THINK that if Iwere required tosurvey the field of

human weakness-es as revealed inthe many thous-ands of lettersthat have passedthrough my handsin the past fifteenye ars o r mo refrom men andw o m e n i n a l lwalks of life who

are seeking to untangle some of theirserious problems and lift themselves outof the dire situations in which they havebecome involved, and to select onehuman weakness or evil tendency thatis responsible above all others for theunhappy conditions which human be-ings bring upon themselves, I wouldselect thealmost universal weakness ofinsincerity as the most serious and themost vicious.

Not only does insincerity lead to thewearing of a cloak of hypocrisy, whichinjures the reputation and the fortunatetrend of conditions for the individual sofar as external matters are concerned;

but the growth and development of aninsincere attitude toward one or more ofthe important principles of life breaksdown the inner power of the individualand makes such a person incapable ofadjusting himself to the true nature ofthings throughout the world.

The person who is insincere in regardto one or more matters of immediateand serious interest to him is uncon-sciously creating a fictitious and arti-ficial attitude toward other and perhapsunknown conditions in life. Such a per-

son severs a large portion of the naturalCosmic attunement which brings himintuitive revelations and impressions

and most certainly prohibits that humanattunement with the mass of mankindwhich makes for happy companionships,dependable friendships, and a correctunderstanding of human relationships.

It is only natural that each and everyone of us should shun in all of our dailyaffairs and in our social and pastimeactivities the person who is discoveredto be insincere in his general attitude.Even those who have a tendency them-selves to be insincere are impressed withthe doubtful character and unreliable

nature of a person who is insincere inany of his normal and natural actions inlife.

Perhaps in two of the largest andmost important fields of human en-deavor on earth we find the greatestamount of insincerity where it wouldseem that the least amount should befound. I refer to religion and business.There is no doubt about the fact that in-sincerity is one of the fundamentalcauses of failure in business.

Some years ago, and perhaps for

some centuries, it was believed that en-thusiasm was the sign of sincerity.When we found an individual greatlyenthusiastic in regard to his business orvocational occupation, we believed thatthe enthusiasm was the result of his sin-cerity and that the two combined werefoundation stones upon which successwould inevitably build its great reward.W e believed that even the young personor the neophyte in the business worldwho manifested extreme enthusiasmabout his particular commercial activity

demonstrated his sincerity and wasbound to reap the reward of good for-tune.

Likewise, we believed that enthusiasmin religion was an indication of sincer-ity, and there was a tendency on the

part of mankind to think that the moreenthusiasm— even fanaticism— the reli-gious person revealed, the more sincerehe was and undoubtedly the more piousand more blessed. This belief led toostentatious and artificial displays ofenthusiastic religious fervor on the partof those who wanted us to believe thatsuch an attitude indicated their sincerityand their worthiness of our respect andour support.

I recall the days when a certainuniquely religious leader of a new and

very fanciful religious cult, having itsheadquarters in the midwest, made amost bombastic and enthusiastic cam-paign in New York City, casting asideall of the conservative, dignified, ration-al methods of proselyting, public speak-ing, exhorting, and imploring in an at-tempt to take advantage of the humantendency to believe that extreme en-thusiasm was a positive indication ofprofound sincerity. But as days andweeks passed this man soon revealedthat thousands in the midwest had mis-taken his enthusiasm, for he was not

only insincere but positively hypocriticaland deliberately deceiving. Fo r a num-ber of years his wild form of enthusiasmhad misled the thinking of sane and ra-tional people.

In the business world today, especial-ly in North America where the co n-servative and dignified forms of propa-ganda are not rigidly followed, extremeenthusiasm and elaborate exaggerationsof expression and attitude have becomequite common, and while keen competi-tion in every line, even in the business

of conducting a church on a selfsus-taining basis, has developed to a highdegree and the utmost of genuine en-thusiasm must be used to make a suc-cess of business, the degree of this en-thusiasm is no longer a dependableguide as to the sincerity of the in-dividual, the nature of his business, orthe product which he offers for our con-sideration.

W e have discovered in recent yearsthrough very bitter lessons that, after

all, there is a point in the developmentand expression of enthusiasm where itsnature is indicative of insincerity ratherthan sincerity, and that thousands havetaken advantage of a superficial knowl-edge of human psychology to attempt to

deceive the public by an overdisplay ofartificial enthusiasm. Th e same can besaid in regard to many of the religious,political, and social forms of activities inthe Western World.

It is only natural for the one who issincere to be quite definitely positiveand enthusiastic about his beliefs. Butthere is a vast difference between anenthusiasm that is born of sincerity andan enthusiasm that is artificially createdfalsely to indicate a sincerity that doesnot exist. Th e mere fact that a man is

absolutely enthusiastic about the busi-ness he conducts and the merchandisehe is selling or the product that he isoffering, does not indicate that he issincere about his claims. He may be en-thusiastic solely because of the com-mercial, monetary desires of his heart.

It is a fact known in the analyticalchannels of business ethics that the manwho is sincere only in his desire to makemoney out of his business and not torender service to humanity and supplya worthy article that will meet legitimatedemands, is doomed to failure sooner orlater and will never be able to competewith any other similar business that isbased upon honest sincerity.

All of this has a particular applicationto those men and women who are studi-ously inclined and who devote them-selves more or less to some definitesystem of selfadvancement. I wouldparticularly apply all of this to thestudents of mysticism and personal unfoldment and individual evolution. T othe same degree that the student istruly sincere in his studies and desires

to improve himself will he succeed, andto the same degree that he is superficial-ly or artificially enthusiastic withoutreally being sincere will he fail to findthat which he is seeking and fail to de-rive any benefits from his studies, hisinvestigations, and his applications ofthe principles he is studying.

In my recent visits to the variouscenters of Rosicrucian and other philo-sophical activities in Europe, and in my

contacts with large and small assembliesof men and women in Europe who aredevoting their time very enthusiasticallyto the promotion of such teacings, I wasmost deeply impressed by the extremedegree oi sincerity that was revealed in

their attitudes. Th e very great degreeof enthusiasm or outer form of propa-ganda that is so evident in NorthAmerica is greatly lacking in Europebecause of their ageold belief in beingrather conservative in connection withthings that deal with ethical culture, re-ligion, philosophy, and the higher thingsof life. If we were to judge the degreeof sincerity of these people in Europeby our North American standard of en-thusiasm, we would be greatly deceivedin believing that they were not as de-voted to their work as they really are.

But, it requires only a few hours of as-sociation with them to discover that be-neath the attitude of restrained enthus-iasm there is a very deep and profoundsincerity that is lacking to a large de-gree in North America.

Fortunately for our own Rosicrucianwork and the work of similar move-ments here on this continent, there arethousands who are just as sincere, justas devoted, and just as willing to makesecret and unknown sacrifices in behalfof their devotion as we find in Europe:

but, unfortunately, there are many morethousands in this New W or ld who arenot so sincere and who look upon theirdevotion to this work or their interestin similar matters as a mere incident oflife not requiring the deep sincerity thatis given to other matters. And , thereare millions in this New W or ld who arehardly sincere about anything associ-ated with their lives except the mostmaterialistic forms of personal selfishbenefit.

If we would get the utmost from a

book we are reading, a lesson we arestudying, an exercise that we are prac-ticing, or a thought that we are holdingin meditation, it behooves us to be ex-tremely sincere and devoted to thematter or otherwise cast it aside andgive no thought to it whatever. Th erecan be no halfway or partway inter-est about it if we are to derive any bene-fit from it. W e need not make a reli-gion out of our study of a book; weneed not make a fettish out of our in-

terest in any subje ct to be absolutelysincere, but we must and should deter-mine whether the matter at hand isworthy of the time and the attention weare giving to it, or whether we wouldbenefit more from devoting our interest

to something else. If we conclude thatthe thing is worthy of our time and con-centrated attention, then we shoulddevelop an attitude of deepest sincerityand make it truly a part of our innerselves as well as a part of our outerconsciousness.

In nearly every case where personshave written to our Council of Solaceand welfare department for assistancein the improvement of personal condi-tions, we have found that while therewas an anxiety to apply certain good

advice and helpful instruction, therewas lacking a degree of sincerity in thevery fundamentals and inner nature ofthe system being followed. It is a dif-ficult thing to reveal to some persons,for the lack of sincerity has been sucha human weakness as to become sub-conscious, so to speak, and unnoticeable even to those who are suffering themost from it.

I am eliminating from considerationhere, of course, those persons who aremanifestly insincere and who are aware

of their own insincerity and who areseeking only to take advantage of everyfortunate condition while posing to beheartily in accord with the ideals backof such situations. Unfortuna tely, wefind these persons in every walk of life,in every organization, and in every planand scheme of human interest. Fo rweeks, months, or years they may weara selfdesigned and selfcolored cloakof sincerity by which they deceive manywhile planning to take advantage ofthe genuineness and sincerity of others.

And even when their insincerity is dis-covered it is difficult at times to revealit to others and to eliminate them fromthe false position they occupy. Probablythis is a part of the evil in the worldwith which we must all contend, andprobably all of us have some degree ofsuch sinfulness in our makeup.

Nevertheless, there are those in theworld who are so sincere in their devo-tion to some higher things of life thatwe are forced to overlook any weak-

nesses they may have and try to redeemthese persons and lead them on a paththat brings greater happiness and suc-cess. But I must again point out theunquestionable fact that to the same de-gree that we are sincere, privately, sec-

retly sincere, in whatever we are doingand in whatever we are promoting and

supporting, or advocating and adopting,to that degree will we derive the utmost

benefit from it and assist others in de-

riving a similar benefit. So our success

in life can be accurately guaged by the

degree of sincerity that dominates all ofour thinking and acting.

representative officially attending theConvention, but every member who de-sires to do so may also attend andparticipate in all of the instructive, con-structive, inspiring sessions and featuresof the daily program.

A visit to California is always thedream of every American who has notbeen here, and travel by railroad orautomobile is so safe, so economical,and so pleasant these days that a tripacross our great continent to the W es t

Coast, and a vacation spent in Califor-nia should be planned by everyone whocan possibly get away from business orsocial affairs for a few weeks.

Our Convention will last for the oneweek beginning July H and ending July20. During that time there will beample opportunity for sightseeing andfor enjoying all of the historical andfascinating side trips in this section ofCalifornia. And on the way to the Con-vention, and after it is ended, our visit-ors have the opportunity of sight-seeing in San Francisco, Los Angeles,Hollywood, and other places. Thin k ofthe pleasure of being here among thosemen and women who think as you do,who agree with your viewpoint of life,who are anxious to discuss with you theproblems and trials, the illuminating andinspiring experiences and revelations

that have come into their lives, andwho want to foster and encourage thegreat work of our organization; andthink of the contact with the supremeofficers, and with persons in all walksof life! And then there are the morning,afternoon, and evening lectures, discus-sions, and open forums. Yo u will bepermitted to have interviews with thehighest officers, to visit all of the de-partments of the organization, and seethem at work, to go through the beauti-

been brought from other sections andtransplanted, and there are shrubs andflowers of all kinds, a fountain withcolored lights in the evening, and everyconvenience for little group meetingsand experimental sessions of a privatenature, all in a beautiful surroundingwith ideal conditions.

Make your plans now to come to theConvention next July. Come and parti-cipate in the discussions and make sug-gestions as to how the work of the or-ganization can be improved, and how itsadministrative features may be amended

and made more efficient, how additionalelements of help to the members insolving their problems may be incor-porated in the work of the lectures, andof the various welfare and advisory de-partments. Our membership today is larger thanit ever was. All of our activities havebeen greatly increased, and in everyphysical and spiritual standard, we areup to normal conditions and beyond,despite the recent depression. W e havepassed the quarter century mark in the

history of our organization in its presentcycle here in America, and now let usstart the next quarter century periodwith greater enthusiasm and greater in-terest.

sonality constituting the crucible of lifeout of which the new race will evolveand from the fires of which with theirpurging processes, purity of characterand goodness of individuality will form,but we have unreasonable and unsound

differences of opinion more distinctivethan the differences of character andpersonality, more stubborn in their per-sistence to dominate than even the per-sistency of a supermind of a tyrant inthe political world.

Superstition and false beliefs consti-tute the fundamental basis for thesediversified earthly attitudes, but the van-ity of man in insisting that his view-point is right and that all else is wrongis alone accountable for man's wilfuland deliberate defeat of his best inter-

ests through his failure to unify histhoughts.

Much is said at times in our worldly,political affairs regarding the differ-ences of opinion on national and civicmatters and very often we are inclinedto believe that these differences areresponsible for world wars, for strifesand contests that throw the mass ofman suddenly from a fair point of ad-vancement backward to the most primi-tive elements of civilization and animal-istic, instinctive activities. But in thefinal analysis we will find that the greatdifferences in religious thought consti-tute a far more serious detriment toman’s spiritual and worldly progressthan all of his differences of opinion inmatters political and civic.

It is a sad thing to realize as we viewthe earth from our distant vantagepoint that out of the flames that riseabove our cities and nations, that out ofthe smoke and gun fire and gas that isconstantly besmirching th e beautifulaspect of this earth in hundreds ofplaces, that out of the agonizing cries

of those who are dying on the battlefields and those who are suffering thepangs of personal loss in their homes,that out of the scheming and satanic in-ventions of groups of human minds whoare seeking more destructive ways toruin civilization and hold the world inabeyance in its onward progress, wewill find religious intolerance and re-ligious bigotry as one of the keynotes ofall of the differences leading to thishorrible situation.

There is but one God, no matter bywhat name He may be known or inwhat form He may be comprehended bythe individual or groups of individuals.The God of each one’s understandingis the God unto him and unto him as he

comprehends God can he worship andfind peace and salvation. T o him wholifts his heart up in worship and directshis thoughts divinely and seeks to knowGod, the God of the universe, the trueand everliving God will reach out andextend His consciousness, reveal Him-self to the seeker, and in time he whohas dwelt in darkness and has lost hisway in the labyrinth of religious chan-nels and doctrinal chambers will discov-er the true God . It does not behooveanyone, therefore, to criticize and to be

intolerant toward those who are seek-ing or to those who believe they havefound or to those who have only partlycomprehended. So long as they areprayerful and mindful of the urge with-in them to seek God and to seek attunement, they are deserving of our respectand cooperation and our sympathy.

But in thousands of spots in thisgreat garden or earthly kingdom fromthe north to the south and east to west,in the Orient and Occident, in the pri-mitive settlement of the partially civil-

ized communes, to the boastfully ag-grandized cities of modern empires, wefind this challenge in religious thought,this attempt at dictatorship, this readi-ness to destroy others who believe notas we believe, this mockery of the Godof someone else’s heart, this sheddingof blood because of difference of creed.Lives are d e s t r o y e d , magnificenttemples, aspiring to represent the idealsof God, are razed, magnificent works ofart revealing in their hidden strokes thetouch of God’s guiding hand, magnifi-cent instruments of music and soul en-

chantment, are crushed a n d brokenwhile m i l l i o n s are forced to behypocritical in their worship, deceitfulin their attitude, anguished in their de-sires for peace and happiness, anddenied the free and open expression oftheir religious comprehension.

ever understood. O f all the great thingsin life that are truly personal and in-dividualistic and in which every in-dividual should have the utmost freedomof expression and the greatest degreeof privacy in experience, religion of anykind is the most sublime and the mostfundamental to human happiness. Fo runtil religion or a creed of understand-ing can be indulged in freely, whole-heartedly, sympathetically and withoutthe shadow of dictatorship, man willnever find the true ecstatic transcendentpleasures of religious worship.

W e have before us a communicationfrom Sar Hieronymus, the IllustriousRosicrucian Imperator of the countriesof Europe, imploring the Imperator,

supreme officers, and members of theRosicrucian Order in North America toassist him and the other great Mastersthroughout the world in interveningwith all human thoughts and attitudesin the continuance of this religious in-tolerance in all parts of the world. Andhe particularly directs the thoughts ofNorth and South American memberstoward those situations closest to us ina political sense and easily within thescope of our personal influence throughour united thoughts and attitude ofmind. He points out that in one of ourCentral American countries— Mexico—there exists today a flame of intoler-ance that is constantly being fannedinto conflagration as destructive as anyreligious form of persecution in theblack est periods of the past. It is not amatter of political dictatorship or un-rest; it is not a matter of nationalismagainst a kingdom or empire; it is not asituation that is directed by man orwoman controlling the political affairsof the nation. It is something that isborn out of the unsympathetic under-

standing of the mass of people, who,while of different opinion in the lesserconceptions of divine principles, insistthat in the grander conception of Godand the manner in which He is wor-shipped there shall be no other view-point, no other consideration, than thatwhich a minority, or majority, adopt asthe only way.

In Mexico Catholic churches, temples,places of worship of all kinds have beendestroyed or attacked. Severa l distinct

forms of religious worship have beenseverely affected and it may seem tomany that the religious warfare there isconfined to an issue between two formsof ritualism. But the truth of the matteris that wherever any sincere form of

worship on the part of the humble fol-lower is rent asunder and their sacredbirthrights are taken from them, all re-ligion will suffer, for th e spiritualstrength of the country and the peopleis weakened and the possibility of anyform of religious worship becoming freein expression is remote.

And so we who are privileged to liftourselves above the limitations of manmade creeds can reach up into theCathedral of the Soul where all divine-ly attuned beings may meet in peace and

harmony and we who know and believethat there is but one God, the Fatherof all creatures regardless of race, color,religious distinctions or nationality, areasked to remember the people in ourW ester n W orld and in all parts of theworld who are suffering under the tor-ture of religious criticism and persecu-tion and to send to them our thoughtsof brotherly love that we may assist inkeeping alive within their hearts andminds the desire for religious worshipand the determination to find God in

the sanctums of their homes and in theHoly of Holies of their consciousness  regardless of the closing of their cathe-drals or the difficulties they meet intheir attempt to worship in the cathe-drals of the land. And let each one ofus be sure that in our contacts withhuman beings everywhere we hold inabeyance every word or thought thatmight be a criticism of the religion ofothers or of the leaders of religiousthought or of the creeds or dogmaswhich men have found helpful no matterhow they may differ from our own or

how we may view them from our pointof view. Le t us unite in keeping theflame of religious worship burning bril-liantly and intensely throughout the

world for in it alone lies the path to the

comprehension of God and which will

eventually bring all men into the great-

er light of truth. Let there be peace on

The earth is likea school. Eve ryincarnation sees us

going forward to a higher class, or re-maining in the same position in whichwe were before. It would seem that amyriadminded Instructor guides us in

each life. Some follow His guidance,others do not; but no one moves to ahigher grade until he willingly learnsthe lessons and solves all the problemsset before him while on earth.

W ith added knowledge, experience,and memory, with the promptings ofour Inner Self, we can advance andlearn afresh. An obstacle in a past lifemay be overcome in a new one— unlesswe wilfully commit the same old mis-takes.

“If the absorption into the divine inthe afterlife be the creed of some,”Tennyson wrote, “let them at all eventsallow us many existences of individual-

ity before this absorption; since thisshortlived individuality seems to be tooshort a preparation for so mighty aunion.”

In the school of life there are manyclasses to pass through, each class anincarnation, before we reach the highestone of all.

To da y all selfthinking men a n dwomen see that instruction by manmade education, with its hypotheticalreasonings a n d abstract definitions,causes us to reach a cul-de-sac , a limitto our searching, where our mentality

is arrested in its growth; we find our-selves facing a blank wall of indeter-minate knowledge.

“All t h a t arrests the motion ofthought is false,” writes Ouspensky, oneof our foremost modern teachers ofT r u t h , i n h i s Tertium Organum. “Therefore the true and real progressof thought is only in the broadest striv-ing toward knowledge, that does notrecognize the possibility of arrestmentin any  fo und forms of knowledge at all.

The meaning of life is in eternal search. And only in that se arc h can we findsomething truly new.”

Never before in history has civiliza-tion shown so ardent a desire for in-dividual progress and learning — not

academic teachings of mundane origin,but wisdom of spiritual source. Ourgeneration is awake to the fact that wewant to learn and to think for ourselves.W e realize our advancement lies purelywithin us, through study.

Only through study and experience,and further endless study, will man’slife become bright and rare. The vastregions of thought will open beforehim; he will become receptive to Cosmicmessages in light and wisdom; he willbe as a god on earth. T o be given

everything at once would only makehim a slave.

Cosmic wisdom must grow slowlywithin us, by our own culture. Slowgrowth is best. Th e seed that quicklysprings up into leaf withers before theblossom appears. M asters teach uscarefully, gradually— occasionally giv-ing us enough only in proportion to ourpowers of understanding; dropping afew seeds here and there, leaving usalone to foster them. T o have all Cos-mic power bestowed on us at one time

would be to make us helpless! Godwould have our allegiance only throughvoluntary love; by F ree W ill.

"He, the Almighty, might well createall things in their finished state, Heneed not set out seedlings and wait forfruit to come to ripeness. But since manis more ready to strike up ties offriendship with that which has grownin him from small beginnings, than withthat which is presented to him fullygrown, therefore does God in His kind-ness allow the things that are to belong

to man to grow up slowly within manhimself. And as they slowly grow upwith him, man becomes familiar withthat which belongs to him. At the endof life, however, there stands God andwaits for man to bring Him back theseedlings that did not grow to fruitionin his life. And God takes these seed-lings and gives them to another, inwhom they will continue to grow, andthen again to another and still to others,until finally they bear their fruit. Th ese

seedlings are, however, as if new in eachnew man, for they were touched byGod as He took them from one andgave them to another.”

The above  passage is taken from T he  Human Face, by M ax Picard. It shows

how man receives again the seeds ofancient wisdom with each incarnation,to foster them to full growth, if heworks with Cosmic Guidance. (E ph e-sians 2:410)

In the Inner Man we have all passedthrough Heaven. As Travellers throughEternity we are passing through Earthfor the new experiences it affords theeverevolving soul.

“The sublime idea,” Claude Bragdonstates in a lecture, The Language of  Form, “that the personal self of eachone of us is but the transitory mani-festation on the plane of materiality ofan immortal individual whose habitat ison higher planes of being, has its ana-logue in the mathematical conceptionthat all threedimensional figures areprojections on threedimensional spaceof fourdimensional forms."

There is no gradual creation in Eter-nity, such as in Earthly Time, for inEternity ALL exists at once and isknown. Etern ity needs Time to pro-duce in Space the secrets of creation in

material form. In this way the produc-tions of time become steps for man’sadvancement. Our incarnations aid usto progress, so that men "may rise on stepping-stones of their dead selves to higher things."

Those who open their Inner Selvesto Cosmic Wisdom become transmutedfrom ignorance and darkness to knowl-edge and light. They become the artists,musicians, poets and architects of their  time, for everything they do has beautyin it. As master architects they build

into vast temples of beauty the variousphases of life in which t h e y passthrough, for their life is based on DivinePlans. Th e harmony of their every acthas music. The y are poets because theInner Man  gu ides them ; an d the InnerMan is the Poetic Genius.

Many present day artists are woe-fully deficient in the understanding ofTrue Art, as present day musicians,poets and architects are also deficientin the understanding of their particular

spheres of work. W he re there is greatart there is great advancement. Adearth of art breeds stagnation. Andthis is true of the individual’s innerdevelopment, as of manmade schoolsof reasoning. In the past forty yearsthere has been a sad lack of True Art.

Within that space of time there havebeen wars, revolutions and worldly up-heavals.

The New Age into which we aremoving is for the Tru e Artists. W e arereturning to the Art of the mystic phil-osophers, the real teachers of man. Th esculptors of ancient days created instone and marble what the artists paint-ed in allegorical pictures— seeds of Cos -mic Wisdom they had fostered to fruit-ion within themselves, and which theyput into material form for others to per-

ceive who had yet to learn.Legends tell us of wizards who, in

their fearless bravery, were able to turnhideous monsters into stone by utteringcertain magic words. T o advance, theyhad to overcome evil, just as God hadto subdue the dark powers of the uni-verse before His creation of the world.Without facing evil, and overcoming it, could perfect creation have been done? The ancients declared that evil forces,created within them by their own ima-gination, had to have an outlet in ma-

terial form, otherwise those dark forceswould perhaps break out in some otherterrible manner— such as in crime, oreven murder.

The entry of these evil forces intotheir stone likenesses was inverse to theway in which the Spirit of God enteredHis own Image that was formed by Himfor man.

“Animals are nothing but the formsof our virtues and vices, wanderingbefore our eyes, the visible phantoms ofour souls,” said Victor Hugo.

Again, in the s a m e monumentalbook: “To write the poem of the humanconscience, were it only of a singleman, were it only of the most infamousof men, would be to swallow up allepics in a superior and final epic. Theconscience is the chaos of chimeras, oflusts and of temptations, the furnace ofdreams, the cave of the ideas which areour shame; it is the pandemonium ofsophisms, the battlefield of the passions.

At certain hours, penetrate within thelivid face of a human being who re-flects, and look into that obscurity.There, beneath the external silence,there are combats of giants as inHomer, melees of dragons and hydras,and clouds of phantoms as in Milton,

ghostly labyrinths as in Dante. W ha ta gloom enwraps that infinite whicheach man bears within himself, and bywhich he measures in despair the de-sires of his will, and the actions of hislife!”

Each of our lives, with its actions andcreations, should be the results of TrueArt. Y et it is not expected that everyman and woman should drop what theyare doing and take instructions in thehigher arts. A housewife who controlsher home and family with spiritual love

is as supreme an artist as Raphael. Theman who builds up his life and busi-ness on a basis of honesty to his fellow men is a masterArchitect, equal toBramante, or W ren .

“A Poet, a Painter, a Musician, anArchitect; the man or woman who isnot one of these is not a Christian,”says William Blake, in his crypticalstyle. “Jesus and His Apostles andDisciples were all Artists. Th eir workswere destroyed by the Seven Angels ofthe Seven Churches in Asia, Antichrist,

Science. Art is the Tree of Life. Scienceis the Tree of Death.

“The Eternal Body of Man is theImagination; that is God H imself, theDivine Body; we are His Members. Itmanifests itself in His W ork s of A rt;In Eternity all is Vision. Th e PoeticGenius if the True Man, and the Bodyor Outward Form of Man is derivedfrom the Poetic Genius. Likewise theForms of all things are derived fromtheir Genius, which by the Ancientswas called an Angel and Spirit and

W e are returning to the true Religion— the knowledge that all religions areone; that the Divine Image is the TrueMan; that creations inspired by the

Inner Self— be they in the simple, orprofound, spheres of life— are the re-sults of True Art.

The old forms of reasoning, thatsome men are worthy to become gifted,others not, is dissipating into smoke inthe fire of new thought. W e know to-day that in our various great, or simple,states of daily life, we are houseswherein the Poetic Genius resides. W ecan let Him remain for our earthlyduration, or merely ignore His Presence.To those who become aware of HisNearness He will reveal all the secretsof Nature. Our every act, under Hisguidance, will be True Art.

Throughout the centuries, those inpossession of Hidden Secrets have beeninspired by their Godgiven wisdom tohand down their knowledge to theirfellow men. Y et to give out DivineTruths to the masses is not the bestmeans of assisting progress. Onlythose willing to seek are the ones who

 find!

In 1927, Colonel Charles A. Lind-bergh flew from Wash ington to M ex -ico. His flight natura lly held the mindsin both countries, and drew much inter-est toward t h e pyramids of NorthAmerica, particularly those of the Sunand of the Moon, at San Juan Teoti

huacan, which he visited. Like thepyramids of Egypt, these ancient Aztecstructures contain, geometrically andmathematically, the hidden secrets ofman and the macrocosm.

Architects from times most ancienthave endeavored to leave behind intheir works the secrets of the universe,and of man. To da y their mystic mean-ings are being solved and understoodby the world in general, especially bystudents of occult philosophy, particul-arly by Rosicrucians.

No knowledge is too difficult to learnand understand. All too often the mys-teries we long so ardently to solve havetheir solutions facing us in our dailylife, for how true it is that “Wisdom  cries out in the street, and no man re

 gar ds it."

The same spirit that inspired theGothic Age of enlightenment is surgingthrough us again today! Th at is whythe present architecture tends towardthe architecture of ancient times— to the

architecture of Lemuria and Atlantis,when the artists in those highly deve-loped continents based their structureson Divine Plans, portraying geometri-cally in stone and marble the HiddenMysteries of Man and the Universe.

A building of today tapers up intospires, rising from one plane to a higherone, until the highest seems to piercethe heavens; and though its base isplanted on good, solid earth, its formdoes not belong to the world, or haveother than heavenly beauty.

In his valuable treatise on T r u eArchitecture, The Beautiful Necessity, Claude Bragdon says: “Architecturemirrors the life of the individual and ofthe races, which is the life of the in-dividual written large in time a n d

space.”

The following is a comparison be-tween the Style of architecture, theTime of the world’s education after theloss of Atlantis, the State of man’s InnerSelf, and theA^eof his mental develop-ment:

In almost every church we see overthe central door the symbols of Regen-eration and P erfection— the Circle en-cased within the Square, topped by theT riangle.

The more we know of symbolical dia-grams the more we learn of UniversalArt. The Triangle, the Circle and theSquare become magic symbols, the keysby which all occult doors to HiddenMysteries are opened! Th e mystic de-sign drawn by the Imperator for a sym-bol of the Cathedral of the Soul hides,

yet reveals, this great truth.The Circle is the universe; the Tri

angle, the Trin ity; the Square, man’sfourfold, or sevenfold, nature. Th e twotowers, or pillars, the duality in all Na-ture.

In Space we see things together, allat one time. T h at is, a building is there,standing still for our inspection. It issolid Form given to spiritual Imagination. Thus Architecture belongs toSpace. Music is transitory. W e hear

various harmonies, but beyond stirringwithin our mind some hidden memories,while being played, music passes be-yond physical hearing. A t another timewe might listen again; we cannot hear itconstantly, or all at once. Th us musicbelongs to Time. That is why Bragdon— in his rare, but for art lovers, un for-tunately slender, book— refers to arch i-tecture as  fr ozen music. Just as Hugocalled Notre Dame of Paris a  prayer in stone. That it is musical, spiritual, inspiration turned into mass, was pur-posely so intended by its builder,Maurice de Sully, in 1163, when hereared it up on the ruins of the twincathedrals of Ste. Marie a n d St.Etienne.

“In space alone, in space without time,’’ states the author of The Human Face , “the nature of man is incapable ofmaking itself clear. M an requires time.Man is set in space, true enough, butonly in time can this setting in spaceacquire meaning. In time man unfoldshimself in space, and that unfolding inspace through the course of time isman’s career."

M an ’s earliest idea was to form a ma-terial symbol of the Spirit working in

 M atter .

The Druids in ancient Britain con-ducted sacred rites amid great megalithic circles. Th ese rites were eventuallyprofaned, and human sacrifices made,which brought about the downfall ofDruidic ceremonies. Amid these ancientstones worship and adoration were per-formed at the rising and at the settingof the sun, for the lifegiving light andheat coming from it. The Spirit comingthrough Form.

The two upright stone pillars stoodto early man’s mind as the duality inNatu re. W ith the lintel resting on topof them, the third form springing from

that duality. Th ese ancient symbols donot stand for Sex, as so many presentpeople fondly believe. Sex is not repre-sented in architecture at all— though thePositive and Negative forces of Natureare often misconstrued for such.

These two forces are frequently seenin stone decorations— such as the Eggand the Tongue; the Ve rtical and theHorizontal; the pointed blade and therounded petal. Thus, the Tower of  

Winds, at Athens, has erect pointedpalm leaves above a single row ofcurved acanthus leaves.

Rosicrucian students in the f i r s tgrades should find particular interest inarchitectural decorations throughout the

ages, for they reveal an abundance ofsymbols.

“W he n we come to consider archi-tecture through the world and down theages, we find it bisected by a like in-evitable duality: either it is organic, fol-lowing the law of natural organisms: orit is arranged, according to some Eucli-dian ideal devised by proudspiritedmen. In other words, it is either culti-vated, like the flower; or it is cut, likethe gem.’’ (Bragdon— Organic Architecture.)

The twelfth century, the dawn ofGothic Architecture, was an age of in-tellectual awakening; of economic, poli-tical and social changes; of human ad-vancement. Y et despite the many ad-vantages the Gothic Age held for man,Pride perverted Divine Truth . To ren-der up our Pride, accepting Humility inits place, is the hardest thing to ask anyhuman being. Th e Ma ster Jesus Him-self had to face this test. (M atthe w4:57.)

Our greatest minds of learning oftenstop in their travel to the heights to

look back, and down at the rest ofhumanity. A grea t mind feels godlikein his solitary heights and despises therest of us on earth below. And rightthere is where Intellect falls if it doesnot possess Compassion!

From the ground, a Gothic structurespires to the heavens. It causes the on-looker to aspire to the heights. On thetop of a Gothic cathedral, looking downto earth, the gazer sees no longer spir-ing pinnacles. Rushing out from him atevery side are vast winglike arms.

People below look the size of insects.He feels a god, as Lucifer felt when hegazed down at poor mankind far below.

I am not sure whether this terrible,frightening effect was purposely doneby builders of the Gothic Ag e. Y et theGrea t Lesson is ever there— that mancan attain the heights, but he alwayshas the Free W ill to turn Love intoPower ; Kindness into Cruelty. At his passing,Raphael superintended the work, butdisputes arose, many wanting a LatinCross for a plan. At his death, thegreat Michelangelo undertook the laborand insisted on returning to Bramante’soriginal ground plan; and from this thepresent structure rose. It is, naturally,

organic.St. Paul’s Cathedral, in London, is

built on the site of the Temple of Diana.The first structure was said to havebeen erected by Ethelbert, King ofKent, in 610 . It was burnt in W illiamthe Conqu eror’s time. T he next edificewas a Gothic church, taking two hun-dred years to build, and called Old St.Paul’s. This was destroyed in the GreatFire of London, in 1666.

The present structure was begun bySir Christopher W ren , in 1675, and

completed thirtyfive years later. SirChristopher, besides being a student ofoccult philosophy, was also a scientificman, an inventor  of various astronomi-cal instruments. When he started to de-sign St. Paul’s he hoped to put into itthe great knowledge he possessed.

“I build for Eter nity!” W re n de-clared. He took two years to build thefoundations alone, and many friends

 joked about his intention of keeping hisword! But W re n, like all other great

builders, was working out his plans onEtern al Laws. Natura lly he knew thatin time even St. Paul’s will have van-ished into dust; but the Divine Plansof his work will be passed on, as theywere passed on to him from ancient

architects!It is customary always to place in a

new edifice a portion of an old one.W hen a centre for the dome was plan-ned, W re n sent a workman to get astone from the debris of the old church.The workman returned with a piece ofa gravestone, on which was writtenRE SU RG A M ! W ren regarded this asvery symbolical, and a good omen.

The Sunday evening services are heldunder the blue depths of the cathedral'smajestic dome. Th is was what W ren de-

sired in his time. He sought to havepeople contact divine power in thecentre of his church, as man may con-tact divine power in the centre of his own being!

A musician describing St. Paul’s intomusic would open his composition indeep, majestic chords to foreshadowthe hidden beauty the structure standsfor. Th e centra l theme would be in6/8 time, to accent the first and fourthbeats, so that the fourfold nature ofman will be heard rising to its fourth

dimensional plane.The architect of the Taj Mahal wasanother mystical designer. His structurecontains in geometrical form the Circle and the Cube, man’s eternal life.

The church of St. Sophia, at Con-stantinople, is another of the world’smystical puzzles. T o begin with, itsname is incorrect, since it was notnamed after any saint, but dedicatedoriginally to Hagia Sophia — HigherW isdom — as the forty windows at thespring of its dome would indicate!

The Byzantine form of architecture— which is coming again to the fore—makes much use of the  pen dent ive, thetriangular, spherical surface. In thismystical plan, on which higher struc-tures can rise, we see the angular cor-ners of the Cube rounded and madesmooth. Th is is symbolical of Squaring  the Circle; of Circling the Square! Herein we  get in geom etrica l form the proof of man’s Fourfold nature and LifeEternal!

Occasionally such writingswill be presented through the translation or interpretations of other eminent authors orthinkers of the past. This month we bring to you the eminent cosmologist and astronomerLaplace.

Pie rre Simon Lap lace was born in Normand y, March 28, 1749. Even as a youth ofeighteen years did he show signs of brilliance. At that young age he became teacher ofmathem atics at Beaumont. From 1770, for a number of years, he was extremely busy withLagrange in establishing the permanency of the solar system, accounting for its perturba-tions and interactions, and attempting to prove that they were periodic and not ad-ventitious.

His work entitled "Mechanics of the Heavens” was a gigantic exposition of the move-ments of the solar system, but the work which made him famous and for which allastronomers pay him a debt of honor is his “Sys tem of the Wo rld.” In this work he ad-vances his famous nebular hypothesis, in which he accounts for the origin of the universe.It attracted considerable attention at the time because of its logical explanation of cos-mological mysteries, and because it was he most sound cosmological theory up to the time.His previous work had consisted of tracing the law of gravitation throughout the systemof planets.

Laplace also tried being a politician, but he failed miserably. Po litically he changedas often as the wind. During Napoleon’s regime his views made him a count. On the otherhand during the regime of the restored Bo urbon king in 1817 he was made a marquis. Hedied March 5, 1827.

Below we bring you an excerpt from his famous nebular hypothesis. It is worthy ofcareful reading and study. If this ex cerpt is sufficient to whet your appetite for his com-plete works, they may be had at most any large free public library.

N T H E primitivestate in which wehave supposed theSun to be, it re-sembles those sub-stances which aretermed nebulae,

which, when seent h r o u g h tele-scopes, appear tobe composed of anucleus, more orless brilliant, surr o u n d e d by a

nebulosity, which, by condensing on itssurface , transforms it into a star. If allthe stars are conceived to be similarlyformed, we can suppose their anterior

state of nebulosity to be preceded byother states, in which the nebulousmatter was more or less diffuse, thenucleus being at the same time more orless brilliant. By going back in thismanner, we shall arrive at a state ofnebulosity so diffuse, that its existence

can with difficulty be conceived.For a considerable time back, theparticular arrangement of some starsvisible to the naked eye, has engagedthe attention of philosophers. Mitche lremarked long since how extremely im-probable it was that the stars compos-ing the constellation called the Pleiades,for example, should be confined withinthe narrow space which contains them,by the sole chance of hazard; from

which he inferred that this group ofstars, and the similar groups which theheavens present to us, are the effectsof a primitive law of nature. Th esegroups are a general result of the condensation of nebulae of several nuclei;

for it is evident that the nebulous matterbeing perpetually attracted by these dif-ferent nuclei, ought at length to form agroup of stars, like to that of thePleiades. The condensation of nebulaeconsisting of two nuclei, will in likemanner form stars very near to eachother, revolving the one about the otherlike to the double stars, whose respec-tive motions have been already recog-nized.

But in what manner has the solar at-mosphere determined the motions of

rotation and revolution of the planetsand satellites? If these bodies had pene-trated deeply into this atmosphere, itsresistance would cause them to fall onthe Sun. W e may therefore supposethat the planets were formed at its suc-cessive limits, by the condensation ofzones of vapours, which it must, whileit was cooling, have abandoned in theplane of its equator.

Let us resume the results which wehave given in the tenth chapter of thepreceding book. T he Sun ’s atmosphere

cannot extend indefinitely; its limit isthe point where the centrifugal forcearising from the motion of rotation bal-ances the gravity; but according as thecooling contracts the atmosphere, andcondenses the molecules which are nearto it, on the surface of the star, the mo-tion of rotation increases; for, in virtueof the principle of areas, the sum of theareas described by the radius vector  ofeach particle of the Sun and its atmos-phere, and projected on the plane of itsequator, is always the same. Co nse-quently the rotation ought to be quicker,

when these particles approach to thecentre of the Sun. The centrifuga l forcearising from this motion becoming thusgreater; the  po int where the gravity isequal to it, is nearer to the centre of theSun. Supposing, therefore, what is na-tural to admit, that the atmosphere ex-tended at any epoch as far as thislimit, it ought, according as it cooled, toabandon the molecules, which are situ-ated at this limit, and at the successive

limits produced by the increased rota-tion of the Sun. Th ese particles, afterbeing abandoned, have continued to cir-culate about this star, because their cen-trifugal force was balanced by theirgravity. But as this equality does not

obtain for these molecules of the atmos-phere which are situated on the parallelsto the Sun’s equator, these have comenearer by their gravity to the atmos-phere according as it condensed, andthey have not ceased to belong to it in-asmuch as by their motion, they haveapproached to the plane of this equator.

Let us now consider the zones ofvapours, which have been successivelyabandoned. Th ese zones ought, accord-ing to all probability, to form by theircondensation, and by the mutual at-

traction of their particles, several concentrical rings of vapours circulatingabout the Sun. The mutual friction ofthe molecules of each ring ought to ac-celerate some and retard others, untilthey all had acquired the same angularmotion. Consequently the real velocitiesof the molecules which are farther fromthe Sun, ought to be greatest. Th e fol-lowing cause ought likewise to con-tribute to this difference of velocities:The most distant particles of the Sun,and which, by the effects of cooling andcondensation, have collected so as to

constitute the superior part of the ring,have always described areas propor-tional to the times, because the centralforce by which they are actuated hasbeen constantly directed to this star;but this constancy of areas requires anincrease of velocity, according as theyapproach more to each other. It appearsthat the same cause ought to diminishthe velocity of the particles, which, situ-ated near the ring, constitute its inferior

 part.

If all the particles of a ring of vapours

continued to condense without separat-ing, they would at length constitute a

solid or a liquid ring. But the regular-

ity which this formation requires in all

the parts of the ring, and in their cool-

ing, ought to make this phenomenon

very rare. Th us the solar system pre-

sents but one example of it; that of the

rings of Satur n. Almost always each

ring of vapours ought to be divided into

several masses, which, being movedwith velocities which differ little fromeach other, should continue to revolveat the same distance about the Sun.These masses should assume a spheroid-ical form, with a rotatory motion in thedirection of that of their revolution, be-cause their inferior particles have a lessreal velocity than the superior; theyhave therefore constituted so m a n yplanets in a state of vapour. But if oneof them was sufficiently powerful, tounite successively by its attraction, allthe others about its centre, the ring ofvapours would be changed into one solespheroidical mass, circulating about theSun, with a motion of rotation in thesame direction with that of revolution.This last case has been the most com-mon; however, the solar system pre-

sents to us the first case, in the foursmall planets which revolve betweenMars and Jupiter, at least unless wesuppose with Olbers, that they original-ly formed one planet only, which wasdivided by an explosion into severalparts, and actuated by different veloci-ties. Now if we trace the changes whicha further cooling ought to produce inthe planets formed of vapours, and ofwhich we have suggested the formation,we shall see to arise in the centre ofeach of them, a nucleus increasing con-tinually, by the condensation of the

atmosphere which environs it. In thisstate, the planet resembles the Sun inthe nebulous state, in which we havefirst supposed it to be; the coolingshould therefore produce at the differ-ent limits of its atmosphere, pheno-mena similar to those which have beendescribed, namely, rings and satellitescirculating about its centre in the direc-tion of its motion of rotation, and re-volving in the same direction on theiraxes. Th e regular distribution of themass of rings of Saturn about its centre

and in the plane of its equator, resultsnaturally from this hypothesis, and,without it, is inexplicable. Th ose ringsappear to me to be existing proofs of

the primitive extension of the atmos-phere of Saturn, and of its successivecondensations. Thu s, the singular pheno-mena of the small eccentricities of theorbits of the planets and satellites, ofthe small inclination of these orbits tothe solar equator, and of the identity inthe direction of the motions of rotationand revolution of all those bodies withthat of the rotation of the Sun, followthe hypothesis which has been sug-gested, and render it extremely prob-able. If the solar system was formedwith perfect regularity, the orbits of thebodies which compose it would becircles, of which the planes, as well asthose of the various equators and rings,would coincide with the plane of thesolar equator. But we may supposethat the innumerable varieties which

must necessarily exist in the tempera-ture and density of different parts ofthese great masses, ought to producethe eccentricities of their orbits, and thedeviations of their motions, from theplane of this equator.

In the preceding hypothesis, th ecomets do not belong to the solar sys-tem. If they be considered, as we havedone, as small nebulae, wandering fromone solar system to another, and formedby the condensation of the nebulousmatter, which is diffused so profuselythroughout the universe, we may con-

ceive that when they arrive in that partof space where the attraction of theSun predominates, it should force themto describe elliptic or hyperbolic orbits.But as their velocities are equally pos-sible in every direction, they must moveindifferently in all directions, and atevery possible inclination to the elliptic;which is conformable to observation.Thus the condensation of the nebulousmatter, which explains the motions ofrotation and revolution of the planetsand satellites in the same direction, and

in orbits very little inclined to eachother, likewise explains why the mo-tions of the comets deviate from thisgeneral law.

V E R Y few years itseems advisablefor us to makesome more or lesspublic explanationof the Rosicrucian

a t t i t u d e t o w a r dcertain religiousmatters and espec-ially o u r under-standing and in-t e r p r e t a t i o n o fvarious religiousterms. Our mem

ers who advance through the degreesand reach the higher ones are never leftin doubt as to our attitude in these mat-ters, but many of our younger membersor those in the lower degrees and a

great many of our readers and friendsare deprived of any correct understand-ing of our attitude by being deprived ofthe fuller explanations that are gradu-ally revealed through the graded in-structions and monographs.

Some years ago the term Cosmic wasmore or less unknown to the mass ofpeople and was restricted almost ex-clusively to the terminology of mysticsand metaphysicians. T o these personsit had a very definite meaning and wasconfusing to only a few. To d ay the

term Cosmic is more or less popular andis not a surprisingly new word to thosewho are just entering the paths ofmystical instruction. T he popularity ofthe word Cosmic is based upon itsvaried applications and uses in the va-

rious fields of philosophical and scien-tific thought. W e have to thank theeminent scientist, Harlan T. Stetson, re-search associate in geophysics at Har-vard University, for the introductioninto popular scientific lore of the termcosmecology, which he defines as aterm which would include the studies ofthe earth in its relationship to the Cos-mic scheme in which our planet isplaced. Bu t the popular use of the wordCosmic in connection with various raysof energy or power from the heavensand in connection with other astrono-mical and cosmological laws and prin-ciples has tended to confuse the popularmind in regard to the precise meaningwhich the mystic may attribute to theword Cosmic.

Many of our friends who are diligentreaders of this magazine and other ofour public writings, books, and pamph-lets are often confused, also, by our useof the term Cosmic, inasmuch as it maybe applied in many ways without creat-ing a concrete definition in the minds of

the readers. V ery often the term Cos-mic is associated with God or DivineProvidence as an equation of the con-sciousness or mind of God or the willof God. Th is, of course, becomes con-fusing to those who are devout in their

religions and who have accepted or whohave become confirmed in their under-standing of the nature and conscious-ness of God.

In attempting to explain these mootedterms, may we say as a preamble that allRosicrucians agree upon this one fund-amental, which is a basic law or conceptfor the understanding of any or all ofthe Rosicrucian teachings: Th at thereis but one everliving God, the Creatorof all created things, the Father of allhuman beings, loving, merciful, and just,

omnipotent and omnipresent. The Rosi-crucians have no other god but this Godwhich is the God of the Christians, theGod of the Jews, and the God of manyother religious groups of people. Se c-ondly, all Rosicrucians are agreed thatthe soul in man and in each and everysegment of human life on earth is a partof the consciousness of God and that inthis fact lies the manifestation or theessence of the Fatherhood of God andthe brotherhood of man.

The two foregoing basic principles

most certainly preclude the conceptionon the part of Rosicrucians of a second-ary god of any nature, any quality, anykind, or any place, or of any intelligentpower, any conscious energy, or anygroup intellect or providence coequalwith God or having any of the preroga-tives attributed to God. For this reason,whatever we may think of the Cosmicor say about it and look to it for inspir-ation and guidance or revelation, or nomatter how we may appeal through itas an intermediary in expressing theprayers on our lips or the thoughts in

our hearts, the Cosmic does not for onemoment supplant in our minds the om-nipotence and the exclusive prerogativesand powers of God.

Recently in these pages one of ourdepartmental officers attempted to ex-plain some of the problems surroundingour understanding of the Cosmic and hemade a statement to which some of ourmembers and readers have taken excep-tion because of their hurried reading

and misunderstanding of the significantidea that was contained in his somewhatveiled expression. In referring to thetendency on the part of a great manyindividuals to throw all responsibility ofour welfare and our future upon the

Cosmic and to expect the Cosmic toguide and direct them as though it werean intelligent power invested with divineauthority to intercede in the lives of in-dividuals, Frater Miles in his article inthe January issue of The Rosicrucian  Digest, attempted to explain the factthat neither God nor the intelligent lawsoperating in the Cosmic world were con-cerned in the immediate and detailed af-fairs of our daily lives. He used the fol-lowing expression, which was misunder-stood by some of our readers: “W emust learn through individual and per-sonal contact with this force that God,or the Deity, has no personal interest inus as human beings. That which we callGod manifests as a divine, ineffable lawand that law is serviceable to our mindsonly when we comprehend it."

The phrase that seemed to astonishand surprise some of our readers wasthat which stated that “God has no per-sonal interest in us as human beings."Proof that this statement was misunder-stood lies in the fact that most of thosewho have quoted it in their enthusiasticarguments about the possible error ofunderstanding on the part of FraterMiles, quoted the words as “God hasno personal interest in us." It is highlysignificant that of the twentyfive orthirty letters that have come to myhands from various parts of this countryand Europe in regard to this matter, allbut two of the writers failed to add tothe sentence t h e qualifying clause“. . . as human beings .” It is quite evi-dent that those writers thought that thispoint was of little significance and yet

the entire contention on the part ofFrater Miles has its essence and itsheart in that qualifying phrase.

I stated above that the soul in man isa segment of the divine consciousnessand omnipotence of God. Eac h livingbeing on earth, as the Rosicrucianteachings state in the fundamentals oftheir ontology, is a living soul, not amere human being. The fact that thesoul is incarnated in a body of flesh or

is resident within a human form haslittle more bearing upon the fact thatman is a living soul than has the outerclothing which he wears over his physi-cal body. Certa inly we would notdescribe God’s children here on earth

as “dressed bod ies.’’ It is inconceivableto the mystic that God is concerned inany way with the human, physical partof our earthly existence. A part ofGod’s soul and consciousness was notbreathed into the clay body of man inthe beginning of time or now in thepresent time for the purpose of ag-grandizing a lifeless physical form andmaking it a majestic image. If we ac -cept the idea that God created man inthe image of Himself, it can only meanthat we are spiritual images of our

spiritual Fath er. Any other interpreta-tion of this idea would be not only in-congruous but wholly unsatisfactory toour spiritual natures. Th e purpose ofthe soul consciousness of God in its in-carnations on earth is to give these seg-ments of divinity certain experiencesand the benefits of certain lessons whichexperiences and lessons it will gainthrough the trials and tribulations ofthe physical body, the physical man, theearthly composition of ourselves alongwith our purely mundane natures and

sensations.Since the divine purpose of the exist-

ence of souls on earth is to permit themto carry out and function in the mannerdecreed by God and to bring His earth-ly spiritual image into contact with suchexperiences as will aid in evolving thesoul personality of each individual, itmust be apparent that the purely phy-sical part of man, or in other words, hisbody, is of little concern in this greatscheme. Th is must become even moreapparent when you stop to consider the

fact that the physical body is constantlyin the making. It is forever goingthrough a process of change. Th ere isnothing immortal or permanent aboutman’s physical body. Not only is it truethat the man or woman of adulthood nolonger has the same physical cells and

elements of the body possessed when a

child, but every few weeks the various

cells and parts of the body are renewed.

W e could not expect God to have any

personal or sublime interest in this

changing, inconstant part of ourselvesknown as the physical body. Af tertransition this physical body will breakdown into the primary elements andlose its form, its nature, its worldlycharacter, and will have no heritage to

carry on into the future. Th e soul with-in, however, will remain the same andhas been the same for aeons of time. Itis immortal and unchangeable exceptthat it evolves in personality and in-dividual expression or character . Aftertransition it will still function as a per-sonality, an individuality despite thefact that it has thrown off a temporaryrobe in which it had little or no interest.W e can understand, therefore, thatGod's interest in us is an interest in theevolving self within and not in the

human part or human constitution.As for the trials and experiences of

life and any divine intervention, it mustbe reasonable for all students of mysti-cism to understand that God could un-questionably intervene in our human af-fairs if two principles were true: First,that God had an interest in us as humanbeings and in our human affairs, ex-periences, and sensations; and secondly,if the purpose of the soul within us andour spiritual existence here on earthwere not for the purpose of benefiting

by the experiences, lessons, trials andtribulations of life. If Go d’s interven-tion and interest in us was constant andin any way related to the human side ofour existence, we would all lead ideallives not only in a spiritual sense but ina mental and physical sense. W e wouldnever commit any errors of any kindand, therefore, never suffer any sorrowsor pains, spiritually, mentally, or physi-cally. W e would never become diseasedand we would never strive to overcometemptations in life for there would be no

temptations that c o u l d successfullytempt us. W e would never seek to at-tain anything higher for there could benothing higher than such an ideal lifeunder God's intervention and directionand we would find that the divine inter-vention was defeating the purpose forwhich the soul was incarnated on earth.

This brings us at once to the questionof prayer. It might appear from a casualreading of Frater Miles’ argument inhis article that he had little or no faith

grant us the petitions we utter as humanbeings and will not intervene in ourpurely human experiences but is mind-ful constantly of the spiritual evolutiontaking place within us and does guideand direct our affairs so that this evo-

lution may be maintained and increasedin its value and ultimate contribution toour spiritual unfoldment and progress.

But looking at the statements madeby Frater Miles and other writers inthis regard, we come to understand

better what Jesus meant in many of Hisstatements and what He intended toconvey in many of His parables andallegories but which we in modern timeshave set aside in the false belief that wemay substitute our judgment in place of

N this amazinglystupendous uni-verse of ours ,worlds a r e born,l ive and growthrough vast per-iods of time dur-ing which theyfulfill the divinepurpose, in theeconomy of crea-tion, for whichthey are intended,and die. It is the

law governing all created things— thisprocess of evolving from the PrimalEssence, becoming perfected in formand material composition and devolvingthrough all the stages of disintegration,finally becoming again identified withthat from which they were created. Allmaterial things, although composed of a

substance which is itself eternal, have apoint at which they begin to manifest indefinite form and another point atwhich form cease s. It does not follow,however, that when form ceases toexist anything has been destroyed orremoved, but rather that form has beendissolved and the essence of form hasbeen reassimilated in the Primal BinaryEssence which is omnipresent in all theUniverse.

In the vast scheme of the Universethere are untold numbers of nebulae(island universes) whirling throughspace at terrific rates of speed, separ-ated by billions of miles of seeminglyunoccupied void, creating from out oftheir being millions of suns, stars,worlds and worldlets. So unimaginablyhuge is the entire whole that the mindof man refuses to conceive its im-mensity. The beginning is shrouded inmystery and the end is unthinkable.However, they to whom it is given tothink profoundly may derive great in-spiration, and awareness of the enorm-ity of material creation, by borrowingthe calculations and interpretations ofscience relative to the size and extent ofthe universe. T o this end let us lookfor a moment into the findings ofAstronomy and Cosmogony.

It is maintained, by foremost author-

ity in these sciences, that the radius ofthe observable part of the universe is adistance equal to three hundred millionsof light years. Th us the diameter ofthat part of the whole which is withinthe province of man to explore is on theorder of six hundred millions of lightyears. W he n it is remembered thatlight travels through space at the amaz-ing pace of one hundred and eightysix

thousand miles a second and that in oneyear it will cover six trillions of miles,the awful distance represented by sixhundred millions of light years con-founds the senses. Th ey refuse to com-prehend such infinity of extension, and

this is not enough. It is further claimedthat the entire universe is about six bil-lions of light years in diameter. Th isdistance stated in linear measure isthirtysix sextillions of miles. Suchenormity transcends the scope of themost profound imagination.

Now let us try to comprehend whatman sees when with the aid of his greattelescopes he peers out across space toa distance of three sextillion miles.First, we must remember that light pro-ceeding from objects viewed throughsuch enormous distances began its jour-ney towards the earth some three hun-dred millions of years ago. W h at t er-rible catastrophes and far reachingchanges may have occurred during suchages can be but a matter of conjecture.Even before the appearance of animallife on mother earth and long before theadvent of man as a contending factor inthe affairs of the world, light rays thatare at this very moment being photo-graphed by our astronomers were ontheir endless way across the long reach-es of space. It will thus be seen that

light just now emanating from these fardistant suns, stars, and moons, will notregister on the mirror's of man’s tele-scopes until after some three hundredmillions of years have come and gone.One can only vaguely guess at whatmay transpire in this universe of uni-verses in the course of so many ages.

W h at man sees is not what in realityexists at this time, but what did exist,or transpired, long ages ago. W e looknot upon reality but upon the ghosts ofwhat was once reality in the Cosmos.Things just now occurring in these fardistant places may never be viewed byhuman beings— at least not by men suchas now inhabit the earth. Fo r, who cantell what might be wrought in the livesof animals and of men during the mil-lions of years which must necessarily  transpire before these changes are mani-fested in our sphere. It could even bethat the sustaining substance of life, orthe atmosphere of earth, might havebeen withdrawn and life as we know itmay have departed, perhaps by meta

morphic process, to other, newer, andmore favorable realms in the SolarSystem. Th e Solar System itself mighthave undergone such vast changes asare not now even dreamed of. All thingsare forever "becoming .” Th e Etern al

Law of Change is the order of the uni-verse.

Spiral Nebulae

All the material manifestations in thefirmament, such as the stars, suns,planets, etc., are disposed throughoutthe universe in colonies. These colonies,or groups, assume the form of hugerotating spiral masses. On photographicplates these enormous clouds of rotatingmatter present the appearance of hugepyrotecnic pin wheels spinning about aluminous center with vast luminousclouds extending far out into space inthe form of spirals. Th e centers aremore or less dense and seem to attractthe less dense clouds or gaseous matterforming the outer reaches of the spiral.W ithin these spirals may be seenthousands and even millions of starsand suns in the process of formationand following in the trail of the reced-ing, attrac ting center. Now to form anidea of what it is like within the sphereof one of these great spiral nebulae let

us consider our own galactic system.The sun and all the stars visible to thenaked eye are situated in a plane whichis bounded on its periphery by themilky way and together constitute thegreat Galaxy, such as those describedabove, to which our Solar System be-longs. Outsid e of this system, our ownparticular universe, lie the “ExtraGalactic Systems” or island universes.These ’’Extra Galactic Nebulae," to-gether with our own, occupy the vastvaults of seemingly endless space whichit is the province of Astronomy to ex-plore and photograph, and of Cos-mogony to vivify and interpret.

It is estimated that there are onehundred million nebulae or galacticsystems, located within the observablepart of the universe, and that the entireuniverse is the home of some five hun-dred trillions more. Some idea of theenormous masses involved may be hadwhen we find that for each and everyone of these trillions of systems anaverage mass eight hundred million

times greater than that of our sun isclaimed. Now, the equatorial diameterof the sun is approximately eight hun-dred and sixtysix thousand miles andits mass is more than three hundred andthirty thousand times greater than themass of the earth.

The Solar System, consisting of thesun and its retinue of planets and satel-lites, forms a unit that occupies a nichein space more than five and a half bil-lions of miles in diameter, yet this seem-ingly huge entity is but a modest part ofthe great galax y to which it belongs. Infact, this enormous mass is but a singlecell of the whole nebulae— a mere atom— in the universe with its central sun asthe positive nucleus and the planets asthe negative particles rotating about itscenter. The solar system is to thegalaxy as the galaxy is to the greateruniverse.

Early Interpretations

In the early days of man’s tenancy onearth, and before he became aware ofEvolution and the Great Law ofChange, the entire universe was gener-ally attributed to a single creative act.Among some of the more primitiveraces, animals, birds, or reptiles, wereoften apotheosized and credited withthe act, or acts, resulting in the creation

of the world and the universe. The godsof other races were anthropomorphic inprinciple, and were responsible for thecreation of the heavens and the earthsolely for the benefit of man. The pro-cess of creation was the simple one ofassembling raw materials and fashion-ing them into present forms. Little orno thought was given to the origin ofthese raw materials, and evolution orchange had no part in the interpreta-tions placed upon material creation.

About six hundred years B. C. thephilosopher, Thales of Miletus, chal-

lenged these mythological conceptionsregarding the origin of the universe;and, in the fourth centu ry B. C. ourgreat m a s t e r Empedocles, inspiredwith Cosmic Consciousness, taught thatall material creation was the result ofcombinations of the four primary cate-gorical Principles, fire, earth, air andwater. Later, Plato, the greatest of thepupils of Socrates, concluded, andtaught, that all the manifested forms of

creation result from the coming togetherof unlike forces in nature— the unitingof opposites. In the light of our mysticalunderstanding of the great laws ofChanges and Polarity it is easy for usto perceive the great significance of theteachings of these early philosophers

and mystics, and to appreciate the im-portant influence their conclusions havehad upon our present day mystics andscientists in their pursuit of the solutionof the mysteries of creation . It is due totheir tireless investigations that we arein possession of the precious knowledgepertaining to the Primal Binary Forceout of whose negative qualities proceedall material manifestations, and in whosepositive nature is contained all theforces of life.

 M ore M od ern Pos tu lation s

Since the days of the Grecian philo-sophers many theories have been ad-vanced purporting to explain the originand formation of the vast nebulae of theuniverse and their constituent suns,stars and worlds. Among the moreprominent of these philosophers andscientists, who in recent times have benttheir talents and efforts to the solutionof the mysteries of universal creation,we find the names of Sir Isaac Newton,Immanuel Kant, and Pierre Simon DeLaplace. In the last decade of theeighteenth century Laplace propoundedwhat is known as the “Nebulae Hy-pothesis” accounting for the formation,development, and presence of thesemanifestations in the universe. Histheory, briefly summarized, contendsthat a body on beginning to give upheat starts to rotate about its own axis;and, that a heated body, such as agaseous or liquid sphere, will shrink insize as it continues to cool thus causingthe speed of rotation to increase propor-

tionately. Assuming the original body tohave been spherical in form, and tohave been composed of a flexible ma-terial such as liquid or gas, it is clearthat after rotation began it could nothave retained that form. Upo n begin-ning to spin the spheroid would becomeflattened at the poles and somewhatdistended about the equatorial regions.This form is assumed by all slowlyrotating bodies, and is comparable to

the shape of our earth, which has alarger diameter at the point of its girththan through the polar axis. Now asthe frequency of rotation of our coolingand shrinking mass continues to in-crease a point will ultimately be reachedwhere the form becomes flattened, fromits poles downward, until the shape be-comes that of a double convex lens.

Any further increase in the speed ofrotation of our greatly distorted spher-oid would result in matter being separ-ated from the narrowing edges of theequatorial regions and thrown clear ofthe original mass by the centrifugalforce thus generated. Should this pro-cess of increasing speed continue itwould result in just sufficient matter be-ing dislodged and separated from the

main mass to permit it to accommodateitself to the faster rotation and retainits lenticular form. All these masses asthey are separated from the originalmass, become individual spinning en-tities and as the cooling process is moreor less accentuated according to the sizeof the mass, assume periodicities ofrotation peculiar to themselves. Th esenew entities appear on astrophotographic plates as suns, stars, planetsand asteroids inhabiting the great lumi-nous spirals and forming the celestialretinue of the great nebulae to whichthey belong. Th ese new suns, in theirturn, divide and multiply thus givingbirth to whole families of worlds andworldlets such as those of our ownsolar system. In this manner Lap lacehas populated the entire universe withall its galactii, nebulae, suns, stars, andother manifestations of material.

Sir Isaac Newton conjectured, that,in the beginning, all the Primal Essenceof which matter is composed was dis-tributed equally and evenly throughoutthe entire universe— all space; and, that

the celestial manifestations are the resultof condensation having begun, in spots,causing the surrounding medium tostart receding towards the vacuous cen-ter, thus finally collecting the greaterpart of all the primal essence into thevarious galactic masses. Th is recessionof the primal medium towards certaincenters or points of accentuated con-densation constitutes the force knownas gravity. According to the Laplaciantheory the shrinking process, or gravity,was the cause of the various masses be-

ginning to spin about their axes. In thisrespect the Newtonian theory goes moredeeply into the process of creation, giv-ing us a picture of the action of thePrimal Essence in the beginning and ofthe way and manner in which it has as-sumed the countless forms now mani-fested in the universe.

Comparisons

It has been said that, “As above sobelow ." And, in order that we mayunderstand more fully these major en-tities of the universe, let us resort to acomparison of the forms in the realmsof the Macrocosm to those belonging tothe Microcosm. W e are taught that thecells of organic matter are generated

from protoplasm, live therein and havetheir being within this surroundingmedium. Protoplasm then is but anothername for the Primal Essence as it mani-fests on the negative plane, and fromwhich plane or polarity all material formoriginates. T h e cell consists of twoparts, called the nucleus and the cyto-plasm. The nucleus, or center of thecell, has a positive polarity and is en-tirely surrounded by the negativelypolarized cytoplasm. Under the micro-scope the mass appears as a rapidlyvibrating vesicle with a large number ofvery fine threads, fibrils, known aschromosomes, apparently radiating fromthe surrounding medium towards thecenter, while at one side of the nucleusis located a small structure (centrosome) which science calls the “Attrac-tion sphere." By virtue of its vibratorynature this minute vibrating entity at-tracts to itself electrons from the sur-rounding medium out of which it isformed, thus growing in size or weightuntil the point of maximum cohesion hasbeen reached. A t this stage of growth

the socalled “attraction sphere" dividesitself and the divisions being of likepolarities assume positions on oppositesides of the nucleus. Th ese two likeforces repel each other violently and inso doing literally pull the positive nuc-leus asunder and in this manner ac-complish what is known as the “fision"of cells— a com plete division o f bothpolarities accomplishing two entities outof the one original. Th e beginning of acell, then, is the attractive propensity ofa positive principle for its negative or

opposite affinity in nature. W he the rthe cell manifests on the material or theimmaterial plane depends solely on thepredominating polarity. Cells generatedout of protoplasm are preponderantlynegative and therefore manifest only on

the material plane.The multiplication of cells, or growthof material formations, proceeds in ac-cordance with the law of numbers. Amass vibrating with a definite frequencyof number will have an inherent at-tractive power which will obtain as longas the vibrations continue; but, with alimited capacity to retain that which isattracted. W he n the capacity of thecohesion set up by the vibrations hasbeen exceeded a division of the materialmass must necessarily follow. In the fission of cells on the material plane 

the negative quality being in the as-cendency, division first occurs in thecytoplasm. The division of the centresome brings about the division of theless powerful nucleus. Th e frequenciesof vibration account for the differentia-tion of cells into distinctive classes andthe harmonies pertaining to these num-bers are responsible for their segrega-tion into the particular groups of mater-ial by which they manifest to the sensesof man.

The law of numbers as propoundedby our ancient master PY TH A G O R A Sis responsible for the wonderful processof mitosis by which the right quality aswell as the exact quantity of protoplasmis concentrated about a positive nucleusto permit of proper differentiation o fcells in the formation of matter. Know -ing the laws governing the process ofcellular growth and multiplication, it isnot a difficult stretch of the imagina-tion to visualize the growth of the greatmacrocosmic masses and their divisionand subdivision by the same laws andprocesses.

Consider a mass such as that of oursun as being a positive point, or thenucleus of a macrocosmic cell, vibrat-ing with a definite frequency and hav-

ing an attractive power, in accordancewith its number, over all the negativelypolarized primal essence falling withinits particular harmony, in the scale ofCosmic vibrations. It would follow thatupon a sufficient quantity of the essence

of matter being captured and held with-in the sun’s sphere of attraction any ad-ditional negative matter would disturbthe balance of polarity within and afission of the Solar System would ulti-mately result. By the law of numbersthe two resultant entities would assumetheir rightful positions in the galaxy andcontinue to grow until such growthbrought about the necessity for furtherdivision.

The working out of these laws in theMicrocosm is a rapid process and little

time is required for cell multiplication toproduce mass enormously out of pro-portion to the original. W itne ss theelephant's mass compared to the minutecell from which he sprang. In theMacrocosm, however, the time requiredfor the fission of a galactic cell, or evenso correspondingly minute an entity asa solar system, would run into untoldages, as time is measured by man. Pe r-haps the time required for the accomp-lishment of a division of matter on sogrand an order would be proportionalto time and mass necessary to division

in the Microcosmic scales. Th en trulythe old adage, “As above so below,” be-comes axiomatic. Th ere can be no con-flicting laws within the  pro ce ss of crea-tion. W h a t applies to the amoebiccell applies equally to the great cells ofthe macrocosm.

ITS PLACE IN SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL UNFOLDMENT

O MANY persons,music is a form ofentertainment. Tosome it is a meansof culture, selfexpress ion, andr e f i n e m e n t . T oothers it is a relieffrom trouble, care,and distress. Toa fe w it is anagency throughwhich the vibra-tions of thought

may be lifted to a higher state of con-sciousness, bringing to the individualhealing in many problems and the reali-zation of a finer existence.

Considering any or all of these class-

ifications, it may be said that music isa ministry, giving to all the quality theydesire to obtain through it. However,it is the last, and probably the leastconsidered classification, with w h i c hthis article is designed to impress thereader.

Bearing in mind that music is a chan-nel through which we may reach ahigher state of consciousness, let usmentally view the millions of peoplewho attend religious services. T o largenumbers of these, the music heard in

Temples, Cathedrals, Churches a n dMissions, is more expressive of theDivine than any other part of the cere-mony. Fo r this purpose, the greatestcomposers known to the world havegiven of their highest ability that mil-lions may, through the exalted vibra-tions of tone, lift their consciousness tothe realization of reverent Worship, Joyand Peace. M any of these melodies areso impressive that the individual car-ries the consciousness of them through-out daily activities. Surely it may besaid, then, that those who produce suchmusic have performed a sacred ministry,using music as a constructive agency toradiate Cosmic Vibrations of a higherconsciousness.

Let us consider the millions through-

out the world who attend concerts ofthe highest type of classical composi-tions, performed by symphony orches-tras, string quartets, trios, vocal en-sembles and soloists. Here again wefind highly trained artists, at the heightof ability, giving forth vibrations oftone that express the depths of emotion,including the widest range of thoughtfrom the worship of De ity to t h esimplest emotion of the human experi-ence. V as t audiences are swayed bythese vibrations. Human thought is up-

lifted until the individual consciousnessis removed from daily problems and car-ried to a height of enjoyment thatcolors the life and activities of the per-son for a period of time following. Thisagain is constructive service on the part

of the musician, for the individual whoreceives the impression of these vibra-tions, although often unaware of it, hasreceived an impetus that carries him toa higher sense of existence, coloring tosome extent his various activities.

Nowhere is music a greater ministrythan when taught in the public schools.Here thousands of young children areawakening to a sense of the vibrationsof tone. Th e constant practice on in-struments and in voice, constitutes atraining in general poise and musicalappreciation that has a decidedly ele-

vating effect on the child's generalhealth, personal appearance, and mentalpoint of view. Some colleges of thepresent day have included in their curriculums the training of verse choirswhich may be classified as a form of

“Spoken Music,“ the v o i c e s beingchosen for the harmonious rise and fallof tone in the interpretation of the fin-est gems of literature. Visu alize , if youwill, the highly elevating and construc-tive character of this training on the

student, who is learning to express intones of voice the very highest ideals inpoetry and verse, and the upliftingvibrations given the audiences of theirmany concerts.

In conclusion, let us look into thestudio of the private teacher. Howgreat indeed is the opportunity for con-structive service for the teacher whoworks with one individual at a time.Careful analysis and devoted attentionto the student will reveal where themental viewpoint may be changed so asto remove sickness, correct wrong per-sonal habits, improve personal appear-ance, create fine poise, and elevate the

entire character of the individual. Truly

may we say that the Cosmic Vibrations

of Music are a Ministry.

It is not t h a t life,as other socalled universal energies,produces its own distinctive form, forwe find life in forms which are com-posed of the same chemical propertiesas those which are inanimate and havenever, so far as we can determine, beenanimate. Th is causes us to logicallyconclude that life, as we perceive it, isa binary force— the combination of twoof the qualities of absolute action oruniversal being.

In some mysterious manner so farunfathomable, two qualities of absolute

being, two phases of its progressiveaction, instead of customarily changingone into the other in the ascending ordescending scale, have combined andproduced an energy or quality of actionwhich though not of the order of thescale, is yet in it.

W e have said it is an action, becauseit canno t fail to be. T h e two qualitiesof the absolute action or being whichcompose this creation or life energyhave been checked. Th eir natural tend-ency for transition into the next higher

or lower quality of being in the scale,depending upon whether the scale isascending or descending, has ceased.They have assumed a state of quies-cence, a relative nonexistence, in com-parison to their progeny life force whichby contrast is active and being. Th epoint of combination of the two quali-ties of being which compose life is theminimum point of the force of life. Itis at that point that life begins itsexistence or has its being. From thereon, life has a scale of development of

its own. As it becomes more complexin form in the process of evolution, likeabsolute being, it acquires, because ofthis, no more reality but a differentquality. Its simplest form is its minimumof existence; its zenith is its greate stcomplexity.

Like the whole of being, life is inconstant oscillation. It ascends to itsmost complex form and then in repro-duction returns to its minimum — thecell. In the end of genera we find thezenith of a process of life. As the qual-ities of absolute action or being whichcompose life have not only once cometogether, but are continually combining,causing the beginning of life in in-numerable processes of its own, we findcomplex genera existing at the sametime as the less complex. The cell of

the most complex or highly developedgenera, as it moves forward in the pro-cess of evolution, goes through thestages of the lesser complex genera justas being, as we have shown, moves for-ward through its lesser qualities eachtime in attaining its next greatest qual-ity. Th e embryo of the human duringthe period of gestation assumes thestage of other less complex living formsbefore reaching its final stage.

The oscillation between the minimum,the point of possible change from theexisting to the nonexisting, is main-tained in life as in the whole of being.Like in being also, the action of life isnot merely rhythmic, an alternation be-tween its first greatest quality and itssimplest. If it were, life would neverhave advanced beyond its first simpleorganism. It has gradually changed itsquality or, as we biologically say, itsgenera. T h e advancement in some in-stances is so slow that untold thousandsof years are required before there is anyappreciable difference in the final formof a genus.

W e have reduced order to absoluteaction, or being, in our search to findintelligence in order. W e have not,however, given intelligence any separateconsideration. Therefore, we shall directour attention for the moment to themost obvious nature of intelligence.

It is best that before doing so wesummarize a previous conclusion, asthis conclusion has an important bear-ing upon our understanding of intelli-

gence and its relation to our purpose.The conclusion was that the action ofabsolute being is one of the two causesof all results. Being and action aresynonymous, but action is maintainedonly because of the opposite state— nonbeing— making as we have seen oscilla-tion possible. Th erefore, being is all,yet it continues to be only because of itsopposite state. In this sense, nonbeingbecomes a negative cause and being theactive cause of all existence.

Now as to intelligence. W h at is thecommonest attribute of intelligence, thatwhich we recognize as a display of in-telligence? Is it not volition, the exe r-cise of will? Certainly we do not con-sider a being intelligent that acts auto-matically, that constantly pursues onecourse of action when there are others,

or when the action is reasonably notpreferable or best.

An intelligence may be an activecause and therefore possible of results.But intelligence is such, because it eitherdetermines the result it desires andchooses the second and passive cause,to unite with it to that end, or choosesthe passive cause with the hope ofbringing forth an unknown result.

It is true, of course, that an intelli-gence that brings together, for example,an atom of sulphur and three of oxygen,producing a molecule of sulphuric acid,is employing physical causes, but thephysical causes are as but one in unitingwith the motivating intelligence of thechemist, which constitu tes a cause. Anaction must display intent, or it is notintelligent action. W he n there is onlyone course of action open, and one thatcannot be avoided, that which partici-pates in that action cannot be consid-ered as intelligent. Action is the resultof intelligence when there is an alter-nate course of action, and which theacting being is aware of.

Let us apply this conclusion to ab-solute being. If the action of absolutebeing, its order, is intelligent as it isgenerally said to be, there must be analternate state or course that it couldfollow if the present one of being isreally intentionally pursued. Th e oppo-site state of orderly being, or the actionof being we consider orderly, is said tobe disorder— chaos. Th erefore, if be-ing is intelligent, it must pursue its

order in preference to pursuit of chaos.But is and was chaos ever possible? Ifit is not and was not, then being had noother alternative than T O B E , andwhat we determine as order is not theresult of intelligence.

A true chaos could only be possibleif there were things or conditions havingexistence without causes, and thereforeentirely unrelated. Chaos would needbe as absolute as is order. A thingexists, we have seen, by virtue of itscauses. If it is, it is because of itscauses. Remove them and you will re-move the thing or state . An absolutechaos would need to be a state wherethings maintain existence w i t h o u tcauses. If a thing exists because of itscauses, you immediately have order and

not chaos. Before chaos could be real-ized there would need be some thing orthings which were thought to be in achaotic state.

W e find, therefore, that even thetheory of chaos requires being for itsconsideration . Being , as we have seen,can only be being. W h at else could itbe? It is, therefore, dependent upon itsself causes, its action and its oppositestate, nonbeing. It continues becauseof the necessary order of its action. Ifthis order were to cease, the oscillation

cease, that would be chaos, but suchchaos is not possible because with acessation of the rhythmic oscillation be-ing would cease, and with the absenceof being there would be no chaos, forwhat would be chaotic?

Furthermore, the various qualities ofbeing, that which accounts for the formsand forces we perceive, are the result,we have seen, of the rhythmic oscilla-tion of being. Tha t which is called‘‘chaotic’’ and includes various forms ofbeing, would in fact not be chaotic be-

cause the variation of form, the multi-plicity of form, would therefore be anindication of the very order which wehave considered, and that accounts forthe qualities of being.

Absolute being and its action have noother course to pursue other than theone by which we recognize it. Its order,then, is not, we repeat, the result of in-telligence. Man presumes nature's orderis intelligent by comparing its orderwith the artificial order he brings intoexistence in his own world. Man creates

his orders by a process of assemblingthings already in existence w h i c h ,though orderly according to naturallaw, are in relation to his concept orplan disordered until merged by him.Thus the cement, lumber, brick and steel

to be utilized in the construction of abuilding, as they lie upon the site wherethe building is to be erected, stand incomparison to the plan of the architectas disordered. Man realizes that theresult he views as orderly was the resultof his intelligent selection of things orconditions which actualized the orderhe conceived. He further realizes thatthe other things or conditions which heintentionally avoided using would have,if used, produced a thing or conditionwhich would, in contrast to his con-

ceived order, have been chaotic.This is not so with absolute being.

W h at it is is not the result of discardinga part of itself, and the selection of itsown nature. All that is is all there is,All of being is dependent upon the twoprime causes— being itself and its nega-tive opposite, nonbeing. Being has noother alternative than the order whichit displays. Its order as shown is notthe result of intelligence. If man hadbut certain materials to work with, andthe forms he desired to create though

infinite in number had to be created insequence, and no other course could bepursued, his assembly would then hard-ly be called intentional and intelligent,and yet that is the order of nature.

 Just as man presumes that the uni-versal order is intelligent, so, too, hepresumes in his world a state of chaos.His chaos is but relative to the orderwhich he can perceive. In nature hequite easily perceives order, and he hascome to realize that when he perceiveswhat appears to be chaotic, it is the re-

sult of his inability to comprehend theentire order of a natural process. Af terall, what do we define as chaotic? Is itnot that which seems an ubiquitousstate; that is, without beginning or end?

Upon first thought the reader is aptto challenge this statement and recitenumerous examples in nature whereman is not aware of a beginning or end,yet derives from them a realization oforder. If the reader will give a littlefurther thought, it will be realized thatthere is a marked difference between an

absolute beginning and an arbitraryone. It is admitted, for instance, thatwe may look over a section of land com-prising thousands of acres, profuse ingrowth of a certain specie of wild flow-er, and perceive the orderly arrange-ment of the petals of those we inspect,

note the uniformity of color and scent,and not become aware of an absolutebeginning or end to this order. How-ever, at the time we first become con-scious of the order that constitutes itsarbitrary beginning to us; and whenwe perceive a change or something of adifferent nature, or further, when weperceive the horizon, we perceive theorder’s relative end.

It is, we repeat, therefore, only whenwe are unable to mentally establish,even though unconsciously, an arbitrary

beginning or end, that we conceive astate of chaos. T o use a homely ex-ample, if we suddenly enter a room inwhich the furniture does not in its ar-rangement follow some conventionalorder, if the furniture of a living room,bedroom, kitchen and o f f i c e werecrowded into one room without retain-ing their respective arrangements, wewould say a chaotic condition existed.No conception of order would arisefrom our perception of the arrange-ment in comparison with our experience.The individual pieces being of different

form, no order would be suggested byuniformity. Not knowing which piecewas placed first or last in the room, noabsolute beginning or end to the ar-

rangement would be known to us. W ewould not recognize in the arrange-ment any element of order, not even arelative beginning or end.

If, a week later, in another city, wevisited a home in which a room was

identically arranged, and still anotherthe following week, the arrangement toour consciousness would take on thesemblance of order, and why? The uni-formity of arrangement would suggestorder. The original experience wouldconstitute the beginning of a process ofarrangement. The end would be thelast experience of the arrangement had.It might be said by the reader: “Th enthe state of chaos is, in reality, a lackof appreciation of succession, or whenone’s experiences are not sufficient toestablish a concept of succession.” Such

an explanation is true, but it is also be-cause we cannot arrive at an arbitrarybeginning or end of the characteristicswhich constitute the idea of successionand order.

In conclusion, therefore, if universalorder is the assurance given for thevalidity of the doctrine of universal in-telligence, can we now say, from all ofthe above, that we have found in uni-

versal order, intelligence? Or shall we

say that universal order gives no indica-

tion of universal intelligence, and we

are compelled to seek, if we wish to re-tain our belief in the doctrine, some

other assurance or proof?
