Whatever your views on poetry (serious or funny), you can often relax and enjoy the company of others when it is presented in the form of "Humorous Poems". We certainly did in our February meeting when Joanna McKerlie recited amusing poems and used the right dialect when appropriate. Many of them were very well-known to us but there were new ones, too. She entertained us for an hour, and the writer was relieved not to have to dig into distant memories and quote them herself! An enjoyable morning

February sees us anticipating a craft morning, and then lunch at Highfield Nurser-ies at the end of the month. Following some confusion about our Knit-n-natter get-together, it was decided to make this on the LAST Tuesday afternoon each month, regardless of whether there are four or five Tuesdays in the month. There are vari-ous coach outings planned for 2018, including a five-day break to Eastbourne in October. Ring June Waters (724137) for more details.

If you are involved in a Community group, local charity or you run a class in one ofthe many venues around Quedgeley, Kingsway & Copeland Park, I would love tohear from you.

Distribution News

Welcome to Carol Jones for taking on Azalea Gardens, Magnolia Walk and Camelia Walk due to Mrs Lander calling it a day. We thank her for all the delivering she has done for us. Also a welcome for Nick taking on The Reddings.

To maintain deliveries to every household in the area, we require deliverers in the following areas:-

Kingsway:- Woodvale (part), Babdown Close, Ampney Drive, Silverstone Walk.Quedgeley:- Space Business Park, by Royal Mail Sorting Office. Copeland Park:- Beverston Drive, Sudeley Way, Swangrove, Hale Close, Lasbor-ough Drive.

We also need 2 or 3 volunteers to pick up boxes & bags of magazines between 4 and 6pm on the last Thursday of each month and deliver to various addresses in Quedgeley, Kingsway and Copeland Park. If the time isn't convenient, and you still want to help, then we can sort something out.

If you are reading this page BUT do not receive the magazine, please inform Distri-bution and we will get you on the delivery schedule.

Why not join the Distribution team? We have over 160 volunteers helping deliver over 9,100 copies of Quedgeley News to our readers, and we could always do with extra volunteers to cover holidays etc.

One of the many success stories of the magazine is that all profits from the magazine go to the funding of grants made by Quedgeley Community Trust.

We’ve had a busy few weeks and the group appears to be as popular as ever. Our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/StJamesChtterbox/ has attracted many new visitors. We are always happy to answer your questions – so please just send us a message! Our website is now integrated with the church website at www.quedgeleychurch.org.uk. The site is easy to navigate and we have our own page.Last month we held a ‘Winnie the Pooh’ morning. Some children came dressed as Pooh bear or Tigger. Apart from our healthy snacks we had a few treats – bear shaped biscuits and honey sandwiches! We played tunes from Winnie the Pooh and Lin helped the children make a crown and bear ears from card and stickers. Everyone enjoyed the morning. We’ll be holding some more theme mornings later in the year.

Do join us at Chatterbox on a Tuesday we’d love to meet you!

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the introduction of the new neigh-bourhood Policing Model which was launched in January, and our commitments to you.

In the words of the Chief Constable, Mr Rod Hanson this will mean that going for-ward it is the constabulary’s ambition to provide a neighbourhood policing service of which you, and Gloucestershire constabulary can be proud of. Prevention will be at the heart of our work, through well-informed collaborative problem-solving, building participation and strengthening the communities we serve.

We will remain part of those communities, known and accessible to you, and polic-ing in a way that both prevents harm and enhances your trust in us.

All of my officers and staff have a significant part to play in the service we deliver in your neighbourhoods.

But policing is too important a task to be left to the police alone and we recognise the enormous amount of strength in our communities. We will strive to involve you as citizens, and uphold the tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police.

What will this mean going forward for your Community?

For your local Policing area this will mean that you will have designated officers and PCSO who will once again be located within the local community, interacting with lo-cal schools, community groups and businesses as well as the people who live there.

We value your opinions on how your local area is policed, and therefore will be holding monthly surgeries at the Kingsway Community centre, and encourage local residents to visit and discuss any issues or concerns relating to their community.

Whilst there you will have the opportunity to complete a Policing survey, with a series of questions concerning your opinions and views on local policing.

It’s our aim to ensure that your community is a safe and stronger place to live in.

Regards.PCSO Kevin Lee.

EVERY THURSDAY AT SAINT JAMES CHURCH QUEDGELEY 10.00AM -12 NOON FOR THE NOT SO YOUNG BUT YOUNG AT HEART!

We’ve seen a few new faces at Chit Chat over the last few weeks. It’s good that word is spreading and our ‘regulars’ keep coming.

Thank you to Quedgeley Community Trust for contributing to the cost of a new water heater and wall mounted heater for our loo. It can become rather chilly in there on a cold winter’s day!!

As we approach Easter we shall be holding our usual Easter raffle with lots of lovely prizes to be won. Our Knit and Natter team usually come and sell their knitted goods, whilst our refreshment table continues to please everyone who visits.

STJ’s

Family Worship and Praise…with laughter and fun!

STJ Family Worship and Praise saw a packed congregation at Saint James’ Church. Many young families joined in the service. The children’s play corner was heaving as youngsters played with toys, and crayoned in pictures. Along with this, the craft activity was making a Christingle from oranges, red tape, candle and sweets. Excited youngsters joined in the singing and worship as several read out their own prayers.

The morning flew by and it wasn’t long until hungry youngsters, their families and the rest of the congregation tucked into a tasty buffet lunch. Saint James’ Church offers a friendly children’s corner every Sunday from 10.00am until 11.30am. Most Sunday’s there are craft activities. Crayons and paper are read-ily available every Sunday with an assortment of books and toys.

Do come and join us – whatever your age!

Fr. John with Cedric the loveable puppet! One of the youngsters putting the final touches to her Christingle.

Young People Taking Over?

Fanni (seen below), like many young people is studying hard for her upcoming exams. With more exam pressure than ever before, and a mountain of revision to do, young people like Fanni find themselves with much less leisure time than many generations before them.

However, every weekend, Fanni gives up her time to volunteer at Treasure Seekers Gift Shop. She works alongside adults with learning disabilities, those struggling with confidence and those seeking paid work to help run a shop that exists to train such people. So why does someone about to sit their exams, give up their precious free time to work in a Gift Shop?

Fanni came to us in 2016 with an eager desire for new skills and personal develop-ment but also to “do something useful to help others”. Now she reflects that: “vol-unteering at Treasure Seekers has become one of my biggest achievements in life and at the same time the most rewarding experience I could ask for.”

Far from the scary picture of youth ‘taking over’ in the news, Treasure Seekers con-stantly get the honour to work with young people, such as Fanni, who not only take initiative for their own personal development, but also have a passion for helping others!

Fanni has now become a volunteer supervisor, helping our other volunteers learn new skills too, she says she “loves working with an amazing team… and assisting them with their goals and objectives is great”. We are really proud of how much Fanni has achieved, and is now helping others to achieve too. Treasure Seekers have so many ways to empower and provide space for young people, why not en-courage a young person today to get involved, and begin a journey to fulfilling their amazing and unique potential?

In January we were pleased to welcome Mike Stratford who gave us a talk entitled "The Story of the Victoria Cross". The Crimean War brought the creation of a medal for all ranks. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert helped design the bronze medal and it was named the Victoria Cross. No lady has ever received the V.C. but 1,359 have been awarded to deserving men for conspicuous bravery or some act of valour throughout the country's military history since the medal came into being.

Chris Edwards came to our first meeting in February and told us about the interest-ing history of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. In 1824 after the Battle of Waterloo Sir William Hillary founded a charity dedicated to "The Preservation of Life from Shipwreck" and in 1850 the Government gave funding and it came under their control. In 1860 the R.N.L.I. was formed, but in 1869 it became independent again. Chris told us of the various aspects of their work, much of which is performed by courageous volunteers. It costs £177 million per year but it is still not government funded and depends on the generosity of members of the public. Finally, we were shown a film of a very dramatic sea rescue.

Please contact Jenny Sanford on 01452 883509 if you would like to join us. Meet-ings at Quedgeley Village Hall. First and third Tuesdays of each month. New time - 1.30 p.m. - 4.00 p.m."

The New Year has started on a high down at Little Meadow Early years and Out of School.

Nestled away on Green Farm Quedgeley we have been quietly keeping ourselves very busy. Jumping on a plane we crossed the channel to France, exploring food, learning some words and dancing the can can before jetting off to Australia where we danced like a Kangaroo and had snags for snack. Then we sailed to Egypt where we learnt to walk like an Egyptian, made our own pyramids and ate triangular things for snack. China next with dragons and cylindrical spring rolls before landing in Italy and trying to straighten the Leaning Tower of Pisa and making our own unique Pizza’s.

Being nominated for a grant by one of our many supportive families and then find-ing out we had been awarded it was such a lovely start to the year and behind the scenes staff and volunteers are busy developing the next phase of our outdoor trans-formation, our sensory garden. Blue flooring will soon accentuate the sympathetic planting encouraging the children to sit and use every sense to explore nature and wildlife. The next phase planned is our growing beds as soon as funds allow. Whilst our all weather area was completed at the end of last year.

We are always happy to increase our Little Meadow family and will consider taking children from the age of two. To find out more about our exploits please visit our facebook page or web site www.littlemeadowgroup.co.uk or give Clare a call in the office on 01452 725834 or better still pop down and meet the team.

Dear Readers,

What a very busy term this is turning out to be. We have welcomed parents in to share in their children’s learning – English, planning workshops and Harry Potter Problem Solving day and now World book day looks to be really fun with the chil-dren dressing up as a character from their favourite book. Some children from Year 2 have been selected to go along to the QLC Sports Hall Athletics, let’s give them a big cheer. Did you know that the school has its very own ‘Pets as Therapy Dog’ called Skye. She is currently listening to children read in our Puffins Nurture group and loves all the attention. Here is a brief look of what the rest of the children have been up to and learning in class so far this term.

In Year 1 we have been receiving lots of letters from Lord Farquaad, Shrek and Gingy all want-ing our help in different ways. We have made 'Wanted' and 'Missing' posters, wrote angry let-ters, made maps of new fairy tale worlds, made potions and yummy gingerbread men. We can’t wait for our next Chapter in 'Far Far Away' and see what happens next.

As part of our work on Amazing Spaces and Places Year 3 have been creating their own amazing space in the corridor. Taking inspiration from a book called The Win-dow the children have followed the life-story of Sam from his own birth to that of his own child - as told by the ever-changing view through his window. They created diary entries for every second year of his life as well as a huge collaborative collage of the first and last views in the book. A truly amazing space!

Year 4 are really enjoying learning about Europe. This term, we have been exploring holiday brochures as persuasive texts. We then decided to research our own choice of European cities and produce our own travel brochures.

Year 5 have welcomed a visitor from Shelter Box. They brought with them the shelter box and showed us the equipment which has been sent to people after a natural disaster. Our next job is to create a piece of equipment that could be used in a shelter box.

Year 6 are thoroughly enjoying their Spring term theme “It’s a Kind of Magic” where their imaginations have been let loose. The children have produced some wonderful potion recipes in English this term and have written letters to accompany the enter-prise money raised for Teckels Animal Sanctuary. In Maths, the children have been learning the rules of BODMAS and have been furthering their understanding about fractions, decimals and percentages. We have explored the concept of electricity in Science and the children have explored a range of different circuit types, including parallel and series. The KEY Nursery – Wow! The new starters have settled in really well and enjoy playing and exploring in their new environment both inside and out. The children are looking forward to World Book Day so they can dress up and share a story with some of the Year 6 children as well as a lovely visit from Skye.

We began our term with four new girls who were all keen to become Brownies. As is usual we started with a games night, which is a good way for the girls to join in straight away. Each new girl is allocated a Brownie Buddy who is responsible for helping her in the first few weeks and then during the enrollment will bring the new Brownie forward, introducing her with the words "This is X, and she'd like to become a Brownie."

The following week was mini-trampolining. A visiting instructor brought mini-trampo-lines and the Brownies all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The rest of the half term was spent working for the Booklover badge. We began by visiting Quedgeley library where the staff explained the workings of the library and the Brownies had a quiz to encourage them to use the non-fiction books to find the answers. We finished with a story read by one of the staff. Our very grateful thanks to the staff for giving us such an interesting evening. Once we were back at the com-munity centre we learnt how to cover a book, and every Brownie took home a new book they had covered. They have also made bookmarks and took part in a quiz to show how much they had learnt from their trip to the library.

SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLEWith

SAINT MARY MAGDALENE

Quedgeley & KingswayDear Parishioners and Friends,

Our journey through the church year has taken us well into the season of Lent. Some people may have taken up the Lenten discipline of fasting or refraining from eating certain foods or drink, others may have taken up a new and exciting challenge. Lent-en disciplines continue through until Easter with one exception – Mothering Sunday! On the 11th of this month, Mother’s will no doubt be receiving gifts of chocolates and cards from their children – young or old. Mothering Sunday has its roots in the 16th century and had little to do with Mothers. It was a time when people would travel to their Mother church, the place they had been baptized in or where their families lived. As the years past it became the tradition for those in domestic service to take a gift home for their Mothers on that day. The gift usually was a cake – known as the Simmel Cake and hence the Lenten fast was interrupted for the one day.

Nowadays, the card companies and retailers begin printing and selling Mother’s Day (now a familiar term) cards, months in advance. The number of flowers and choco-lates sold, rise in the shops and restaurants advertise Mother’s Day lunches galore. The economy booms!

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is important to thank our Mothers for all they have and still do for us by sending a card, buying flowers or taking them to lunch. For many, it may be a reflective time, remembering Mothers, who are no longer with us. However, we should not forget the origins of the day, a time to visit the Mother church.

Come and join us at Saint James’ on that day. Bring your Mums, Grandmas or Great Grandmas, everyone is welcome including Dads, make it a family occasion! The service starts at 10.30am, so you’ll have plenty of time to take Mum out to lunch after the service. Let’s uphold that old 16th century tradition by attending church, thank-ing God for our Mums, for all they do and have done for us. You’ll receive a warm welcome here at Saint James’ and Mums – you may receive a little surprise gift too!

With every blessingFr John

Finance – Your councillors have been meeting and discussing the forthcoming fi-nancial year and are pleased to be able to offer another productive budget for our residents with no financial increase. Careful budgeting will ensure that services already provided are maintained with additional expenditure built in to cater for improvements to playparks, community centres etc. Setting the budget is time consuming as many months of discussions take place beforehand to ensure that the community is represented as a whole with the council remaining mindful of the constant financial restrictions faced by our residents. Our residents want to see where their money is being spent and we recognise this. This year also saw the council change its name to Quedgeley Town Council with an assurance that this would not prove detrimental to the community. We hope that by maintaining the precept figure for each household as it was for 2017-18, you will appreciate our level of service and commitment to you all.

Quedgeley Town Council were delighted to work with Quedgeley Wanderers FC again on a successful grant application to Quedgeley Community Trust, this time to purchase new goal posts for the Astro Turf at Water-wells Sports Centre. The old posts desperately need-ed replacing but the costs involved made this difficult. Quedgeley Community Trust granted one half of the costs required and Quedgeley Town Council provided match funding to enable the new goal posts to be pur-chased. We have already received numerous mes-sages of appreciation for the goals and it shows what

can be achieved when community groups work together for the benefit of all. The photographs are Kevin Tudor, Chairman of QCT and Joe Alps, Development Officer at QWFC.Don’t Forget the Annual Easter Egg Hunt is fast approaching and will be held once again at the Nature Reserve off Curtis Hayward Drive on Monday 2nd April, starting from 10am until all the eggs have been found or eaten!! Always a very successful family event which last year was even busier than normal so to avoid disappoint-ment please turn up early. There are only so many eggs and easter egg packs to go around. There will also be hidden eggs throughout the Reserve which if found will warrant an even bigger egg, as well as the old favourites of name the bunny and colouring competitions. Please come along and join the fun.

Field Court C of E Infant Academy.

It's been a busy term at Field Court C of E Infant Academy. Our whole school topic of Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, Fairy Tale Fun, has captured the creative minds of our children and adults alike!

Mrs Peacey and Pepe the puppet have been in to two assemblies entertaining the children with their story telling antics. Last week was National Storytelling Week and amongst other fun activities, the staff re-enacted Snow White. The children thor-oughly enjoyed seeing Mr Smith as the handsome prince!

In Nursery, the children have been looking at Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They have painted fabulous pictures of bears to dis-play on their wall, and have been role playing in the home corner with real porridge oats. In Pre-school they have been busy making honey sandwiches to celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day and some of the children created their own masks.

Reception have been working hard on writing full sen-tences using The Three Billy Goats Gruff as a stimulus. They have also been drawing pictures; really taking their time and care in what they are drawing. The children have been enjoying acting out and telling stories using props outside too!

This week, Year One have been in the Forest School area making a warm nest for the Ugly Duckling. They then wrote instructions to let other people know how to do it. They used twigs, mud, sticks, branches and soft leaves. The children worked to-gether as a team to make a cosy winter home for the duckling. Well done Year One!Year 2 have visited Redwood Forest, part of the Slimbridge Estate. First, they used their map reading skills to follow a trail of clues and work out the mystery story. They created the different scenes from Hansel & Gretel using resources they found on the forest floor and acted out the story in groups. They took turns to see each perfor-mance and they were amazing! After lunch, they all had hot chocolate and biscuits. Then, they built their own beanstalks using logs, stumps and sticks. Although it was a little cold and very muddy, they had lots of fun! What a fantastic trip!

We are looking forward to term 4 and the teachers are busy planning exciting learn-ing opportunities in our topics; Out of this World, All Aboard and Don't Push That Button all have an air of mystery to them!

Quedgeley is a big place (over 17,500 residents). But although the sports facilities, particularly in Kingsway, are good, the ‘centre’ is short of cultural amenities by com-parison with older towns (like Cirencester, population >19,000). So spreading the word about the increasing number of cultural events happening in our city centre gives more options to Quedgeley residents and families.

Firstly the Strike a Light Festival takes place from the 21-27 March 2018 with some amazing performances and artist programmes – mostly chosen as the best from the Edinburgh Fringe or London shows. So do check out their website for details on www.strikealightfestival.org.uk. Our Culture Trust’s new tie up with the Camden based Roundhouse will also bring more great drama and dance to Gloucester later this year.

There’ll be a mini Aetheflaed festival on the 9-10th June to celebrate this wonderful but still unknown queen. She was Alfred the Great’s daughter, helped unite her king-dom, created St Oswolds Priory in Gloucester and was buried close by. Check out www.gloucesterhistoryfestival.co.uk soon for more details. The main Gloucester His-tory Festival (I should declare an interest as its Chair) will also be back in September with more events and better use of all of Blackfriars.

Lastly I must mention our museums. The Life Museum, on Lower Westgate Street is underappreciated and has some wonderful exhibits – like the original post war Civil War gate on Southgate Street – the City Museum is in good shape and the Water-ways Museum was reinvigorated not long ago. As with all Museums it’s a case of use them or lose them!

The other thing to highlight is childcare. Good childcare services are critical for a city with a high employment rate like ours. The Government will spend a record £6 billion on childcare by 2020, with more support for working parents: alongside the newly ex-tended 30 hours free entitlement scheme, parents claiming Universal Credit can now get support for up to 85% of their childcare costs for children under 16, and parents on higher incomes could be eligible for Tax-Free Childcare. To find out more visit the government website on www.childcarechoices.gov.uk. Meanwhile a new Secret Garden nursery opens off Cole Avenue in Lower Tuffley (the ex-Gladiator pub) on February 19th. It’s a good example of creative regeneration serving families.

Culture and childcare: two aspects of what a city must provide to be a great place to live, and both improving in Gloucester. Send me your queries on [email protected].

Best regards
