THE ROLE OF TOPONYMY IN INDONESIA “MUDIK” ACTIVITIES
Mudik or going to one’s hometown is atraditional phenomenon in Indonesia duringEid-ul-fitr holidays seasons. As the mostnumber of moslems population country inthe world, this annually phenomenonhappens massively during Eid-ul-Fitr, which inthis year happened in the last week of Juneuntil the first week of July in the year of 2017.Approximately, there will be estimated moreor less 25 million “mudikers” involved in Javaand Bali island itself.
The mass movement of approximately 25million “mudikers” in Java island at about thesame time, inevitably causes traffic densitiesin some road segments. For that reason, theGeospatial Information Agency of Indonesia(BIG) launched the “Mudik Map 2017” for theregions of Java and Bali islands. This maputilizes standardized geographical namesrecommended by the National NamesAuthority as the main identifier. The “Mudik Map” contains alternative roadpaths and surrounding public utilities andguided the mudikers the best route to theirown destinatinations. In addition, this mapalso gives information on some nearbytourist destinations that can be visited duringthe mudikers settled at their hometowns.Standardized geographical names of placesand destination are important for mudikersas a guidance and well information
