The programme for Jamaica Festival as prepared by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commissian for celebration of the nation's 19th Anniversary of Independence

The Cultural Commission and its associated Cultural Committees

in all parishes have prepared a 10-day Festival programme,

July 25 to Independence Day, Monday August 3, 1981, for the celebration of Jm.aica*s 19th anniversary of Independence,

cities, towns and villages will be fully involved, Major

performances previously confined to the Corporate Area qf

Kingston and St, Andrew will be duplicated in all parish

capitals and festivities previously concentrated in parish

capitals will be duplicated in all other towns and mjor

village centres.

Major events in the parishes will include a compot3ite

exhibition in each capital of art, crafts, culinary w t

products and cultural heritage exhibits, parish bandwagpn

shows, 71Mell~ go rounu (shows featuring hundreds of perfor-

mers in dance, m i c and speech), dramatic presentations,

Iadependence Day Gala i n the capitals and Independence night

street concerts and street dances, Many parishes will,as a

new feature of their celebrations isaaugurate gala mayors balls

to highten the festivities and eventually to raise funds to

support artistic activities, *

As a departure from previous years the celebrations will

0fficiedJ.y open with Independence Thanksgiving Services in

a l l churohes throughout the Islaad on Sunday,. July 26, which with the approval of the Jamaica C o w i l of Churches has been

declared Independence 'Pharkegiving gunday. The theme Tor

worship has been developed by the C&hncil and i~ in ciXVulati0n.

National and Parish Leaders are being encouraged to join in

these thanksgiving services in their Enreas. The churches are

enthus~CiomAly going beyond these services to arrange @3pel

music pmgmmma an an iaterdenond4ationak basig in mang parts

The appeal t o the private sector has received encouraging

response. Most parishes haw had the i r limited funds aug-

mented by gross contributions of from $1,000 t o $26,000 t o

a t o t a l of about $120,000. The Comsllislsion pledges cash

awards fo r national whmrs of about $100,000 and sponsor-

ships of about $220,000. The response is most encouraging

but the constraints of organising time and the enthusiastic

response fo r participation so great, that it is taxing the

management s k i l l s i n the leadership of the movement beyond

reasonable levels.

Parliament should note tha t the Comndssion has only one

employed raember of s t a f f per parlsh - a cul tural organiser,

and about 50 other employed workers inclusive of support s t a f f .

Note should also be taken of the fac t that the whole CoaasLssion

of 30 members including its part-time Emcutive Chaimn are

voluntary workers and that a l l members of the Parish Cultural

Cocrrmittees and the msny National Committees a re a l l voluntary

workers. This is a very important fac t t o note as a large

number of people believe otherwise, and often t r e a t these

voluntary workers as i f they are on the government's payroll.

We owe them our thanks f o r restoring the laudeble Jamaican

t rad i t ion of voluntary work i n the service of the nation.

Reggae Sunsplash

This Commission has acquired the r ights by licence from the

owners of t h i s brand name to produce Reggae Sunsplash i n

Montego Bay, from August 4 - 8, 1981, as a Tribute t o the

reggae super star the Hon. Robert Marley, O.H.

Plans are proceeding t o make t h b an internat ioaal popular

music fes t iva l , highlighting the Jamalcan reggae idiom.

The Corrmdseion is working i n cooperation with the Touriet

industry and others, and hope t o give the City of Moatego Bay

a boost i n its swnner tour i s t business while taking a major

international a r t i s t i c exposition t o Western Jamaica.

The copy of the Calendar of National and Parish Events, July 25

t o August 3, 1981, is attached.
