride. The trail is a crushed limestone surface suitable for most types of bikes. Ride from Newville to Shippensburg Township Park and back for a total of 18 miles. Start at the Newville trailhead at 23 McFarland Street.
