Major Sponsor
MOUNTAIN BLUE CAFE
Some lucky winners of our raffles this year have been treated to vouchers to Mountain Blue Café, Glenbrook.
It’s just a short drive up the Motorway, where you’ll enjoy a diverse menu, especially enjoyable for ‘all day’
breakfast or a lunch, and why not follow it up with a browse through the gift shop and a look at the panorama
painting. A very pleasant experience!
COVER PAGE

Penrith Anglican College.

PROJECT ‘STICKY DOTS’
A big ‘Thank You’ to Brendan McKeown of Click Media for giving the Club a project that we named ‘Sticky
Dots’ as the requirement was placing double sided adhesive dots onto a pamphlet and affixing a fridge magnet,
then placing it all in an envelope, sealing it and repeat the procedure 10,000 times! The donation for the task
was greatly appreciated. Now if I could just get the dots off my hands!!!

PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Parkinson’s NSW is a for purpose organisation providing
essential services to people living with Parkinson’s, their
families and carers. Services currently include an InfoLine
staffed by Parkinson's specialist nurses, Neurological Nurses in
the community, over 70 Support Groups, counselling, education
seminars and we also fund research to find new treatments and ultimately a cure.
Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition which affects the brain's ability to control movement and
may also be associated with other symptoms including mood, depression and anxiety. There is no cure.
In Australia, every hour of every day someone is diagnosed with Parkinson's. Latest research suggest up to
212,000* (1 in 117) Australians are living with Parkinson's. Whilst the majority of people affected are over 60
at the time of diagnoses, 18% are of working age and 10% are under the age of 40.
The Unity Walk held on Sun 25 Aug aims to bring people together to show support for loved ones and
remember those touched by Parkinson’s. Over the past 11 years this event has raised over $1,000,000 thanks to
the efforts of more than 16,700 participants. You can still donate to ‘TEAM DEVINE’ at:
https://unity2019.everydayhero.com/au/jack
Parkinson’s NSW is a non-Government funded organisation.
Support for PD sufferers and their carers see Nepean and Blue Mountains Parkinson’s Support Group
(www.bmpsg.org) which meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at Penrith RSL. Contact the Coordinator,

AWARD WINNING NEWSLETTER
As I think I’ve mentioned (numerous times) I am proud that this
humble little publication is the winner of the Ted Tricker Memorial
Trophy Bulletin Award for the best newsletter in Lions District
201N5, for the 3rd year in a row.
It is only right and proper that the trophy be shared amongst those
who supported it from its’ creation to its’ current iteration.
So, I would like, for the next month, for Mark Nielsen to hold the
trophy, in recognition of his wonderful work on ' Mark’s Connection
Column', and various other stories on his extraordinary talent for
fundraising.
PENRITH SHOW
The Penrith Show was held on the Aug weekend 24-25. It was a
time that the local Zone Lions Clubs of Emu Plains, Penrith,
Cambridge Park, plus Winmalee and Kings Langley got together to
do what we do best … WE SERVE!

It’s Only Words Rediscovering the wonder
and value of the written word.
After a short break I am delighted to be with you
again with this month’s offering.
“To be or not to be that is the question”
Is the opening phrase of the soliloquy in
Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act 3 Scene 1
Shakespeare the poet, playwright and actor is
widely regarded as the greatest writer in the
English language and the world’s most renowned
dramatist, often regarded as England’s national
poet, “The Bard of Avon.”
In my earlier years while in school I was taught and
read many of his exceptional works, but was
probably too young to fully appreciate the
implications, morals and purpose of his eloquent
writings.
In reflection many, many years later and having
become somewhat wiser and more worldly, I have
a better understanding of his works.
And was once again it is the correct use of words
that I choose to emphasise in this month’s column.
I begin by asking how Shakespeare would have
viewed the way we use words today in our
communications reasoning and interpretation of our
thoughts actions and hopes.
This thought opened my mind to consider our
evolving world and hurried lifestyle. Surely speed
and time saving has found its way into every nook,
cranny and micron of our daily lives even unto, yes,
the written word.
With the reviews and results of the recent
NAPLAN taking place annually in our schools, it is
clear our children are where it starts, particularly
when it comes to spelling, punctuation and
construction of sentences. Their writing efforts and
learning skills are a window to their future and our
hopes for them also.
As we experience the times and environment of
new generations, we are also witness to the use of
words often or not being lost, both in structure and
expressions with its many consequences.
And so, I chose to add another string to my
proverbial literary bow with a platform and forum
where words, writers, poets, readers and others who
are interested, can be challenged or inspired. I
believe it’s up to us, if we are to participate in the
preservation of the true and meaningful values of
the written word in whichever language it is
written. It is vital for words to remain as they were
intended to be, as the foundation for our unique
human gift which makes us whom we are.
Let us continue to be an example to others with the
appropriate use of words.
As It is written in the Bible
“Man cannot live on bread alone
But by every word the word that proceeds out from
the mouth of God”. Matthew 4:4
My closing paragraphs suggests with the right
words man shall live a life of greater
understanding, reasoning and purpose.
This is a wake-up call to all humanity and for
people who love and appreciate the value of
original words.
Words that shape and form pictures in our minds
eye.
Words that inspire our imagination.
Words that express our inner emotions.
Words that give us hope in those dark places.
Words that inspire and motivate us to awaken our
vision.
Words that simply make more sense....
Yes “to be or not be” is really up to you and me...
Please consider entering the competition as below:
Tell me in 25 words your thoughts or additions to
the above article.
The first 10 responders will receive a pack of 3 new
St Dalfour all natural and cane sugar free fruit

CONGRATULATIONS ON LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Our NZ Associate, Alison Johnston, has received a Lions Life
Membership Award; the highest NZ Lions award presented in honour
of New Zealand's only (so far) International President, Lloyd
Morgan, in the 1979/80 Lions year. He declined to accept a
substantial personal gift in recognition of his service but NZ Lions
were determined that his year would receive permanent and lasting
recognition and a charitable trust was set up in his name.
I was very honoured to receive this award, along with a very long-
time fellow Lion, Garth England, at Changeover this year.

LIAM’S WORLD (brought to you by)
True story
Liam’s young daughter told her father that she
had to tell the class on the following day what
her father did for a job.
So, Liam told her.
When Liam arrived home from work the
following day, he asked his daughter whether
she had told the class what he did?
She replied ‘Yes Daddy I told them you were a
Shoplifter!’
Lim nearly fell over and calmly corrected his
daughter, ‘my dear I’m a shop F-I-T-T-E-R!!!’
A little short
Liam went into a bar and orders seven shots of
Jamieson Irish Whiskey and one Guinness.
The barman lines up shots and goes to get the
Guinness.
When he comes back with the pint, all seven
shots are gone.
The barman says: “Wow! You sure drank those
fast.”
Liam explains: "You would drink fast too if
you had what I have.”
The barman asks: “What do you have?”
Liam reached into his pocket and says: “Fifty
cents!”
Capital
Did you hear about the population of Ireland’s
Capital? It’s Dublin!
Faith healer
Paddy asks, “Liam, how did you get on at the
faith healer meeting last night?”
Liam replies, “He was absolute rubbish. Even
the fella in the wheelchair got up and walked
out !”

MARK’S CONNECTION COLUMN
Hello Fellow Loins,
The Embassy of the United States of America in Australia invited
me to attend a speech on the U.S.-Australia relationship by
The Honorable Michael R. Pompeo
Secretary of State of the United States of America
On Sunday August 4, 2019 I was privileged and honoured to be
invited to hear an address given by Mr Michael Pompeo at the
State Library in Sydney.
I was amongst former Prime Ministers, diplomats and
businessmen as he spoke on how he wanted to get down here to as it was important for him as
American diplomacy depends of showing up and talking with your closest friends, the unbreakable
alliance between our two countries, and how the American side sees this developing.
He told a story about a man who epitomized what our friendship is all about here. Our Prime Minister
had told it to President Trump last year, he said it’s so good he felt he needed to share it with us. It was
about Leslie Allen, but everyone in his brigade called him Bull. Bull was an Australian who carried a
stretcher during World War II and won admiration for fearlessly rescuing comrades wounded on the
battlefield. In 1943, American and Australian troops were fighting side by side in what was then the
Territory of New Guinea, taking very heavy casualties. That didn’t stop Bull. Bull had delivered 12
wounded Americans to safety, even carrying them on his back. Secretary Pompeo said that’s what I call
showing up for friends. Bull received America’s Silver Star.
Secretary Pompeo said we are encouraging some of our best and brightest towards the success in this
region, too. He announced the creation of four Indo-Pacific Fulbright Scholarships two funded by the
United States and two funded by Australia to conduct research on the Indo-Pacific region.
He spoke about helping our neighbours secure their economic independence. He spoke how Australia
has supported the US efforts to enforce the UN Security Council resolutions to have the opportunity to
take nuclear threat away from the entire world. He spoke on economics, terrorism and the importance
keeping the waters open saying that we can work together to keep all shipping lanes open, even those
that are further away in the Strait of Hormuz.
It was a wonderful opportunity for me to be part of this event and one I will always remember.
Take care everyone
