Welcome back to
all those lucky Victorians who travelled to Darwin and enjoyed the
hospitality of our Territorian friends for the 2016 Championships. Fortune managed to come the way of some and I congratulate all our members who were successful in the individuals and teams events. About the only negative to come from the adventure seems to be all the germs they brought back. I’ve heard and read enough to realize there was a serious bug infecting all the Vics.
With the success of the Darwin Championships complete, we now have our turn again to impress the rest of Australia and host the 2017 Championships. Everyone who follows Masters Squash would know we have chosen Ballarat as the venue for 2017. Now we have to tell the rest of Victoria to come and be a part of something which only comes around in our state every 8 years. It would be fantastic if we could host an event unrivalled in numbers and enjoyment for all concerned. For all those intending to be in Ballarat next September, I suggest you start looking for suitable accommodation early. The dates of the tournament again are 4th-15th September.

From the A.G.M. It is with regret the VMSA
membership subscription will
increase to $25 as of the 1st
January 2017. Rising costs
associated with website
development and tournament
expenses along with preparations
for our major event in Ballarat 2017
- the Australian Masters
Championships, have contributed to
this increase. The previous fee was
set so along ago no one can recall
exactly when. So to my knowledge
that is at least 15 yrs ago when I
joined the VMSA Committee. I hope
the loyal members and supporters
of our association understand and
accept this increase. We are always
trying to keep your squash expenses
to a minimum yet continue to
provide great value for money with
the running of our pennant
competition and tournaments.
Thanks for your continued support.

TOURNAMENT REPORT

2016 SHEPPARTON MASTERS TOURNAMENT
Again we had a great weekend in Shepparton. Unfortunately the numbers were down quite a bit from last year. Even so, there were a lot of great matches, and a record number of them went to 4 or 5. 60% to be exact. Well played all! Thank you to all who entered. 76 entries including 2 “Virgins” Around half of you entered on line this time. Our on-line entry system is very easy to use, so hopefully more of you will take advantage of this. No paper needed, so it’s good for the environment. Makes Linda’s and my job easier as well. You also have the chance to win free VMSA merchandise. Winner of our on line entry draw for this tournament was Jill Morsch. The members at Shepparton, especially the juniors, kept the food and drink flowing and really looked after us well. Great job!! The wine tasting table was an added attraction upstairs with some fine wines available to sample from our sponsor, Combined Liquor. A job well done Jill. The bus to the dinner dance was again well organized by Michelle, and 75% of the dinner dance attendees utilized this service. The organizing of the bus is so much easier if those who want to use the service, nominate to do so on their entry form. Winner of our Members Draw for 2 free dinner dance tickets was Michael Ratcliffe. Congratulations to the following players for reaching tournament milestones this weekend. Michael Byrnes 25 Waka Elers 25 Ross Meddings 50 Shane Thorpe 50 Thank you all for your continued support.

THE PREZ SEZ – Continued from page 1
The entry form for the 2017 Championships is being created and will be posted on the VMSA website as soon as possible. I will keep you updated regarding its progress. Keep “chilling out” with squash this Winter.
Prior to the Australian Championships, Ballarat will also host the Australia v New Zealand Masters Squash Test series. The three test series will be held at the Wendouree Squash Centre commencing 28th August 2017. Be sure to come along and watch the cream of our Australian Masters players up against the Kiwis. Back to local news and you may realize I'm still your Prez. The AGM was held prior to Darwin and all members of the 2016 committee were re-elected. This is very pleasing as it demonstrates the commitment of our team as we build toward the Australians in 2017. It was also pleasing to see a good attendance at the AGM to witness JILL MORSCH inducted as our 10th LIFE MEMBER. Congratulations Jill on a wonderful achievement. You so thoroughly deserve to be rewarded in this way.
In pennant news, we're at the half way mark of the season. Now most people are back from Darwin, teams should be strengthened again as the second half hots up and we push towards finals. My team sits well off the pace but after a good win last week, we are building again. Go PEGS. As I complete this article, best wishes to Bert Hoveling from our committee who has been in ill health recently. Hope you bounce back soon Bert. We're thinking of you.

SHEPPARTON MASTERS - 2016 Tournament Director’s
Report Cont. from previous page
For those of you who may not be aware, on our website under the tournaments tab, is a detailed list of all players who have received a milestone badge. Worth a look. My sincere thanks to Karen and Darren for their invaluable assistance behind the desk. Now to Ballarat. Matches will be Best of 5 games PAR 15, with a 2 point advantage. We will provide a bus to the dinner dance at the nominal cost of $10 for those people that are staying in or close to the city centre. For those that are staying at The Belltower, The Alfred, The Avenue, and The Ambassador the golf club is a short stroll across the road so you will not need the bus. For those that will need the bus, please book your seat on your entry form. There will be 3 or 4 pick up points which will be advised to you (by Michelle) on Saturday. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! get your entries in as soon as you can. And PLEASE!!!!! Book your seat for the dinner dance with your entry. Numbers have to be confirmed 7 days before the event, so let me know if you are attending. Hope to see you all in Ballarat
Helena – Tournament Director
It’s easy to enter our tournaments on-line, but to encourage more people to enter this way, we are awarding a prize at each tournament to a lucky member that enters this way. The only requirement is to be a current member of the VMSA, enter on-line and you are in the draw. Just sign in, check your personal details are still correct and at the bottom of that page, there is a button to ‘save and enter’ which will take you straight to the entry. EASY!! We already award a prize to a current member each tournament so here is another great reason to become a member of the VMSA.

OUR NEWEST LIFE MEMBER OF THE V.M.S.A. – JILL MORSCH
PRESIDENT’S LIFE MEMBERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT SPEECH “Being involved in squash is like marriage to some extent, It’s an all encompassing passion which starts with a love affair, develops into a commitment and remains a bond ‘til death do us part – or so it seems. During this time you have moments of disappointment and you have moments of glory and frustration (both on and off the court), yet remain committed because of that love affair which developed long ago . In 1961 such a person started their career as a squash player which developed into a lifelong commitment both on and off the court and still remains bonded to the sport even though their playing career finished in 1995. During this career and memorably less than 12 months after playing in a pennant final, a family member was born. On becoming a teenager in the early 80’s, this person started watching Dad play squash after school, and low and behold, got hooked into the same sport and soon got married – to squash. Playing squash at Knox with family and where Dad served as Manager from 1988 to 1994, the newlywed took on an active role as Secretary and as a result, life membership was awarded to him in 1992 – such was the love affair and commitment to the sport (like Dads). In 1992, this person became involved in the VMSA as a new player on the pennant and tournament scene which many may remember or choose to curse (such were the antic back then). What fun was had with Dad who was Tournament Director up until 1999. In 2001, with the love affair at it’s peak and so too became a lasting bond to the VMSA, first as Match & Pennant Co-ordinator, then as Madam Vice President, Event Director in 2009 and 2017 Australian Masters Championships and as Masters/Juniors Pennant Director. To this day she still holds all these positions as a dedicated member of our association.
For a career devoted to squash, which started with her father taking up squash back in 1961 and to a commitment of her own since the mid 80’s which remains ongoing since becoming a member of the VMSA Committee in 2001, I have pleasure in pronouncing the 10th Life Member of this Association – JILL MORSCH.”

2016 AUSTRALIAN MASTERS CHAMPION SHIPS
- DARWIN
ByTeam Co-ordinators – Darren O’Neill and Michelle Rowles
Just when you think you’re going to have a nice easy week watching the Vic players take more
championship trophies than ever before, a massive virus hits and knocked us for a complete
six, it was like watching the stock exchange crash when about 12 players took ill in the first
few days and struggled to get back to their best. I would love to sincerely thank all the
players who helped us out filling in, so thanks heaps, you saved the day.
Darwin put on a fabulous tournament and the weather was perfect as you would expect. The
committee did a fine job and made sure we were well looked after . I hadn’t been to the new
courts before but must say they are world class and I really enjoyed hitting on them.
The functions were great and being outdoors made them extra special. However, when the
heavens opened up at the Teams Dinner Dance, we saw over 400 people running for cover. This
year Darwin didn’t do a Wrinkley’s Review evening but did a pool party instead. I went and
thought it was a great night. Something else Darwin did was introduce a Doubles Mini
Tournament which was pretty cool. Our players who attended said it was great fun. Oh, and if
anyone has seen Janine Eedy, check her pulse. The woman is amazing playing the singles, teams,
doubles and filled in more than once - you’re a fab girl.
As always we started our campaign off with the Victorian Team’s Dinner and this year it was
held at the Darwin Yacht Club on the Sunday night. We had loads to eat plus we enjoyed the
weather by having this outdoors. We took a group photo with the Darwin sunset in the
background which was spectacular. Michelle and I thought we would do something slightly
different this year and get a cake made with all of the player’s names on it, I think it was a
great idea and I think everyone got a kick out of it. Thanks everyone who attended you made
the night fantastic, plus also a big thanks to AMSA president Mr Peter Wright and his lovely
partner Irene for attending.
Darwin had loads of entries which flooded in steadily over the past few months. They achieved
23 Divisions and the great man Garry Irwin (NSW) must have spent days putting all the draws
together. Considering all that happened we still took 18 teams away and that’s a great effort -
approx. 56 players. So a big congratulations to all the players who won something for their
efforts.
We look forward to seeing you all again in Ballarat in 2017.
Pictured Left The oldest & youngest Victorian participants amongst the men at the Australian Masters Championships - Max Smyth (born 1928) & Russell McLean (born 1981) - 53 years difference – The game of Squash has no age barrier. Pictured below Mark Thurkle was looking a little diminutive in stature amongst his teammates and opposition, so Darren O’Neill came to the rescue and gave a hand (or back) to Mark with a little uplifting. Now he’s ‘king of the castle’. Well, what are friends for?

WORLD MASTERS SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS JOHANNESBURG 2016
Going to Johannesburg for my first World Masters Squash Tournament is probably one of the best things I have
ever done. The people, like squashies as we know them, are just great people, and they all share a common
interest.
Gary Irwin approached me and thought it would be a great idea to have Aussies in a common uniform, at first I
had no idea on what to expect but now I can see what a great idea he had.
Well there we are and names of people I have never even heard of, there are people from other parts of the
world who are Australian and played under the Australian Banner and now live overseas so it was nice they
still had the passion to play for Australia.
If you had been following Facebook you would have seen the great achievements of tournament goers like
Kevin Healy, Peter Gilbee, Sarah Fitzgerald, Brian Lyons, Tom Slattery, Anne Richards, and Marilyn Kennedy.
I personally would like to congratulate everyone who played, I’m sure you had a fabulous time and agree that
the South Africans did a cracking job to organise 950 players from around the world.
The tournament was played over seven days starting on the Saturday and finishing on the Friday. It was played
out of 3 separate venues Johannesburg Country Club, Parkview Squash Centre and the very famous Wanderers
Club Johannesburg which has a full glass court as a standard set up.
We had a welcoming function on the Friday, a casual night on the Monday with a street food set up, a fantastic
band and full bar set up. Friday was the closing function which was set at the Wanderers Club with guest
speakers, music and great food.
Con't next page
It’s my second time to South Africa and I find the South Africans to be very similar to the Australians and had
one of the best holidays ever. Well worth the visit if you’re looking for a great place to visit.
Further details about the tournament can be found at http://squash999.com/wsfworldmasters/ Hope to see you in CHARLOTTEVILLE, USA 2018
Kind Regards Darren O’Neill
