The Governor’s Club Visitations are nearly completed and we have had a great time! What now? It’s time to start acting on those goals we set at the beginning of our Lions year. are we increasing our service to others? Are we incorporating those new ideas and projects? Are we accomplishing those membership/leadership goals we set? For our District this year, we had planned three to five new Lions Clubs and emphasis on club retentiona nd membership satisfaction. We currently have 1,030 Lions in our District. Our goal is to surpass 1,100 members by the end of this Lions year (June 30, 2017). We are currently working on new Liosn Clubs in Banning and Hesperia. The Banning Lions Club is anticipated to charter within the next couple of weeks. We are also looking at new clubs in Perris, Redlands, Lake Elsinore, San Bernardino and in the lower Desert (La Quinta, Coachella). District projects we have accomplished this year have included the KidSight program and the continued vision screenings by California Lions Friends in Sight (CLFIS). Since September, we have provided visions screenings to over 10,500 children through KidSight. CLFIS anticipates the screening of over 13,000 patients this year. The California Lions Foundation (CLF) received its 501(c) (3) designation last month. CLF is committed to Calfiornia Lions Clubs filing humanitarian needs throughout the state of California. CLF wills trive to support projects that provide humanitarian services and disaster relief thorugh Lions Clubs in California. It’s an exciting time to be a Lion! We have had a great first half of the year and we plan on an even better second half! Lion Lucy and I are having a great time serving District 4L5! HAPPY NEW YEAR! 1ST Vice DISTRICT GOVERNOR MIKE JONES 2ND Vice DISTRICT GOVERNOR BILL HANNON ~SEASONINGS~

It may sound strange, instead of Seasons Greetings but I think it is more accurate. seasonings add spice and flavor to meals and beverages, so do the holidays, though everyone seems to be rushed and there is never enough time to enjoy, the best always shows through. We take a moment to relect, remembers and celebrate with those nearest and dearest to us. Our fellow Lions are out in their communities selling trees, wreaths, gift wrapping, ringing bells, breakfast with Santa, visitng seniors, serving holdiay meals, delivering food baskets; along with the usual activities that they do in their communities. Once again affirming our centennial motto “where there is a need there is a Lion.” We are close to completing our visitations and each one has been my own little Christmas celebration. For all the gifts of information and enthusiasm that I can offer, i receive the gift of knowing each Lion out there is giving of their time and energy to make their community and the world a better place through their services. I am proud to serve as your 1st Vice District Governor. As we near the halfway point of theis lions year we are making progress in getting more people to join us and help make a difference. We continue to work on new clubs in Banning and Hesperia. The KidSight vision screeners are out there making a BIG difference; I think we have surpassed last year’s ttal screenigns in the past five months. We all have friends and family who are hard to buy for; as they seem to have everything; why not make adonation to the Lions Sight and Hearing or LCIF in their name. With this they may just have the best of everything, a difference in the world with their name on it! Thank you for all you do, your time and efforts are not unnoticed, just sometimes not given the proper thanks; so thank you!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Live Long and Prosper \\//1ST VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR ~MIKE JONES

Hi Fellow Lions, Does Membership have a sense of URGENCY in your club’s goals? Here it is halftime in your club’s year. the first half has flown by us all. HOw does your club stack up as far as your membership count goes? Does your club have more or less members than it had this same item last year? It takes alot of effort and a desire to be a viable service club; to really make a difference in helping others in your community, you must experience growth in membership. “A LIONS CLUB THAT ISN’T MOVING FORWARD, WILL EVENTUALLY FALL BACKWARDS.” Has your club fallen into a routine; same old, same old? it is time for your club to do a member analysis. There are several catagories of member participation: 1. VERY ACTIVE - Leadership role, attends all meetings, project chair or committee member, involved in almost all fund raisers and projects, motivates others, promotes Lionism in their community, represents club at district events, recruits members. 2. ACTIVE - Leadership role, attends most meetings, works most projects and / or fundraisers. 3. SEMI - ACTIVE - Attends occasional meetings, works some projects and /or fundraisers. 4. RARELY ACTIVE - Almost never attends a meeting, maybe works a project sometimes. 5. IN-ACTIVE - Pays dues but never attends meetings or works projects. There can be many reasons whymembers become less active, such as they may not feel appreciated, needed, recognized, welcome or they don’t feel they are part of something useful. They join to serve and if no one asked them to help, they feel their time is being wasted. Now is the time to look at every member to find out how they fit in.

Greetings Brothers and Sister, Happy New Years to each of you, I am hopeful that everyone was able to enjoy the Holidays with family, friends, and loved ones. We are all extremely blessed to be surrounded by our extended family of Lions. December was a great time in which clubs and members from throughout the state celebrated with Club Parties, Service projects, and good old fashion fellowship. Special Thank You to PDG Ken Red for once again taking the lead and coordinating our district participation in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade float building. The Centennial Float was truly a highlight of this year’s parade, and our District was well represented by Lions, Leos and Cubs, lead by our District Governor Rob. Additional Kudos to all the members of the Yucaipa club for another truly magical Christmas parade, Job Well done. Lion Penny and I had the unique opportunity to be a part of hosting the International President and his wife, Chancellor Bob and Diane Corlew over the New Year’s weekend in Pasadena and Rosemead. Together they are a truly inspiring and motivating force for Lions around the world. We were blessed to spend time with them taking care of State Lions business, and sharing in stories of their global travels and adventures. President Corlew was very impressed with the work being done here in our District, from the CLFIS, to Kid Sight, to the help with the recent fires. As we head into 2017, and we move past the Holiday season, lets challenge ourselves to be the best volunteer servant we can be, and inspire others to do the same. There has never been a more exciting time to be a Lion, as we march closure to our International Convention in Chicago, celebrating our centennial of service, we will see an increase in national PR campaign spots. Plant the seed with your non lion friends, ask them if they would like to have the “Lion Feeling” that comes from helping others. California continues to lead the way in membership growth, and our district is working hard to grow as well. Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there~ Will Rogers January brings our District Melvin Jones Fellowship appreciation luncheon, where we will honor all those MJF’s and acknowledge the newest members to the fellowship. The luncheon will be highlighted by key note speakers, Past International President Bill Biggs and his wife Past Director Dana Biggs. The event is a great opportunity to not only celebrate those fellowship members, but offers a chance to raise much needed funds for Lion Clubs International Foundation and the incredible work being done there. For those of you who will be attending the state convention in Redding, CA. in early February, please touch base with your home club and make sure to complete the delegate registration forms, so you can vote. We have work to be done in both our clubs and our District as we continue to be the best we can be, our goal is always to help as many as we can. Lets continue the hard work and be diligent to make the second half of this Lions year, the best ever.

Thank you for all you do for your communities, your clubs, and our association,

As Region Chairperson, I have had the privilege of visiting all of the clubs in the Desert Region, from Blythe to Redlands, plus several outside the region with my own Yucaipa Valley Lions Club. What a great experience that has been; getting to know members from other clubs that one possibly would never meet. In addition to making new friendships you have the opportunity to see and hear what other clubs are doing, gleening ideas that you could import to your club. I know that the topic of visitiatons is periodically brought up to everyone’s club, but a few actually act on it. I encouage each and every club in 4L5 to make and effort to visit other clubs in the District and develop those friendships and ideas for your clubs.

WORLD SERVICES OF THE BLIND GUIDE DOGS OF THE DESERT

KIDSIGHT Happy Holidays to all my Lion, Lioness and Leo friends!!! Thanksgiving and Christmas are alwasy favorite holidays, with happy times with family and friends. Our Lions families also hold many holiday events, with parties, parades, dinners, visits with shut ins and many others. The Holiday season is also an excellent time to remember our favorite Lions projects, with our annual gifts and donations. So as you plan, keep in mind our Lions Family Center Project at City of Hope in Duarte. We are getting very close to keeping our Milion Dollar Miracle commitment with nearly $800,000 already contributed. However, we cannot complete our pledge without your help; so please keep that in mind as we near the half-way point in this Lions year. Recently I had surgery at City of Hope and I was able to stay at the Family Center both pre and post op! I was so impressed with the facility and all it has to offer the patient and their families. So I know first hand how exceptional and special this Lions Porject is and how wonderful it will be to see the Lions name and logo on it!!!! As always, if you have any questions about the Lions Family Center Project, please feel free to contact me. Please send you Holdiay dontation check to me at the address below and remember to note Lions Family Center on the Memo Line. Story shared by Lion Ronela Tavoc, LLPO Program Manager

~~Upon a follow-up call to a parent of a boy with a fair amount of astigmatism in both eyes, the mother told us that her son broke his glasses. Currently many insurance companies, including IEHP (the insurance he had), glasses are only covered every two years. Given their financial situation, they were not able to pay for new glasses. The Lions Club currently has a partnership with Zennioptical.com and we are able to purchase glasses using their coupon code. When I told her that we would buy her son new glasses, she started to cry! She was so thankful for the gift. A few weeks later, her son received the glasses and said he loves them!

LIONS HAPPENINGSLIONS HAPPENINGS“She’s beautiful”

The Behind the Scenes Story Prior to the 2016 California Lions Friends in Sight (CLFIS) vision screening in Barstow, 87 year old Chyde Pope had never seen an eye doctor or worn prescription eye-glasses. Accompanied by her daughter, she was among the thousands of people we serve each year whose stories move us. Her story ends when volunteer Kathy Ogaz fits and cleans her new prescription eyeglasses and asks her to look at her daughter. With a wide-eyed gaze Chyde declares, “She’s beautiful!” So where does Chyde’s story begin? It all starts with Lions Clubs placing eyeglass collection boxes at doctor’s offices and businesses in communities throughout Southern California. From there, literally hundreds of caring and committed volunteers go to work on the before and after responsibilities needed to provide a free vision screening with free recycled eyeglasses. On a regular schedule, Lions go out to the collection box locations to gather up hundreds of the donated eyeglasses. Others then sort through the collected eyeglasses to pull out those that are in good condition. Eyeglass cases, sunglasses, and unusable damaged eyeglasses are separated out. These materials are then delivered to one of four Lions Clubs where more volunteers go to work inspecting, cleaning, and measuring the useable eyeglasses. The prescription numbers are hand written on the lenses before transporting them with sunglasses and cases to the CLFIS processing center in Beaumont. There they are placed in holding bins within the specified range of prescriptions. Broken and damaged materials are sent off to a recycling center where the proceeds are used to help offset CLFIS operating expenses. Early in the process, trained volunteers categorize men’s, women’s, kids, single vision & multifocals and identify the range of prescriptions that will best meet the people’s needs. They are then bar coded, labeled, and entered into the CLFIS computer system. From there, 12 rolling racks are stocked with 17,000 of these selected recycled eye-glasses to cover the next vision screening. Between each screening, volunteers pull specific eyeglasses from the bins, label, and place them in the appropriate rolling rack slots left open from the previous screening. Chyde Pope’s eyeglasses are in there somewhere. So, how are the over 30 CLFIS weekend vision screenings that are conducted each year organized in the first place? Months ahead of time, Lions Clubs and other service organizations begin applying for a spot on the schedule. Most are annual events, some are new. Once a date is confirmed by a CLFIS organizer, the sponsoring organization’s members go to work on securing a suitable venue, get the word out with effective promotion, recruit local doctors and opticians, and step up with their own volunteers to work the screening. Local volunteers help with unloading and setup of equipment, rolling racks, and supplies. Others work to register patients, arrange seating at each of 5 screening stations, and provide morning and lunchtime food and drinks for volunteers. Once underway, local volunteers direct patient traffic flow and assist trained CLFIS staff at work stations. It is here where local volunteers can themselves be trained and are encouraged to become “regulars” at other screenings conducted throughout the year. Several days before the screening, CLFIS volunteers get to work on an array of necessary preparation responsibilities. To ensure a full team, the data base manager prepares and disseminates email communications announcing the upcoming screening to regular team members and past volunteers within the geographic proximity to determine their plans on attending. Gaps, if any, are filled with telephone outreach. Lions from the pool of CLFIS drivers are identified for the vans and trailers that will be used to transport volunteers, equipment, rolling racks, and supplies to the screen-ing. The drivers wash, check condition, and gas up the vehicles. The evening before and morning of the screening the drivers pick up the vans at staging areas and, together with other volunteers, load eye examination equipment from each of Dr. Brian Van Dusen’s two Inland Empire offices. Early on the morning of the screening, some volunteers drive to the staging areas to ride in the vans while others car pool from all over Southern California to converge on the screening location by 7:00 am. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the sponsoring Lions Club or organization and unloading and setup begins for an 8:00 am start time. For some volunteers, the vision screening is only the beginning. At its conclusion, patient sign-in sheets, eye examination forms, referral/consultation forms, volunteer sign-ins, and the records for the patients whose eyeglass needs could not be met are all collected for follow-up action. With the trailers loaded, the vans return to the staging area for unloading and reinstallation of equipment at Dr. Van Dusen’s offices. During the week that follows, drivers take care of vehicle/trailer and equipment/instrument repairs that cropped up over the screening weekend. The next day brings a CLFIS record keeping and communications undertaking. The work includes a tally of the screening results covering the number of patients seen, computing of the eyeglasses provided, identification of patients with eyeglasses to be fabricated, number and type of pathologies matched to the screening’s referral/consultation form, volunteer sign in sheet, and rolling rack replenishment requirements. Reports are then generated and forwarded to volunteers for the official tabulation, webmaster posting on the CLFIS website, and volunteer data base updating. Patients diagnosed with pathology have their name, phone number, condition and insurance status recorded. That information is forwarded to the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation for assistance. For patients whose prescription could not be closely matched from the recycled eyeglasses inventory at the screening, CLFIS goes the extra mile to order or make new glasses in our optical lab using new prescription lenses generously donated to CLFIS by the Essilor Vision Foundation. Once made, the new eyeglasses are mailed to the sponsoring Lions Club for delivery to the patients. This Behind the Scenes Story would not be complete or even possible without the Beaumont facility where the processing and inventory management for many thousands of donated eyeglasses is performed. An area is also provided for a fully-equipped optical finishing lab and vehicle storage in the yard. The space is on the property of Ranney Custom Builders and made available to CLFIS at no cost by Lion Don Ranney California Lions Friends in Sight is the embodiment of the Lions Club motto, “We Serve”. Our all-volunteer group is a Lions Club International affiliated organization. We share the goal of improving more people’s lives, just like Chyde Pope’s, through the continued expansion of our humanitarian service. _________________________________________________________________________________NOTE: CLFIS hopes to purchase a building with expanded space for work stations, inventory shelving, optical lab, training area, connected garage for vehicle parking, maintenance and repair, equipment/instruments storage and a screening staging area. This purchase can be possible with earmarked donations from generous supporters.
