hey’re the “Red Cover Girls”: all classic GM muscle cars finished in GM code 75 Red, all magazine cover features and each one a gorgeous example of its breed. We have come to expect nothing less from collector Mike Guarise of Chicago, whose extensive collection includes the rarest and most historically significant machines of that great era. The “Red Cover Girls” collection comprises three absolute treasures from the 1970 model year. Lot S151 is a Cranberry Red Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 4-speed Coupe, originally sold from Brigance Chevrolet, the popular Southside Chicago performance dealer whose offerings dominated the local street scene there; Lot S152, a Matador Red Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Sports Coupe, is an original Las Vegas car recognized by Guarise as one of just 142 4-speed post coupes built; Lot S153 is a Cardinal Red Pontiac GTO packing a 455 CI V-8 4-speed drivetrain using SD internals. Together they represent the high-water mark of the muscle car era, and as one would expect from Mike Guarise, they are in beautiful as-original condition and equipped with “all the right options and none of the wrong ones.” Two of these treasures have graced the cover of popular Muscle Car Review magazine, with the third appearing on the cover of Collectible Automobile. The “Red Cover Girls” are scheduled to cross the block at the Mecum Fall Premiere Auction in St. Charles on Saturday October 27, 2012. Don’t miss this exciting offering of three muscle car legends!

Chevrolet’s King of the Muscle CarsLOT S1511970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6

hevrolet’s Chevelle SS evolved through the 1960s until reaching its peak incarnation as the ultimate muscle car, the 1970 LS6-powered SS454, which was endowed with the highest horsepower rating of any production car to that point in history. The LS6 was an engineering wonder packed with a forged steel crank and connecting rods and forged aluminum 11.25:1 pistons. Fed by an 800cfm Holley 4-barrel on an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold, the LS6 breathed through high-flow closed-chamber heads with the aid of Chevrolet’s hottest production solid-lifter camshaft. The resulting factory rating of 450 HP

and 500 lb-ft of torque was significantly lower than actual dynamometer readings of over 500 horses. The 1970 Chevelle SS454 had more than horsepower to recommend it, however. Revised styling gave the car a more muscular appearance emphasized by bulging fenders, a larger front grille and a domed hood with available cowl induction, all qualities embodied in this purposeful LS6 coupe that is one of three “Red Cover Girls” from the Mike

Guarise Collection that includes Lots S152, a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Sports Coupe and Lot S153, a 1970 Pontiac GTO 455 4-speed. Sold new at Chicago high performance dealer Brigance Chevrolet, this genuine code 75 Cranberry Red example has only test miles since a full professional body-off restoration was completed in 2004. Typical of the low-option machines ordered by Brigance for their street-racing clientele, it features a date code correct “512” LS6 block and “291” heads professionally rebuilt to factory LS6 specifications; original Concours-restored “4557” Holley carburetor, “569” intake manifold and “837” alternator; a Muncie M22 “Rockcrusher” 4-speed and 4.10 12-bolt Positraction rear end. Inside the Red SS is a no-frills Black vinyl interior with bench seats, SS instrumentation with below-dash gauges and a factory Muncie shifter – in other words, everything needed to get the most from this premier example of Chevrolet’s all-time King of the Muscle Cars.

One of only 142 2-door post Sports Coupe versions built with a 4-speed manual transmission, it emerged from a Concours-quality body-off restoration by Muscle car Designs of Joliet, IL in 2009 to win both Concours Gold and the Emerald Award as the best first-time-shown Oldsmobile at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. It is correctly finished in code 75 Matador Red with matching Red steelies and a Black interior and, quite significantly, retains the all-original matching numbers drivetrain, original sheet metal and the original Red plastic fender liners.

ike its Divisional counterparts at Chevrolet, Buick and Oldsmobile, Pontiac took advantage of GM’s 1970 decision to lift displacement limits on its mid-size muscle by introducing a powerhouse 455 CI engine lineup aimed squarely at the radically restyled new GTO. When combined with a 4-speed manual transmission and 4.10 gear set, the 455 CI V-8 gave the GTO incredible acceleration to go along with its aggressive good looks and exemplary handling. While the popularity of this new GTO was such that total of over 40,000 were built in 1970, a mere 1,761 emerged from the factory equipped with

a 4-speed manual transmission backing up the new 455, and this stunning coupe from the Mike Guarise Collection of “Red Cover Girl” magazine feature cars is one of the best of that small contingent. Correctly finished according to the accompanying PHS documentation in code 75 Cardinal Red with rare 1969 Judge-style Sport body-side striping and a Black interior, this rare GTO was with its first owner until 1985 and its second until 2006. Powered by a correct 4-bolt-main 455 CI engine fitted with SD 455 forged rods, a high lift cam, correct code 64 heads and 10.75 to1 forged pistons, the car was the recipient of a professional body-off restoration completed by Muscle Car Designs of Joliet, IL in

2011 to a very high standard and has seen only test miles since then. It retains the crucial original sheet metal and original rear end with 4.10 gears and has been updated with a hood tachometer and Formula steering wheel, both rare NOS items. Typical of the cars of the Mike Guarise Collection, this classic peak-year GTO is exceptionally correct, expertly detailed and fully documented, a standout example worthy of inclusion as one of three “Red Cover Girl” GM muscle cars that includes Lot S151, a 1970 LS6 Chevelle SS454 and S152, a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Sports Coupe.
