THE ROAD TO ASIA FESTIVAL 2007 As we say goodbye to summer and head into fall, anticipation for The Road to Asia Festival is building. Mark your calendars for the weekend of Saturday November 3 and Sunday November 4, 2007 as this weekend will have the JCCC packed with the richness and exciting diversity of many Asian cultures. Kobayashi Hall will feature a variety of dance, theatrical and music performances on the main stage. There will also be a cultural marketplace featuring arts and crafts demonstrations and merchandise from all across the Asian region. If martial arts are what you want, the dojo will feature virtually non-stop demonstrations. Finally, a visit to The Road to Asia Festival will not be complete unless you sample some of the delicacies featured in the food court. The Road to Asia Festival takes the JCCC’s motto of “Friendship Through Culture” to a whole new level. With last year’s participants representing countries like Tibet, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka, India, Taiwan, and, of course, Japan, and over 3,000 people in attendance, you won’t want to miss this huge two-day festival of Asian Canadian culture. So gather your family and friends and join us for another exciting trip along The Road to Asia!

Date: Saturday November 3 and Sunday November 4, 2007Time: 11:00am to 5:00pmAdmission: $5 Adults, $3 Seniors/Students, JCCC members and children 12 & under are FREE

SHAMISEN WORKSHOP AT THE JCCCThe shamisen, or Japanese 3-stringed banjo, is the instrument most people associate with geisha. It is also the folk instrument of everyday people, played at festivals throughout Japan. There are very few shamisen teachers in North America, so here’s your chance to try your hand at this unique Japanese instrument. Participants will learn the basic components of the shamisen, how to hold the instrument and its plectrum correctly, basic tunings, basic techniques, and how to read simple music. No prior musical experience is necessary and you don’t need to be able to read or speak Japanese to take part. Students are welcome to bring their own instruments and accessories. A limited number of shamisen sets will be available for rent to use on JCCC premises during the workshop.

Date: Thursday October 18 and Friday October 19, 2007Time: 6:30pm to 9:30pm both eveningsCost: $100 + GST for JCCC members $110 + GST for non-members Shamisen rental: $20 (payable to instructor)

The workshop will be taught by Linda Kakō Caplan – a Dai Shihan (Grandmaster) of the Ikuta-ryu Chikushikai koto and shamisen school in Fukuoka, Japan. She has studied koto and shamisen in Japan, Canada and the U.S., and has performed at events in those three countries for almost twenty-five years. Her teaching style is a comfortable blend of traditional and modern methods.

RONIN GAI: THE STREET OF MASTER-LESS SAMURAI

Join us in October for another popular jidaigeki samurai action drama! Kazuo Kuroki’s international award-winning period drama was produced in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the death of Shozo Makino, “the father of Japanese films.” Set in the 1830s near the end of the age of the samurai, Ronin Gai is populated by an ensemble of colourful characters, social outcasts who patronize a restaurant and brothel on the outskirts of Edo. Among them are prostitutes and master-less samurai reduced to drunkenness and debauchery. When a rogue band of the local shogun’s retainers start killing the prostitutes in a ruthless, self-righteous murder spree, the drunken samurai must sober up and retaliate, leading to a climactic showdown in which they find a chance to redeem themselves in true samurai fashion. Ronin Gai also marks the final appearance of Shintaro Katsu, the Japanese actor best known for his title role in the long-lasting Zatoichi film series. The film also stars Yoshio Harada and Kanako Higuchi. The film is full of drama, intrigue and some quite bloody violence. The film is recommended for fans of the genre but is definitely not for children or the faint of heart. (Warning: Contains scenes of violence and some adult situations)

Date: Thursday October 25, 2007Time: 7:00pmAdmission: $5 for JCCC members, $7 for non-members

CLASS BROCHURE CORRECTIONThe Washi Greeting Card workshop in November 2007 is on Wednesday November 21 NOT Thursday as stated in the 2007 Fall Class and Activities brochure. We apologize for the error.

SPEAKER SERIESREVISITING THE REDRESS MOVEMENT

WITH BILL KOBAYASHI & YUKI MIZUYABUThe Speaker Series launches a new season of talks on Friday October 19, 2007 with two Toronto Redress activists who helped to toward the Redress Agreement on September 22, 1988. Mr. Bill Kobayashi was one of the founding members of the Toronto Chapter of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) in the mid-1980s. Born in Vancouver and raised in the Kitsilano area. With the west coast expulsion of Japanese Canadians, his family moved to Blind Bay, B.C. in 1942, then to Kamloops. His family subsequently moved to Montreal where his community activism with wife Addie began with the 1977 JC Centennial project. The son of fisherman Tsumejiro and Moto, Mr. Yuki Mizuyabu was born in Nanaimo, B.C. in February 1929. Interned in Lemon

Creek until July 1946, the family was deported to Japan where they settled with relatives in Miomura, Wakayama-ken. Yuki worked in Japan as a translator and telephone switchboard operator with the U.S. Army before joining their Intelligence Unit in Okinawa. When he returned to Canada in 1961, all of his siblings had already resettled in Toronto. A retired Toronto city hall employee, Mr. Mizuyabu was an active supporter of the NAJC during the redress movement.

Join us in the JCCC Heritage Lounge for what is certain to be a lively and informative evening. Relive the days before, during and following the Redress Agreement with two Nisei whose wartime experiences give them both very different perspectives on what is one of the most important human rights victories in Canadian history. The talk will begin at 7:30pm and will be hosted by “Nikkei Voice” writer Norm Ibuki. Green tea and manju will be available afterwards. Admission is free. There will also be a special book reading by author Gail Tsukiyama in the Heritage Lounge at 6:30pm so please come early.

HERITAGE GOURMET TOUR OF JAPAN MARCH 28 TO APRIL 10, 2008

Lovers of Japanese food and beverages are invited to join the JCCC Heritage Committee on a tour of Japan to explore the culinary delights of this ancient island nation. The backbone of all great cuisines is the ingredients that make up the foundation of a dish and Japanese cooking, developed over thousands of years, is no different. With this in mind, we will visit traditional manufacturers of miso, shoyu, vinegar, rice, dried bonito, tofu, nori and fruit. To assist us to digest these delicacies there will be visits to manufacturers of sake, shochu, beer, whisky, wine and fine tea. As an added bonus, provided by nature, we will be able to enjoy all this under the canopy of sakura blossoms. For further information please contact your tour leader, Ken Noma at: [email protected].

1ST ANNUAL SANSEI PUB NIGHT REVISITED

The JCCC would like to revive the old “pub nite” from the 1970s. It has been such a long time since the Sansei gathered at the Centre for a social event, so it’s definitely time to try and get together. Please get in touch with your family and friends and tell them to join you for an evening of fun,

reminiscing, laughter, sharing of photos and telling of tall tales of the good old days. This invitation is extended to anyone who would like to meet others from this generation, whether you’re Sansei or not, whether you’re Japanese or not. If you enjoy classic rock and disco music, then come and join in! The more the merrier! The festivities will take place in the Kobayashi Hall on Saturday October 20, 2007 from 8:00pm to 1:00am. For more information, please call Dawna Kobayashi at 416-431-0296 or email at: [email protected].

NIHONGO ART CONTEST 2007by Gendai Gallery

Nihongo Art Contest is a unique exhibition of artworks by children using art to help them learn the Japanese language. This year’s juried exhibition includes over 215 drawings – from the whimsical to the sublime -- by children across Ontario in grades 1 to 12 currently studying the Japanese language. The exhibition opens on Saturday October 13, 2007 from 2:30pm-4:30pm at the Gendai Gallery located in the JCCC and continues until October 31, 2007. Opening events on October 13 will include a fun art and language workshop open to children of all ages, and an awards presentation for the top winning entries. The Nihongo Art Contest was founded in 2004 by Yukie Uchida, a teacher of Japanese at Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton. She invented a unique method of teaching: she asked students to draw pictures that incorporated Japanese characters to embody a word’s meaning in the drawing itself. With the support of the Japan Foundation, the Ontario-wide contest was established open to young students of the Japanese language. “The Nihongo Art Contest presents a fun side to language acquisition,” said contest president, Michiyo Uchida. “It is exciting to see how words can inspire great visual creativity.” The exhibition and contest is co-hosted by the organizing committee of the Nihongo Art Contest and the Gendai Gallery. It is generously supported by The Consulate General of Japan in Toronto, The Japan Foundation, Toronto, The Japan National Tourist Organization, The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, James Moto Enterprises Inc., Hillfield Strathallan College, and Kokugo Kyoshitsu. For more information, please visit www.nihongoart.org or www.gendaigallery.org.
