THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Sirach emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s parents. He explains that spiritual riches will come to those who are kind to their mother and father. Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul advises us to treat each other with kindness and mercy and to forgive as God forgives us. His words remind families to always love and respect one another and let Christ’s peace reign in their hearts and in their homes. Gospel: Luke 2:41-52 When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. Jesus did not return with the company. Instead, he stayed in Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers while amazing them with his understanding and questions. When found by his concerned parents, Jesus reminded them that he must be in the house of his Father. Returning together, Mary kept these things in her heart.

Our True Home

Scott Hahn Reflects on

The Feast of the Holy Family

Why did Jesus choose to become a baby born of a mother and father and to spend all but His last years living in an ordinary human family? In part, to reveal God's plan to make all people live as one “holy family” in His Church (see 2 Corinthians 6:16-18).

In the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, God reveals our true home. We're to live as His children, “chosen ones, holy and beloved,” as the First Reading puts it.

The family advice we hear in today's readings – for mothers, fathers and children – is all solid and practical. Happy homes are the fruit of our faithfulness to the Lord, we sing in today's Psalm. But the Liturgy is inviting us to see more, to see how, through our family obligations and relationships, our families become heralds of the family of God that He wants to create on earth.

Jesus shows us this in today's Gospel. His obedience to His earthly parents flows directly from His obedience to the will of His heavenly Father. Joseph and Mary aren't identified by name, but three times are called “his parents” and are referred to separately as his “mother” and “father.” The emphasis is all on their “familial” ties to Jesus. But these ties are emphasized only so that Jesus, in the first words He speaks in Luke's Gospel, can point us beyond that earthly relationship to the Fatherhood of God.

In what Jesus calls “My Father's house,” every family finds its true meaning and purpose (see Ephesians 3:15). The Temple we read about in the Gospel today is God's house, His dwelling (see Luke 19:46). But it's also an image of the family of God, the Church (see Ephesians 2:19-22; Hebrews 3:3-6; 10:21).

In our families we're to build up this household, this family, this living temple of God. Until He reveals His new dwelling among us, and says of every person: “I shall be his God and he will be My son” (see Revelation 21:3,7).

Special Collection for Catholic

Communications and Catholic University

The Catholic University of America is unique among universities in the United States - even among Catholic Universities. Established by Pope Leo XIII and the U.S. Bishops in 1887, it is the national university of the Catholic Church. In addition to alumni who live in your diocese, more than one third of the U.S. bishops and 12,000 priests and religious are Catholic University Alumni, including five of the six American Cardinal Archbishops. Through its 12 schools and 23 research centers located in the nation’s capital, every year the University provides an education grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition to almost 7,000 students. Next weekend, we will be taking up the National Collection for the Catholic University. Your investment will enable the University to continue to support the Church and to advance its work of preparing the next generation of leadership, both religious and lay, of our Church and nation. Thank you for your generosity. You can learn more at: collection.catholic.edu

Prayer Page

O Holy Family of Nazareth

O Holy Family of Nazareth, community of love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, model and ideal of every Christian family, to you we entrust our families. Open the heart of every family to the faith, to welcoming the Word of God, to Christian witness, so that it becomes a source of new and holy vocations. Touch the hearts of parents, so that with prompt charity, wise care, and loving devotion they be for their sons and daughters, sure guides towards spiritual and eternal values. Stir up the hearts of young people a right conscience and a free will, so that growing in "wisdom, age and grace," they might welcome generously the gift of a Divine vocation. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that all of us, contemplating and imitating the assiduous prayer, generous obedience, dignified poverty and virginal purity lived out in your midst, might set about fulfilling the will of God and accompanying with far-sighted sensitivity those among us who are called to follow more closely the Lord Jesus, who "has given Himself for us" (cf. Gal 2:20). Amen!

Prayer before Reading the Bible

Our Father, who art in heaven, sacred is Your Word. Your kingdom come,

Your Words be heard on earth as they are in heaven.

Give us today Your Sacred Word. Forgive our neglect of it in the past as we forgive those who neglect us.

Lead us toward an encounter with You each time we delve into the Scriptures.

For Your presence, Your power, and Your glory are ever present among us ow and forever. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight,

and give Your Angels and Your Saints charge over those who sleep.

Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ. rest Your weary ones, bless Your dying ones,

soothe Your suffering ones, pity Your afflicted ones, shield Your joyous ones,

and all for Your love's sake. by Saint Augustine

Prayer for the Bishop

Heavenly Father, in these trying times, when the spirit of the age threatens Christian values, give our bishop holiness of life and wisdom to direct and guide our (arch)diocesan family so that we may grow in your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Catholic Online Prayers

Prayer for Priests Almighty God look upon the face of Jesus who is the eternal High Priest and have compassion on Your priests in today’s world. They are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation. Keep them close to You so the enemy may not prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.

O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests, for the unfaithful and tepid ones; for those laboring at home and abroad in distant mission fields; for those who are tempted; for those who are lonely and desolate; for those who are young; for those who are dying; and for those who are in purgatory. But above all, I recommend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I have assisted and who gave me Your body and blood in Holy Communion; the priests who instructed me or helped me by their encouragement. I pray devoutly for all the priests to who I am indebted in any other way, in particular for (name of priest). O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity.

Amen. ***

O Mary, queen of Clergy, pray for us; obtain for us many and holy priests.

Good night Prayer

Lord, our God, restore us again by the repose of sleep after the fatigue of our daily work: so that, continually renewed by your help, we may serve you in body and soul. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
