Einstein is noted as saying, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the

globe then man would have only four years of life left.”

Well, apparently, there is absolutely no evidence that Einstein ever said that, but it does sound like the sort of thing he might have said.But even if the quote is misattribut-ed, is it true? Perhaps we can ask our guests this week at Syracuse Rotary.Tammy Danielewicz, along with her husband Jeff, own Angry Bee Acres - a mid-size apiary with hives in the Central New York region – primar-ily Cicero, Hannibal, and just out-side of Cazenovia. They have been keeping bees for almost 10 years and have grown from a dozen hives to just under 200. They supply gro-cery stores, restaurants, farm stands, winemakers, homebrewers, and in-dividuals with raw and local clover, wildflower, and buckwheat honey. They are active members of the Syr-

acuse Area Beekeepers Club and the Em-pire State Honey Producers Association.Without denying the importance of the honeybee, we have to consider the related question of “Did Einstein really say this?” First off, accrding to snopes.com, search-es of Einstein’s writings and speeches and public statements, as well as of (scholar-ly) compilations of Einstein quotations reveal nary a reference to the “four years” phrase or any other statement mention-ing bees (save for a brief comparison be-tween humans and colony insects such as ants and bees). The compiler of “The New Quotable Einstein” also found no Einsteinian source for this quote and lists it as “Probably Not by Einstein.” Secondly, even though Einstein died in 1955, assiduous searching of a variety of databases of historical printed material (e.g., books, newspapers, magazines) has so far failed to turn up any mention of this quote (attributed to Einstein or any-one else) antedating 1994, when it sud-denly started popping up in newspaper articles reporting on a protest in Brussels staged by beekeepers. z

plicants for Syracuse Rotary’s 2015-16 grants cycle and urged club members to reach out to encourage grant sub-missions from among their acquain-tances, noting that the grant details can be found at the Syracuse Rotary web page under the P&C tab; and Doug Smith promoted a Syracuse Rotary get together at an upcoming Syracuse Chiefs game at 1 PM on Wednesday, May 20, asking that those interested let him know asap so he can follow up on appropriate arrangements.Prez Jim reminded us that it’s the 70th anniversary of VE Day, which changed the course of the world—for the better.

Our visitors included our good friend, Dick Ford (who is presenting today’s program) and Paulette Stamey, mother of young Thomas Stamey, a piano vir-tuoso who we’ll talk about later. With $156 in the 50/50 Fund, interest was high as PP Vern drew (unsuccessfully it developed) for the Red Queen, leav-ing the five bucks for Tom (Irishman) O’Shea to take home. Lots of Happy Dollars today including one from PP Gary who urged clothing donations for their latest shipment to Uganda, from Marylin who was happy that her son was playing baseball, from Doug promoting the annual DeWitt Rotary Pancake Day and from Mary Lou who was happy that her grand daughter re-cently sang her Happy Birthday…in Japanese no less. Pat (Principal Man) Spadafora was honored by Prez Jim for sponsoring a new member and appro-priately received his recognition pin, with the admonition by the Prez that all of us should “go there and do like-wise”….The Prez then introduced Maestro Dick Ford who has been the primary mover

of Signature Music since its founding in 1993. That splendid organization—a repeat Syracuse Rotary grant recipi-ent-- is a non-profit educational entity dedicated to providing music educa-tion, performance opportunities and college guidance for teen musicians of all backgrounds, but especially those who otherwise couldn’t afford a musi-cal experience. Dick introduced us to two outstanding students of his, one, 12 year old prodigy pianist, Thomas Stamey, who performed for us an ex-ceptionally difficult piece in 5 flats, and the other, 24 year old singer, Danielle Evans, who favored us with a medley of familiar show tunes. Thomas’ rendition was gorgeous and performed with great expression. Danielle (who also plays flute, bassoon and electric bass) has a lovely mellow voice and her interpreta-tions were spot on, assisted on the key-board by the inimitable Dick Ford (no-body plays pop better than Dick). What a great musical program (including the inspired lighting effects)! Thanks Dick, Thomas and Danielle for an outstand-ing program. 10’s all around. z
