O Lord, be my help

Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O L, and have pity on me; O L, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese.

We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at Holy Redeemer. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an “active member” of Holy Redeemer. An “active member” is:

Properly registered on the parish rolls. Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays

and Holy Days Participates in parish activities/ministries

when possible Uses the parish envelope system for

donations

These are the main factors that will be considered in making the determination.

We are happy to welcome new members to our Catholic faith community. Infant Baptisms are usually celebrated on the first and third Sundays of each month after the last Mass. Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a

serious obligation and faith commitment on the part of the Parents and Godparents. It is highly recommended that parents are registered and active members of the Parish for three months before beginning the baptismal preparation process. We encourage parents to begin this process prior to the birth of their child After the necessary paperwork, which may be obtained at the parish office, is filled out, Baptismal Preparation Class is attended and completed, Godparent Eligibility Forms are received (Sponsor Certificates), then the Baptism will be scheduled. The only exception is major holy days, such as Christmas and/or Easter No baptisms will be performed during special occasions. It is important that parents follow the Baptismal guidelines as dictated by church law. Please call the office at 286-4590 to confirm class attendance which is usually held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 PM, second floor Parish Hall.

Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito has appointed a new Parochial Vicar for Holy Redeemer. His name is Fr. John Mc Goldrick.

He was born and raised in Pennsylvania. When he was 13, his parents sent him to school in Ireland. At the age of 18, he began his studies for the priesthood as a student for the Archdiocese of Armagh, Northern Ireland. He was ordained at 25, but after five years of parish work, he attended the University of Notre Dame for post-graduate studies in liturgy. After completing his post-grad work, he joined the teaching staff of St. Patrick’s, Armagh. His full-time teaching career spanned 29 years, during which he also worked on the liturgy advisory panel for the Irish bishops, and taught adult outreach courses to certificate-,diploma-, and degree-level students. After retiring from full-time teaching, he went on sabbatical, during which he spent four months at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Hobe Sound, FL. For the past two years he have been the administrator in a parish in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. He is very much looking forward to meeting, and working with everyone at Holy Redeemer. He will start his assignment in August 2018.

Fr. Iggy McCormack will be here for the month of July and Fr. Pat Amabile will continue to minister in our Parish. As we say good-bye to Fr. John Kasparek, and hello to Fr. John McGoldrick, let’s pray for all our priests and thank God for their ministry.

God our Father , Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and

the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. men

Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.
