Wait for the promise of the Father 1

Jesus took Peter, James and John and led them to a high mountain. While praying there He was transfi gured. “His face shone as the sun.” Jesus had many times shown His disciples His Divine Power, but now He showed them His divine nature. Moses and Elias (Elijah) appeared with Him to dispel the Jewish fallacy that Jesus was one of the prophets. He revealed Himself to be King over the prophets who were His servants.

If Jesus, the Head of the Body [the Church], was transfi gured, then we who are members of His Body will also be transfi gured with Him. The dazzling light that shown through Christ on Mount Tabor is not just something

that happened in the past. It is a window through which we can look to see the reality of the Kingdom of God not only in Christ but also in us. As we are incorporated into Christ through faith and the sacraments, we are gradually transformed into His likeness. This is our personal transfi guration in Christ. We are not just earthen vessels of clay subject to the universal law of death and corruption. These earthen vessels bear a “great treasure” as St. Paul states.

They can become not only spirit-bearing, but God-bearing, pervaded by God’s presence. They are called to share in the eternal glory of God. It was our own human nature which was fi lled with divine glory at the Transfi guration. It was our own human nature which was made Godlike and partook of God’s glory. Consider this against the background of people who claim that life is meaningless.

The divine light did not merely shine around Christ, His very fl esh was afl ame with it. The image of God in us, which had been darkened by the sin of Adam, was once again glowing in the human nature of Jesus. Transfi gured and sanctifi ed by the grace of God, this human body of ours can indeed become an icon of man deifi ed, transfi gured and glowing with the light of the Holy Trinity. It is for this reason that many Orthodox theologians consider the Feast of the Transfi guration as the day of the celebration of the deifi cation (theosis) of human nature in Christ.

TROPARIONO Christ our God, at the time of your Transfi guration on the Mount, You showed your disciples as much of your glory as they could hold. Through the prayers of the mother of God, let your eternal light shine also upon us sinners. O Giver of Light, glory to You! ^

THE DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY – AUGUST 15

The Holy Scriptures tell us that when our Lord was dying on the Cross, He saw His mother and the disciple John and said to the Virgin Mary, “Woman, behold your son!” and to John, “Behold your mother!” (John 19:25-27). From that hour, the Apostle took care of the Theotokos in his own home.

Along with the biblical reference in Acts 1:14 that confi rms that the Virgin Mary was with the Holy Apostles on the day of Pentecost, the tradition of the Church holds that she remained in the home of the Apostle John in Jerusalem, continuing a ministry in word and deed. At the time of her death, the disciples of our Lord who were preaching throughout the world returned to Jerusalem to see the Theotokos. Except for the Apostle Thomas, all of them including the Apostle Paul were gathered together at her bedside. Pag. 3

At the moment of her death, Jesus Christ himself descended and carried her soul into heaven.

Following her repose, the body of the Theotokos was taken in procession and laid in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane. When the Apostle Thomas arrived three days after her repose and desired to see her body, the tomb was found to be empty. The bodily assumption of the Theotokos was confi rmed by the message of an angel and by her appearance to the Apostles.LET US KNOW LOOK AT A DESCRIPTION

OF THE ICON FOR THIS FEAST:The Icon of the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos shows her on her deathbed surrounded by the Apostles. Christ is standing in the center looking at His mother. He is holding a small child clothed in white representing the soul of the Virgin Mary. With His golden garments, the angels above His head, and the mandorla (oval image behind Christ depicting His divine glory), He accepts her soul into heaven.

Together with the Apostles are several bishops (4) and women. The bishops traditionally represented are James, the brother of the Lord; Timothy; Heirotheus; and Dionysius the Areopagite. They are shown wearing episcopal vestments. The women are members of the church in Jerusalem.

Mary. Standing over His mother is Christ holding her most pure soul. Above Christ the gates of heaven stand open, ready to receive the Mother of God.

This great Feast of the Church a nd t he icon c e l e b r a t e s a f u n d a m e n t a l t e a c h i n g o f our faith - the R e s u r re c t ion of the body. In the case of the T h e o t o k o s , th is has been

accomplished by the divine will of God. Thus, this Feast is a feast of hope - hope in Resurrection and life eternal. Like those who gathered around the body of the Virgin Mary, we gather around our departed loved ones and commend their souls into the hands of Christ. As we remember those who have reposed in the faith before us and have passed on into the communion of the Saints, we prepare ourselves to one day be received into the new life of the age to come.

We also affi rm through this Feast as we journey toward our heavenly abode that the Mother of God intercedes for us. Through Christ she has become the mother of all of the children of God, embracing us with divine love.

The commemoration of the Dormition of the Theotokos and the preparation for the Feast begin on August 1 with a period of fasting. A strict fast is followed on most of the days (no meat, dairy, oil, or wine), with the exceptions of fi sh on the Feast of the Transfi guration (August 6) and the day of the Dormition. Oil and Wine are allowed on Saturdays and Sundays. On the weekdays

before the Feast, Paraklesis services are held in most parishes. These consist of the Great Paraklesis and the Small Paraklesis, both services of supplication and prayer for the intercessions of the Theotokos.

APOLYTIKIONIn birth, you preserved your virginity; in death, you did not abandon the world, O Theotokos. As mother of life, you departed to the source of life, delivering our souls from death by your intercessions.

KONTAKIONNeither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life. ̂

What a successful year we’ve had! Even though the year was slowly coming to an end, our youth had a very busy spring. On May 18th, a group of GOYANS attended

the Indoor Olympics at Perth Amboy. A fun and exciting day resulted in our youth winning a total of seven medals in events such as ping pong, Wii Just Dance, checkers, and badminton. A few weeks later on Memorial Day weekend, about 35 of o u r G OYA N S t r a v e l l e d to Monmouth University to compete in track and fi eld events. After a successful weekend, we earned a total of 16 medals. This resulted in a 4th place overall win for Westfi eld!The following weekend, our G OYA Ns c a me toget he r once more to volunteer at our Greek Fest. All of their hard work and dedication is much appreciated! Our GOYANs came together one last time on June 8th to support the outreach committee’s car wash to raise

money Lainie’s Angels. We had a very successful day, raising over $600.Thank you to the outreach committee for organizing this fun and profi table event! Last but not least, I would like to thank and say farewell all of our GOYA seniors for all of their dedication to our youth. They have been excellent role models for our younger youth members and they will be missed very much next year. ^

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Now is time to enjoy the summer, to decompress, get some sun, refl ect on the past busy year, and to anticipate the New Year which begins in September. I would like

to fi rst of all acknowledge all of our youth groups and their accomplishments from Sunday School , GOYA (YHT), Greek dancing, Sights and Sounds, Athletics, Olympics, Greek School, etc. We are so proud of our kids and we continue to support and help them grow in our faith through fellowship.Next I must admit that our Philoptochos continues to impress as I have witnessed fi rst-hand their highly successful fashion show. The Ladies do great work and we must all continue to support their efforts. The much anticipated Greek Fest 2013 has come and gone. All the volunteers, committee members, advertisers, sponsors, vendors and patrons all helped make it a continued success. We are already planning for Greek Fest 2014 as it has become a local institution.

For the first time, I am proud to announce that we are donating a portion of the admissions proceeds to local causes. $2,000.00 has been donated for both the Westfi eld EMS and the Mountainside Specialized Children’s Hospital.These two worthy organizations have been added to our ever expanding Outreach Program at Holy Trinity. Please mark your calendars for the Greek Fest Appreciation Cookout to be held after church services on September 8, 2013, from 12 noon - 3 pm on the front lawn of the church. All Greek Fest volunteers, their families, committee members, donors, and vendors are invited.I also want to thank my fellow parish council members for their commitment, dedication, and full participation this past year. Thus far it has been a meaningful and productive year. The various committees will meet over the summer as we continue to work on improving all aspects of Holy Trinity. This past May the parish faced the sad event of saying goodbye to one of the pillars at Holy Trinity. Dino Genakos will be missed as he took his repose in the Lord just before the Greek Fest on May 2. ^

The women of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society continua lly demonstrate their love and compassion

for those in need. I am pleased to inform you that because of the outstanding assistance offered by you, the stewards of the Philoptochos, the sum of $1,623,640 has been nationally disbursed in the year 2012 through our various funds and special drives. This is an amazing fi gure as it is the largest amount ever donated by Philoptochos. You have truly demonstrated that you are indeed “doers of the Word”. I am especially happy to see so many of our younger Philoptochos members getting more involved with our various Philoptochos outreach programs and ministries and I thank you for your devoted service to Christ and His Church and wish you and your loved ones peace, grace and love.Plans were presented for continued fundraising efforts by National Board members and Philoptochos Chapters through the Aid to Greece and Cyprus Campaign as they face enormous fi nancial turmoil. All Philoptochos Chapters have scheduled Sunday, September 22, 2013 as “National Philoptochos Fellowship Sunday.” On this day, Philoptochos Chapters will host their parish coffee/refreshment hour following the Divine Liturgy and raise funds for this cause.

We are very proud of all our graduating youth at Holy Trinity. Every year Philoptochos awards $700.00

scholarships to our very deserving students. We are blessed to have on our Philoptochos Board Barbara Manos who very diligently conducts our scholarship awards, together with her committee, for the high school scholarship recipients.Three of our scholarships donated yearly by Paul Stappas for the Angela Stappas award and two from Mr. Stephen Gussis for the Stephen Gussis and Violett Gussis awards. We congratulate the following scholarship recipients this year as they continue their college education; Nicholas Constantine, Stephanie John, Emmanuel (Manos) Rousakis, Dina Savva, Katie Tencza, and Christopher Wolff.

Proceeds from the event are strictly used for organizations who work with children in medical crisis.Saturday, October 26th - Annual Saint Basil Academy visitation, Garrison, New York - The children of Saint Basil Academy always look forward to seeing the ladies of Philoptochos during the visit and we are treated to a wonderful ‘teaching’ service in the Chapel by Fr. Constantine Sitaras, followed by a luncheon.Saturday, February 8th - Annual Saint Michael’s Home for the Aged Visitation, Yonkers, NY - The Saint Michael’s Visitation is fi lled with love and compassion, as we take time out of our busy schedules to participate, alongside our beloved elderly, in a Divine Liturgy, offered by His Grace Bishop Andonios. This year, His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos plans to join us on this visitation. Chapters offer donations to the facility, as St. Michael’s Home for the Aged is not offi cially part of the National Philoptochos Commitment Program. ^
