First slaves arrived in 1526.

Slave holders needed cheap labor.

Not just blacks, not just the North

Africa was a beautiful place before slavery.

12 million people were taken between 1450-1850.

20% didn’t make it to America.

ALL slaves worked.

Variety of jobs

Variety of punishments and sometimes benefits

Poor living conditions

Cheap clothing and food

Slaves made the best of it.

12 PM – Lunch

7 PM – Dinner

11 PM – Bed

Family was VERY important.

Slaves practiced new version of Christianity.

Slaves told folktales.

Slaves found small ways to rebel against masters.

Fleeing to the North was hard.

Nat Turner’s Rebellion

Northwest Ordinance made slavery illegal.

First settlers were slave owners.

Many tried to get slavery legalized.
