George Mason in Worries

George Mason, Proud president of largest nonunion manufacturing company gets unpleasant shock after knowing that employees are willing to form union. At first instance he thinks that it doesn’t represent the employee’s feelings but later has to accept harsh reality on further investigation. Unhappy with the fact that even after giving liberty to all employees to reach him any time with their quires, observations, suggestions and problems; without consulting him employees went to form union. Hence he discussed the present scenario with his friend.

Points of Discussion

1. Whether organization was Quite or Healthy?2. Overall communication in the organization.3. George Mason’s approach as Leader.4. Ways to improve communication and achieving effective Communication.

1. Unhealthy organization.“This company has had a long history of paternalism, favoritism and unfair discrimination”,

this statement by a union negotiator interprets that there was problems in organization since long time. Also the reason given by employees shows that though working environment looks to be good internally it’s unhealthy.

Missing hygiene factors according to Hertzberg’s Theory.

• Policies and administrative practices • Job security • Supervision

2. Communication in organization.Though it is mentioned at the beginning that there was good relationship between

supervisors and employees and also president was open for communication, still there was lack of proper communication.Following might be weakness for improper communication a. Lack of Effective Controlb. Not clear Communicationc. Ineffective Supervisiond. Wrong Leadership Participation Style

3. Presidents Approach as Leader.According to The Vroom- Jago Model leader should not only observe and get

information from his subordinates but also act as facilitator, consult groups, interact with individuals and take feedback. Here it looks like president is not actively performing role as leader, he is just getting information from his supervisors but not participating in gathering information. Also it looks like he is not reaching to his employees directly and might that’s why though he has clearly allowed all employees to approach him; they are not turning up.

4. Ways of improving communication and achieving effective communication.Management and unions are two sides of coins same coin called organization. After

implementation of labour laws it is almost impossible to avoid formation of unions. But organizations have started taking it positively.

As in this case also Mason should find out the reasons of formation of union. And try to provide all the appropriate facilities to employees. So that union will not be separate part of organization.

Following are points can be considereda. Ensuring fulfillment of employees needs according to Maslow’s Hierarchy.b. Implementing proper distribution of work and labor.c. Starting Shop Floor Activities and involving top management to solve shop floor

problems.d. Focusing on fulfilling all hygiene factors of employees.
