The Prez Sez (By: Debbie Darwin) I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. It’s hard to believe that 2014 is over. Now it’s time for reflections and looking ahead.

Reflecting over this past year – well, there have been some challenges in the Club. The biggest one has been the copier issue – and subsequent need to make our Islander newsletter “Green”. It wasn’t the only reason we had to make that tough decision though. Our Editor and Assistant Editor gave notice of their well-deserved retirement from the newsletter and after several months of trying to find replacements, we were unsuccessful in our efforts to do so. We have been forging ahead with bringing you a worthy monthly on-line newsletter. Thank you for all your feedback – we appreciate it! If you would like to get involved with the Civic Club and/or the newsletter, then I’m happy to announce that officer elections are coming up in just a few short months. So, for those that are interested in contributing and volunteering for one of the officer positions, or volunteering for the editor or assistant editor positions, please step up! It’s your chance to get involved in the Civic Club and feel great about doing so! Speaking of getting involved, we had a great time at the annual Adult’s Christmas party on December 19th. A big “THANK YOU” goes out to Priscilla Duffy and Shanna McGinty for organizing this wonderful party. They worked very hard to bring us fantastic food, a great DJ and a fun hat contest! Bryan Hoerner won with his clever snow globe Christmas hat – that was really something to see! “Great job” to all of those that put together such interesting hats. We really had a merry evening and managed to dance the night away with some fun folks – thank you again Priscilla, Shanna and to all of the volunteers who helped decorate the Club House at our last Civic Club meeting. We also had a great time, on the 21st, when Beverly and Walter Caldwell and their band of merry elves organized the “Christmas Cart-olers”. We went riding around on our golf carts, spreading Christmas cheer by singing Christmas Carols to the residents of our island and even to unsuspecting folks dining at Opus! That was a kick! Riding all around the island, it was great to see folks come out of their homes and listen to our merry tunes. We only had one Scrooge yell at us to “SHUT UP”, but other than that, everyone else enjoyed our efforts at spreading Christmas cheer and I’m already looking forward to doing it again next year! Speaking of next year…well…it’s here! Reminder to you that we will not have a Civic Club meeting in January as we take time to think about the past and plan for the future – and catch our breath. Yes, 2015 is here! Whew! It’s been a great 2014 and I hope that you were able to attend many of our Club’s activities. Please plan on attending in 2016. Mancakes will be coming up in February – that’s always a hoot and a great way to kick-off the New Year with a fun (and yummy) event. Again, start thinking about how you might like to become an officer in the Club. Elections will be coming up before you know it…so, think about running for a position and having a great time with your fellow Club members! I want to thank Pege Wright, Jan Finnerty, Kimmy Johnson and John Wright for all their hard work and dedication as this year’s Club officers. It’s been a pleasure working with you and I’m looking forward to the remainder of our term. To everyone else…I wish you a Happy New Year! And, thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter! Regards, Debbie

Island Gardening Tips for January By Julie Moncur We sure had a surprise with some near freezing temperatures in November! Sorry I did not touch on preparation for this, but I never dreamed we would have such an early onset of winter here. So I hope you all were able to take in plants or cover plants that needed to be protected from the dropping temperatures. -If a severe cold snap is forecasted, water lawn, shrubs, trees and potted plants if soil moisture is low. This will help reduce injury from the cold. It is often the wind drying out the plants that gets that does more damage than the actual temperature. We were lucky with the cold snaps that were accompanied by rain, so nature took care of the watering prep. -Rake up leaves for a healthier lawn and to reduce many fungal leaf spot .Most leaves make great temporary mulch. Raked pine needles make the best mulch ,especially for azaleas or other plants that like high nitrogen soil. -Thinking of planting annual pansies in pots or flower beds, remember the more you feed pansies and remove old blooms, the more they bloom. They will give you pleasure for months. They can be pressed in paper and dried to use for crafts. They even are cute in hanging baskets. - Now is a great time of year to increase efforts to enrich your soil. Till humus and manure into your garden soil and add 2 to 3 pounds of a slow release fertilizer per 100 square feet. Spreading a thin layer of compost to low spots or areas of your grass that did not do as well this year. - Time to inspect holly, camellia, citrus and other plants for scale insects. Apply dormant oil now. Follow label directions. -Other annuals that should be readily available and good to plant this month are California poppy, nasturtium, sweet pea and phlox seed. Narcissus is a flower of the month and very fragrant. If you are one of the lucky ones it will come back for years after putting a flower bed. Other annuals like snapdragons, dianthus, delphiniums, and primroses are great for hanging baskets and they are the ones with the most fragrance . With a little care you can make them last through until spring and they will attract hummingbird scouts. -Wait until all chance of freezing weather is past before pruning plants, because pruning encourages new tender growth. -Master Gardner fruit tree sales will be around the corner in the spring. The nice rain we had this past summer helped to make it a great year for citrus. Think of doing research if you might want to plant a fruit tree. There are many that require low chill hours and do well in the area. Several peach varieties will grow well here. - As always in January, keep up the supplemental watering and start making your plans and goals for spring gardening to have something fun to look forward to in the New Year! HAPPY ISLAND GARDENING!
