When you ask a nurse why they chose nursing as a professional career, several common themes emerge. The themes ranged from exposure to the profession at an early age, caring for or helping to care for family members, reading books about nursing, needing a profession that was flexible and rewarding, and the most popular reason was the desire to help people get better.

Within rehabilitation nursing, the majority of our nurses are bedside nurses actively participating in the daily care of our patients. We also have nurses with many different focus areas, such as: nurse liaisons, who evaluate potential patients from other facilities; PPS coordinators, who validate the patients functional independence measures (FIM); infection control nurses, who ensure we prevent the spread of infection; utilization review/documentation specialist nurses, who ensure we comply with regulatory bodies and validate our documentation; nurse practitioners, who treat our patients; outpatient nurses, who promote the health of our patients in the community; nurse educators, who teach our clinical Team Members; informatics nurses, who leverage technology in clinical practice; and our nurse leaders, who oversee their clinical areas to ensure we are meeting the overall needs and expectations of our patients.

our nurses to focus on the patient. Its truly the patients that drive our nurses to do the amazing things they do.

There are so many great stories to share from all of our nurses, but here are some of their achievements! Were all very proud of them!

Amelia Warner - Amelia came to MedStar NRH in October 1987. Upon arrival, her first role was as a float-pool nurse. She maintained that role for six months. Later she moved to 3 West as the resource nurse. In January 1989, Amelia was named Team Member of the month. During Nurses Week in May of the same year, she was elected the 1989 Nurse of the Year. This was a big year for Amelia, as in 1989 she was promoted to nurse manager. In addition, she acted as director

of 3 West for six months. Amelia attended the New Value Ambassadors course in Orlando, with Administration. She served as a New Value Ambassador for two years. Among her awards, she has been the recipient of the Safety Award; The Edward Eckenhoff Leadership Award 2004, and since, has received multiple Class Act Cards. Amelia has served many years as the co-nursing director of orthopaedics. In 1990, she assumed the role of nurse manager of 2 East until the present time. Amelia will be retiring in June of this year.

Katy Surdyka, 2E RN - Katy has a degree in exercise physiology and a Bachelors in Nursing. She joined MedStar NRH because she feels the overall environment on a day-to-day basis is great! Katys talent landed her in first place in the Gingerbread House Contest this past Christmas!

Indira Rethnaswamy, 2E RN - Currently, Indira is a student at Chamberlain University. She is one class shy of graduation. Kudos to her for her hard work both in the classroom and on the units. Indira has a Bachelor of Science degree from Tamil Nadu, India.

Mercy Ogbuokiri, 2E RN - Obi has worked at MedStar NRH for 14 years. She came here following a referral from a friend. Obi just graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University. What brings her the most joy is when the patients come back around for a visit after transitioning back into the community. Some may not know Mercys secret - she was a midwife in Lagos, Nigeria!

(Nurses Week continued from page 1)

Andrea Small, RN evening clinical coordinator - Since becoming a full-time Team Member at MedStar NRH as clinical coordinator for 2 East Ortho/Stroke units and 2 West SCI/Cardiac units in July 2012, Andrea has been an exceptional asset to her fellow nurses and Team Members at MedStar NRH! She has been instrumental in teaching and mentoring her teams and fellow Team Members; improving the patient experience; and helping MedStar NRH to launch a dialysis suite. We congratulate Andrea on her Everyday HERO award she received last summer too!

Sara Gibbs, 2W - Sara serves on the Skin Team (skin champion); hand hygiene (Infection Control); preceptor for new grad nurses; teaches spinal cord class once every other week; acts as a liaison for the business development and recruitment team; attends job fairs on behalf of MedStar NRH; is involved in the interview/selection process for potential new Team Members; is trained as a nurse coordinator; is the past member of the Nursing Council Committee; is a super user for multiple spinal cord specific/cardiac specific devices; and trains in accessing Mediports for patients on 2 West. What awesome accomplishments Sara!

Olatunji Ojo, RN 2E - Currently, Ojo is pursuing his Bachelors in Nursing at Chamberlain University. Ojo is from Ajowa, Ondo, Nigeria. He has been working at MedStar NRH for 11 years. Ojos most memorable moments are seeing the smiles from his colleagues and patients that makes my day, he says.

Beth Biggs-James, RN, BSN - Beth has been a member of the flexi-pool for six years. Beth likes seeing patients leave more independent, and constantly has a bright smile on her face!

Norma Sweezy, 2E RN - Norma has worked here for 21 years. She also works full-time at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Norma attends Chamberlain University to obtain her Bachelors in Nursing. Normas most rewarding experience is seeing patients get well and go back to the community, and be productive again, she says.

Ed Eckenhoff Honored by Healthcare Council National Capital Area

MedStar NRH Founder Ed Eckenhoff was recognized by the Healthcare Council National Capital Area, at a special luncheon in March for his lifetime of achievements to health care in Washington, D.C. On Thursday, March 13, Eckenhoff was presented with the Matthew F. McNulty Award, which was created in 1997 in honor of Dr. McNulty, for Eckenhoffs 20-plus years as a leader on the Board of the Healthcare Council and his exemplary contributions to the healthcare field and to rehabilitation.

Nurses to John Rockwood During Snowstorms Thanks!During the recent, rather bizarre end of winter/early spring, we had not one, but three, snowstorms totaling different amounts in the D.C. and Baltimore regions. Several nurses, who had to be at work to treat our patients in the rain, snow or shine, couldnt make it because they either had car problems or were stranded. But, some of those nurses wanted to extend a special shout-out to our president, John Rockwood, for going out of his way in the snow to help some of them and picked several up to bring to work for their shifts during some of the March storms.

One nurse in fact said, John Rockwoods actions in coming to pick me up when I was stranded makes it clear to me what a special place MedStar NRH is!

Social Work Month Shout-Out!The MedStar NRH Care Coordination team pose for a group shot in the Ground Floor Atrium/Dining Room in March, following a successful bake sale and other internal events highlighting the work social workers do for our patients. If you see our care coordinators tell them, THANKS!

This was the second year in a row that the Amputee Coalition of D.C. sponsored the event, which was held at MedStar NRH for the first time. A special congratulations to Jessica Barth, MS, OTR/L, research and inpatient OT, for spearheading this special community event!

Workers Comp Seminar Draws Huge CrowdOn Thursday, March 27, more than 300 attendees from the workers compensation community, along with MedStar physicians, Maryland Workers Compensation Commissioners, and the MedStar NRH Business Development & Recruitment Team, gathered at Maryland Live! Casino for the 2014 MedStar Health, IARP-Chesapeake, & IARP-Virginia Annual Educational Symposium. Numerous panelists and presenters tackled the topic of Medications Gone Wild. The symposium ended with a reception and performance by the MedStar NRH Feels So Good Band.

Wheelchair Hoops Team Goes to Nationals! The MedStar NRH Ambassadors Wheelchair Basketball team made it all the way to the national tournament in April after a great regular season and playoffs! The team had a great start to their championship hopes but later dropped a game and couldnt make their way out of the elimination bracket. Still, the team showed heart and character and sportsmanship in what was an outstanding tournament. Congrats to the Ambassadors!

Wellness and Safety CornerSpring Into Fitness! With the additional hours of sunlight that spring has brought us, this is the perfect time to brush off your winter blahs and get moving! Increased technology and labor saving devices have saved us time, but were sitting more, whether its at home watching TV, looking at our tablets or sitting at our desks or in our cars stuck in traffic.

In fact, Americans spend more than 41 hours per week with screen content of some sort34 of those hours being TV! As many of you know, sedentary time is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and some cancers. A regular program of moderate to vigorous physical activity is recommended to promote health and fitness. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate, intense physical activity, five days a week, or 20 minutes or more of vigorous activity, three days a week. Even if you feel too busy and stressed to hit 30 minutes at one time, try 10 per day, two or three times a day. Try something in the morning and in the evening.

There are many options right here at MedStar NRH. You can do activities such as:

Take walks (around the campus or building or neighborhood for outpatient network Team Members)

Join an exercise group or clubin fact, at Irving Street, we have Zumba every Wednesday afternoon from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., in the 2nd Floor Cardiac Gym. Each session is just $5.

You can also join the Yoga group at Irving Street or on your own. The Irving Street Yoga group meets Fridays during lunch, typically between 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., either in the 2nd Floor Cardiac Gym or in the New Value Conference Room, depending on room availability. Bring your Yoga mat!

These activities are a great way to promote good cardiovascular health, help you lose or manage your weight, eat right, manage stress, sleep well, and most importantly, give you sound body and mind.

AsparagusMays Superfood!Step into spring with awesome asparagus! Asparagus is high in fiber, folate, and vitamins A,C,E and K. Asparagus is also high in antioxidants which can help neutralize harmful carcinogens and free radicals in the body. These antioxidants help to prevent cancer and can protect the skin from sun damage. Need a natural diuretic? Asparagus contains the amino acid asparagine, which helps the body rid itself of extra fluid and sodium. To make your asparagus tasty and receive the most healthy benefits try roasting or grilling it!

Several Deserving Team Members are Everyday HEROESBy Pam Ashby, VP, Human Resources

The following is a look at some of our recent Everyday HERO awardees, who were honored at a ceremony at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in late March. Join us in congratulating your fellow Team Members, all of whom are very deserving and are truly everyday heroes!

CHRISTOPHER BOLLING, clinic assistant, MedStar NRH Rehabilitation Network, Perry Hall, 13 years of serviceChris joined the Perry Hall clinic when he was just 18 years old, and 13 years later he continues to be recognized for outstanding service. He is described as consistently demonstrating his value as a Team Member by jumping in wherever necessary; whether it is with front office duties, cleaning or even walking a patient to their car. Chris also supports the MedStar NRH Network as a whole by teaching courses for CPR certification, staying late for meetings with physicians and working weekends for various events.

MICHELLE MARTIN, clinic coordinator, MedStar NRH Rehabilitation Network, Germantown, 14 years of serviceAs both a clinician and leader at the Germantown center, Michelle is always looking for ways to improve the site for patients and her team. She manages the clinic in a way that maximizes productivity while maintaining a fun and low-stress environment. She feels clinic hours should reflect the needs of the community and doesnt hesitate to make after-hours accommodations to see patients. Michelle has placed a focus on providing exceptional access to care and is described as instrumental in the improved performance at Germantown.

LEENA OOMMEN, admissions manager, MedStar NRH, 17 years of serviceLeena joined the MedStar NRH team in 2007, bringing with her a wealth of experience. She goes out of her way to help patients and their families make the transition to our facility, and has the ability to establish a bond even prior to their arrival. It is not uncommon for them to visit Leena to say thanks for her compassion and assistance during a difficult time. Whether she is explaining to an insurance company the benefits of acute rehab, or assisting a patient being admitted from overseas, Leena is a true advocate for her patients.

CHELSEY SMARDO, food and nutrition director, 5 years of serviceChelseys transparent dedication to both patients and Team Members is described as unwavering and exemplary. Clean Your Refrigerators! An important reminder from MedStar NRH Infection Control: Now that spring has finally sprung and youre doing that spring cleaning (both at home and at work), its a good idea to clean up your work areas, especially your refrigerators! A lot of germs can accumulate in the fridge, so its good to keep them clean. Here are a few simple guidelines to follow:

Make a weekly cleaning log, if its a refrigerator used by your entire service area.

Discard all out-of-date food products because these will, most certainly, give you a stomach bug.

Date all your food items before storing in the refrigerator, if you are going to consume them over a period of time.

When the office refrigerator has a solid block of ice in the freezer, this means it is not working effectively. Defrost the refrigerator.

(Wellness and Safety Corner continued from page 4)

It is recommended to purchase a fridge thermometer to help guide you as to the correct temperature to store your food.

If you have questions, contact TsiTsi McLure at 202-877-1648.
