UWAF Food Solidarity Conference 2012“Spijs voor Onderwijs”
Investment in human capital through better Nutrition
World Food Day 2012 - Agricultural cooperatives - Key to feeding the worldTuesday, October 16th - 7AM, Buitenhof 47, 2513 AH Den Haag
Why “Spijs voor Onderwijs”How come there are so many people suffering from hunger and malnutrition while the world produces enough food that could feed us all?
Food security it is not only about whether there is enough food available, but also whether people have the means and access to adequate quantities and quality of food. The unequal global distribution of food contributes to the increased vulnerability especially of children in the developing countries.
Worldwide, there are an estimated 925 million people suffering from hunger. That’s nearly 1 in 7 people. About 2 billion people suffer from malnutrition. For instance, in Asia more than 70% of the children are malnourished, while in Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean it is estimated at 26% and 4% respectively (FAO).
The problem of malnutrition affects the children’s physical and mental development, and their ability to perform well in school and acquire the necessary life skills. The inability to address this issue using innovative, collective and sustainable solutions will continue to undermine the socio-economic growth in the developing countries. UWAF strongly believes that investing in the nutritional wellbeing of children is one of the most effective ways of contributing to productive human capital, leading to the socio-economic development of societies.
That’s why it is very vital for UWAF to invest in this school feeding program “Spijs voor Onderwijs”, that aims at improving children’s nutritional status for better school performance.
The aim of the Conference:• Increase public awareness on the impact of malnutrition on children’s
development and school performance;
• Promote the transfer of knowledge and technologies to the developing countries, in particular African countries, and to strengthen the (inter)national solidarity in the struggle to end hunger, malnutrition and poverty and draw attention to the missing link between knowledge and innovation in food and agricultural development;
• Fundraising: The proceeds of this Solidarity Conference will entirely go to the school feeding program “Spijs voor Onderwijs” in order to reduce malnutrition among primary school children in Kiyumba-Rwanda in an effort to improve their school performance.
