KEY INFORMATIONTitle The Rock It is an interesting title because it is the nickname of the prison in which this film is set Alcatraz Island.Genre(s) Action, Thriller, AdventureProduction Company Hollywood PicturesInformation was taken from

An alternate DVD cover for The RockMOREDirector Michael BayMain Lead Actor (s) Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage and Ed Harris. Sean Connery John Patrick Mason. Nicholas Cage Stanley Goodspeed. Ed Harris General Francis X Hummel.

A snapshot of one of the best car chases Ive seen in any film.4Shot types and Camera Angles

Low angled establishing shot.

Group shot.

Close-up.This is effective because it shows where the scene starts at a low angle so that the people to the left are silhouettes and the viewer cant tell who or what they are . This makes the audience curious as to what happens in the film. This is effective because it shows all of the soldiers and the coffin that they are carrying. This makes the audience feel upset for the soldiers. This is effective because it shows how Hummel is feeling and is (potentially) planning something that will get him branded a terrorist/traitor to America. This causes the audience to wonder what Hummel is up to.Camera Movements

ToPanning right with Hummel in its view. This enables the audience to see that he is a key character to the story. This shows the audience that he moved to a grave quite far from his original position.Transitions

To

Cut from 1st to 2nd snapshot. This then means that the audience can see the different settings. This makes the audience believe that the two events occur at the same time.SoundNon-diegetic: Music, Radio-chatter.Diegetic: Sergeant giving orders for gunshots(21-gun-salute), Hummel talking to his wifes grave.

Mise-en-sceneSet: A military graveyard.Lighting: All natural and so quite dark.Costumes: U.S marine formal dress.Make-up: Gives a sad effect but little used.Props: M4/M16 assault rifles, MOH (Medal of Honour), rings, dog-tags, military helicopters.Acting/Dialogue: Acting like military personnel, Radio-Chatter is distressed, While Hummel talks to his wifes grave he is calm and collected. These all make the audience feel as though they are at a real military funeral/grave.

Shows that Hummel has given up his MOH. The viewer can assume from here that he is doing something that can have him called a terrorist. Why else would anyone give up an MOH than if there were deserting/betraying/defecting from their country or if they felt that they no longer deserved said medal. This once again causes doubt in the audiences mind as to Hummels allegiance. The film is about Stanley Goodspeed (played by Nicholas Cage), a nerve gas scientist, who, with the help of ex-prisoner of Alcatraz John Patrick Mason (played by Sean Connery) breaks into Alcatraz and SPOILER and SPOILER. This all happens because an ex-military general, Francis X Hummel, takes control of the prison and demands a ransom to be given to the families of dead soldiers who were never given any compensation after their loved ones die in covert-ops.PLOT

After the scene in which the viewer sees the effect of the VX Nerve Toxin on the human body by watching one of Hummels men die after being exposed.Distributers.Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Brazil) (DVD) Buena Vista Home Entertainment (1996) (Spain) (DVD) Buena Vista Home Video (1997) (Netherlands) (VHS) Buena Vista Home Video (1997) (Sweden) (VHS) Buena Vista Home Video (2001) (Sweden) (DVD) Divisa Home Video (2014) (Spain) (DVD) Hollywood Pictures Home Video (1997) (Netherlands) (VHS) Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (2002) (Sweden) (DVD) Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (2007) (Sweden) (Blu-ray) (DVD) Buena Vista Pictures (1996) (USA) (theatrical) Buena Vista International (Sweden) (1996) (Sweden) (theatrical) Buena Vista International (1996) (Argentina) (theatrical) Buena Vista International (1996) (Germany) (theatrical) Buena Vista International (1996) (Netherlands) (theatrical) Gaumont Buena Vista International (GBVI) (1996) (France) (theatrical) Lauren film (1996) (Spain) (theatrical) Hollywood Pictures Home Video (1996) (USA) (VHS) (pan and scan) Hollywood Pictures Home Video (1996) (USA) (video) (laserdisc) Audio Visual Enterprises (1997) (Greece) (VHS) Buena Vista Home Video (1997) (USA) (DVD) Criterion Collection, The (1997) (USA) (video) (laserdisc)
