Partners will bring extensive experience of 30+ years to Drumlins Country ClubFROM: PASCAL’S, page1

“The lunch menu will be similar to the Bake House, with an Italian twist,” Neal Pascale said. The bistro will also have a full bar.Neal Pascale’s son Nick will serve as general manager of the restaurant. Diruzzo will manage the banquet op-erations.The partners have extensive experience in both the restaurant business and in banquets and catering. Pas-cale Wine Bar & Restaurant was an urban pioneer when it opened in the Hawley-Green neighborhood in the 1980s, before a long stint in Armory Square. It moved to 104 Limestone Plaza in Fayetteville in 2010.

Later that year, the partners’ Bake House moved from its spot in the Hotel Syracuse to a location around the corner from the restaurant on Brooklea Drive. The Pascales ran some catering and banquet operations at the hotel before that move. Justin’s, at 6400 Yorktown Circle (near Carrier Circle), does about 50 percent of its business in banquets and catering, Neal Pascale said.“We feel like we do well in that end of the business, and that’s what will happen at Drumlins,” he said.Members of the family are also partners in several local liquor and wine stores carrying the family name. z

Scene and Herd - RebootA Re-Cap of the January 3, 2014 Rotary Club of Syracuse Meeting

A good crowd turned out this cold and snowy Friday, no doubt urged on by a desire to: learn more about Symphoria!, CNY’s vibrant new symphony orchestra which just cel-ebrated its first anniversary, and a chance to win the big bucks in the 50-50 drawing since the cards were down to 4. No soap on the drawing so next week only 3 cards which, who knows, just might draw record breaking attendance.Lots of happy dollars today, but Jim Morrow’s took the cake--he gave a dollar because he was just happy. Rev. Bob Sherburne gave a thoughtful invocation following which songster Brad led us in a rousing rendition of a favorite patriotic song, sung ever so robustly in recognition of the fact that a real live music professional was in the house. That would be Catherine Underhill, the new managing director of Symphoria!. Past Prez Denny gave a plug for the current P&C campaign which is entering its fi-nal phase in pretty good shape. Only a couple of thou-sand dollars to go to meet our $10,000 goal by January 31. With the encouragement of the $1200 challenge, hopefully all 49 Syracuse Rotarians will step up to the challenge and make their contribution--in whatever amount works for them--within the next few weeks.Hogging the podium, Denny also introduced our speaker, the delightful Catherine Underhill, who shared

her thoughts with us on how inno-vation, passion and commitment to our community combined to create a new orchestra out of the ashes of the old SSO based on a unique business model designed to ensure its sustainability for the foreseeable future.Among the tidbits Catherine shared with us: Symphoria is organized on a cooperative basis, pretty unique in the orchestra world, where the musicians (now numbering in the 50’s) essentially “own” the orchestra; Symphoria!’s current annual budget is in the area of $1.2 million with plans to grow that to $2-2.5 million (compare that to SSO’s last annual

budget of close to $7 million); currently Symphoria! employs only 3 people full time (including Catherine) with another 3 part time employees--they intend to remain lean and mean, says, Catherine (well, not so mean....); unlike most other orchestras, Symphoria!’s revenues are derived 50% from tickets/performance fees and 50% from contributions, another factor which promotes sustainability;Catherine is also proud of their varied musical pro-grams designed to appeal to a wider audience, includ-ing kids who, uniquely (and smartly), are admitted free to all concerts.Go Catherine and Symphoria! Sounds like music in the key of CNY is in very good hands, indeed. z.
