Who was John Calvin?
• He was a Frenchman• He was trained as a priest and a lawyer• Calvin fled France when his brother was executed
Like Luther, Calvin wrote a great deal
• His Institutes of the Christian Religion addressed the entire world
Calvinism was not tied to the state as Lutheranism was
What were the tenants of Calvinism?
• Calvin believed the Lord’s supper “Sacrament” was symbolic—Catholics believed that the wine and water changed into the blood and body of Christ
Calvinists believed in pre-destination
Calvinists behaved as if they were pre-destined
In England, Calvinists were Puritans
In France they were Huguenots
Calvinists believed they were less subject to state authority than
Lutherans
This significant difference propelled the belief in separation of Church and State
Calvinism disapproved of Saints, elaborate churches and anything light
and frivolous
The elements of Catholicism: Color, incense, saints, images were suppressed
Geneva, Switzerland became the center of the Calvinist faith
• Thousands flocked to Geneva to build a city of Christ
• Calvinism spread throughout Europe
• Often, nobles and aristocrats converted, causing friction against the established thrones
Calvinists promoted the belief that work was honorable in the eyes of God
• Hence, the Calvinist, or Puritan work ethic
In the Dutch Netherlands, Scotland and early colonial America (New England)
forms of Calvinism dominated
In England, France and Germany Calvinists countered established
authority

The mix of Lutheranism, Calvinism, and Catholicism will bubble over
into the religious wars
