I grew up with an idea of what I believed to be “motivation”. I watched the nike ads, portraying 10 mile city runs in the early morning darkness. I saw countless movies where the characters were overcome with an overwhelming energy that drove them the extra distance. From these influences I derived my own opinion. It was strange to me, however, that when I was presented with a situation that would call for this kind of motivation, I experienced quite the opposite. Instead of feeling locked in, I felt lethargic and “out of it”. I couldn’t figure why I wasn’t able to call on that indomitable spirit when I needed it most. The thought that I was incapable made me feel even worse.

This continued to be my opinion until I was enlightened by a dose of new perspective. My friend raised a point one day in a conversation. He said, “What if motivation isn’t supposed to be this good feeling? What if our perception has been off all along?” It made perfect sense. What better to drive us than the negative emotions we’re trying to escape? For the first time, I saw clearly, the real magnitude of my motivation.

It may seem like a small realization, but since, I have not looked at one bad day the same. When I feel uncomfortable, I take a deep breathe. Instead of worrying, I take it as a reminder to keep moving forward. In essence, this redefinition of motivation has changed my life.

Even more important than this one epiphany is the idea that small changes in perspective can have drastic effects on your entire life. If you desire to improve and succeed as a person, these changes occur naturally. And that, more than anything, motivates me to continue my pursuit of positivity.
