At the DB Railway Forum held in Berlin during October 2019, Deutsche Bahn amazed visitors with its dizzying in-vestment and growth figures: for 2019–2023 alone, DB was planning gross in-vestments totalling 67 billion euros, 11 billion euros of which was earmarked for the renewal of its local and regional train fleet. DB expected passenger numbers to grow to 200 million by 2030, corresponding to an annual increase of 1.1 %. The figures for local public trans-port are even more impressive, with passenger numbers expected to go as high as 3.3 billion by 2030, represent-ing an annual increase of 1.9 %.

ses of a similar kind in the past, we have seen that people’s travel behaviour does not fundamentally change after the event. At EAO, we are fairly confident that the railway market will recover again and go on to achieve new highs after the coronavirus crisis, not least because of – or thanks to – the push of environmentally friendly initiatives and the global is-sue of reducing CO2 levels.

EAO is ready to accompany you, our valued customers and partners, moving forward into the boom of the railway mar-ket. With our innovative, reliable and intuitive HMI products for the railway market, we can support you in getting your systems ready for the challenges ahead in areas such as preventive maintenance or digitisation, among others. With the postponement of Innotrans 2020 due to the Covid situa-tion, we were unfortunately unable to invite you to visit our

These growth forecasts for DB’s pas-senger numbers are certainly impres-sive, and considering that these figures apply to Germany alone – other large countries in Europe and Asia are pro-jecting similar growth figures – it is safe to assume that the rail market as a whole is looking at a bright future.

The question now is whether the coro-navirus crisis and the associated mo-bility restrictions could affect these growth figures in the long term: I do not think this is likely. Human demand for mobility is reliably huge and sure to re-cover after a temporary drop. With cri-

informative EAO trade fair stand – here, the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the railway market is unmistakable as it has pushed this leading international event into 2021.

Nonetheless, we are already looking forward to welcoming you at our stand in Berlin in April 2021, where you will be able to drive a train on a virtual journey through the Swiss winter landscape and, of course, experience all of EAO’s innova-tions in the railway sector first-hand. We look forward to greeting you in person!

Passenger Interface is a transformational tech-nology innovation uniquely designed for public transport passengers. It will help your passen-gers’ electronic devices to stay powered and connected providing opportunistic charging throughout their journey and beyond – remain-ing stress free with no low battery anxiety and without the need to carry cables and chargers.

Passengers use their mobile phones for enter-tainment, information and for their personal se-curity. They value on-board charging as well as connectivity to the internet, their friends, family and colleagues as important factors in the qual-ity of their passenger experience. Intensive use means that mobile phones will often lose charge on a journey and phone charger cables can be lost, get broken or simply forgotten.

The Passenger Interface is easy and intuitive to use. The innovative iBeacon technology can be integrated with the train operator’s app to pro-vide tailored passenger information, smart tick-eting and on-board services personalised to the customer.

The Passenger Interface is a range of mobile phone charging products that can give every passenger access to convenient, reliable phone

charging. The Passenger Interface includes both Qi wireless chargers and also a standard USB-A socket. The multi-coil charger overcomes issues with phone placement on the inductive charging transmitter.

The Passenger Interface comes in four stan-dard variants; customised versions are also pos-sible:

Seatback mounted multi-coil charger in metal holster with secure soft-touch phone clamp and USB socket

Seatback SliderFLEX version for portrait / landscape viewing with USB charging socket

Table top, round single coil charger for mounting in a table with separate table edge USB socket (via a custom cable and mounting bracket)

Rectangular multi-coil charger with USB socket for flexible design integration options

Benefits to the passenger Charge phone without inconvenience of

carrying plugs and cables Opportunistic charging to avoid “low battery

anxiety” Access to additional on-board services

during journey Profit from tailored promotional offers during

and after the journey

Benefits to the train operator Clear enhancement to the passenger

experience and the operator’s image Can be retrofitted during refurbishment or

as a separate upgrade The SliderFLEX and holster accept most

modern smartphones Can be branded with the service operator’s

or sponsor’s logo Additional revenues through tailored

cator. This provides additional advantages and enhances safety in public transportation, espe-cially for people with visual impairments. Pas-sengers are intuitively warned about potential dangers thanks to the loud, audible warning signal and the LED status indicator visible from any angle.

When the train door is opened, green LEDs steadily illuminate or flash. At the same time, the door opening audio signal will sound to provide additional acoustic signalisation. As soon as the door closes, the red LEDs illuminate (or flash) and the “door closing” signal can be heard clearly. Choices in LED colours and com-binations are available and can be tailored to meet the specific application requirements. Ad-ditionally, for emergency call system announce-ments, a passive speaker module variation is available that can be connected to an external signal source and amplifier.

Safety has absolute priority when it comes to opening and closing doors in public transporta-tion. This also has an impact on accessibility issues – whether for facilitating passenger entry on trains, trams, bus or for public use emergency call and call-for-aid systems. Users can depend on both the audible and the visual warnings provided by the Series 57 multi-tone warning indicators (MTWI).

Typical applications Passenger access to trains, trams, buses Emergency call and call-for-aid systems Access control systems

Public transportation applications need indica-tors to not only be intuitive and vandal-proof but also quickly and easily identifiable at all times. For example, a passenger needs to be able to quickly identify from a distance if a toilet is va-cant, occupied or out of order so that they do not unnecessarily waste time waiting or search-ing for the facilities. In the event of a fire, it is especially important for the alarm symbol to be quickly identifiable. And there are numerous other indicator applications that passengers can benefit from.

With a 3” TFT display, integrated sensor for adapting the display brightness and a wide viewing angle, this display has been designed from the ground up to be easily identified. Aside from offering optimum visibility in all lighting conditions, the brightness sensor also optimis-es the service life of the device by ensuring that the illumination is never brighter than it needs to be. The clear visibility of up to 16 customisable symbols on each display builds upon the large

When developing an HMI system, it is important to ensure that all functional and ergonomic requirements are taken into account and that all market and country-specific standards are met. That is why we rely on a holistic project manage-ment approach when developing an HMI system solution.

During project initialisation, we place great importance on getting to know the customer’s specific requirements for ac-curate implementation. With our effective, efficient planning and design processes, we can ensure accurate execution from the design and production of the prototype, to the Zero Series, and all the way to series production.

This is the approach we used to develop the panel shown here. The customer-specific HMI components are intercon-nected by means of a laser-engraved front plate. The front plate is fitted with mounting brackets for the cable harness, which in turn features an interface with a connector making it easier to mount the panel. The installation of a specific keylock insert switch is the finishing touch in terms of custo-misation.

Whether you need an HMI solution for the driver’s cab, pas-senger access, the toilet facilities or passenger comfort, we will put together your individual components and use a com-bination of technological solutions to produce an HMI sys-tem that is tailored to your requirements.

For passenger access, the use of theright HMI solutions can ensure thatthe system meets all standards and provides the successful and safe opera-tion of passenger access and exit doors on rail cars.

The majority of new light rail systems have pas-senger-actuated doors, which increase comfort inside the car and may reduce wear and tear on the door system. The primary traditional justifi-cations for localised passenger controls almost always involve HVAC / climate benefits – a key environmental interest by having locally control-lable doors as compared to mass openings of all which minimises the unnecessary escape of ei-ther heat or cool air.

When passengers have control of the doors, the cars tend to retain more heat or cooling since passengers can close doors faster, when no one is entering the car. There can also be an impact on dwell time. Where doors don’t automatically open if not activated by passengers, waiting times have been reduced. However, at busy sta-tions, where the use of all doors is generally re-quired, operators tend to override passenger control actuation and open and close all doors at once.

Regardless of who is controlling the doors, the critical elements that have to be considered in-clude safety, ease-of-operation, integration with

existing control systems, accessibility for all passengers, and reduction of the potential for human error.

Door control systems on passenger rail cars have developed beyond simple open and close buttons. The design of passenger access sys-tems for rail involves all the following aspects:

Careful consideration of human factors Ergonomic criteria, including requirements

for people with reduced mobility Interoperability throughout a rail fleet Clear and simple presentation of critical data Clear and consistent feedback to the

passenger, both audible and visual Integration of industry and federal guidelines

and best practices.

Trends in HMI Systems for passenger access include better illuminated symbols and indica-tors, the addition of simple and complex tones to provide audible feedback, sealed HMI Compo-nents, and “hidden-until-illuminated” controls.

HMI Systems that offer reliable, intuitive, and er-gonomic performance are essential to both the passenger and rail crew. The effectiveness of

Customer Centricity.

In the railway industry, rail cars and doors are exposed to harsh environmental conditions and a wide range of pollutants. External influences such as pollution, graffiti and mechanical stress all leave their mark on the materials and also on the integrated door opening pushbuttons, which necessitates regular cleaning – sometimes with extremely aggressive chemicals.

In response to these challenges within the rail industry, EAO has developed a new plastic coating for its Series 57 door opening pushbut-tons. Thanks to this new coating, our modern door opener can withstand a significantly higher

The importance of the International Railway Industry Standard(IRIS) for EAO and for our customers in the rail industry.

The expansion of our QM system to include an IRIS-compliant Rail Quality Management System was inevitable.

Efficient and effective – Rail Quality Management System.

Since 1947, EAO has been known for sophisti-cated control units and high-quality pushbut-tons. The company is well established within the railway industry as a reliable partner and HMI manufacturer, with our products used in driver cabs, doors and many other applications. We apply a quality concept and expertise that meant the expansion of our QM system to in-clude an IRIS-compliant RQMS (Rail Quality Management System) was inevitable after the introduction of the ISO 9001 standard.

EAO has been IRIS certified since 2009. This certification is a key requirement within the rail-way industry, with ISO 9001 no longer specified as the basis for certification; it has now been

The ISO / TS 22163 standard guides all our company processes, from quality management system to business management system, and requires extensive documentation: a total of 22 processes must be adequately defined and documented. These also include 10 “KO” re-quirements, which define the principles of a Rail Quality Management Systems (RQMS). These will be developed further over the next few years through internal audits and certification audits on the basis of a bronze, silver and gold achievement level model.

The adaptation of our business process, includ-ing corresponding training for all employees, took around six months. Thanks to strong sup-port from company management, we were able to internally focus on this mammoth task and also benefited from external support supplied by renowned service provider CC-Rail. Our proven ERP system and existing document management system were very useful as part of this process.

What benefits will this change result in for our customers? We want to remain attractive to our customers. The RQMS ensures that we use ef-ficient, effective processes from which our cus-tomers benefit. Our customers and product safety are of central importance to us, and we ensure our services are provided on time, based on expert knowledge and in a manner that al-lows for verification. EAO’s customers truly val-ue this.

replaced by IRIS certification. We welcome this development, since the requirements set out in the IRIS rail standard suit our company perfect-ly and will help us to keep developing EAO fur-ther, to fulfil customer requirements and in-crease customer satisfaction.

At the start of 2018, we decided to pursue IRIS Revision 03:2017-06 based on ISO / TS 22163:2017. IRIS Revision 03 requires management to focus on the process performance and process re-sults for the entire supply chain within the rail industry. In this regard, increased importance is placed on value creation for the organisation and its customers.

EAO is lean and fit for the future – the family-owned, heritage-rich company has started on the path to continuous improvement and is becoming LEAN.

Thanks to standardised, daisy-chained processes,

orders are processed more efficiently and in line

with the highest quality standards.

Pleasing results also on the production line for Series 57.

Behind the scenes – EAO’s LEAN Production.

“Progress cannot be generated when we are satisfied with existing situations.” These are the words of Taiichi Ohno, inventor of the revolu-tionary Toyota production system. Almost 50 years ago Toyota, then a Japanese niche player within the automotive industry, began optimis-ing its production based on an innovative new philosophy. The foundation for this philosophy was “Kaizen”, which translates as “change for better”. For EAO, the shift towards a new pro-duction model began in 2018, when the company decided to take a LEAN approach to the future.

process for these products was selected for the piloting of the new processes. All assembly steps in the production process were examined and the time required to complete them calcu-lated. The new assembly line had to ensure that orders could be processed more efficiently and yet continue to meet the highest quality stan-dards thanks to standardised, daisy-chained work processes. Workplace ergonomics were also an important part of the planning, and the production line had to be designed in such a way that it would be pleasant for employees working on it and would be illuminated as effec-tively as possible. After the detailed planning phase was complete, construction on the new Series 56 assembly line could begin.

Impressive resultsA team of ten employees from various depart-ments assembled the new line and moved all equipment and production parts to the new workstations. The assembly process was then run as many times as needed to define a more efficient, more robust work process with a practical ordering of all materials. The results after one week were astonishing: the order cycle time had been dramatically reduced by 80 %, and production flexibility had increased ac-cordingly. The space required could also be re-duced by 70 %, while quality control for the new production process was optimised. Since all process steps up to the automated quality con-trol and packaging are carried out by the same person, deviations are detected and corrected

early on before large quantities have been pro-duced. A pleasing result, then – and one that was repeated in 2019 with new production lines for Series 57.

Happy customers and employeesWe hope that you, our valued customers and business partners, are also feeling the effects of these improvements in our production pro-cess, and benefiting from shorter delivery times while enjoying the same high quality standards. The new production approach allows us to re-spond flexibly and promptly to customer-spe-cific requirements.

Many of our high-quality HMI components are produced manually. That is why it is particularly gratifying to EAO that the feedback from our employees is also positive, with work now per-ceived as more varied and more fluid. Precise manual processing ensures that even the small-est production parts find their destination and become part of an intuitive and reliable HMI – precision work to be proud of!

Further information is available at www.eao.com

As the first step of the project, the company fo-cused on expanding employees’ knowledge and an understanding of the new approach, ini-tially training around 40 employees intensively in LEAN principles. This knowledge was then brought back to the company and applied in its production facility in Olten, Switzerland – with great success!
