I would like to take this time to thank your executive board for 2013 – Valarie Erwin, 2013 Vice-President, Kim Clark , Treasurer, Gary Barkman, Secretary and my favorite right-hand man for the last 3 years, John Albin, as he ends his long-running term as Immediate Past President. Although he retired in 2012, John has been invaluable to the Chapter in many “behind the scene” ways, including publishing our wonderful newsletter and did a fantastic job, as always, on the 2013 Vendor Expo. While I believe we may have roped him into one more year as the Expo Chairperson, someone’s going to have some mighty big shoes to fill (hint here, Gary J). We’ve done some fantastic things this year as a Chapter, and you all deserve a round of applause! Not only are our Resource and Specifications library’s up and running, but there have been several improvements made to our website, we’ve been involved in several charity events (PF Chang’s Rock & Roll Marathon, Channel 8 Pledge Drive, a Purchasing month Sock/ Blanket drive for Springdale Assisted Living Center in Mesa, Pat Tillman’s Run, Juvenile Diabetes Research, Walk to End Autism, and sock collection for JustaCenter for Homeless. I’m very proud of the events our members have participated in and/or provided donations for – it goes to show we ARE a group of giving people. All of what we’ve accomplished this past year – and it doesn’t even include the members we were able to silently assist. As I always say, I love to pay it forward and I’m proud to be a part of such a giving group. We had a record number of participants attend National Forum in Orlando in August – where we had several members receive their CPPB/CPPO Certification recognition. It’s also a compliment to AZ-NIGP that we had several members do presentations and/or participate in panel discussions. We were also a finalist for Large Chapter of the Year, and while we didn’t win (this time!) we had several compliments on our submittal as well as our work as a Chapter. We’ll just have to give them a run for their money in 2014 and win!! Our 24 th Annual Regional Conference & Vendor Expo in October was such a smashing success, that before the conference was over, John was able to book ½ the booths already for the 25 th Annual Conference in October 2014!! To me, that’s a testament of what a fantastic membership base we have and your belief in what we do as a Chapter. Finishing out our busy year was our 2 nd Annual Reverse Trade show. I have to admit I was under the weather and unable to put forth a lot of effort

into this event, I owe a great deal to the committee and specifically JessRomney, who “ran the show” in my absence, Brandy Andersen & NicoleArnold for doing everything I wasn’t able to do without hesitation, MichaelGreene, Irma Guzman, Gary Barkman, and Ed Quedens. Without thesefolks, and the help of our friends at the Mesa Chamber of Commerce andEconomic Development Office, the show would’ve been a bust. Instead,we had a fantastic turnout of 520+ vendors/suppliers!

As 2014 begins, please welcome your new Executive Board – ValarieErwin, President, Irma Guzman, Vice-President, Kim Clark, Treasurer, and Gary Barkman, Secretary, with me now joining the other wonderfulfolks who have had the privilege of being elected to serve our fine AZ-NIGPmembers. I am eternally thankful to each and every one of you for yourinterest and support. Without you, we could not have such a successfulchapter.

Blessings to you and yours in 2014,

The InauguralRobert J. Descheemaker Mentoring Award

The Arizona Capitol Chapter of NIGP recently initiated a new award that recognizesoutstanding mentorship contributions to the profession. The inaugural award was presentedto Robert Deschmaker who has recently completed his 28th year of public service that includedpositions with the Department of Administration, State Procurement Office and the City ofChandler. Due to the significant mentorship contributions Robert has made over his long anddistinguished procurement career, the committee found it appropriate to not only select himfor this inaugural recognition but to include his name on the award’s title – the “RJD MentoringAward.”

Throughout his career, Robert has been an accessible and reassuring voice to his fellowprocurement colleagues. A strong voice for meaningful cooperative procurement, Robert hasmade significant contributions to many organizations including the State Procurement Office,City of Chandler, NIGP, WSCA, SAVE and GPPCS.

Robert has earned the respect and admiration of his fellow colleagues as evidenced by manyof the testimonials that were read at the award ceremony. A reoccurring theme was the highregard held for his integrity, ethics, and supportive management style. Gary Barkman, NIGPSecretary, commented, “Roberts “Ethics” are second to none.” His legacy of mentorship will beremembered for many, many years to come.
