First term Charlottesville City Councilor Kathy Galvin was highly regarded for her forward thinking in balanced development and thought-ful street design. As a professional ar-chitect and various design credentials behind her name, Gavin offered great insight in the importance of design and how it can influence the commu-nity. Additional factors that contribut-ed to Gavin’s re-election endorsement resulted from her government respon-siveness and accessibility.

City Council candidate Wes Bellamy impressed the REALTORS® with his direct style and significant involvement in the community. What’s Happening Around Town?PCA Takes Over Management of Art in Place

Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to contract with Piedmont Council for the Arts for the management of its signature Art In Place public art-works program. The three-year contract is effective October 1st, and transfers man-agement of the program from the Art In Place Foundation to PCA on that date.

“Art In Place has been one of the city’s most unique arts programs,” said PCA Executive Director Gram Slaton, “and the credit for that has to go with Mayor Huja for his unwavering support as well as Eliz-abeth Breeden and her Art In Place Foun-dation board for the careful curation and management of Art In Place for the past 15 years. It’s humbling and a little bit daunt-ing to be taking on such a wellrespected and successful program, but the PCA staff and board are excited at the possibilities this management contract presents.”

The centerpiece of Art In Place has al-ways been its roadside sculptures, strate-gically placed around Charlottesville to bring a bit of beauty to commuters and guests traveling by, but Art In Place is also involved in C2D, a juried art show in col-laboration with McGuffey Art Center, and mural art.

“Art In Place has tremendous potential to expand the idea of public art locally,” said Slaton. “While the roadside sculpture program will always remain its center-

piece, Art In Place can also incorporate any and all forms of temporary art, from snow sculptures in winter to Shakespeare In The Park in summer. It’s all about art in the moment not art that’s going to be there forever. And that temporal quality opens up all kinds of possibilities for lo-cal artists and collaborations with a lot of great local arts organizations. We hope to move slowly and carefully to expand Art In Place in all sorts of new directions that City Council and our residents and guests can enjoy.”

Virginia Festival of the Book Announces 2016 Headline Events

The twenty-second annual Virginia Festival of the Book will be held March 16-20, 2016, at various locations in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The 2016 Festival will feature the Loch Ness monster, World War II spies, U.S. Immigration policy, the 100th anni-versary of the National Park System, and the Stinky Cheese Man in headline events, which were announced Monday at a Virginia Foundation for the Hu-manities (VFH) event.

At the launch event, Festival director Jane Kulow confirmed five authors for these headline events: • Historical novelist Sara Gruen, au-

thor of At the Water’s Edge, will speak at the Festival Luncheon on Thursday, March 17;

• Master spy novelist Alan Furst, au-thor of Midnight in Europe, will speak at the Crime Wave Brunch on Saturday, March 19;

• National NPR correspondent Tom Gjelten, author of Nation of Na-tions: An American Immigration Story, will headline a two-part pro-gram on immigration, new demo-graphics, and diversity, to be held on Thursday, March 17;

• Historian Douglas Brinkley, author of Rightful Heritage: Franklin D. Roos-evelt and the Land of America, will speak on Saturday, March 19; and

• National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Jon Scieszka, author of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales will give presentations to students and teachers in addition to speaking at the Festival. In making the announcements, Ku-

low said, “We’re proud of the Festival’s twenty-two year legacy of bringing excellent authors and engaging pro-grams to Charlottesville each spring, and it is so exciting to share some of the events we’ve been working on for months. Charlottesville’s annual Pa-rade of Homes, sponsored by the Blue Ridge Home Build-ers Association (BRHBA), is

a much-anticipated opportunity for local builders to showcase their best product to the local community. As during previous years, Parade goers can view a wide range of home styles, prices and locations and get a look at innovative technologies, including cutting edge energy saving concepts, as well as the newest floor plans, and the latest color schemes and amenities. The Parade also will feature a net zero home, one that makes as much energy as it uses.

This year consumers will enjoy 32 homes from 11 different builders. In addition, there are two neighborhoods on display and brand new this year, two design centers. Parade visitors can tour these centers and see up close what is available in the way of counter tops, cabinets, floors, fixtures and carpet, and can get advice from onsite designers.

As always the Parade is free and everyone is invited to attend. Even if you are not planning to buy or build anytime soon, come and enjoy the best local craftsmanship and learn what is new. The Parade is also a great way to get ideas for renovating an existing home whether you want to improve your insulation, upgrade your kitchen cabinets, build an addition or replace old inefficient appliances.

Site agents and builders will be on hand to answer questions and give ad-vice about what is new and what might work best for your situation. If you are ready to build, they can also advise as to which of their homes and commu-nities would be a good fit. Over all, the Parade is a relaxed environment where you can learn a lot while enjoying a nice weekend visiting homes and neighbor-hoods with family and friends.

The Parade runs from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, October 3rd and 4th and 10th and 11th. New Construction Market Going Strong

Builders and agents expressed a lot of optimism about the new construc-tion market. “New construction has picked up considerably,” said Michael Guthrie, CEO and Managing Broker for Roy Wheeler Realty, Co.

“Builders are building on momen-tum since coming out of the reces-sion,” said Greg Slater with Nest Realty who represents both Bramante Homes and Stanley Martin Homes. He report-ed that there is now more of a focus on building the “right sized home,” as people move away from always look-ing for a bigger house than the one

they had before. He added that many choose to build when they find that some existing homes are dated or have obsolete floor plans.

Justin Kent with Real Estate III, who represents Craig Builders, stated, “new construction sales remain very active following one of the best years that Craig builders has ever had since it was formed in 1957.” He added, “The high demand for new homes is helping the overall local Charlottesville real estate market as well and is helping to main-tain a healthier and more typical mar-ket, instead of one with large swings in pricing and availability.”

“The builders are staying busy,” said Dan Girouard, with Spring Creek Realty. A large percentage of the mar-ket at Spring Creek is retirees from Northern Virginia and DC who love the Charlottesville region. “It’s a great place to retire,” Girouard said, adding that Spring Creek offers a lot to active retirees and the “builders cater to that.”

Chris Henry, Vice President of Stony Pont Design/Build and Riverside Vil-lage Properties, Inc. described the new homes market as “the best we’ve seen in a number of years. Days on the mar-ket are down and prices are rising. It’s a good place to be,” he said.

One consequence of the strong market is this year’s Parade has fewer

homes than last year’s. “There were other builders who wanted to partici-pate this year,” said Kristin O’Connell Sorokti, BRHBA Executive Vice Presi-dent,” but their homes sold before they could enter them in the Parade.”

“The Parade gives the public an op-portunity to meet the builders and learn about new technologies and new design trends,” Sorokti said. “We couldn’t do this without our sponsors.”

The Parade is an annual cooperative effort between builders and associates active in new construction and in the activities of the BRHBA.
