“JEZEBEL” sold for $13, and snagged the win in the tra-ditional division for “All in the Family” at this year’s Scrab-ble Without Scruples Benefit Tournament for Literacy.
In the speed division, “SUBZONE,” which went for $12, ensured the win for “the Blanks.”
It was Saturday morning, the venue was Ivy Tech, and Dan Toon was the auctioneer for 5 “Supercheats” – words that earned at least 20 points, plus 50 bonus points for using all seven letters.
Twelve teams competed in two divisions – speed and tra-ditional, and in addition to su-percheats, regular cheats such as “trade a tile” and “ask an expert” were available for sale
throughout the games. Four contestants participat-
ed in a Scrabble trivia quiz show, hosted by Adrienne Flannery, and Josh Wickizer of Ivy Tech secured the win and the prize of “Scrabble – the Chocolate Edition,” which he plans to share at the Campus Activities Board’s next game night.
Thai Seasons, the Brick-yard Café, the Lawrenceburg Public Library and Ivy Tech supplied door prizes, so there were many winners last Satur-day morning.
“All in the Family,” Barb Dickhaus and John Humphrey were the 1st place winners in the traditional division, with the Scrabblers, Lynn Bleha, Opal McHone, and Melody
Garland. In the Speed Division, the
Blanks, Tim Kleier, Steve and Cheryl Walton, took 1st place, followed closely by the Bean Sisters - Beth Merk and Angie Smits.
Judge Humphrey and Ron Nicholson served as judges, Lisa Jarman and Josh Wick-izer served as experts, Margie Kleier and Barb SIgmon vali-dated scores.
The event raised just over $300 for the Hoosier Hills Lit-eracy League.
The League would like to recognize the sponsors for this year’s Scrabble Without Scruples - the Dearborn/Ohio County Bar Association and the K-Media.
