Swimming is a highly popular spectator sport across the world. With an estimated global fan base of 300m (millennial, tech savvy, high income, gender equal), 30m people practice swimming regularly only in the US and ranks as one of the most watched events during the Olympics (43m Americans watched the Men’s butterfly final in Rio).
Despite global popularity, professional swimming is not commercially successful due to limited mainstream media exposure. This is driven by irregularity of competitions (Olympics is once every four years), the inconsistency in competition schedule - less than half of elite swimmers attend world champs -and these events are not TV-friendly. There is an underserved global demand for regular high-quality swimming competitions which poses a great business opportunity with an estimated $1B market potential.
To tap that market potential, ISL has created a new category in professional swimming: a professional global league created around international club competitions running annually September through May in a spectacular media friendly format supported through sustained fan engagement outside competitive season across various digital services.
