THE ROTATOR
Frank Culley, Editor
Membership Chair
2009 - 2010
September 15, 09 recap:
Today was National Felt Hat Day and Na-tional Crème de Menthe Day. Who thinks upthese silly commemorative days?
Sole Visiting Rotarian was Doug Hoffman,PRLS instructor from SLO, and our programspeaker, introduced by our very own MasterPRLS graduate Frank Culley.Guests: Victor introduced his guest DougKimberly, SM – Bonita School District Super-intendent
Sunshine report – please keep Frank in-formed, he only knows about Tara. Victorreported the good news that Jack Adam isgetting around town and will come to a lunchmeeting “one of these days.” We hope it willbe soon.
Birthdays: Terri Lee was treated to a birthdaylunch by her husband last week and couldn’tmake our meeting, she let the table pay forher.
Anniversaries: Rick Haydon and his wifecelebrated 19 years today! Congratulationsto them both.
Exemption badge: Rick had planned to talkabout football, but instead reminded us toeducate ourselves before casting our votes.Generated lots of good questions and com-ments.
I’m keeping the Terrible Poem Contest openjust a little longer. Please send me your en-tries.
Announcements: Last time I’ll say this: any-one wanting to purchase tickets for the Sept26 BBQ benefiting former Breakfast RotarianJeff Gibbs’ 8 year old son Hank who is un-dergoing several surgeries, contact Susan.
Cost is $8 single, $30 family that feeds 4.Heather and John reported on the SpellingBee. Bob reminded us about the Funraiser.Hans reported the St. Joe’s Interact Club thatwe sponsor is starting the new year, andwelcomed anyone who would like to help.
Does anyone want to go to the District Con-ference in Oct? It’s not too late to register, and it will be lots of fun.
Fines: Carlie paid for the privilege to againbe ambassador for our club to the Lake Ta-hoe area; Karen Fothergill was fined forsome bogus reason (sorry Karen).
Our program was a very professional pres-entation from Doug Hoffman, emphasizingthe value of PRLS and encouraging mem-bers to consider attending. I think he mayhave given this speech once or twice be-fore…
Heather knew windmills originated in Persiaand got Andes Crème de Menthe candies. After all, she needs her energy, she’s eatingfor two.
50/50 Drawing: Ruth Moran had the ticket butnot the marble, but got the carton ofHeather’s hens’ fresh eggs. That pot is reallygetting up there – over $1200! Keep buyingthose tickets.••••••••••••••••Still looking for someone to take notes andsubmit them to Frank. Volunteers can com-mit to only a couple of months. Call me!Susan

THE ROTARY CLUB OF SANTA MARIA
President’s Message
THE ROTATOR
1. Professionals we consult with, e.g. doctors/dentists, accountants, architects, optometrists, veterinarians, attorneys, insurance brokers, financial consultants, real estate brokers/agents, engineers, clergy, etc.
2. Small business owners we use on a regular basis
3. Trades people, e.g. contractors, auto repair, welders, machinists, electricians, plumbers, welders, etc.
4. Home based businesses – contact your city hall, chamber of commerce
5. Business associates or vendors we utilize
6. Business associations and non-profits
Why did you join Rotary? Do you have a personal answer to the question “What is Rotary?” and “Why are you a Rotar-ian?” Do you have an elevator speech?
Does your community know the contribution that Rotary makes locally? Internationally?
Have you invited a guest speaker(s) to become a Rotarian?
Have you asked someone you know to join you at a Rotary meeting, social event, or community service project?
Do you have a process that helps prospects become Rotarians in a timely manner?
Expand the tent…women, ethnicity, age
Personally invite a guest or have members of the membership committee contact the prospect
Sell the cause of Rotary, not the club….the club will sell itself
Don’t be overly strict about attendance….50% is the rule
Remove barriers to membership
Adapt to the new world or get left behind
Credit for the above to District 5240 Membership
