The Return of the Shadow -- “The Island” TEASER

[The Shadow does not employ a teaser scene.]

ACT ONE

A news report informs us that the Shadow has sought help for a bullet wound

from a famed pediatric surgeon. But it turns out to be a ploy by Dr. Julian

Kern to get in touch with the Shadow to seek help to stop a murder plot. The

Shadow is reluctant to get involved until he learns the identify of the

doctor, a renowned pediatric surgeon.

Meanwhile, Margot has been going frantic, trying to find out if Lamost is

hurt. She goes to Kern’s townhouse, but is dismissed by Kern’s butler. She

sees the doctor’s car pulling away. She grabs a taxi cab and follows.

Outside the Deville estate, who should arrive but Lamont Cranston, very much

alive and healthy! He apologizes to margot for the mix up, but it couldn’t be

helped. He asks her to wait until he returns from his night business as the

Shadow.

ACT TWO

The three potential murder victims meet at Deville’s Long Island estate. The

Shadow shows up, intimidating all of them, except for Dr. Kern who invited

him. Deville plays the coffin music box, then smashes it in fear. He retires

to his bedroom.

Ellerby arrives to kill him, but Deville shoots him. Ellerby pulls out a

knife and throws it at Deville, killing him, but not before Deville shoots

him twice more! Kern arrives to find the two bodies. The Shadow directs Kern

to unmask Ellerby. It turns out to be Martin, who held a grudge against all

of the men. Ellerby, the Shadow tells Kern, died back on the island where his

skeleton was found.

EPILOGUE TEASER

We are encouraged to tune in next week for another adventure of the Shadow.

NEWSMAN: (CONT’D) The Shadow has been found. Dr. Julian Kern,

world famous pediatric surgeon, told reporters

this afternoon that a wounded man who claimed

to be The Shadow forced his way into Dr. Kern's

private clinic, and at the point of a gun,

forced him to remove a bullet. The wounded man

then revealed that he was none other than that

mysterious character who has waged a one man

war against crime, The Shadow. Before Dr. Kern

could report the case to the police, however,

the Shadow mysteriously disappeared. The famous

surgeon believes the Shadow has little chance

of surviving his wound. We now return to our

regularly scheduled program.

MUSIC: ORGAN MUSIC.

SOUND: PHONE RINGS, LIFTED UP.

KERN: Hello, Dr. Kern speaking.

SHADOW: (LAUGHS) Dr. Kern, the man you claim to have

operated upon was a fake. The real Shadow has

not been wounded.

KERN: The Shadow? You are the Shadow?

SHADOW: Yes, Doctor. Kern, you don't seem surprised.

KERN: I'm not. I've been hoping you'd get in touch

with me. That statement I issued... was false.

SHADOW: False? Come now, Dr. Kern. (MORE)

SHADOW: A man of your high standing in the medical

world does not issue false statements without

very grave reasons.

KERN: There was a very grave reason. I need your

help. An old acquaintance of mine, Ralph

Deville, the financier, has received a death

threat.

SHADOW: Have him notify the police.

KERN: No, he refuses to do that.

SHADOW: Then, let him take the consequences...

unless... Dr. Kern, have you also received a

death threat?

KERN: Yes, I have.

SHADOW: Before I made this call, I investigated your

past, Dr. Kern.

KERN: My past is a matter of public knowledge.

SHADOW: You were once a political prisoner in Al-Kufir

Prison, that notorious Arabian cesspool for

political dissidants. You escaped twenty years

ago with three other men, Ralph Deville, the

banker and Peter Martin the concert pianist.

KERN: Yes, but our convictions were reversed by an

international court a year after we escaped.

SHADOW: I know it was proved that you three were

innocent, but what about the fourth man?

SHADOW: The man who escaped with you? The murderer?

KERN: Doug Ellerby? He was caught and sent back to

Al-Kufir.

SHADOW: After the escape, one of you betrayed him to

the authorities.

KERN: I don't believe that.

SHADOW: Why else should he mark you for death?

KERN: Then you know Ellerby escaped from Al-Kufir a

second time, six months ago?

SHADOW: Yes, Dr. Kern.

KERN: Then you're interested? You'll help?

SHADOW: Yes, I will help. But only because your life is

in danger, Doctor. The world can ill afford to

lose the skill and genius that has saved the

lives of countless children.

KERN: You overestimate my importance, Shadow. But

will you help?

SHADOW: Yes. When and where does Ellerby's warning say

he will strike first?

KERN: At Deville's Long Island estate, tonight.

SHADOW: How do you know this warning came from Ellerby?

KERN: Deville received a miniature music box in the

shape of a coffin in the mail this morning.

SHADOW: A musical coffin?

KERN: Yes. A macabre reminder of our time. (MORE)

KERN: When the lid of the coffin is raised, the music

box plays a tune... a tune Deville, Martin,

Ellerby, and I whistled as a danger signal when

we were planning our escape from Al-Kufir.

SHADOW: Where is Deville, Dr. Kern?

KERN: At his Long Island estate. Martin is staying

with him and I am driving out there to spend

the night. I had hoped you'd come and help.

SHADOW: I will help you, Dr. Kern. Tell Deville and

Martin that the Shadow will be there, tonight.

doing here?

shot. Dr. Kern didn't operate on you.

LAMONT: Oh, so you heard that newsflash, too?

MARGOT: The papers are full of it. I tried to find you,

at your office, at home, at your club,

everywhere.

LAMONT: I'm sorry, Margot, I should have known you'd

worry, but I've had a very busy afternoon. Uh,

how did you get here?

LAMONT: Yes, also the owner of this estate. The banker

Deville, and Martin, the concert pianist.

police to come to the Deville estate.

MARGOT: I'll watch for the signal.

LAMONT: Fine.

MARGOT: I suppose there's no use my asking you to be

careful?

operated on The Shadow.

KERN: Yes, that's what I wanted to talk to you about.

MARTIN: Ah, there's a man, Deville. The Shadow. He

might save you from Ellerby.

DEVILLE: Oh, what could he do? I've had the best private

detectives in the country trying to find some

trace of Ellerby, ever since he escaped from

Al-Kufir again, six months ago.

MARTIN: By the way, Deville, I've always wondered, who

tipped off the authorities when Ellerby was

hiding after we escaped twenty years ago?

DEVILLE: Ellerby was a murderer, we were innocent men.

MARTIN: And also, who betrayed me, Deville, the time I

tried to escape alone the first time.

KERN: Now listen to me. A moment ago we were talking

about the Shadow. Well, he isn't dying. I

didn't operate on him. I announced that, hoping

the real Shadow would get in touch with me.

DEVILLE: Did he?

KERN: Yes. He's coming here tonight, to help us.

MARTIN: I've always been curious to see this Shadow.

KERN: You won't see him. No man has ever seen him,

but, he'll be here.

DEVILLE: Ah, Kern, for a man of intelligence, you're

talking like a fool. The age of ghosts and

mystic presences...

KERN: You're wrong, Deville, you're wrong. Because I

am a doctor I can readily accept the fact that

the Shadow is a master of the powers of mental

suggestion. Of mass hypnosis. Recent

experiments have proven conclusively that ...

DEVILLE: Rubbish.

SOUND: RUSH OF WIND, MENACING LAUGHTER.

SHADOW: Allow me to convince him, Dr. Kern.

DEVILLE: What? What was that? Who spoke then?

SHADOW: The Shadow, Deville. You did not accept my

power of invisibility, but perhaps you will

accept the fact now, for I am here.

KERN: Sit down, Deville. You look rather pale.

SHADOW: If I am to help you, you will all sit down. Sit

at that table there. (MORE)

SOUND: CHAIRS MOVE. PEOPLE SIT DOWN AROUND A TABLE.

SHADOW: (CONT’D) I understand there is no time to lose. (MORE)

SHADOW: (CONT’D)I must know the whole story, the truth, if I am

to help you.

KERN: Do as the Shadow says. Sit there, Martin, and

you, there, Deville.

MARTIN: Well, why don't you talk back, Deville?

SHADOW: Be quiet, Martin. Dr. Kern, I will help you if

I can, but there is one gap in the chain of

events leading up to this moment.

KERN: I'll tell you anything I know, Shadow.

SHADOW: Then tell me this... when, and how, did Ellerby

first threaten your lives?

KERN: It was our last day in boat in which we escaped

from Al-Kufir, twenty years ago. Storms had

blown us off our course. Our food was gone. Our

water was exhausted. Ellerby, our navigator,

was slowly dying from hunger and thirst.

SOUND: FADES TO NEXT SCENE.

EXT. ROWBOAT ON OCEAN – DAY

(KERN, DEVILLE, MARTIN, ELLERBY)

SOUND: WAVES LAP ON THE SIDE OF A ROWBOAT, UNDER.

ELLERBY: Water, water...

DEVILLE: Ellerby, there is no water. The cask is empty.

ELLERBY: You're lying, Deville, all of you. You've been

drinking my share. Give me that bucket. Give me

a drink of that bucket!

KERN: Don't do that. Salt water will kill him.

boat. Nights of storm and days of blazing heat.

ELLERBY: Water, water, I'm dying. I tell you, dying.

You're stealing my water. Where will you be if

I die?! I'm the only one who knows navigation!

KERN: Be patient, Ellerby. It may rain tonight.

MARTIN: Ah, we may as well be back on Al-Kufir Island.

At least there was bread and water there.

ELLERBY: (WEAKLY) Water.

KERN: There's no water, Ellerby.

ELLERBY: You're cheating me. Cheating me. You only

brought me along to steal the boat. You don't

want me to live. But I will live. I'll kill

every one of you for this.

DEVILLE: Oh, shut him up, Kern. You're a doctor. You

know what to do.

KERN: Gasps. Look! Martin, Deville... seagulls!

MARTIN: What does it matter? We have no gun.

KERN: I know, but don't you see? Seagulls never fly

far from land, or a ship.

MARTIN: Look!

DEVILLE: Look, to the west, it's land, land at last!

KERN: There to the southwest. You can see the sun on

the mountains. Ellerby, sit up, sit up! Look,

land. There'll be food and water.

(KERN, DEVILLE, MARTIN, ELLERBY, SHADOW)

KERN: So you see, that's how it all began. And now

Ellerby is free and out to get us, Shadow.

SHADOW: But, what makes you so sure it is Ellerby.

KERN: Well, it couldn't be anyone else.

MARTIN: It's Ellerby, alright. He sent Deville that

thing on the table.

SHADOW: That oblong box.

KERN: Yes, Shadow. Notice its shape. It's a miniature

coffin, beautifully carved.

MARTIN: Ellerby was a wood carver. He was always handy

with a knife.

SHADOW: But still it does not follow that he is the one.

KERN: Except for one thing, Shadow. It's a music box!

DEVILLE: And that tune it plays is the warning signal we

used while planning our escape from Devils

Island. Remember, only the four of us knew it.

Let me demonstrate as I open the box.

SOUND: MUSIC BOX PLAYS FUNERAL TUNE.

MARTIN: Stop it, Deville, stop that cursed thing. Stop

it I tell you. I can't stand it!

SOUND: BREAKING WOOD

MARTIN: Let’s stop talking about it!

KERN: It looks as though Ellerby meant business.

DEVILLE: Don't sit there conniving over me. You forget

your turn may be next. Maybe tonight, even!

MARTIN: I am not forgetting anything, Deville.

KERN: You'd better steady yourself, Deville. I'll get

you a drink.

DEVILLE: Oh, never mind. Here's the decanter. I'll pour

it myself. (SCREAMS SUDDENLY) Oh, that tune,

where is it coming from? I smashed the coffin.

KERN: Good heavens! It's the decanter in your hand!

SOUND: YELL AND SMASH OF GLASS.

DEVILLE: Someone! Someone changed the decanter. Ellerby,

he did it! He's been in this house tonight!

KERN: Deville, Where are you going?

DEVILLE: To my room. I don't trust anybody. I'll be safe

there behind locked doors. And if Ellerby comes

I'll be ready for him.

KERN: Wait, Deville, wait!

SHADOW: Let him go, Dr. Kern.

KERN: He shouldn't be left alone. Ellerby may carry

out his threat.

SHADOW: Are you sure it is Ellerby?

SHADOW: I am content to let events lead where they may.

KERN: You mean, you won't use your power to save us?

SHADOW: I shall use my power at the moment it is

look on the table. There's a note.

KERN: Good heavens! Ellerby has been here. Listen to

this! 'You are the first, and you will die

tonight, Ralph Deville.'

MUSIC: MUSIC BRIDGE.

INT. DEVILLE’S BEDROOM AT HIS LONG ISLAND ESTATE – NIGHT

(DEVILLE, ELLERBY, SHADOW)

SOUND: WIND BLOWING. DOOR CLOSING.

ELLERBY: Deville, Deville, wake up, I have come for you.

DEVILLE: (LAUGHTER) So you've come, Ellerby. Why, you

poor deluded fool! You think I'd let you kill

me in my sleep? I've been waiting here in the

dark for you to come. Let’s have a little

light. (STRIKE OF MATCH) So you've grown a

beard since I saw you last, Ellerby. And your

hair is gray.

betrayed. You betrayed Martin the time he tried

to escape alone, didn't you, Deville?

DEVILLE: Yes, but what do you care, Ellerby? He wouldn't

ELLERBY: Have you paid Martin for those hundred lashes,

and those hundred days of bread and water he

got because you betrayed him?

DEVILLE: Oh, he doesn't know, will never know, it was I.

ELLERBY: Deville, remember how we passed the long days

in that open boat, throwing knives?

DEVILLE: Don't raise that knife, Ellerby!

ELLERBY: We got so good we seldom missed.

DEVILLE: I'll shoot if you move!

ELLERBY: But Martin was the best. You may shoot me

Deville but my knife won't miss.

shoot you and you will never get them!

Lock the door. We'll deal with him first!

MARTIN: I hated Deville because he betrayed me on Al-

Kufir Island. I hated you, Kern, because you

have got the things that I always wanted.

Success, fame, glory. It was I who sent the

musical coffin. The warning note. I knew you'd

think it was Ellerby. I got Deville, but

Ellerby will get you, Kern. He's after you. He

hating you always for having obtained the

things that life denied them.

KERN: But you forget, Shadow. Ellerby may find me,

you before I saw you.

KERN: Yes?

SHADOW: Everything, Dr. Kern. Your escape from prison

after Deville's betrayal of Martin that

resulted in a hundred lashes. His resolve for

vengeance. From my clandestine sources, I

learned the truth about Ellerby's last escape.

KERN: Yes? Yes, I see now why he hated us. But what

about Ellerby?

SHADOW: You are safe now, Dr. Kern. Safe from Ellerby.

The chain of logic is complete. Three months

ago, a bleached skeleton was found on a

deserted beach, not far from Al-Kufir prison.

It has been identified, as the body of Ellerby.
