Are you a good detective? The Vocabulary Constabulary needs your help. This is all you have to do. You can often detect the meaning of a word by reading it in context, that is, by reading the other words around it

in a piece of text. Find the page, article or paragraph in TPP and then detect the word or phrase that solves the clue to its meaning. The number of letters and the starting letter of the solution are in brackets after each clue.

Penguins

Penguins are aquatic, flightless birds that are highly adapted to life in the water. their tuxedo-

like appearance is known as countershading and helps keep them safe in the water. Penguins

lost the ability to fly millons of years ago, but their powerful fins and streamlined bodies make

them accomplished swimmers They have been nicknamed the flying torpedos. they are the

fastest swiming and deepest diving species of bird Penguins are found exclusively in the

Southern Hemisphere where they catch their food underwater and raise their young on land.

The emperor penguin is the largest of all penguins at about 1.15 metres tall. they live on the

inhospitable Antartic ice and employ a number of tactics to deal with the incredably harsh

environment.

They huddle together to excape the wind and conserve warmth with individuals taking turns

to move to the group’s warm, toasty interior. once a penguin has warmed up it will move to

the perimetre so that others can get protection from the icey elements The female lays a

single egg and promptly disappears on a two month hunting trip, leaving the daddy penguin

to keep the egg warm by balanceing it on his feet and covering it with a feathered skin called

a brood pouch The males get nothing to eat for this period and are starving when the females

arrive back with food, which they regurgitate for the chicks. the males can finaly go to sea and

catch a well-earned fish for dinner
