Working in partnershipThis term we are co-delivering some of our courses with partner organisations such as Equal Lives and the Association for Suffolk Museums.
Equal Lives is the largest Disabled People’s User Led Organisation (DPULO) in the country. Equal Lives work mainly in Norfolk, and are governed by disabled people; the majority of their staff are disabled. Equal Lives offers support with:
• Welfare benefits and how to challenge decisions • Personal Budgets• How to make a complaint • Managing finances• Mental health, and how to access support • Accessing peer support
Equal Lives also offers advocacy support to disabled people, including those with mental health issues. Their focus is always to assert human rights, dignity and equality. https://equallives.org.uk
The Association for Suffolk Museums works to preserve and promote the county’s rich and diverse heritage. It is an independent
charity and membership body with four main aims to:
• Provide leadership for museums in Suffolk• Act as the representative for museums in Suffolk• Attract and manage resources for the benefit of its members• Increase access and learning in museums for the benefit of the people of Suffolk
Creative Heritage & Art in Mind is a Lottery funded ‘heritage and arts in mental health’ project offering arts-based courses across four Suffolk museums. The settings offer a safe and stimulating environment for people to explore their creative skills and develop individual artworks inspired by the buildings, objects and stories around them. http://suffolkmuseums.org/museums/community/disability

“Hello, I’m Paul Rao. I work at the recovery college as a peer tutor. My journey to get here has been long and difficult, following a serious mental illness that struck me several years ago. I remember how it felt when I attended my first recovery college course as a student: very anxious about new people and new places and whether I would be able to concentrate, let alone learn. I quickly realised I was amongst peers who all had personal challenges; we all wanted to start making sense of our lives; and we all hoped for better wellbeing. That’s what the recovery college does: it supports people to start taking control of their lives. I’m really pleased that being a peer tutor allows me to give something back. I love working in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment which inspires people to get something precious for themselves: HOPE.”
Paul
“Hello my name is Tracey Jackson. I was admitted to the Norvic clinic in 2014 after a serious incident that was brought upon as I have mental health problems. When I went to my first course I was nervous but people made me feel welcome and I settled down. I enjoyed the course and it helped me to understand more about recovery. Well this made me think, and I signed up for more courses. I have put what I have learned into my own coping skills and I now feel more able to change my life for the better. If I hadn’t been to the recovery college I wouldn’t be where I am today as it has given me the skills and confidence to move on with my life. I am now a volunteer and peer tutor for the recovery college.”
