Wonka and the Choco-late Factory when youfirst saw it? Do you loveto watch it again andagain?I have always loved

chocolate, especiallyaround the holidays. Inthe quaint town ofBangor, PA sits ahistoric chocolatefactory that creates themost delicate delights

promptly and consis-tently. Chocolates onBroadway is located at60 Broadway in

Bangor, has been theresince 1906 and is theforth family to own andoperate it. The retailshop is on the streetlevel floor but under-neath, in the basementlevel, is where the little

elves make theirmarvels. The under-ground factory, which

produces approximately500 to 600 pounds ofcandy daily, is completewith giant chocolatemixers, heat lamps,candy molds and myfavorite, the conveyor

belt. The conveyor is

roughly 30 feet longwith six inch windowsto peek inside at thechocolates and candy asthey roll by on their wayto the boxing station.Also inside theconveyor, is a chocolatewaterfall that drenches

all the to be covered"treats with a bountifullayer of their specialchocolate. All the candyrecipes are secret familyrecipes written on little

pieces of paper, put in a book and never shownto anyone. Theiremployees are deeplytrusted and loyal,making the shop a truegem. It was a pleasure tosee the chocolates

placed in their boxesand loaded onto theconveyor by humanhands; by workers who

have actually beendoing this for 30 years.It is refreshing to seethis, especially in the eraof automation, and itmakes this shop standout.This business has been

a candy shop for 105years, and the Bussen-ger family of Bangor

has owned it since 1978.The founder, AnthonyAleveras, came to NewYork City from Greeceto see S. Whitman, thefounder of WhitmanChocolates and MiltonHershey, founder ofHershey Chocolates. Heobtained financial back-ing from them andcarved out his store inBangor on the advice of

both men. Most of theoriginal decor isevident. Not visible tothe public presently, are

the wall to wall oil paintings done by anItalian artist forAnthony Aleveras. The

paintings still hang onthe walls but arecarefully covered to

protect them.The marble fountain

counter remains as itwas, the gas lights have

been switched toelectric, and the wholefeel of the shop isartisan old-world,

infused with the comfortof the modern age welive in today. Therichness of history thatdrapes this shop canactually be felt whenyou visit this store.When you combine the

is locally owned andoperated, and their age-old recipes are uniquelydelicious, it makes you

batter among preparedpans.

2. Bake 40 to 45 minutesor until toothpick insertedin center comes out clean.Cool in pans 5 minutes.

Remove and coolcompletely on wire rack.

Wrap and store inrefrigerator. Serve with

Orange Butter or Choco-late Hazelnut Spread, if

desired.Makes 4 small loaves

Orange Butter: Beat 1/2cup softened butter in

small bowl with electricmixer at medium speed

until light and fluffy. Beat

in 1 teaspoon gratedorange peel and 1tablespoon orange juice.

Store in refrigerator.Bring to room tempera-

ture before serving. Makes3/4 cup.

Chocolate HazelnutSpread: Grind 1 1/2 cupstoasted hazelnuts and 1/4

teaspoon salt in foodprocessor until very fineand getting creamy. Add1/2 cup powdered sugarand 1/2 cup semi-sweetchocolate chips, melted.

Pulse until blended. Storein refrigerator. Bring toroom temperature beforeserving. Makes 1 cup.

New Jersey Civic Youth BalletPresents The Nutcracker

Easy Energy BarsPrep time: about 10 min.

cup nonfat dry milk powder1 tablespoon Smart Balance Milk

cup Smart Balance Rich Roast Peanut Butter (creamy or chunky)1 cups minimarshmallows

1 tablespoon Smart Balance Buttery Spread Original2 cups high-protein, multigrain cluster cereal, crushed

cup dried blueberries cup dark chocolate chips, melted (optional)

Line the bottom of an 8-inch square pan with wax paper. In a small bowl, mixdry milk powder with milk to moisten. Place the peanut butter, buttery spreadand marshmallows in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat in microwave for

30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth. Stir in milkmixture. Add crushed cereal and blueberries to peanut butter mixture and stiruntil evenly mixed. Transfer to prepared pan.

Use a flat-bottom container or a glass to firmly and evenly press mixture intopan. Cool completely. When cooled, invert pan onto a cutting board, allowing

pressed mixture to fall onto board. Discard wax paper. Cut square pressedmixture in half, then cut each half into six (4-inch) bars. If desired, drizzle

melted chocolate over bars and store in airtight container.Yield: Six 4-inch bars.

Hope Everyone has been on their best behavior! It is that time of theyear! We all love to see Santa no matter where or when he pops up!Usually, there is a lot of to-do, long lines, dazzling Christmas treesamid beautiful winter settings. There was just something special,as I watched this Santa and Mrs. Claus in action, or maybe I shouldsay interaction, with the children! I don't know if it was the quaintsetting, the fact that Mrs. Claus was also present playing an activerole, their clothing, the children's actions, or a combination of all,but I just had to go back to my car and get the camera!! This willmake a nice Christmas Card from me to you! Merry Christmas,
