All of the early Caswell CO., N.C., Quines descend from William Quine(2), son of William Quine(1) & Elizabeth of Baltimore, MD.

William Quine(1) m. Elizabeth. He was listed in the 1701 Baltimore CO., MD., Tax List, shown on the N. Side of Patapsco Hundred.

Kedeworth MERRYMAN, b.March 23, 1717, was indicted for bastardy in June 1741, Baltimore, CO., MD. Henry Quine (alias James) admitted paternity of said child.

*Note: Though his wife’s name is not mentioned in Walter James’ WILL, Elizabeth “LNU”, the widow of William Quine(1), appears to have married Walter James, who became the stepfather of the Quine children. Burke: http://rebgen.blogspot.com/2009/08/ingram-genealogy-part-iii.html ”Back to Walter James's will - he calls Walter James [Jr] his son, and Priscilla James (another Priscilla!) his daughter. It seems he calls Henry Quine his son, and the will's language is a little confusing about this; certainly Henry Quine sometimes went by Henry James in Baltimore records. I think that Susannah Ingram, Jane Ditto, William Ingram, and Elizabeth Denton were the step-

children of Walter James Sr by his marriage to the widow Elizabeth LNU Quine, widow of William Quine.” Walter James sometimes referred to his Quine stepchildren by his own surname; it’s unknown if the Priscilla James mentioned in his WILL was daughter of Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and William Quine(1) or of Elizabeth and Walter James. _______________ Maryland Calendar of WILLS by Jane Baldwin: Baltimore CO., MD. WILL of John Ingram(3), brother of Benjamin Ingram who d.1779 Caswell CO., NC. Ingram, John(3), Baltimore Co., 21st Feb., 1738; 2nd Apr., 1740. To sister Dorcas Tabor (Tudor), bros.-in-law Humphrey Tudor and William Quine, bros. Benjamin and James and father in-law Benjamin Mead ahoan, personalty.“ wife, Susannah, extx., residue of estate. Test: Rich Caswell, Edward Day, William Wright. 22. 160.

Above abstract of John Ingram(3)’s 1738 WILL identifies William Quine(2) as his brother-in-law. He additionally identifies his brothers, Benjamin and James Ingram, all of whom later migrated to Caswell CO., N.C.; his sister Dorcas (Ingram) Tudor is also noted. Brother-in-law William Quine(2) is believed to of married Benjamin and James Ingram’s sister, “Mary Ingram.” John Ingram(2), father of these Ingrams, wrote his Baltimore CO., MD., WILL in 1733. While John Ingram(2) and wife, Mary (Peasley) Homewood/Ingram had additional children, the only children mentioned in his WlLL were sons, John(3,) Benjamin, William (d.1739), James, and eldest daughter, Dorcas (Ingram) Tudor.

Several years after John Ingram(3) wrote his 1738 WILL in Baltimore CO., MD., his brother, Benjamin Ingram, married William Quine(2)’s sister, Susanna Quine, in Baltimore, MD., January 5, 1743.

On June 7, 1748, Benjamin Ingram, John Buck (2nd husband of John Ingram(3)’s widow, Susanna (Mead) Ingram/Buck) and *Abraham Wright

Page 4: The Quine family, from Maryland to Caswell County, … Quine family, from Maryland to Caswell County, North Carolina All of the early Caswell CO., N.C., Quines descend from William

(2nd husband of Dorcas (Ingram) Tudor/Wright), posted administration bond on Mary (Peasley) Homewood/Ingram’s Baltimore CO., MD., estate. "her est. was admin. on 24 July 1749 by Benjamin Ingram who stated she left 8 ch.; ch. of John and Mary: Peasley, John, Benjamin, James, William, Dorcas, m. (----) Tudor (3:193; 5:58, 13:378; 389, 37:158; 113:118; 121:172; 124:41; 126:23; 219-4:97)” (Baltimore County Families by Robert W. Barnes)

*The Wrights were among the Baltimore CO., MD., families who migrated to Orange CO., N.C., (the portion later called Caswell County) along with the Ingrams and Quines. I believe the Prissilla Ingram, m.Jacob Wright, August 4, 1765, Baltimore, MD., was a daughter of Benjamin Ingram & Susanna Quine, and named after Susanna (Quine) Ingram’s sister, Priscilla. Given name Priscilla/Prissilla had not previously been used in this Ingram lineage. Jacob Wright was among the Wright families who migrated to Orange CO., N.C., and is found in the 1800 & 1810 Censuses of Caswell CO., N.C. Jacob Quine is listed next to Mary Ingram in the 1800 Caswell CO., N.C., census. Given name Priscilla was afterwards handed down to many of these Caswell CO., N.C., Ingram families. It’s probable Jacob Quine, son of William Quine(3) was named after this Jacob Wright.

While Benjamin Ingram stated his mother and father left 8 children, he only named six of them. In addition to James Ingram, for which a birth/Christening record cannot be found, 10 additional records of children likely born to this John & Mary Ingram are recorded in Kent and Anne Arundel Counties, MD. In addition to Dorcas Ingram, there were four (4) more probable daughters, Hanna b.1710, Mary b.1712, Martha b.1714 and Elizabeth b.1720. Although I believe the given name of William Quine(2)’s wife’s name was “Mary”, the possibility exists he married one of the other three Ingram daughters, Hanna, Martha or Elizabeth.

Caswell County, North Carolina Deeds 1777-1817 By Katherine K. Kendall Page 8 Deed Book A, Page 116 27 Mar. 1779 On March 27, 1779, William Quine witnessed the sale of land to John Ingram on Moon’s Creek in Caswell CO., N.C. This John Ingram was the son of Benjamin Ingram & Susanna Quine. It’s yet to be determined if this was William Quine(2), or his son, William Quine(3). _______________ Compiled censuses and census substitute index for Caswell CO., N.C., for the year 1786 Mary Quine is listed just 2 names from James Ingram. This was either James Ingram son of Benjamin Ingram & Susanna Quine (1792 Caswell CO., N.C. WILL), or James Ingram, brother of Benjamin Ingram m.Susanna Quine. Quine being such an extremely rare name in America, especially during this early period in our history, it’s almost certain this was Mary (Ingram) Quine, widow of William Quine(2), mother of Benjamin, Henry & William Quine(3) of the 1791, Caswell CO., N.C., WILL. In his 1791 in Caswell CO., N.C. WILL, William Quine(3), son of William Quine(2) identified his wife, Sarah, daughters Elizabeth Stafford, Sarah Quine; sons Jacob, Mordecai, Henry & William, and his brothers Henry and Benjamin Quine. Per DAR, William(3) was b.1752 (Baltimore, MD.) and a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

William Quine(3)’s brother, Benjamin Quine, (likely named after his uncle, Benjamin Ingram) was also a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He married Ester Coram in Caswell CO., N.C., September 2, 1780. He died in Caswell CO., N.C. in 1808. Benjamin Quine & wife Ester had at least six children. Son Robert Quine was likely the eldest.

Robert Quine left Caswell CO., N.C., by 1805, having moved to Wilkinson CO., MS. He died there in 1815, leaving widow Nancy, they had no children. Robert was likely named for his mother’s father, Robert Coram.

The second of Benjamin Quine and Ester Coram’s sons was William Quine who married Frances Baxter, November 12, 1808, in Caswell CO., N.C. William Quine also moved his family to Wilkinson CO., MS. The third of Benjamin Quine and Ester Coram’s known sons was younger brother, Henry Quine. *According to Robert Quines’ widow, Nancy, Robert Quine’s young brother, Henry Quine, moved to Wilkinson CO., MS., and joined his brother Robert there in the year 1814, one year prior to Robert Quine’s death. Henry Quine and his brother Robert’s widow, Nancy, worked a Wilkinson CO., N.C., plantation in partnership until Henry’s death in 1838. Henry never married. *Note: Cases Argued & Determined in the High Court of Errors and Appeals for the State of Mississippi by W. C. Smeads and Y. A. On November 9, 1801, Jacob Quine married Elinor (Alverson) Gunn, in Caswell CO., N.C. His bondsman was his uncle, Benjamin Quine, d.1808. Elinor was the widow of Thomas Gunn who left his 1800 WILL in Caswell CO., N.C. This WILL was witnessed by C. Dixon, “Ann Green” & Mosey Ingram. Ann Green appears to be the same Ann Greene who’d been granted administration of the estate of Shadrack Greene, who’d left his November 17, 1788, WILL in Caswell CO., N.C. In his WILL, Shadrack Greene identified his daughter, Lucrecy Green as the wife of Archibald Alberson (Alverson). Though not identified as so, Ann Greene/Green was the apparent widow of Shadrack Greene. Most research (not my own) shows Archibald Alverson as having had three wives, none of whom are identified as Lucrecy “Creascy” Greene. Ann Green(e) having witnessed the WILL of Thomas Gunn gives credence to Elinor Alverson having been her granddaughter, a daughter of Archibald Alverson and Lucrecy (Greene) Alverson. Shadrack Greene’s WILL found at FamilySearch.Org: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-JX3F-7C?i=299&wc=32LJ-ZNR%3A169767801%2C170038001%3Fcc%3D1867501&cc=1867501 WILL was proven during the July-1789 Court Session, Caswell County, N.C., recorded on Pages 276-277 _______________ Abstracted from the July-1789, Caswell CO., N.C., Court Session: “First I give and bequeath to Zachariah Swallow the first son of my Daughter Mary Swallow the wife of John Swallow One Shilling Sterling: Likewise I bequeath to Sarah Cranford my Daughter the wife of John Cranford one Shilling Sterling I also bequeath to my Daughter Lucrcey Alberson the wife of Archibald Alberson one Shilling Sterling and I likewise bequeath to my son Thomas Humphries Greene and my Daughter Margaret Margaret Greene (m. Andrew Haddock, June 21, 1806) whom I likewise Constitute make and Ordain as my Heirs to have all my goods and property” Ann Greene (believed to of been the wife of Shadrack Greene) was granted administration of his estate.

Two of Archibald Alverson’s sons, John Alverson (Revolutionary War Pension Application S39148), James Alverson (Revolutionary War Pension Application W8326) are listed with their father Archer (Archibald) Alverson, in the 1786 North Carolina State Census. Both Archibald Alverson and son James Alverson are listed in the 1890 Federal Population Census of Caswell CO., N.C. Son, Elijah Alverson’s movements to and from Caswell CO., N.C., are described in his Revolutionary War Pension Application W10365; he is shown on the 1802 Caswell CO., N.C., tax list. Brothers John, James and Elijah Alverson all migrated from Caswell CO., N.C., to Laurens CO., S.C. James and John Alverson remained in South Carolina, while Elijah Alverson later moved from South Carolina to White CO., TN. He is shown there in the 1850 Federal Census, 88 years of age, b.VA. Archibald Alverson is last found in the 1810 Caswell CO., N.C., Caswell CO., N.C., census. While there is no record of Archibald’s Alverson’s age, wife Lucrecy is shown 80-90 years of age in the 1830 Caswell CO., N.C., Federal Census, b.c1740-50. In this census, Lucrecy is shown “Creascy” Alverson, living between Elisha Alverson & James Ingram. From the ages reported in the Revolutionary War Pension applications of John, James & Elijah Alverson, John was the eldest, b.1759. Lucrecy’s age would not exclude her from having not only been the mother of John, James & Elijah, but also the mother of Elisha Alverson (shown living beside her in the 1830 Caswell CO., N.C., Census), and Elinor Alverson, m.Jacob Quine. Elisha Alverson left his January 22, 1844 WILL in Caswell CO., N.C.
