The Liturgical Week Today’s Readings

Feeding The World

Readings for the Week

First Reading — Elisha feeds a hundred people with twenty barley loaves (2 Kings 4:42-44).

Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145).

Second Reading — Paul urges the Ephesians to live in a manner worthy of the call they received (Ephesians 4:1-6).

Gospel —Jesus feeds a large crowd with five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:1-15).

The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and al-ways seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day.

Altar Server Training

We are in great need of altar servers and would like to encourage all youth from 3rd grade (entering 3rd grade in September 2015) to high school seniors to consider joining this ministry. The only requirement is that you have received your First Holy Communion.

For those who are interested in becoming an altar server, there is an additional opportunity to attend an Altar Server Training Session with Father Keith.

(Only one session needs to be attended.) The first session was held on Friday, July 24th. If you missed this session, you can attend the second training on Tuesday, August 4th at 7:00 pm in the Church.

Whether your parents have already discussed your interest of being an Altar Server with Fr. Keith or you are now considering joining this ministry, please have them contact Fr. Keith to let him know which session you plan on attending.

If you are interested and want to learn more about serving in this ministry, please have your parents contact Fr. Keith at [email protected].

Thanks for considering serving our parish!

News From The Commission For Christian Service

IHN Note

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the October 8th cocktail party at the USGA in Far Hills has been postponed and will be rescheduled in 2016. Thank you for your continued support of IHN.

Guatemala Partnership News

If you would like to send a note or card of encouragement to any of the 15 students that St. Bernard parish is supporting in Guatemala, you can do so by dropping off the note/card at the parish office. There is a mail slot for Guatemala in the office.

The next delegation is traveling in late August and can hand-carry your note or card. You can send it to a specific student if you have contributed to a sponsorship or just write a general note of encouragement. We will take care of the translation.

Get your notes in by August 15th so we can translate to Spanish. Any questions, contact Karen Castellon at [email protected] or 908-240-9941.

Thank you for your generosity in sponsoring these students.

Thank You!

Thank you to all who supported Fair Trade during Donut Sunday. We appreciate the efforts of our 7th and 8th grade confirmation candidates and their parents who staffed the tables in the vestibule and cafeteria. For Spring 2015 (March thru June), the Fair Trade sales of our parish and Immaculate Conception in Clinton yielded a contribution of $632 for the Guatemala Scholarship program. The Scholarship program, with contributions from 5 parishes, now supports 80 students and their families in grades 2 through high school.

Papal Visit

Join the Diocese of Metuchen delegation

for this historic first visit of Pope Francis to the United States The Diocese of Metuchen invites you to participate in a pilgrimage to Philadelphia for the Mass to be celebrated there by Pope Francis on September 27, 2015. The Holy Father announced last November that he will come to Philadelphia for the eighth World Meeting of Families being held there. He will celebrate a public Mass with a million or more participants on Sunday, September 27 on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in full view of the crowds arrayed from the museum down the Ben Franklin Parkway. No tickets are required for the Mass. No general seating will be available. The Mass is a standing event. The Diocese has made arrangements for bus transportation from various locations throughout the diocese. A number of parishes/groups are also running bus trips to the Papal Mass. The Papal Mass is tentatively scheduled for 4:00 pm. The exact schedule is not yet available from the event planners in Philadelphia, but we anticipate very early departure times. Once we have a clear picture of the number of people who want to participate from each site, we will assign bus coordinators and send confirmation materials with precise details. Prayer and reflection resources will also be provided to enable pilgrims to share a common experience as the Diocesan Church in preparation for and on the day of this special event. The round trip bus reservation and pilgrimage package will be approximately $55 per person. Each participant is responsible for their own meal costs on that day and also any train/shuttle expenses from the parking lot to the event site and back. Pilgrims should be physically fit and prepared to walk several miles. Reservations for bus seats are limited and will be accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. For those interested in reserving a bus seat, you may do so starting on July 8, 2015 using the preferred online method by visiting: www.diometuchen.org/WMOF. You may also register via phone by calling 732-562-1990 ext. 1543 during the hours of 10:00 am -1:00 pm, Monday thru Friday starting on July 8, 2015. All payments will be by credit card only. Space is limited. There will be no refunds. Once the seats are filled, a waiting list will be formed. All participants must make payment and agree to the Trip Terms and Conditions before reservations will be confirmed. Additional details regarding the Pilgrimage will be sent out at the end of the summer. Bus Trip Pick-Up Locations:

Parish Life at St. Bernard

Sacramental Life at St. Bernard

Parish Membership

Welcome Newcomers! So that we might provide for all of your sacramental and pastoral needs, we would like to officially welcome and register you in the parish. If you haven’t already done so, please call the Parish Office to begin your registration process.

Parishioners are reminded that we can best serve you if we have accurate information in our Parish Census program. Please call the Parish Office with any changes in your ad-dress, phone number, family status, etc. or if you notice any misinformation in any correspondence you might receive from us.

Catechetical Formation

Students in grades Pre-K through 8 are provided Catholic instruction and sacramental preparation by our Catechetical Formation staff and parent volunteers. Parish membership is required for enrollment in our program. Please call our Office of Catechetical Formation to register your child for classes.

Youth Ministry

Our youth are an active part of our ministry here at St. Bernard. Our parish Senior High Youth Group welcomes all high school youth to our Sunday events and youth friendly Mass. Those who are looking to go deeper can join our Service and Leadership Team (SALT) which meets weekly for Bible study and planning. Meetings are held in The Lighthouse, our very own room on the third floor of the Parish Center. Please call the Youth Ministry Office for details. Join Us!

Young Builder’s Club at St. Bernard

As part of our Youth Ministry program, we offer our Young Builder’s Club one Saturday each month for children aged 3 to 10, with a parent. Using the K’nex build-ing toys, the group encourages teamwork and social interaction. Each meeting opens with prayer and song. Watch the bulletin for upcoming events.

Pre-School and Kindergarten at St. Bernard

Welcome to St. Bernard Pre-School and Kindergarten! Our programs are available to all! We are licensed by the state of NJ and offer a 3 half-day, a 5 half-day, or a 5 full-day program, which includes extended care. Our hours of oper-ation are 7:30 am – 5:30 pm for Extended Care and 9:00 am – 11:30 am for our half-day programs. Children must be 3 years old by December 31st of the school year in which they are enrolled to be eligible for our pre-school program.

We offer a challenging and exciting full-day Kindergarten Program. Our school is open from September through June.

Baptism

Expectant and adoptive parents are required to attend our Baptism preparation class. It is best to call the Parish Office at least four months before your child’s birth or in the case of adoption, upon completion of the adoption process. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

Individuals who have never been baptized, baptized Christians from other denominations, and baptized Catholics who have never received the Sacraments of first Eucharist and Confirmation, and who are interested in becoming full participants in the Catholic faith are invited to call the Parish Office to begin the Inquiry process. The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Saturday: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM, or by appointment The Celebration of the Eucharist

Monday— Friday (Chapel): 8:00 AM & 12:10 PM (12:10 PM suspended in July and August)

Sunday: SUMMER SCHEDULE: 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, and 11:30 AM

Arrangements with the Church for a wedding should be made approximately one year prior to the desired date. Participation in a Diocesan Pre-Cana program will assist couples in their preparation for the sacrament of Matrimony. Catholics who have been away from the Church and the Sacraments need to re-establish their Church and Sacramental life as a pre-requisite for marriage. Sacrament of the Sick - Homebound

We encourage you to call the Parish Office to make arrangements for either the Celebration of the Anointing of the Sick or for the Eucharist to be brought to the sick, the elderly, and the homebound.

Please call the Pre-School / Kindergarten Office for further information and watch the bulletin for open-house, registration and enrollment information!
