TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Moses tells the people to always observe the statutes God has given them, without adding or subtracting from these laws. He reminds them that the law is just, and that any nation who heard their statutes would consider them a wise nation. Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 James discusses the gifts that God has given to all people and implores them to respond by welcoming the words of truth that can save them. He emphasizes that through good deeds and pure conduct, our faith in God is proven to him. Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 The Pharisees observed some of Jesus’ disciples eating without first purifying their hands and ask the disciples why they are going against their ancestor’s traditions. Jesus responds that nothing from the outside can make a person impure. The only true evil, acts such as fornication, murder, and greed among others, come from within and make a person impure.

From Fr. Charlie Dear Friends in Christ, One of the sad realities that we face in our world is the persecutions of Christians, especially in the Middle East. This week, a man is going to be beatified. A beatification (from the Latin words beatus – blessed and facere – to make) is the recognition accorded by the Catholic Church of a deceased person’s entrance into Heaven and a capacity to intercede on behalf of individuals who pray in his or her name. Being declared a “Blessed” of the Church is one step below being canonized a saint. On August 29th, Flavianus Michael Malke will be beatified in Lebanon. He was born YaQub Malke in the year 1858 in a village called Kalat’ul Mara. Today, it is part of modern day Turkey. Back then, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Although raised in the Orthodox faith, he converted to Syriac Catholicism and became a religious brother. Upon entering religious life, he received the names Flavianus Michael. After his ordination to the priesthood on May 13, 1883, he served several villages around the city of Aleppo. In 1895, a terrible persecution broke out against Christians. Father Malke’s parish church was destroyed and several of his parishioners were killed, including his own mother. When the persecutions lessened, he was ordained the bishop of Gazireh. In 1915, Bishop Malke heard that another persecution against Christians was going to take place. He was warned by several people to leave his diocese. He refused. His exact words were, “No! I will shed by blood for my sheep!” Bishop Malke was arrested on August 28, 2015. He was given a choice between conversion to Islam or death. When he refused to convert, he was literally beaten to death and then beheaded. Bishop Malke will be beatified on August 29th, exactly one hundred years after his martyrdom. The Mass will be celebrated by the Patriarch of Antioch, Monsignor Ignatius Youssef III Younan. In his announcement, Monsignor Youssef had this to say: “In these painful times experienced by Christians, especially in Iraq and Syria, the news of the beatification of one of their martyrs will surely bring encouragement and consolation to face today’s trials of appalling dimension.” Thousands of Iraqi and Syrian Christians displaced by the on-going war will be present for Bishop Melke’. Monsignor Youssef concluded his announcement with a prayer asking for Bishop Melke’s intercession in helping those suffering persecution, especially in the Middle East: “Blessed Martyr Michael, intercede for us and protect especially the Christians in the Middle East and all the world in these hard and painful days. Amen.” God bless you!
