Dear Badin Alumni and Friends,

For the last past several you have heard a lot about STEM in the news. The demand for STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) has grown at the high school level as the need for highly qualified workers in each of these areas has increased. At Badin, we have had a strong science and math program for many years. The foundation that students receive in both subject areas prepares them well for their college courses. However, we continue to evaluate and update our math and science curriculum on a yearly basis to ensure our students are getting the most up-to-date material presented to them.

One area of STEM we have expanded is in the area of technology. The number of employment opportunities in the technology field has grown considerably and will continue to be an area of high demand. To better prepare our students, we have expanded our freshmen technology course from a semester to a full year. This will allow all students the opportunity to be exposed to essential concepts. In addition, we have added courses that are of great interest to students and will prepare our graduates for college, programs and careers in the tech arena. This year we offered courses in Robotics, Game Theory and Design, Programming and Applied Technology, and Business and Technology. All of these computer-based courses have been huge successes and many will be expanded to offer a second year.

This year we also added the final piece of our STEM program – Engineering. Project Lead the Way is a nationally recognized engineering program. We were fortunate to be accepted into this program and our students are benefiting as a result. Over 80 students are taking the first course – Introduction to Engineering Design. Next school year we will add Principals of Engineering to our curriculum. This course will build on the previous course to further expose the students to various engineering theories and problem solving activities. We are currently evaluating the third and fourth year options available through Project Lead the Way. After four years, students in the engineering track will be well prepared for their college engineering courses. We are excited to be able to offer this program to our current and future students.

As you can see, Badin High School continues to provide educational opportunities for students with a wide variety of interests. We will continue to strive to profoundly shape the way students Think, Achieve, Serve and Lead.

If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your support and God bless you and your family.

Badin High School continues to stay ahead of the technology curve to keep its students on top of 21st century expectations.

“Students realize we live in a technology-driven society,” said David Gretz, who has been teaching tech courses at Badin for 14 years. “They like the ability to explore new advances and the new opportunities that technology offers across the board.”

Badin added Robotics and Game Theory and Design courses for 2014-15 … and enough students are interested in continuing those studies, Gretz noted, that there will be Robotics II and Game Theory and Design II in 2015-16.

This year, Badin expanded its Integrated Technology class –a required freshman course -- from one semester to a full year in order to make sure students were getting a strong tech foundation. Cindy Jasper-Parisey has joined the staff as the freshman tech teacher.

Badin has also added an engineering class through the national Project Lead the Way program – and will add more classes such that there will be at least four Engineering courses, and more in the pipeline, by the time the Class of 2018 graduates.

“Engineering has always been important,” said Emily Ferguson, Badin’s engineering teacher, “and now schools are getting students on that track earlier. We’re teaching the applicable skills and how we integrate those; how that applies to our lives.”

Ferguson has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Evansville and previously worked at General Electric for five years.

“This (Intro to Engineering Design) class has come together well,” she said of having 80 students in the first-year program. “The students are learning a lot of good skills – how to problem-solve, how to make decisions. I know a lot of them are looking forward to next year’s class, Principles of Engineering.”

Badin turned a corner classroom on the top floor into an Engineering lab over the summer; originally, it had been a Home Economics classroom. That’s how things have changed over the years.

“The thing I like about the new upper level classes,” Gretz said, “is that the students are still talking about the things they did in class as they walk out the door at the end of the bell. They’re engaged in what they’re doing, and that’s a great.”

As for the full-year Integrated Technology class for freshmen, Gretz said, “If you look at it, we’ve gone from typing to keyboarding to word processing. Now you’ve got computers and iPads and enhanced standards to meet. That means the students have to increase their skills and their ability to meet those standards.”

A new advanced placement class, Computer Science Principles, is on the national drawing board for the 2016-17 school year.

“That’s going to be an important class,” Gretz said. “I am pursuing all of the things we need to do in order to offer that the first year it is available.”

That will be yet another advance in Badin’s efforts to stay on top of technology.

“We are ahead of the curve, without a doubt,” Gretz said. “We have the widest selection of technology courses of any school in the area.”

They are brothers in life and brothers in law enforcement, and for Rick Bucheit ’87 (right) and Craig Bucheit ’94 (left), it works out just fine.

“Our dad was a fireman, so in terms of public service and public safety, we grew up with that,” said Craig Bucheit, newly named Hamilton Chief of Police. “That was part of our lives.”

Rick Bucheit went into the Army following his graduation from Badin, and was in the Military Police during his four years of service. “When I got out of the Army, I knew I was going to be a cop somewhere,” said Rick, who was recently promoted to lieutenant in the Butler County Sheriff ’s Office. “Working here has been a very satisfying experience.”

Craig credits his older brother for paving the way for him in the Hamilton Police Department.

In the mid-1990s, Rick was working in corrections in the BCSO, and Craig was taking college classes, uncertain what his future held. Rick was taking the Hamilton Police Department exam … and encouraged Craig to do the same.

When the results came out, Rick had finished first on the test … and Craig was 21st.

Rick got a call from then Chief Deputy, now Sheriff, Richard Jones, who knew of the test results and that Rick might take the position with Hamilton in order to leave his post in the corrections facility.

Jones had a road patrol opportunity in Liberty Township for Bucheit, and that convinced Rick to stay with the BCSO.

That opened up an opportunity for Craig Bucheit to join the HPD, as he was the last officer hired into the ranks off of that test.

‘You think of the gravity of that decision (by Rick),” Craig said. “I was the last person hired off of that list. It’s hard to say what would have happened if Rick had decided to take a job in Hamilton. The rest is kind of history.”

Both credit their years at Badin High School – where, among other things, they served as co-captains of the football team – for having a big impact on their lives.

“The biggest takeaway from Badin is the community aspect,” Craig said. “You still have all of those connections. I value the relationships very much. The values and beliefs I gained from Catholic education are so important. I find myself relying on them more and more as time goes on.

“I’ve also come to appreciate the enormous sacrifice my parents made to provide their four children a Catholic education,” he added. “I know now that sacrifice was an investment and that investment has paid a lifetime of dividends for all of us.”

When it comes to Badin, said Rick, “the word I think of is ‘family.’ You are really a part of a family at Badin. You feel a part of something. You feel comfortable just stopping in to say hello to people – it feels like home. It was a great experience.”

Rick is now the Administrative Services Division commander after serving as a road patrol deputy, a detective and sergeant in investigations, and even leaving the

Catholic Schools Week Inspiring Alumni Speak at Badin Two guest speakers highlighted the all-school assembly that concluded Catholic Schools Week at Badin High School on Friday, Jan. 30. Dr. Julie Berry Luebbers ‘90, (left) a Spanish professor at Thomas More College, and Abby Fritsch ‘12 (right), a junior at Xavier University, spoke of their overseas service efforts in Guatemala and Uganda, respectively. They flank Gina Helms, Badin’s director of Campus Ministry, who pointed out that the value of service is the opportunity to give back to the world around you.

organization for three years to work at Matandy Steel.

“The people at Matandy were great to work with,” said Rick, who has been back with the BCSO for a decade. “But when law enforcement is in your blood, it’s in your blood. The Sheriff ’s Office welcomed me back with open arms. The sheriff is a great guy to work for.”

Craig Bucheit was not “planning” to be the police chief of Hamilton, but has taken advantage of opportunities as they presented themselves during his law enforcement career.

“I love what I do,” he said. “I have a passion for police work, and I have a passion for the community. Helping people and solving problems. That’s what police work is. That’s what we do.”

Craig has been a detective, worked undercover, been the public information officer, patrol shift supervisor and held various other responsibilities during his time at HPD.

“It’s all about building a better Hamilton,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to give back. I wake up every day excited to come in here. What I do makes a difference. That’s what drives me.”

They were both promoted to their new responsibilities the same week in December of 2014 – happy for each other, excited by the new challenges.

“There’s a lot of interaction between the two agencies,” Craig said. “The Sheriff ’s Office has always been a great partner with us. And of course, it’s nice having a familiar voice at the other end of the phone sometimes if you need it.”

Both have stories about arrests they made, people they encountered, coming back a decade or more later to thank them for basically saving their lives.

“That’s the part about making a difference,” Craig said. “It’s not always apparent every day. But years later, people coming back to say, ‘You saved my life.’ We may never know the results of some of the things we do. But what police officers do is noble.”

Craig and his wife, the former Angie Briggs ‘95, are the parents of four children. Angie is a guidance counselor at Badin. Rick is married to the former Jennifer Stagg ’87, who is the director of creative services and marketing for Cox Media Group Ohio. They are the parents of two children, both Badin grads – Jack ‘11 and Paige ‘13.

Mulcahey Gym Rededication Bill Mulcahey ‘63 was more than a teacher at Badin – he was a mentor, coach, and leader. It is because of the indelible mark he left on Badin High School that we chose to honor his memory by naming the gymnasium, the William Mulcahey Gymnasium. On January 23, 2015, Badin rededicated the gym in honor of the 30th anniversary if Bill’s death. On hand for the celebration were his wife, Carol, Bill’s children and grandchildren, friends and many former Badin faculty members who worked with Bill.

annual FUNDWhat’s the Annual Fund?

The Badin Annual Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at Badin High School. Without it, Badin would struggle to survive. Tuition does not cover the full cost of educating each student. This cost is much higher than what we can reasonably charge in tuition—and what Badin families can afford. The Badin Annual Fund helps fund this tuition gap so that the Badin tradition can continue as we profoundly shape the way students Think, Achieve, Serve and Lead. This is why Badin depends on the Annual Fund each year. The most significant contribution any of us can make to Badin is to the Annual Fund.

Mark O’Hara enjoys movies, and for the Badin High School English teacher, his love of film has played a key role in a major life achievement – a PhD in Educat iona l Leadership.

O’Hara received his doctoral degree from Miami University on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 after a determined effort over the past five years.

“It’s a good feeling of a c c o m p l i s h m e n t ,” O’Hara said, quickly

adding, “It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”

For his dissertation, O’Hara dissected six films and used the philosophies of French educator and historian Michel Foucault to look at how the films portrayed the power relationships among the major players and the mentally ill. The dissertation is entitled: “Foucault and Film: Critical Theories and Representations of Mental Illness.”

“I’ve always been a big fan of movies,” O’Hara said, “and I hope to make a difference in my dissertation with how people, especially educators, view persons with mental illness.

“Watching a movie, you have a much more visceral and physical experience than when we read something,” he said. “There’s a stigma toward mental illness and how it is portrayed that stays with you in a much more embodied way through film.”

O’Hara began his PhD work in 2009 – though in reality, he’d begun those efforts more than 25 years earlier, after he earned his Master’s degree in English from Miami.

“I was in the PhD program for one year at Miami (in the early 1980s), but then life happened,” O’Hara chuckled of having married his wife, Karen, and being the father of two children. Both of them are Badin High grads -- Billy, in the Class of 2003, and Kristin, from the Class of 2006. “Getting a doctorate was always in the back of my mind. My mother always said that education was the only thing people can’t take away from you.”

When O’Hara started the latest PhD effort in 2009, at the age of 50, he said, “I made a vow to myself that I was going to finish the degree.”

O’Hara teaches sophomore English at Badin and is a nationally published poet as well. He has also presented his doctoral research at a number of major workshops and conferences in recent years.

“There’s such a lack of understanding and care about mental illness,” O’Hara said. “Something on the order of 80 percent of teenagers who have mental illness don’t seek help. … You hate to see everyone medicated. At the same time, you understand the impact of medicine.”

While working on his doctorate, O’Hara also had the opportunity to teach a one-semester course at Miami as an adjunct professor, “Media illusions of disability,” which he said “was right up my alley.”

“I’ve always respected education,” O’Hara said. “I consider myself still learning, always learning, because there are so many things still to learn. It’s never too late to finish a degree, and it’s never too late to learn and become a better citizen.”

O’Hara is in his 16th year at Badin High School after teaching in public education for 15 years prior to joining the Badin staff. He graduated from Catholic high school in New Jersey and did his undergraduate work there as well before coming to Miami for graduate school.

“I’m really pleased to be at Badin,” O’Hara said. “I can talk about my faith and try to be a good role model as an educator. It’s a very good learning atmosphere here.”

Scowden and juniors Berkely, Gabby Geigle, Shelby Lamping, Rachel Riley and Taylor Smith.

Senior Emily Henson and junior Katie Pohlman also saw significant action, and were joined by sophomores Lampe, Visse, Sabrina Bernardo, Lindsey Brinck, Sam Lehker, Laurel Pendergest and Maddie Smith; and freshmen Maddie Curtner, Maddie Maccio and Jessica Meinzer on the championship roster. Junior Reilly Cooper and freshmen Hailee Feltner, Laura Lamermayer and Andrea Neyer were on the tournament traveling squad. Senior Erin Hanavan was the team manager.

Todd Berkely is 35-5-5 in two seasons as the Rams’ head coach, with two state titles to his credit. Badin girls soccer has won three state titles, earning the Division II crown in 2005. The Rams have played in a state-record nine state championship games. Also on the coaching lines this season were Bev Lindeman, Ken Murrell and Geoff Pohlman ’77.

TWICE as nice

Girls soccer captures repeat D-III state championship

Twice as nice is the way the Badin High girls’ soccer team looked at the 2014 season, as the Rams won their second consecutive Ohio Division III state championship.

The Rams finished the season with the best record in Badin girls’ soccer annals, 20-1-1, after a 13-1-1 regular season – losing only to a McNicholas team that subsequently captured the Division II state title.

Under a full moon at Columbus Crew Stadium in early November, Badin defeated Ottawa-Glandorf 2-0 in the state championship game. Senior Madi Kah and junior Malia Berkely marked the goals, one in each half, and BHS controlled the contest from start to finish. Sophomores Abby Lampe and Nicole Visse combined on the shutout in goal.

“I thought it was much harder to win the championship this year, but I had so much confidence in our kids,” head coach Todd Berkely said. “They knew the way to the prize. They were focused and played very well all year. … Every team we were playing had instant motivation, because they were playing the defending state champs.”

The Rams showed great resilience in the tournament. In seven games, they won three by shutout … but trailed 1-0 in the other four games. Badin won two games in overtime, knocking off Waynesville 3-2 in the sectional finals and Mariemont 2-1 in the district finals. Senior Morgan Langhammer notched both winning overtime goals.

Three Badin seniors are ticketed to play Division I women’s college soccer next season – Kah (Ohio University), Langhammer (Evansville) and Annika Pater (Eastern Kentucky). Junior Malia Berkely has also made a D-I college soccer commitment to Florida State University.

The Rams started a stress-tested group as they made their run to the championship – seniors Kah, Langhammer, Pater, Kate Bach and Brianna

For an entertaining look at Badin girls soccer, Dirk Q. Allen – the director of admissions and media relations at BHS, and the former sports editor of the JournalNews -- has written an excellent narrative of the program and its back-to-back

state titles. Entitled “The Family … Badin High Girls Soccer”, the book (276 pages) is available in print or e-book fashion on dirkqal-len.com and amazon.com, or in the Badin High School book store.

Berkely was named the Gatorade Ohio Girls Soccer Player of the Year, capping a season where she helped lead the Rams to their second consecutive Division III state championship. Berkely was also named Ms. Soccer Ohio by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association, encompassing all divisions; was the Division III Player of the Year in the state by the coaches, and was first team all-Ohio. In addition, Berkely was tagged

a prep All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and made an appearance in “Faces in the Crowd” in Sports Illustrated magazine’s Dec. 1 edition. Malia led the Rams with 34 points on 14 goals and six assists. She is part of the U.S. National U-18 soccer team that trains in California, and has committed to play college soccer at Florida State University. She is the daughter of Todd and Nicole Berkely of Liberty Township. Her father is Badin’s girls head soccer coach.

Badin High junior Malia Berkely wears No. 13 … and there’s definitely nothing unlucky about it.

TOP SCHOLARS Seniors Maggie Lakomy, Ben Harmon and Yola Randrianantoanina turned in outstanding performances on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) qualifying test taken in the fall of 2013, with scholarship dollars available for members of the Class of 2015. Lakomy and Harmon were both named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students, which meant that they finished in the top 5 percent nationally of all students taking the test.Randrianantoanina is one of just 1,600 African-American high school seniors (the top 1 percent) designated as semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which is also overseen by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. and based on PSAT results.

This winter, we celebrated the outstanding academic accomplishments of cur-rent eighth graders and welcomed 27 incoming freshmen into the Scholar-Leader Academy for the 2015-2016 school year. Students with the highest scores on the High School Placement Test are offered academic scholarships to Badin and are invited to join the Academy.

Now in its third year, the Scholar-Leader Academy is a leadership development program for students on academic scholarship. While in the Academy, Scholar-Leaders learn how to use their God-given talents to Serve God and Serve Others.

Next year will be the first year the Academy will have members from every class—freshmen through seniors. Our current juniors are the inaugural members of the Academy and have done an outstanding job representing Badin High School and setting the standard of excellence for the Academy.

This year Badin established a new leadership development curriculum for the Scholar-Leader Academy based on the groundbreaking work of leadership scholars James Kouzes and Barry Posner. The Student Leadership Challenge teaches stu-dents about the five practices of exemplary leadership in the context of their lives as students, sons, daughters, citizens and children of God. It reinforces the lesson

The Badin office of counseling services, with guidance counselors Angie Briggs Bucheit ’95 and Brion Treadway ‘97, continues to expand the opportunities for Badin students and their families. They held several “Coffee with the Counselors” sessions at True West coffee on Main Street and Miami University Downtown on High Street in Hamilton that were open to families to come discuss various issues. A college prep session for junior parents in February was a standing-room-only event in the Resource Center at Badin.“We’re doing more outreach because it’s important for both students and their parents to be well-versed on what goes on at Badin as well as in the planning for post-secondary education,” Bucheit said. “The issue of college preparation has really taken on a life of its own.”Bucheit hosted two Sunday College Application “parties” in the fall, and over the summer, faculty members Patrick Keating ’07 and Sara Brinck Thompson ’93 held a summer session for writing college application essays.Badin has recently added the Naviance online system that allows students, parents and counselors to track the prog-

ress of their students beginning in freshman year all the way up through the college application process. It’s a comprehensive system that also offers college application tips as well as testing practice for the ACT.“Naviance is working great – I like everything about it,” Treadway said. “It’s a wonderful tool to track students and their progress. There will be opportunities to integrate it even more with everyday student activities, but it’s a great way to stay on top of things.”As of March 23, the Class of 2015, which will graduate 119 students, has received more than $9 million in academic college scholarship offers -- with more coming in each week.

that we will all be called to lead at some point in our lives. The Scholar-Leader Academy aims to ensure these students are ready, willing and able to receive that call!

Scholar-Leaders are already putting these valuable lessons into practice: • They created and manage the Scholar-Leader Academy Tutoring Program for the benefit of all students at Badin. • They meet regularly with non-profit leaders in our community to learn more about their challenges and work together to find solutions. • They plan and perform group service projects.

More than 70 students will fill the ranks of the Scholar-Leader Academy in the 2015-2016 school year.
