The Sugar Land Police Department’s front parking lot at 1200 State Highway 6 is now available for citizens to complete online transactions.

Strangers often meet to complete transactions from online sites like Ebay, Craigslist and other classified listings – a practice that can result in assaults and thefts. Well lit, public places like police parking lots provide a safer option to finalize sales and purchases. The front parking lot at SLPD is easily accessible 24 hours per day. The new service is not intended for commercial operations or businesses, but rather private citizens who prefer a highly visible and public location to meet. The City of Sugar Land assumes no risk for fraudulent transactions and will not be able to verify whether items are stolen. The following tips are intended to help those completing transactions stay safe:

• Share the location of the intended meeting place with friend or family.

• Take a cell phone.

• Consider having friends in attendance.

• Sellers and buyers should trust their instincts.

• Be especially careful buying/selling high value items

• If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

During the year-end holidays, people are often busy, excited and sometimes a little bit careless. The

following holiday crime prevention recommendations may reduce risk factors and crime vulnerability according to American Crime Prevention Institutes.

At Home• Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house or apartment, even for a few minutes.

• Don’t display holiday gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Store gifts before you go away on a holiday trip.

• If you go out for the evening, turn on lights and a radio or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied.

• If you take a holiday trip away from your home, have some interior lights activated by an automatic timer. Have a neighbor or family member watch your house, shovel new snow, pick up the mail and newspaper and park his or her motor vehicle in your driveway from time to time.

• Participate in Operation Identification and mark your valuables with a unique identification number.

• Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax deductible, etc. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers, don’t give.

• Immediately after the holidays, mark new gifts with an identification number and record new serial numbers.

• Test your smoke detectors.

• Use only fire resistant ornaments on a holiday tree and make sure electric lights are in good working order. Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home.

• If you have house guests, advise them of your security precautions and make sure they follow them.• Avoid leaving boxes from purchases (especially TV’s, VCR’s, computer, etc.) out on the curb for trash pickup.

Shopping• Shop before dark if possible. Possibly coordinate shopping trips with a friend. Never park in an unlit lot or area, no matter how convenient it is.

• Lock your packages and gifts in your vehicle’s trunk. Keep you vehicle’s doors locked and windows closed.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check, credit card, or debit card when possible.

• To discourage purse-snatchers, don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your purchases delivered whenever practical.

• Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm. Keep a wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not a back trouser pocket.

• Teach children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if you become separated. They should never go into a parking lot alone.

Holiday Party Safety• Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests.

• Serve something to eat before serving alcoholic beverages. High protein foods stay in the stomach longer and slow absorption of alcohol into the system.

• Have alternative transportation for intoxicated persons. Don’t let guests drink and drive.

PickpocketsPickpockets like to take advantage of crowds in stores, on the street and on public transportation. Many work in teams with one distracting the victim while the other does the actual pickpocketing. Beware of anyone who jostles you. It may be accidental but, then again, it may not. For women who carry a purse, one that has a flap which folds over the opening and fastens at the bottom is

The Sheriff ’s Department’s format for reporting neighborhood incidents is detailed and thorough. It will be printed in two sections, a legend page, so you can see what the code is for each reported incident, and the report itself. You might see several

reports that are not directly related to Greatwood, but are related to nearby neighborhoods outside the subdivision. These are included so you are more aware of what is happening both within and outside of Greatwood.

Deputy J. (Johnny) Alvarado Deputy J. (Johnny) Alvarado is a 15 year veteran of law

enforcement and has been with the Fort Bend County

Sheriff ’s Office since 2008. Deputy J. Alvarado has lived in

the Sugarland and Richmond area most of his life and for

that reason he is dedicated to keeping the communities of

Fort Bend County safe. My goal as a patrol deputy here in

Greatwood is to continue making this community a safe and

enjoyable place to live. I look forward to meeting with you in

the future.

Deputy C. (Charlie) Willeby Deputy C. (Charlie) Willeby has been employeed with the

Deputy Willeby enjoys working in the community and looks

forward to meeting the residents.

Deputy TurnerDeputy Turner started his law enforcement career with the

Fort Bend County Sheriffs Office in 2007. Deputy Turner first

worked as a Detention Deputy in the jail for one year before

transferring to Patrol as a Patrol Deputy. Deputy Turner has

worked all over Fort Bend County as a Patrol Deputy for the

Introducing Greatwood’s Deputy Sheriffs

Safety and Security News

Deputy J. (Jeff) Brownson Deputy J. (Jeff) Brownson has served Fort Bend County over

the last 13 years and is an eight year law enforcement veteran.

He has served with the Fort Bend County Sheriff ’s Office,

Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constables Office, Fort Bend

County Fire Marshal’s Office and Stafford Fire Department.

He has held the ranks of Deputy, Investigator and Lieutenant.

He has also lived in Fort Bend County his entire life. Deputy

Brownson loves the feel of Community-Based Policing, he

believes that Community Policing brings police and citizens

together to prevent crime and solve neighborhood problems.

With community policing, the emphasis is on stopping crime

before it happens, not responding to calls for service after

the crime occurs. Community policing gives citizens more

control over the quality of life in their community. Community

policing means police become part of the neighborhood. This

helps police get a better sense of resident’s needs and helps

residents to develop greater trust in the police. He looks

forward to meeting with each of you in t he future.

In a cardiac emergency, a fast, comprehensive response can be the difference between life and death. That’s why our Heart & Vascular Center offers the most advanced cardiac care program in the area.

In fact, we’re the only hospital in the Fort Bend area to provide 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery services. Also, because we consistently exceed national standards in the most critical components of cardiac care, we’re a nationally accredited chest pain center.

In a cardiac emergency, there’s only one place you need to be — Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. That’s the difference between practicing medicine and leading it.

As many of you may have heard by now the respective Boards of MUD, LID and your HOA came to an agreement

with regards to a surplus that was realized when the annexation by Sugar Land became a more imminent event. The City has completed many of the inspections and surveys to the existing infrastructure they will become responsible for once they annex Greatwood. Which according to the strategic agreement cannot take place earlier than a minimum of 12 months from the date of official notice, which has not been received as of yet, but is anticipated to happen in 2016. We had requested that the MUD consider “granting” us any surplus funds to use in the community and once an audit was completed, which took into account input from all the MUD’s engineers and operators, the final total was apx $4,2MM. One of the main concerns was that ANY projects undertaken with this money maintain the “private” status of our amenities and also avoid these funds just being handed over to the City – which would give the Neighborhood no credit for. When the scope of the support became evident a committee was formed to discuss and propose what could be done with these funds. This committee was made up of the Presidents of the MUD, LID and HOA and its members. The committee’s goal was to propose the rough ideas and then pass the reins on to a more local group of residents as appointed by these three entities. It was envisioned that this committee would handle the actual design and implementation of the final projects through fruition. These funds are restricted by statute as to what can and cannot be supported/paid for in the community. It is of note that both the HOA and MUD’s attorneys and accountants reviewed the statutes so that we make sure we are in compliance with what can be done. With that said the HOA Board formally introduced the project at the last quarterly Rep meeting reviewing the proposed plans to improve pool 3 with a splash pad, slide (like those in water parks) and a lazy river. It is also proposed to construct a new and much larger community center commensurate with what Greatwood residents deserve. The Board will continue to involve the reps with this process to ensure that you, as residents, have a voice in the process. We encourage you to let your reps know your ideas for these projects. Thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully,

Jack Molho,

The Association’s 2015 Budget is on track through the first 10 months. The Operating Budget is under budget largely because less has been spent on utilities and collections than anticipated. The Capital Improvement budget is running a little over budget largely because of unforeseen needed repairs to the electrical infrastructure at the entrances, the need to replace two fountains instead of just one, and the acquisition of the 3 acres across from Campbell from the MUDs. At this time, the Board believes that there will be funds left in order to contribute to the permanent Reserve Fund as planned.

By the time you read this, you should have received a copy of the 2016 annual budget which was presented at the Quarterly Neighborhood Rep meeting in late October. The budget includes a modest 3% assessment increase in order to keep pace with vendor contract increases and the continuing effort to maintain an ageing infrastructure. The Operating Budget continues to provide the necessary funding to replace landscaping as needed as well as routine maintenance in the many asset categories. The 2016 Capital Improvement budget provides for an increase in the number of Brick Panel replacements, the replacement of worn out street pavers, and an increase for improvements and replacements to the playgrounds. Funding has also been included to provide for the installation of entrance security cameras pending competitive bidding and a final Board review and decision.

About Dickinson Elementary

http://www.dickinsonpto.com/

The Dolphin Dash, presented by the Dickinson PTO and Orthodontique, is a fun and exciting in-school fun run that teaches kids about leadership and character. The event kicked off on November 20th with a pep rally, followed by week long lessons that were interactive and hands on, and will end on December 4th with an in-school, pledge based fun-run. Kids can win fun prizes throughout the week, minimal volunteer power is required, and the program offers a lot of money raising potential for the school. The best part is all students get to participate regardless of the fundraising efforts.
