    Executive Summary

    The Re-Charge-A-Bulls have

drawn up this white paper to both

    examine and inform the community

of what The University of South

Florida in Tampa and St. Petersburg

    has changed to benefit the

    environment. The university has

    recently installed three solar

    powered docking stations on campus.

The students now have access to

charge their laptops, tablets, cell phones, mp3 players, and othersimilar devices using the solar power collected from the docks.

These docks which had been constructed from recycled material

were provided by Enerfusion Inc. The industry works to provide

other industries with clean, green energy and have presented a

number of solar docks to universities.

The solar docks are just one step that USFSP has taken to

become a more green university. USFSP has earned a gold star

from the U.S. Green Building Council for its LEED-certified building(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It is an

internationally recognized system of certifying green buildings

designed with the intention to obtain sustainability, run at lower

operating costs, be both water and energy efficient, and lower

greenhouse emissions. The newest structure, the University

Student Center, began operating August 22, 2012 and is currently

    seeking LEED certification.

The university has many other programs both underway andin motion. In 2008 the universitys president, Judy Genshaft,

signed the American College and University Presidents Climate

Commitment to lower USF greenhouse emission and eventually

abolish them altogether. Shortly after in 2010 a new proposal plan

by Student Government was proposed: a one dollar increase in

tuition would pay for USFs Student Green Energy Fund. In March

2011 SGEF was created with a variety of different ideas proposed

by the universitys students. Each year SGEF sets out to fund new

actions that will change the university. The committee

continuously reaches out to the public for what they want on

    campus.

This white paper provides further details of what the

University of South Florida has already been doing in means of its

goal to eliminate greenhouse emissions as well as any future plans

they are undertaking. The paper focuses and provides information

on USFs green movement and where they are today.

    Introduction

Be the change you wish to see in the world At the

University of South Florida, going green is not just an expression

but also a revolution. The university efforts to be a green

campus have been recognized through inclusion in The Princeton

Reviews Guide to 286 Green Colleges, the first comprehensive

guidebook solely focused on colleges and universities that have

demonstrated an above average commitment to sustainability in

terms of campus infrastructure, activities and initiatives.

    Why USF, Why Green

The inclusion of USF in this list, not onlyspeaks highly of the multiples activities and

programs that the university has added to

support this movement, but of the effort of

staff and student to help develop a more

    environmentally conscious community. Two of

the most crucial activities being push forward

by the university in this green revolution are

recycling and the Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design program. Recycling is a

fundamental process in the efforts of the

University of South Florida to create a

sustainable campus environment. Though recycling is just one

small facet of the larger scope of environmental responsibility, it

is an extremely visible and vital step in achieving this strategic

goal. Single-stream recycling is a technology that allows you to

place all recyclables, such as fiber (newspaper, office paper, cardboard) and non-fiber containers (glass,

tin, aluminum, plastic), in a single container

    for collection, processing, and marketing.

    LEED promotes a whole-building approach

    to sustainability by recognizing performance

in five key areas of human and

    environmental health: Site Planning, Water

    Management, Energy Management,

Material Use, Indoor Air Quality and

Innovation & Design Process. Of course, this are just a few

examples, the efforts of the school go well beyond recycling and

LEED. The eco-friendly transportation is another key part of the

school efforts. The campus has biodiesel-fueled fare-free bus

services that make it extremely easy and inexpensive for students

to move around campus supporting the environment at the same

time. In addition, USF counts with numerous programs that

recognize the effort of those who go the extra mile in spreading

environment consciousness. Sustainability Champions is a

program at the University of South Florida that highlights

outstanding faculty and staff who demonstrate a strong

commitment to making the USF campus and

community a cleaner, greener place to live and

work. The Champions are selected based on

    their commitment to conserving resources,

    reducing waste, recycling and reusing

    materials, increasing energy efficiency, and

other behaviors that will help make USF a

    more sustainable campus.

    USF Ranks Amongst the Greenest

With the entire nation doing its best to cut

back on fossil fuels and greenhouse emissions universities are noexception. Solar powered charging stations, recycling, water

efficient, energy efficient, sustainable gym equipment, electric car

charging stations, and hybrid vehicles are just the tip of the

iceberg at USF. In 2010 USF was recognized on two different

occasions of its sustainable activities. RecycleManias 2010 report

of a waste minimization contest based on the amount of

municipal solid waste generated per person on campus ranked

USF the second in Florida and the 25th nationally. The PrincetonReviews Guide to 286 Green Colleges identifies colleges and

universities that have a score in or above the 80th

    percentile. The

score is based on a scale of 60-99 and measured by experts hired

via The Princeton Reviews Green Ratings. The scores given based

of a measuring of the universitys environmental performance

pertaining to a healthy and sustainable campus life for students,

the universitys preparation for student employment in clean

energy, and the universitys environmentally responsible policies.

There is an average of one thousand colleges and

universities of which are currently considered green; these

    institutions are practicing in green

    movements and sustainable activities.

While recycling and conservation are two

of the most common ways to go green,

there are many other ways to achieve this

goal. The Princeton Reviews 2013 Green

Honor Roll shed some light on how the

    following universities have earned the

    highest score possible 99.

    American University in Washington,

D.C. has made many changes to create a completely green

campus. They have fresh food from a farmers market available

each week, they removed plastic trays from dinning which

reduced food waste and trays significantly, and a community

garden on grounds where students may participate in. Aside fromfood AU is taking precautions on the global climate. They are

committed to achieving carbon neutrality by year 2020. Some

    features for this are solar

    electricity, solar hot water, waste-

    to-energy, LEED buildings,

    temperature monitoring, and LED

lights are only a handful of the

activities taking place for thismotion to happen. Carpooling,

    student-run bike share programs,

biodiesel, and electric cars are this

    universitys way of cutting down

    notably on greenhouse emissions.

AUs current green project is Zero Waste. They separate

"compostable" or "biodegradable" material from recyclables and

    trash to compile compost.

The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine has been

the only college to succeed in its carbon neutral commitment

since 2007. This miniscule college only offers one major to its

students human ecology. This school lives and breathes

sustainability. Four of the six residence buildings were historically

summer cottages. The fifth building contains a community kitchen

and fridge, water conserving bathrooms, and sustainably

harvested wood. The last and newest building holds a renewable

    fuel ran boiler, recycled instillation,

    heat recovery ventilation, solar

energy, and LED lighting just name a

few. The campus sits on 300 acres

of land and forest; here they have

created their own farm, Beech Hill

    Farm. This sustainable farm

provides for the COA campus and its

local citizens through a retail farmstand. However, it is not merely the

farm where the students get good food it is also the kitchen that

supplies the students with beneficial, wholesome meals.

As far as green energy goes this nothing-but-green school

has several energy options. A wind turbine was installed in 2009

and a second in 2011. The same year solar panels were appointed

on campus as well as on Beech Hill Farm with future plans for

additional solar panels. Also that very year, students built anelectric vehicle equipped with a solar panel hood as a separate

student group is currently working on a gas replacement

generated from food waste. The food waste is composted at

Beech Hill Farm year round totaling a massive four tons in pre-

consumer waste and whopping six ton of postconsumer waste.

COAs impressive sustainability first began in 2005 when it

became the first campus to hold a zero waste graduation. This

schools sole purpose is improving the environment.

USF may not have any First University to titles but that

does not mean it will not get there. With a great SGEF committee,

much innovativeness, and a campus body excited for the changes,

USFs green movement can only become greater. USF has two

separate buildings, one at the St. Petersburg campus and one at

    the Tampa campus, which

    are LEED certified. USF has

    long range sidewalks and

    bike paths to encourage less

    vehicle travel. A

    transportation system called

the Bull Runner is free for

    students encouraging

    carpooling at the Tampa

    campus. The St. Petersburg

    location launched a car

share program which allows commuters to rent a car using up totwo hundred miles. Self operating gym equipment has been

installed in the USFSP gym which operates on kinetic power

provided by the students using them. A hybrid truck for

waterfront activities at USFSP has been purchased and there are

parking spots for electric vehicles, and shortly in the future low

emission vehicles. USF supports local growers by buying organic

product. Solar energy at USF is a small part of the schools green

movement, but an important, growing part none the less. Solarpowered charging stations were recently installed at USFSP for

students to charge their electronic devices throughout the day

and even at night using its LED lighting system.

These large innovative docks allow students to see the

power of the sun right before their eyes. It gives them a chance to

see what their university is truly doing, this tangible green energy.

But then again, is that not what made all these changes possible?

The students want to change the world, make the environment

better. Over 77% of USFs student body agreed to

pay the excess toll on intuition to fund these

    changes.

    When several students were questioned

what they would like to see on campus both Kelly

Mora (Vice President of Her Campus USF-St.

    Petersburg) and Solange Gorleku (Orientation

Leader and Vice President of Harborside

Activities Board) replied more recycling outside.

    Caitlin Greene (Residential Assistant) responded

she wanted to see more recycling and filtered

water fountains for refillable bottles this

project is expected to be completed by the end of the 2013 spring

semester. Mark Lomardi-Nelson (President of USFSP student

body) stated he wants to renew the students green energyfund because it the most impactful and unique green initiatives in

existence. It guarantees a per credit dollar amount to make

sustainable improvements to our campus infrastructure.

Lombardi-Nelson also desires a commitment get some traction in

this next year and potentially move forward. This commitment

basically establishes accountability for our university to manage

the resources being used and put them on Auditing system to

report how to make them better.

Universities Can be a Catalyst for Change, a Sustainable

    Change

Universities in the United States play numerous roles in our

culture. They are responsible for much more than simply teachingbasic curriculum. The university can be a center for research,

character building, political influence, and a model for best

practices and behavior. This causes the college campus to a key

player in creating a green society that is promoting a sustainable

    future.

As the University of South Florida began its WeCar program

3 years ago they can expect to reduce the number of cars used by

10 cars per car they have in the WeCar program. Now extendingthe program to the St. Petersburg Campus the program will allow

    the public to

    share as well as

    the students and

    faculty. By doing

    this Enterprise

    forecasts the

    increase ofcarsharing in the

    downtown area.

    This makes the

    university a local

    catalyst for future

expansion of this green movement. Based on this graph we can

see that carsharing has increased significantly nationwide in both

number of members and vehicles. Perhaps the Tampa bay areawill become a hub for such environmentally friendly activity.

    (Sheehan)

According to Jon Dalton and Pamela Crosby of FSU,

universities are responsible for the development of a students

  • 7/28/2019 The Recharge-A-Bull White Paper

    13/23

character development. Whether a higher learning institution

actively accepts the responsibility or not, doesnt change its role

but rather can affect the direction a student takes in their

development. Specifically they advocate for universities to take

the reins and purposefully influence their students to become

ethically and morally strong. Specifically this can

direction can be used to create a society of

    sustainability conscious professionals.

Dalton and Crosby confirm the thought

that Universities should take the position of

    promoting, A lifestyle that incorporates

sustainability, they go on explain this, as a

core ethical value (that) emphasizes the virtue

of stewardshipthat is, the responsibility to

care for those things for which one has been entrusted so that

they may also be enjoyed by those who follow. USFSP focuses

on numerous stewardship programs. On campus the Student

Environmental Awareness Society uses Earth day to promote

sustainable and educational ecosystem, inviting students and non-

profits to plant native plants, such as sea purslane that reduceserosion along the beach strand.

Part of a sustainable future includes volunteerism in

environmentally friendly ways. The Corporation for National &

Community Service reports over three million college students

volunteer their services each year. A report in 2009 by Campus

Compact showed that promoting sustainability and

environmentalism as one of the top 3 choices when it comes to

self satisfying community service. Scott Seider, Boston University, has research that shows, young adults engagement in and

commitment to community service are often directly linked to the

presence of a supportive family or social network. USFSP is

creating a campus-wide attitude that endorses this sort of

    volunteerism.

  • 7/28/2019 The Recharge-A-Bull White Paper

    14/23

The University of South Florida St. Pete is well aware of their

influence in the community. The Student Green Energy Fund

Committee grades green improvements based on visibility, along

with 10 other criterion. The visibility is measured with the highest

    quality being, very large/obvious

and will be visible from both on

and off campus and is located in a

high traffic area. Leading to a city

    of people witnessing the different

    ways the university is contributing

    to greener future.

    Another improvement

    USFSP is making is the

    adoption of an Energy

Specialist Program. This program is particularly driven make

students the driving force in energy efficiency. Their goals include

creating at least 10 student specialists who will increase the

search for energy saving measures to increase the energy star

rating of the St. Pete campus. The final goal is to use the groups

eventual success to increase the involvement level of otherstudents and the public. Making the program self sustaining in its

own right by using the similar thinking of change begets change,

    community involvement begets community involvement.

For over a century the world has looked to University

research for answers to every type of question. While the USF

does have numerous research programs that focus on

environmental effects of humans, you can also consider the

recent and future improvements are another form of researchand development. The use of energy efficient materials and

technologies by a University can be a driving force in the mass

utilization of such resources. The backing statement of an

institute of higher learning can carry a heavy weight. Theres no

greater marketing tool than word of mouth and the university

markets its sustainability to the nation. With each release of

support for environmentally conscious and friendly resources and

products USF is perpetuating the use of such materials.

The solar powered picnic tables not only support the Solar

Dok product, but the use of solar energy. The installation of

water bottle fill stations continues the support of recycling and

reducing the use of non-biodegradable plastics. These efforts and

more utilize the power of USF as a persuader of the populace and

promote responsible stewardship of the earth.

    USF Continually Improves

The University of South Florida has been named one of thenation's top "green" colleges. In 2010 USF started the nation's

first School of Global Sustainability with its first degree program a

master of arts in global sustainability. This program is to prepare

students for "green collar" careers and to find solutions for global

challenges related to sustainability. The University of South

Florida has made many changes to improve sustainability. Some

of the major changes around the University of South Florida that

has helped name it one of the top green colleges are recyclingprograms, LEED, student transit services, and student, staff, and

    faculty programs.

    Recycling

  • 7/28/2019 The Recharge-A-Bull White Paper

    16/23

The University of South Florida has increased their recycling

efforts. At the Tampa campus there is a major recycling plant and

    a few student assistants

    took the receipts from

    1006 to 2007 to find

    how much aluminum

    and paper were

    recycled. They

    determined that 48 tons

    of aluminum and 9,700

tons of mixed paper have been recycled at the physical plant. The

University of South Florida campus have also made recycling

easier and more accessible to students by providing recycle bins in

academic buildings, and most recently, in the dorms. Not only

does the university recycle paper and plastic in the dining hall but

they also recycle their lights and have moved to low-watt light

bulbs, which saves 1,689 kilowatt hours per academic year! USF

faculty is a big help in the recycling and reduced amount of paper

used. Blackboard has made it easier for professors to administer

tests and term papers. In 2009 alone over 500 tons of paper hasbeen recycled and 9,700 tons have been recycled since the paper

    recycling program began.

    LEED at USF

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design. It is a program that provides

    third-party verification of green

    buildings. The University of South

Florida has three LEED AccreditedProfessionals on Facilities Planning

and Construction staff. Over the years

USF have built many green buildings

each of the campus with a few that

are still in design. The University of

  • 7/28/2019 The Recharge-A-Bull White Paper

    17/23

South Floridas St. Petersburg campus has one building that has

earned an LEED certification for its environmental friendly

planning, design and construction materials. The University of

South Florida would like to eventually make all the buildings at

the Tampa campus green buildings. Over the past three years

fifteen roofs have been replaced with green roofs covering

410,865 square feet. The Universitys St. Petersburg campus has

recently installed solar power charging stations around campus.

Students can charge their computers and do homework outside

    while saving energy.

    Transportation

When it comes to transportation at the

University of South Florida the Tampa

    Campus has the most eco-friendly

commuting programs due to the campus

size. The campus has a biodiesel-fueled

fare-free bus service to take students

around the campus, the Bull Runner

Transit. The Bull Runner Transit even

travels a little outside of the campus toconnect it to the HART buses in the area.

The HART regional transit system is also free for students, there

are free carpool matching services, and those who commute by

transit at least two times per week have access to the free

Emergency Ride Home program. USF helps their students by

cutting the cost of gas to travel to school by providing these free

transit systems. At the St. Petersburg campus carpooling is greatly

encouraged as well as bicycling, which is very popular in the St.Pete area. It is mandatory to purchase a parking pass for on-

campus parking and one of the reasons the price for this pass is so

high is to encourage other means of commuting to and from class.

Along with the free transit systems to decrease student driving

the campus have increased on-campus house and dining and

other services to encourage students and staff to stay on campus

    through the day.

    Programs

Sustainability Champions is a program at the University of

South Florida that acknowledges faculty and staff who go out of

their way to make the USF campus and community. Two

champions are selected each semester for the program based on

their commitment to making changes that will help make the

university a more sustainable one. Very similar to the Champion

program there is a Sustainability Mentors Programs. This program

also highlights those faculty and staff that are involved with

making the campus more sustainable but while they are also

mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in sustainabilityactivities on campus. The Sustainability Fellows Program is for

graduate students to get involved with make their own school

campus more sustainable. The students chosen work with the

Office of Sustainability staff. Lastly, there is a Sustainability

Scholars Program that is for undergraduate students who will also

work with the Office of Sustainability staff to make the University

of South Florida a green university.

In January 2010 a new School of Global Sustainability wascreated at USF. Key characteristics of the School include: 1) The

School is rooted in our geographical as well as intellectual capital,

Tampa Bays coastal shorelines, with two thirds of the State of

Florida being surrounded by water; Florida has a critical need for

fresh water, and a need to sustain our environment; 2) USF offers

    19/23

renowned researchers in climate change, coastal environments,

sustainable cities, health and society, STEM areas related to

sustainability; 3) The School brings it all together, providing an E-

campus MA program, along with an on-campus intellectual center

for shared engagement, facilitating the creation of integrated,

interdisciplinary research teams; 4) The initial emphasis is on

global sustainability and water, but the School will evolve to

reflect a broader focus on Sustainable Healthy Communities; 5)

FTE generated will follow participating faculty to their respective

    departments/colleges.

    Conclusion

We can affirm with 100% certainty that USF is doing

everything in its power to convert its campus in a green, waste-

free one. In this paper, we mentioned the multiple programs and

efforts of the university to contribute to a greener campus. We

also cover in detail the whole sustainably concept and the roll of

our university in it. Like stated at the beginning of this paper we

should be the change we wish to see in the world. Undoubtedly,

University of South Florida is making a change; not only as the

member of our community but also as an example to other

universities around the country that yes, in fact its possible to

transforms minds and actions to achieve a common goal. Notonly student but also staff members and the community itself are

integrating and becoming one in this fight to make a better,

    greener planet.

Floridas St. Petersburg campus. This article seemed to have the most

information on that building alone and since that is our home campus I thought

it would be best to name that LEED building while there still are some at the

    other USF campus.
