A FRATERNAL NEWSLETTER October 2017 The Public Relations Voice Jim L. Cain Sr. Imperial Chief Rabban Public Relations Chairman Yours in the faith, A Message From Your Public Relations Chairman Dear Fellow Nobles, It’s a very busy and exciting time for our Shriners organizations. Signature events are coming up soon, PR campaigns are underway, and many membership events and initiatives are taking place. Our signature events are very important to the success of both Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children ® , helping to raise funds and increase public awareness and name recognition in an exciting and engaging way. These events always generate tremendous media coverage, and also provide an opportunity for Shriners to gather and share the fraternity’s story with potential new members. The 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open will be held Oct. 30-Nov. 5 at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Several of the leading names in golf will be participating. In addition, several of our patients will be on hand to share their remarkable stories, and act as standard bearers. We are grateful for their invaluable contribution to this event. We also want to acknowledge our remarkable volunteers, including the many Shriners and their family members, for dedicating their time and energy to the tournament year after year. Your commitment helps ensure the success of this important event. The East-West Shrine Game ® is also coming up soon, and is another great opportunity to raise awareness of our fraternity and philanthropy. What could be better than all-star college football in January – in Florida? We look forward to seeing everyone at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on Jan. 20. October is National Bullying Prevention Month; our #CutTheBull campaign is part of that effort. While bullying is a problem facing all children, those with disabilities are said to be twice as likely to be bullied, and our program seeks to raise awareness and provide resources to help stop this painful societal problem. Our Greenville hospital took a noteworthy, innovative approach this year, creating a book, Cut it Out! The book tells the stories of nine Greenville hospitals patients, using their own words, and was illustrated by local elementary school students. It’s available for pre-order on amazon.com at http://amzn.to/2gDCuLI. Turning to membership, there is a lot to discuss. The 31st annual membership seminar was held earlier this month, and was quite successful. If your temple did not send representatives, please consider attending next year. Representatives from 97 temples, 14 Masonic Grand Lodges, the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction, Daughters of the Nile, Ladies’ Oriental Shrine of North America and DeMolay International participated in several activities, including networking exercises and structured presentations. Topics included improving Masonic relations, prospect relations with the MDS and I AM R U programs and strengthening membership efforts. We congratulate Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder, his committee and the membership development staff for a tremendous meeting. The I AM R U membership referral program, which depends on each of you to provide names of prospective candidates, is off to a great start. Ninety temples have participated, providing more than 800 referrals. We thank everyone who is working to improve our membership numbers, and ask you to continue your efforts. The strength of our fraternity and philanthropy depend on the commitment of every one of our fellow members. In terms of membership success, I want to especially acknowledge some efforts of our international temples and Shrine Clubs. Mabuhay Shriners of the Philippines had 284 new creations at their recent ceremonial. Also, representatives from nine countries attended a ceremonial in Cyprus (Emirat Shriners) for 10 new nobles, which was held following the annual outreach clinic on the island, bringing together both aspects of our organization and illustrating the global reach of both our fraternity and philanthropy. This year, 285 children were seen in the clinic over a four day period. I also want to acknowledge the El Salvador Shrine Club (Abou Saad Shriners), which recently held a charity run for hundreds of participants to benefit efforts to help local children, especially those with burn injuries. Their efforts were acknowledged by a local government official. Great things are happening – thank you for all you do to support Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Don’t Forget to Tune-in to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and Shriners Hospitals for Children has teamed up with award-winning actor and former patient, RJ Mitte, to help combat bullying.

Overall, reports show that bullying among children in the United States is dropping. However, according to the National Bullying Prevention Center, kids with disabilities are still twice as likely to experience bullying.

As part of the national #CutTheBull campaign, free resources for patients and the public are available at cutthebull.org. The materials, including public service announcements, a social media challenge, tip cards and an anti-bullying ambassador tool kit are designed to help kids and adults #SeeTheAbility in all people.

“Growing up, my disability made me a target for bullies,” said Mitte, who has cerebral palsy. “I was harassed, knocked down and even had my hand broken. Now, I have an opportunity to give a voice to people with disabilities and promote acceptance.”

Like Mitte, many Shriners Hospitals patients have scars or physical differences that put them at greater risk for being bullied. As part of their concern for the well-being of their patients, staff at Shriners Hospitals offer various programs to help patients build social skills and increase self-confidence and self-esteem.

The #CutTheBull public service announcement featuring Mitte and other Shriners Hospitals for Children patients is available for viewing at vimeo.com/139286381.
