Slate Belt Heritage Center Offers How To Research Your Family Tree Expanded Young Farmers Market Available Again in Bangor This Summer On Wednesdays throughout the summer, local students will again operate a farm stand in downtown Bangor. The farm stand will run June 29th through August 24th, from 10am to 2pm, and is located on South Main Street between Broadway and Market Streets in downtown Bangor. The Young Farmers Market, an innovative agricultural partnership between the Bangor Area School District, the Bangor Community Partnership, local farm- ers and State Farm Insurance Companies, is part of The Exploring Your Future (EYF) after-school program held at DeFranco Elementary and Bangor Middle School. For the past three years, students have studied linkages between farm and school, exploring the phases of developing and maintaining a school garden, com- posting programs and integrating classroom agriculture curriculum into the after-school program. The farm stand is made possible through a grant from State Farm and the Bangor Community Partnership, a collabora- tion between Bangor Area School District, the Borough of Bangor, and local merchants of Bangor. Each week, Bangor State Farm Agent Brian Witmer, Merchants Bank and the Bangor Business Association volunteer to provide resources to run the farm stand and to promote the students, the town of Bangor and a greener, more natural way of life through nutrition, by supporting local farms in the heart of downtown. “It was great getting that ‘big check’ from State Farm; their interest and support is greatly appreciated,” said sixth grade student Eli Hoyte, part of the EYF program. From picking vegetables at local farms, to selling produce to customers, it’s all about working together to grow a healthier community. “The Young Farmers Market is an excellent example of service- learning – combining classroom curriculum and student empower- ment to benefit a com- munity. State Farm believes programs like this improve academic skills by helping students apply what they learn in school to the real world and feel great about the results,” said Witmer. “And as a local business owner and project supporter, I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact it has on the students and on the community.” For more information, contact Sherri Clifford at 610-599-7019, or Angela Rice at 610- 216-8457.
